I love fresh starts. It’s probably while I love publishing The Fountain. Every month, we get to start over with a blank piece of paper and a fresh start. In fact, this month we started with a completely blank sheet and applied a fresh, updated look to all of our pages. We hope you enjoy rediscovering The Fountain and hope you’ll join us by contributing your stories and ideas in the New Year.

Last year was intense on all kinds of levels and the idea that 2008 is now officially over is exciting news for a lot of people. Sure, nothing magically changed in our real-ity from December 31 to January 1, but somehow just the simple shift from 2008 to 2009 is enough to provide a flicker of hope that the worst is behind us. I think we all feel a sense of uncertainty about 2009….What will it hold? Will the economy start to recover? Will the new administration bring positive change? Will we start to truly embrace our impact on the planet and take action to improve it? Will we make any kind of forward motion in the year ahead?

While the unknown can be scary, it’s actually the best place to be. Think about it. That uncertainty means there is potential. As long as things are up in the air, there is a chance to influence the outcome. We are creatures of habit, though. As much as we might want things to change, we don’t like to change our behavior or patterns. We don’t have time. We’re too tired. We have a myriad of excuses for why we can’t change what we’re doing. Next thing you know, our opportunity for change has passed by and we’re kick-ing ourselves for missing it. We miss out on the ‘new’ because we’re holding onto the ‘old’. What are you most uncertain about in 2009? Is it your finances? Career? Marriage? Health? Whatever that thing is, it is also your biggest opportunity in 2009. It’s the area in your life that has the greatest potential. The trick is to see it as exciting, rather than scary. Suddenly, it becomes an adventure… a start, rather than an end.The New Year is a brand new start. It will be New Year’s Eve again before you know it, but the adventure in between now and then, that’s where the fun of life is….the unknown. Enjoy the fresh start – the blank sheet of paper – the New Year! Make it exactly what you want and enjoy the ride!

San Diego Cyclones Baseball Club

The San Diego Cyclones are a travel baseball club based here in the City of San Marcos. This youth baseball pro-gram participates in league play and travels for tournaments. They are led by Coach Jack Pennock who has been training and coaching kids in San Diego for many years. He has a long history in baseball, including the fact that his uncle, Hall of Famer Hank Pennock, played with the 1927 Yankees. The San Diego Cyclones have a lot of fun together and have been winning championship games throughout Southern California. While the club does well in competition, Coach Jack also emphasizes the importance of school and how players can transfer their discipline in baseball to their books. Try-outs are taking place this month at the Cyclones baseball facility located at Valley Christian School at 1350 Discovery St, San Marcos, just behind San Marcos High School. • 13U & 14U team: Saturday, January 17, 12:30 to 2:30 pm • 12U team: Saturday, January 24 & Sunday, January 25, 2:30 - 4:30 pm• 8U & 11U teams: Saturday, January 24 & Sunday, January 25, 12-2 pm

CLUBS & EvEnTSVisitor’s Center Building Now For Sale

You will soon notice that the building that we have all come to know as the ‘Visitor’s Center’ is being listed for sale by HomeFed Corp. The developer wanted to make sure residents were aware of their intentions in advance of public notice so it would not raise any unwarranted concerns. The building is for sale and the Visitor’s Center itself will be relocated within San Elijo Hills. The developer is not going anywhere. What they are doing is moving into a smaller space while simultaneously opening up additional space for office/

retail potential in the Town Center. With only a few homes left in inventory right now and the limited num-ber of townhomes to sell in the first phase of the Town Center, the smaller on-site staff simply does not need as much space to operate effectively. The sale of this build-

ing will have the added benefit of opening up additional commercial space in our town square which could potentially come online at the same time as the first phase of the Town Center. In original plans, the building that houses the Visitor’s Center was identified as ideal for a bank, but it’s not likely that a bank would purchase this kind of building in today’s market. With this in mind, there is already a different spot slated for a bank in the Town Center. Many residents have asked about this building throughout the years wondering when it would be put on the market. If you or someone you know is interested in the building, now is a great time to check into it. The building is beautiful with many upgraded details. The unique space does make tenant improvements difficult, but it would make a great executive suite / retail combination, similar to how the space is being used now. After the building sells, the Visitor’s Center will move into a smaller space in the Town Center.

