Fourth Day Journal September 2019
FROM THE NCA EMMAUS COMMUNITY LAY DIRECTOR
We recently held a training for our 2020 R’s, Gaylene Guest E192, Chris Scholtz E193, Sam
Gero E-194 and Milton Zapata E-195. With two weekends left in 2019 - Carroll Cobb E-190 and
Jon Guest E-191 -that’s six weekends now planned! What a wonderful opportunity to pass on this
Emmaus experience with those around us in our lives. That’s new opportunities for us to show our
love to 180 or so more people! Start today and pray for the person that you may be blessed to
sponsor.
During the R training, we shared the latest edition
of the R manual with the new R’s. You see, this
manual is a collection of 190 previous weekends
experience of His love and grace. Linda Girten is
the coordinator of this manual and she is doing such
great job of updating all the information that goes
into creating each weekend. And with the upcoming
move to Camp Happyland, she’s working with
Nancy Geeting to get the new information to the manual!
One of the things that I enjoy so much about our Emmaus weekends is seeing the transformation
of those who come to realize that they do indeed see God working within them. That He loves each
one of us – no matter where we are on our faith walk or who we are. That ah-ha moment is a real
joy for me to behold.
After our training we had food (of course, it’s an Emmaus
event after all) but we also had some fun playing in the river
with tubes, floats and boats. I enjoyed showing Milton, Leah
and their three children what fun they could have. At first,
they didn’t want to get their feet wet but as the day
progressed you could see them have their ah-ha moment
and then their confidence just blossomed to the point where
mom and dad had to order them out of the river to rest. I
may never know where this experience will lead these kids,
but it was a seed planted that will grow in their lives to serve
God in some way. What a blessing to be a part of that.

CLD Article Continued:
We have seen that seed planted and bloom in many ways within our community. Some adults have
changed their careers to become pastors as a result of their Emmaus walks. Some of our Chrysalis
youth too have gone on to become pastors. And just look at all those who serve in their churches
and within this Emmaus community! That’s what makes this all worthwhile!
To keep passing this love along!

FROM THE SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR
Pastor Gail, Spiritual Director
“But ask the animals, and they will teach you; the birds of the air, and they will tell you; ask the
plants of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. Who
among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of
every living thing and the breath of every human being.” Job 12:7-10
I have been enjoying sitting outside watching the hummingbirds.
God made these quite unique and fascinating creatures. They
are so fast. I can’t seem to count how many of them there are
because they flitter here and there in seconds. As I was watching
them, one hummingbird came up within a foot of my face and just
stayed there for about ten seconds. I was in awe. What was this
bird saying to me? I walked away and came back only to have one
almost land on my shoulder. This hummingbird just stayed and flut-
tered about my ear for about twenty seconds. I have to admit it was a bit unnerving. I wanted to
swat at it, but God kept my hand from doing so. What do you want?
I closed my eyes and listened to the wings fluttering and God’s whisper. God was telling me
to enjoy the little moments in life and not to concentrate as much on the bigger things that take
my mind and joy away from God. I started to marvel at how small the bird is and how much joy
I receive from these little creatures. God was telling me ‘Trust in Me.’ I thanked God for the
moment.
The hummingbirds, bluebirds, butterflies, dragonflies, deer, and foxes etc. make me marvel at
God’s creation. God wants us to enjoy the life we have been given. To forgive those who have
done harm to us; to love one another as He loves us. Life is short here on earth. Don’t take life
for granted. Live life to the fullest – with love, joy, peace, forgiveness, compassion, justice,
grace and mercy.
God is always there. God loves us so very much. God reminds us of His presence in so many
ways; we need to be more aware of those precious moments.
De Colores,
Gail Dietze

COMMUNITY PALANCA
Welcome, Fall! 'Makes us want to sing when the breeze blows below 90 degrees. As we calm our hearts, return to school, celebrate Labor Day, enjoy football, and get back to a routine, let’s shower it all with prayer and song! David was una-shamed of his worship spirit and God was glori-fied. Undignified. He said, “..and I will become even more un-dignified than this.” Whether in our work world, school, or home, let’s keep that JOY of Jesus and let His Reckless Love pour into our routine in an empowering way. Keep a song in your heart.
Huge thanks to Lindsey Kirkwood & friends for serving God through song and leadership in the Au-gust Ultreya. So much goes into planning the music sets, practicing, leading, praying, caring & wor-shipping. Hallelujah for those like Lindsey who love this community and Christ, who answer the Call “Christ is Counting on you” and their lives respond with “.. and I am counting on Christ”. Pure bless-ing to walk alongside such people, humbling to be Christian friends, shoulder to shoulder on this mission. 'Same with Mike Frankfort who humbly blesses us all with sound support - unreal commit-ment to Christ and His calling. We praise God for all y’all mean to us and His Kingdom!
This month of September will bring Ultreya intros of C-102 butterflies and E-190 team. Music from the August Chrysalis weekend ironically overlaps with several songs played on E-190 teaming, just another Godwink! Come and enjoy as we all sing and praise from our hearts - even in an UNDIGNI-FIED way. The journey with Jesus is rich in love - thank you for supporting the call to worship in song. Together we praise Him.
If you have an interest in NCAE music participation, please contact us at [email protected]. We love to see fresh faces singing and playing, leading in worship and fellowship.

