FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER 21st / 22nd April 2018 - Year B HANGING IN THERE It has been said that perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing all the hard work you already did. After watching the incredible drive of the recent Commonwealth Games athletes, one wonders what keeps them so motivated and focussed, particularly when so many were not be rewarded with medals or public adulation. Could it be that they have discovered the energy and fulfilment of perseverance? The truth is that perseverance, that necessary trait of a healthy spiritual life, is never easy, which is why so many people find it difficult to persevere with the practice of their faith when it appears at times to be just hard work. While it seems to be commonly found in athletes and saints, perseverance is not always virtuous, particularly when it presents as stubbornness or pigheadedness. Synonyms for perseverance include endurance, steadfastness, constancy and stability. But it would be wrong to equate perseverance with merely staying in one place or sticking to one thing. We all know of people who have stayed in unfulfilling jobs or relationships, even when they were offered something better, simply because they lacked the courage to change. This is not the life-giving perseverance that can draw us into a deeper appreciation of God’s call to transform ourselves and the world in which we live. Two crucial factors impacting on an approach to perseverance are self-discipline and a vision of the future. The heart of discipline is remembering what you want and staying focused on the journey towards getting what you want. In other words, a vision and a goal. The clearer our vision of what we want in the future, the better our chances are of mustering up the energy and sustaining the self-discipline to achieve that vision. The sharper the vision the more likely the perseverance. Jesus himself gives us frequent examples of his steadfastness. It is good to ask ourselves what enabled him to endure his particular trials and temptations. The answer is simple. Jesus persevered the same way we do: by remembering God loved him and he wanted all people to know that they too were loved as intensely. His vision was totally clear and his path was sure. Even his energy to keep going came from the fact that he knew there was no other way to achieve his goal. He kept to what he had been taught and knew to be true. Fr. FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

21st / 22nd April 2018 - Year B

HANGING IN THERE

It has been said that perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing all the hard work you already did. After watching the incredible drive of the recent Commonwealth Games athletes, one wonders what keeps them so motivated and focussed, particularly when so many were not be rewarded with medals or public adulation. Could it be that they have discovered the energy and fulfilment of perseverance? The truth is that perseverance, that necessary trait of a healthy spiritual life, is never easy, which is why so many people find it

difficult to persevere with the practice of their faith when it appears at times to be just hard work.

This is not the life-giving perseverance that can draw us into a deeper appreciation of God’s call to transform ourselves

and the world in which we live.

The sharper the vision the more likely the

perseverance.

Even his energy to keep going came from the fact that he knew there was no other way to

achieve his goal. He kept to what he had been taught and knew to be true.

CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD Two weeks ago Jennifer and I attended two days formation at Sr Mary de Ricci Atrium in Brisbane, which completed Part 1 of Level 1 Training for the Good Shepherd Catechesis. (3 to 6 years old children) However, there is still more to come. We need to complete Part 2 of level 1. It’s a long journey, but it’s indeed a blessing. Being able to learn how to help our children to know more about God and fall in love with Him following Maria’s Montessori principles of Education is a very enriching and prayerful experience. We will resume on Monday April 23rd, Thursday April 26th and Friday April 27th for the weekly sessions, which run from 9:30am to 11:00am. There are still vacancies available To enrol your child, or for further information regarding adult formation, please email [email protected] or the Parish Office Ph 55725433 We need volunteers to help us with the catechesis – If you are interested please contact the Parish office.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO STOP THE DECRIMINALISATION OF ABORTION IN QUEENSLAND! The most important thing you can do, is to ensure your state MP hears from the community - communicate directly with her. Visit your MP, in person or write a personal letter. Be polite and respectful and inform your MP that you do not want him or her voting for the legalisation of abortion until birth for any reason. Sign the official Queensland parliament e-petition – for easy access, go to www.cherishlife.org.au/petition. Research shows the clear majority of Australians are deeply uncomfortable with abortion, especially for any reason at any stage. Get your friends and family to join the effort – let them know.

THE GOLD COAST CATHOLIC LIBRARY:

Following on from our display last week about Pope Paul V1’s remark that responding to witnesses rather than teachers in today’s society, we ask - “what is the role of a teacher then?” Our HOT READ is Words from the Wounds, which is a collection of the addresses, letters and homilies of Archbishop Mark Coleridge. This book is big and looks a bit intimidating! But the editors, including Anthony Ekpo (who served here), have made a wise choice. Most pieces are only a few pages long and the choice of topics most varied. It is a book to dip into, to read what attracts you, which is surely what God wants you to reflect upon. Archbishop Mark in indeed a fine teacher.

BOOK CLUB members are reminded of our meeting on Tuesday 24th April at 12noon to discuss “All the Light We Cannot See”.