Turkey Classic names new Champion

neighbors from through-out San elijo Hills gathered on Thanksgiving weekend for the traditional Turkey Classic Golf Tournament. What started six years ago as four next door neigh-bors playing golf, has turned into a highly anticipated day of fun! This year there were 32 players with a wide range of golfing skills (or lack thereof). The winner of the Turkey Classic is the player with the highest score. This play-er gets to take home the coveted

“Green jacket” (a women’s blazer from Goodwill that has a tur-key patch sewn onto the front). They also get their name forever engraved onto the tournament trophy.

This year’s title of champion goes to Zoiner Tejada of morgan’s Corner. Zoiner won the tour-nament with an amazing and unmatched score of 116. He took home the green jacket and prom-ises to wear the jacket at various community events throughout the year. if you see someone at an event wearing a green blazer that is clearly too small, stop and introduce yourself as you con-gratulate Zoiner for his amazing golf skills.

The ‘loser’ of the Turkey Classic is the player with the lowest score. This year’s loser was Paul latchford of Promontory ridge with a score of 58.

After an afternoon of golf, the players gather their families and friends and headed over to the Smith house for food, drinks and fun. The Turkey Classic has evolved into a neighborhood tra-dition everyone looks forward to each year. if you didn’t get to par-ticipate this year, put it on your calendar now. The event is on the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year. For details, contact

A Warning About loan modification Services

If you are behind on mortgage payments, you may be contacted by people offering to to assist you with a loan modification with your lender. Local realtors, Randy and Grace Hood, wanted to make sure that San Elijo Hills residents are aware that many opportunists are taking advantage of the current conditions to earn a quick buck. The Department of Real Estate warns, “You must be very careful if you are asked to pay for any of these [loan modification] services in advance, whether in cash, check or by charging your credit card. First, California Civil Code Section 2945, which regulates ‘foreclosure consultants’, forbids anyone who falls under the definition of a ‘foreclosure consultant’, as well as a real estate licensee, from collecting any advance fees for these types of services if a Notice of Default has been recorded against your property.” For a Real Estate Licensee in the state of California to take any money in advance for performing a service, they have to obtain a special approval from the Department of Real Estate and as of December, there were only eleven brokers in the entire state licensed in this fashion. A legitimate service will charge you $300-$500 to review your case and then give you the likelihood of success before proceeding - nobody can guarantee results. The rules and guidelines are changing all the time. If your lender has recorded a notice of default, do not pay an advance fee to anyone. There are non-profit agencies that can assist you without charging you a fee and real estate brokers who can represent you for a fee to be paid AFTER they have completed their work.

San Elijo Students Recognized

Several elementary and middle school students in San Marcos were recently recognized for their participation in a recycled holiday ornament contest. Students used egg cartons, spools, straws, cardboard, plastic containers, broken toys, junk mail and newspapers to create beautiful “green” holiday ornaments. More than 10,000 students in San Marcos were invited to par-ticipate. The contest winners were announced at the 17th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony at the San Marcos Civic Center. Two residents from San Elijo Hills were among the winners. Kaimana Bright in 4th grade at San Elijo Elementary took first place in the 3rd – 6th grade category and Juliana Liebentritt, also in 4th grade, took 2nd place in the same category. A special congratulations goes to these girls for helping to promote environ-mental awareness during the holiday season.

Local Realtor Obtains Certified Short-Sale Professional Designation

Mary Maloney, Owner of Hometown Realty here in San Elijo Hills, was recently awarded the Certified Short-Sale Professional (CSP) designation. Receiving this designation will enable her to better serve those in our com-munity that find themselves in difficult positions as we move into 2009. Mary joins a select and growing group of real estate agents who have recog-nized the importance of providing this value-added service to their clients. Unlike normal real estate transactions, a short-sale requires particular care and additional work to be completed smoothly and, if done improperly, may cause the homeowner to go into foreclosure. In today’s increasingly com-petitive real estate market, these trained agents set themselves apart with the knowledge and tools to assess a homeowner’s situation and properly guide them and the buyer of the property through all the necessary approval processes required to short sale a home. For a free preliminary assessment of your home, contact Mary Maloney, your local Certified Short-Sale Professional at (760) 855-1424.