KAIROS KORNER Kairos at Greenville Correctional Center
God is at work in the darkness of the prison. The next weekend is Oct. 24-27. The weekend
leader is Darnell Armstrong and he humbly ask you to pray for the incarcerated and the humble
servants who will minister to them.
There are many opportunities to serve besides being on the inside team. The outside team
provides incredible support that lifts the inside team to be able to best serve the residents. Unlike
Emmaus there is no need for letters as Agape. However cookies are the mainstay of the weekend
so we always need volunteers to bake these special treats.
If you have an interest in learning more about how you can be a part of this special ministry
contact - Charlie Carroll 703-887-7590 or [email protected].
Kairos at Suxssex Correctional Center
GOD calls every believer to serve The Gospel of Jesus Christ in a variety of ways. The Kairos
prison ministry, in particular, is more than just a servant opportunity, it’s a mission project. It’s
serving as Christ’s representative in the lives of the inside Kairos community, helping to build dis-
cipleship, faith, and transforming minds. Becoming a member of the Kairos Ministry Inside, or out-
side team, requires personal sacrifice of TIME, TALENT and TREASURE. Please consider joining
us through your participation inside, through your prayers, service as an outside team support
member, donations, agape letters and posters, COOKIES! And in many other ways.

When I was asked to be a Rectora (“R”) in 2019, it was humbling,
exciting, amazing, terrifying, wonderful, and worrisome – my emotions
were all over the place. You see, I am one of the few people, probably
one hundredth of one percent, who didn’t have the “Emmaus
Experience” on her Emmaus weekend (E-78, more than 21 years ago).
And it took everything within me to overcome my fear to actually
serve on an Emmaus team. But I did, and throughout my teaming
experiences, I have found wonderful Spirit-filled women (and men who have served as Spiritual Directors)
who turned Emmaus into an amazing blessing rather than an intense disappointment.
So, here I am, the R for E-190, something that I never thought would happen. The theme of E-190 is “Our
God is Greater” with our Scripture verse being I John 4:4: “He who is in me is greater than he who is in the
world.” And keeping with the “He is Greater” theme, we are using “Greater” by MercyMe as our theme
song (makes the weekend easy to remember – plus it has a good beat and you can dance to it).
In thinking about what I wanted to do for E-190, it made me think about the people in my life and how I
celebrate who they are and what they mean to me. I have a thing that I do where I pray for people during
the month of their birthdays. I have a calendar that I use to track their special days, and when those days
roll around, I am praying for them, specifically praying for them, during that special time. And one of the
things that everyone has in common is that we are all dealing with “stuff”. Some of us are dealing with
health issues, and some of us are dealing with financial issues. Some of us have family issues – caring for
elderly parents or dealing with children who have problems with which they are struggling. Some of us
have job issues (that would be me), and some of us even have church issues (sometimes Christian people
can be very Un-Christian). So even though I may be praying about something different for each person, the
one thing that we all have in common is that we all have something that wears us down, hurts our hearts,
brings us low, many times causing us to struggle to keep the faith. Those are the things I get asked to pray
for the most. As a result, on E-190, the message that I want to send, that I want the pilgrims (and team) of
E-190 to remember, that I want you to remember is that no matter what Satan throws at you, no matter what
you are facing in this life, “Our God is Greater” than anything. ANYTHING.
One of the lines in “Greater” reads “Bring your doubts and bring your fears. Bring your hurt and bring
your tears. There’ll be no condemnation here. You are holy, righteous and redeemed.” Yes, we will go
through the difficult times in this life. There will be days where we struggle to get through them. But Jesus
is there, walking that road with us – loving us, strengthening us, encouraging us, and telling us that we are
ok and that He loves us just the way God created us to be – despite those voices that tell us otherwise.
Whatever my thing is – whatever your thing is. Our God is Greater. Woo Hoo! De Colores,
Carroll Cobb

From the NCA Chrysalis - C-102 R’s
Hey guys my Name is Becca Washburg and I was one
of the R's for the team of C102. I walked in the summer of
2016 on C93 which was the summer after my freshman
year of high school. When I first got to the weekend as
many of you may know I truly did not want to be there,
but once I saw all the love and support of the amazing team and beloved people that were there
and the amazing community, it really changed my perspective and I didn't want to go home by the
end of the weekend.
I am so happy to still be here three years later. Since then I am truly blessed to be around so
many amazing loving people from this community with people in my church and even my youth
group and youth leader... C102 was such a great weekend not
because of us but because God put the right people on the team
and he chose the right people to walk on that weekend.
T he Weekend wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for the awesome
support of the Emmaus and Chrysalis community. I am so happy to
be a part of His amazing loving community.

Becca Washburg
When I walked on Chrysalis back in the winter of 10th grade, it
was a really life changing experience. It led me to a community full
of love and kindness. I have no idea what I would be doing with so
much of my time if it wasn’t for teaming and attending Ultreyas.
I’m really excited and honored to have been the R of C-102 with
Becca, Doug, and Sheri, it’s been such an amazing experience in
my life. C-102 went wonderfully, and I’m not surprised. God put
exactly who needed to be there, up there, and the team was so amazing. They were all very
happy and willing to work and it was such a blessing to have
them. This was such a fantastic experience to get to have as
a 17 year old, it really let me grow as a leader and get actual
solid practice leading.
Fly with Christ and De Colores,
Much love : )
