Fourth Sunday of Advent Thanksgiving weekend, with its compressed timeline, is the busiest

time for travel. But Christmas is not that far behind. The days immediately before Christmas involve people returning home to be

with family for the holiday. The days after Christmas are packed with families traveling for a quick vacation while the children are out of school for a week. The 1844 poem "Over the River and through the Woods" by Lydia Maria Child was originally about journeying to

grandfather's house for Thanksgiving Day. Later recorded versions turned it into a Christmas song describing the sleigh ride to

grandmother's house. Either way, for a long time these winter holidays have involved traveling.

This weekend's Gospel is another traveling story. Pregnant with Jesus, Mary leaves the confines of Nazareth in Galilee and heads south,

up into the hill country of Judea. Is she fleeing because she has no husband yet? Is she going to seek the counsel of an older kinswoman?

Or is she just heading off on a friendly little visit? We don't really know. Luke doesn't tell us, and so her journey is open to speculation.

But Mary's arrival is the first occasion of an expression of joy about the birth of the Savior. Elizabeth proclaims that the infant in her own

womb leaped for joy because of the nearness of salvation. We know that experience. Think of what happens when family or friends finally arrive after a long journey to spend some time over the holidays. They are welcomed and greeted and made to feel at home. This is our natural reaction to seeing folks who have not been around

for a while. We are glad that they are here. Now, take that very natural human reaction and imagine what it will be like to welcome Christ.

Through baptism, we are his brothers and sisters. We are family. And when he returns we will welcome him with great joy!

JUST AROUND THE CORNER Our wait for Christmas is very short now. The Fourth Week of Advent is a mere day-and-a-half in length. There are no more confessions before the celebration of Christmas. Masses for Christmas are as follows: Monday, December 24: 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 25: Midnight, 6:30, 8:00, 10:00 a.m., and 12:00 Noon (Please note: Christmas Carols are sung beginning around 11:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve.)

JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON Remember, in these next couple of days, that we are celebrating the birthday of Jesus Christ as well as preparing for the day He returns. This thought should take precedence over anything else. Christmas is not about the cookies, the visits, the presents, and all those external trappings. Christmas is about the birth of Christ and the preparation for His coming again. So, enjoy the visits with family and friends, but, make sure that you celebrate Christmas by coming to Mass, by praying (both individually and as a family), and by doing good for others. This way, you will show the Christ-Child that you truly care about Him.

PARISH OFFICE CLOSINGS Please note, the parish office is closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, December 24th and 25th, as well as New Year’s Eve, December 31st, and New Year’s Day, January 1st.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS St. Thomas More School closed at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 21st for its annual Christmas holiday. School resumes at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, January 7, 2013. I pray that you and your family and friends will have a very Blessed and Merry Christmas as well as a Happy and Healthy New Year!

PLEASE REMEMBER THEM Please pray for the priests and deacons who have served the Diocese of Gary so faithfully and whose anniversaries of death are this week:

December 24: Rev. John Bargielski (2002) December 25: Rev. Michael C. Gadacz (1971) Deacon John P. Beda (1972) December 26: Msgr. Francis J. Jansen, (1967) Rev. John P. Zubak (1976) December 27: Msgr. Francis X. Guerre (1956) December 28: Rev. Patrick J. Connolly (2002)

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE The Santa Claus at the shopping mall was very surprised when a young lady about twenty years old walked up and sat on his lap. We all know that Santa doesn't usually take requests from adults, but the young woman smiled so nicely at him that he asked her, “What do you want for Christmas?” “Something for my mother, please,” replied the woman sweetly. “Something for your mother? Well, that's very loving and thoughtful of you,” Santa said. “And just what would you like me to bring her?” Without wasting a moment, the young woman answered, “A son-in-law.”

TAIZÉ PRAYER Taizé prayer is a peaceful prayer that helps a person to reflect upon God’s love. It is typically a half hour of reflective song and silence that is designed to help us meditate. Tonight at 6:00 p.m. in the church is your last opportunity to join us for our Advent Taizé prayer. We hope to see you there.

THE ADVENT WREATH Light all four candles on the advent wreath while praying: Almighty God, the day of Christmas draws near. Help us to be ready to celebrate the birthday of your Son as well as to be prepared for His return.

(Sing together) People look east, the time is near of the crowning of the year. Make your house fair as you are able, trim the hearth and set the table. People look east, and sing today. Love, the guest, is on the way.

Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.

My Two Cents Thoughts on Living Stewardship

Fourth Sunday of Advent The Gospel of Luke tells the story of two women, Elizabeth

and Mary, who are united again after time apart. Both pregnant women are bearing a child who will change the world. They sense the future unfolding before them, brought about by the

hand of God. On this last Sunday of Advent, Mary and Elizabeth remind us that Christmas is not simply about the

birth of a child in an obscure corner of the world. It is about recognizing light—the light of Christ, the Anointed One, breaking into the world’s darkness and into our hearts.

trips next year and we hope to provide everyone with many more fun-filled excursions. Your cheerful ways made all

our planning worthwhile. Thank you for helping us to have another successful year!

Remember us next year! We pray you will have a happy and blessed Christmas

with family and friends. May you have the gifts of peace, hope and joy.

Your friends, Lois, Pat & Mary

V{Ü|áàÅtá BLESSINGS TO ALL

from the Students & Staff of St. Thomas More School

On Thursday evening, December 6th, the St. Thomas More gym was bursting with the sounds of Christmas as the STMS Band was joined by the school choirs for an uplifting holiday concert for

parents, grandparents and friends. In total, over 140 St. Thomas More School students, many adorned with Santa hats, participated in this

first-ever combined concert, giving all who attended a wonderful treat to put them in the

Christmas mood. On Friday morning, December 7th, the concert was performed again for the entire student body, much to the delight of our youngest students who enjoy the sing-along and add some of their own dance

moves to the musical accompaniment. Merry Christmas from everyone at

St. Thomas More School.!