San Elijo Hills Community Tree Lighting

Residents of San Elijo Hills gathered on December 5 in the Town Square to celebrate the lighting of the holiday tree. It was a fantastic turnout and everyone had a great time indulging in festive cook-ies, hot chocolate and hot apple cider as they gath-

ered to visit with neighbors and get into the spirit of the season. Many residents reminisced about the first year the tree was planted. Back then you couldn’t even see the tree in the crowd because it was so small. This year the tree towered over the crowd with over 8000 lights adorning its branches. Donations were also collected for Straight from the Heart, a local non-profit that provides support for foster children.

Mary RussesllPTo President - San elijo elementary

Mary Russell and her family moved to San Elijo Hills five years ago from Rancho Carrillo. Mary and Mel have been married for about 17 years. They have three daughters. Brittany (15) is a freshman at San Marcos High. She

plays school and club volleyball. Kaitlin (12) is a 7th grader at San Elijo Middle. She enjoys dancing at San Elijo Dance Academy. Allison (9) is in 4th grade at San Elijo Elementary

and enjoys playing soccer. Mary and Mel are both Registered Nurses. Mel is in management at Balboa Naval Medical Center. Mary works with trauma doc-tors at Palomar Medical Center. Her

job works out great by giving her the flexibility to work while the girls are in school. But the girls aren’t the only ones in school…Mary is currently working on her Master’s Degree as a Nurse Practitioner.

Mary has served as President of the San Elijo Elementary PTO

for two years now. She knows it’s

important to take an active role at the schools and it’s been great for both her and her girls. Mary loves working with the parent volunteers who make up the PTO board as well as the administration and Principal McDonell. “The greatest reward of being PTO President has been realizing what an amazing community we live in. We are so fortunate to have the ongoing donations of both time and support from individuals, families and businesses in the community. If it weren’t for parent involvement and the generous support of the community, SEES wouldn’t have so many of the programs our kids enjoy – art, music, science and technology.” (Mary)

The hardest part of being the PTO President is trying to please every-one and to keep the money flowing in while not overwhelming everyone with activities and fundraisers. It’s a delicate balance, but each year parents step up and offer what they can and Mary has been amazed to see all that can be accomplished.

Serving on the PTO Board is something Mary encourages all parents to consider because it’s such a rewarding experience. A lot of times people are scared of the time commitment of taking a leadership role. When you look at Mary, your excuses seem to fade. As a mother of three busy girls at three different schools, a working Registered Nurse, and a woman pursuing her Masters, Mary demonstrates what it means to be an active participant in the community. “You’re never on your own. Everyone steps up and does their part.” (Mary)

Maintaining the Quality of Our Community

CHriS orlAnDo: CiTY CounCil Unfortunately, the effects of the national housing crisis are visible on many streets in our community. A “bank-owned” For Sale sign in an overgrown yard has become an all too familiar sight. The City of San Marcos is taking a proactive approach to ensuring that these properties do not become a nuisance in our neighborhoods.

In July 2008, the State Legislature passed and the Governor signed SB 1137, which gives government entities the ability to impose fines of up to $1,000 a day on owners of foreclosed homes for fail-ing to maintain the property. At my request, the City of San Marcos has begun to inform the banks and other owners of foreclosed properties in the City of their responsibility to maintain the home properly and of the City’s intention to impose these fines. So far, the holders of bank-owned properties have been responsive; however, the City continues to monitor the situation closely and to respond quickly when a resident expresses a concern about the maintenance of a bank-owned property in their neighborhood.

The renting of residential homes as rooming houses has been another source of concern for residents. In August, a new rooming house ordinance went into effect that the City Council enacted last year to address how many

individuals may live in a single family home at one time. The ordinance is intended to help curb excessive night-time noise, additional neighborhood traffic and lack of street parking in residential neighborhoods that often accompany a house that is being rented to several individuals. The purpose of this new law is to help preserve the residential character of San Marcos neighborhoods, to maintain the quality of life that residents expect, and to prevent single family homes from being used in a commercial manner.

While foreclosed homes and rooming houses pose particular problems, the City is also examining how to address situations where a house is simply not maintained at an appropriate level. This year the City Council will con-sider a new property appearance ordinance intended to strengthen its code enforcement ability as it addresses maintenance and other property appear-ance problems. These types of problems within neighborhoods can be very complicated, so the new ordinance deserves careful consideration when it comes before the Council this year.

