The career of George and Mary Clare Schmitt’s Frumious(Grindstone) had previously been marked by brief glimpses ofability separated by lay-off lines. But the 6-year-old has put itall together in recent months, and earned a first career black-type success yesterday, taking Santa Anita’s GII Palos VerdesS. by by 5 3/4 lengths in a powerful front-running effort. Hiscase was certainly helped by the scratch of recently crownedchampion Amazombie (Northern Afleet), who should makehis return to the races in the coming weeks.

>Bowling= Them Over cont... Mr. Bowling earned his diploma second out atDelaware Park Aug. 22, and had no trouble stretchingout when he annexed the Dover S. back at that ovalOct. 8 by a facile 7 1/4-length margin. That efforthelped the homebred garner 7-5 favoritism in Churchill=sGIII Iroquois S. Oct. 30, but Mr. Bowling could do nobetter than a non-threatening third. He had beenworking bullets here since that race, including one incompany with Believe You Can (Proud Citizen) (see p6)going five furlongs in :58 4/5 Jan. 9, and was backeddown to 7-2 despite a morning line quote of 8-1. Hugging the fence in mid-pack behind a half in:47.22, Mr. Bowling moved up and out several pathsentering the far turn to take closer order. He seemed tospin his wheels briefly at the head of the lane afterlooming ominously, but responded to left-handedencouragement from Robby Albarado and kicked it intohigh gear as he sliced in between horses and to thelead. He took several strides to level off, but wastraveling well inside the furlong marker and was able tocontain Z Dager=s resolute rally. Shared Property, whomade his run farther outsidethan the top two, looked likea winner in mid-stretch, butran out of real estate to falla half-length short of therunner-up. AI had a great trip, unbelievable trip,@ saidwinning pilot RobbyAlbarado. AI just wanted togive him a chance turning for home. I worked him inthe morning--I saw a lot of fight in him. So I figured if Ican get him clear turning for home, give him a chanceto run, he would. When that horse ran to him late, hegave him some second effort.@ Mr. Bowling, who will return here in the GII RisenStar S. Feb. 25, is the first graded stakes winner forsophomore sire Istan (Gone West), who currentlystands at Jones=s Airdrie Stud for $3,500. Steve Asmussen, trainer of the runner-up, said of hischarge, AHe=s a little bit >on again, off again,= but that=sjust who he is. I think the winner ran about a headbetter than we did...I think it was huge for his thirdrace, coming out of a maiden race, to run as well as hedid.@

Mr. Vegas, a smart debut winner at Saratoga in2009, had bounced back and forth between New Yorkand the Midwest over the last few seasons, andrejoined Richard Sherer=s barn last August afterspending some time with Christophe Clement. Hefinished close-up seconds three times from four tries inIllinois from August to September, and scored by ahead over this course and distance in a $40K optionalclaimer Nov. 26. The chestnut paired that victory withone against $62K optional sellers (not in for the tageither time) Dec. 31, and was looking to remainunbeaten over the grass here in his graded stakes bow. Mr. Vegas controlled the pace through six furlongs in1:13.84, and dug in to hold off veteran Dubious Miss inthe stretch, bumping with his pursuer around thesixteenth pole. For years, our policy at the TDN has been to publishthe first foals of champions only. However, this policyhas sometimes been an unpopular one among ourclients, and it seems as if we spend much of eachJanuary defending it. Therefore, from now on, everyfirst foal that is reported to us will be carried in ourfoaling news section with a special designation, indicating that it is a first foal, as in the example below. If you have any questions, please feel free to contactus at 732-747-8060.