While many of these issues can and should be addressed first by the homeowners’ association, the City of San Marcos is also an important resource. In addition to working with the homeowners association, if a bank-owned property in your neighborhood is not being properly maintained, or you are having difficulty with a possible rooming house or other similar problems in your neighborhood, contact the City’s Code Enforcement Hotline at (760) 744-1050, ext. 3206.

During the current challenging economic environment, maintaining the quality of life in our community by proactively addressing these types of issues needs to remain a top priority.

SEES Students seize the opportunity to blend democracy and journalism

PrinCiPAl : lYnDA mCDonell The SEES News Network is sending a reporter to the Inauguration of Barack Obama this month. The student run video news production network, supported by the SEES PTO and guided by teachers Mr. Faulkner and Mr. Hogan, is working on assignments for the field reporter, Principal Lynda McDonell. She will be attending the Martin Luther King Jr. Day festivities, the Inauguration Day celebration, and the Pennsylvania Inaugural Ball.Fifth grade SEES News Network students are currently making their assignments for Mrs. McDonell. They will ask her to videotape all of the activities and interview other visitors to Washington, D.C. Mr. Versteeg, second grade teacher, will also be attending the festivities.

Upon her return, the SEES News Network will interview Mrs. McDonell and edit the videos to create a special edition of SEES News. The theme of the Inauguration is A New Birth of Freedom, a line from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. The special edition will feature stories and photographs that depict the theme.Several third grade students wrote letters to President-elect Obama with suggestions for his presidency. Topics included the environment, poverty, taxes, and education. These student letters will become part of the special edition as well. All of us at SEES are incredibly proud of these budding journalists and their willingness to utilize their first amendment rights to write to their president. It is a tremendous reminder that they are fortunate to live in a country that respects their views and expects their participation. You can view the special edition of SEES News after January 26th when it is released to the students.

COMMUnITy LIFESTLyE: GARDEnInG

I always think of the New Year as a time to let go of the past and embrace the now. Too many of us are so consumed with the past that

we allow it to distract us from the things that matter the most; the health and happiness of our families and our own personal love of life. Many of us will agree that 2008 was one of the most difficult years that we have ever had to endure. I too faced incredible challenges both as a busi-ness owner/employer and in my own personal life. I watched in disbelief as my investment portfolio and those of my close friends/clients shrank at an unprecedented rate. I quickly realized that I had to make some hard deci-sions to figure out what path to take. I could either dwell on the past and focus on what was, or spend my time focused on what is and what will be. I chose the latter and have never looked back. In this installment I hope to share with you some helpful ways to apply this to your life both in and out of the garden.

For most of us, letting go of the past seems to be extremely difficult. We spend countless hours obsessing over things that have no importance in our daily lives and only serve to interfere with our ability to live in the now. I call these things distractions. We need to learn how to let go of these distractions and get on with the business of living. How do we do that you ask? We begin by embracing reality. For all of us our new “reality” will involve some level of change. Change is a good thing and can help us cope with new challenges in our day-to-day lives. Let’s face it, unless you are among the few that profited from the economic meltdown on Wall Street, then your net worth is a heck of a lot less now than it was just a few short months ago. That is what I am calling reality. Believe it or not, a strong dose of reality is a good thing. It allows us to distinguish the things in our lives that have meaning, from that which is unnecessary or simply burdensome. We need to stop living to impress other people and stop seeking the approval of anyone but ourselves. How on earth does any of this pertain to landscape and gardening you ask? Well, hang on, I’m about to share that with you.

The Blank SlateIf you have purchased a new home with-in the last 12 months or are

about the purchase a new home, then I am writing this section specifically for you. The only assumption that I am making is that you no longer have seemingly endless amounts of money to spend on landscape, nor will you be paying for your landscape from an equity line of credit. That said, let’s get on with the business of reality. What do you do if you are staring at dirt and have 6-12 months to get your landscaping done? Firstly, don’t panic. Secondly, pick up the phone and call Harmony Landscape at (760) 736-4767. We will be glad to meet with you to discuss your landscape needs. I always suggest that my clients get a professional landscape plan done. This involves prioritizing your needs and wants and getting your ideas (along with our creative input) down on paper. The Landscape Plan is critical to achieving success with your project. You will know what is in and what is outside the project scope. You will own the plan and can select to have other licensed landscape contractors bid on your project. You will also have the ability to break your project into phases that make budgetary sense based on your new definition of reality. And guess what,

that’s OK. Who cares if you have to wait 6-12 months to build the outdoor kitchen your have always wanted? Answer: no one.

I like to take a much more practical approach to landscape that reflects the current economic boat we are all in. I respect and appreciate the hard earned dollars that you will be investing in your landscape. Through care-

ful planning and preparation we will be able to work together to achieve just the look your heart desires without breaking your budget or wasting money on something that is just going to have to be ripped-out and re-done in a few years anyway.

The Rip-out/Re-doSo you have just moved into a home

that was landscaped (probably very badly) and want to make some changes, or you are just plain tired of looking at work that you have had done a while ago. Regardless of your situation, you need to take a deep breath and exhale slowly. Then pick up the phone and call Harmony Landscape for a complementary consultation at

(760) 736-4767. We will take an assessment of your current landscape, soil conditions, and irrigation/drainage systems and will be able to make suggestions as to what are the critical items you should be focused on. Every situation is different. You could simply want a specific planter area in the back yard addressed, or you may want a beautiful tree planted in the front yard. Whatever your situation is, we can meet and discuss it. We will suggest that you make a list of your landscape needs and wants, and will work with you to budget accordingly.

Once again, taking on smaller projects over an extended period of time is perfectly normal based on our new shared reality. We are here to help you get the most out of your landscape budget and get on with the business of living.

Until next time, Happy New Year and Happy Gardening!

The Lights are On and Everyone’s HomeJanuary is often a month where people stay in and don’t socialize as much

as they normally would during the spring and summer time. This year, why not buck the trend and entertain at home? You could plan a gourmet event for less than the price of an entrée at an exclusive restaurant, and cre-ate a get-together to suit your current lifestyle, whether you’re single, a stay-at-home mom, part of an empty-nester couple or somewhere in between.

One imaginative event my neighbor recently attended was a daytime cookie-decorating party. Although the festivi-ties were specifically geared towards mothers and daughters, this is great fun for any child three years of age and up. Having a dessert decorating theme would make any play date more special. When pre-planning, however, don’t feel like you need to whip up your cook-ies, cupcakes or brownies from scratch. (Occasionally, I drop off extra pas-tries that I bake to close neighbors; no one complains that they’re from a mix when they’re fresh out of the oven!) Have them pre-baked (or pre-bought) and ready to go, along with a “design bar” of frostings, sprinkles and candy accents. Provide some small spatulas, paper plates and a work area sized for the little ones, and fun is guaranteed to ensue! While in the planning stages, remember to consult with the parents of any invitee; food allergies are on the rise, and peanuts, peanut butter or certain other ingredients are potentially dangerous. Addressing these concerns beforehand means that everyone can relax, have a good time and be their own baking expert.

Gourmet television has exploded in the past few years, and there are numerous shows onscreen with a devoted audience of amateur armchair foodies. Why not bring your favorite “must eat TV” to life and have a soiree to screen – or pay homage to – your beloved program? Play a mini-marathon of shows, and serve dishes from episodes past. Encourage guests to bring their favorite recipe as well. This is especially fun for competition-based programming such as the Iron Chef franchise and Bravo’s Top Chef. Both shows have a cult following that has seen the rise of viewing parties, some with improvised challenges. A few years ago, I attended a hilarious “White

Trash Iron Chef ” competition where the secret ingredient was Spam. Everyone outdid themselves trying to devise a winning recipe, and kitschy vintage cookbooks were handed out as prizes. It’s one of the more memo-rable parties I’ve ever been to, probably because perfection was not an issue so everyone let loose and had genuine fun whipping up offbeat meals. With

all the external pressure going on in the world today, a bit of low-stakes culi-nary creativity is an inspired diversion and an entertaining night in.

Perhaps you’d like to try something new, and learn a complex dish with a few of your friends. There’s plenty of seri-ous gastronomes like Martha Stewart, Mario Battali and Emeril Lagasse who can guide your next real-life recipe party. Pick a dish, have everyone bring ingredients and get together to learn as you watch a recorded episode. Think of this as a Williams Sonoma-type of cooking class at home. It’s a good idea to have some snacks in case the dish isn’t entirely a success, but the aim is

to become skilled at something new, not achieve instant perfection. With your neighbors around you, the chance of prevailing can only increase exponentially – unless there are literally too many cooks in the kitchen. Keeping the number of guests down in this instance is recommended!

Ultimately, there is nothing simpler than throwing a pot-luck meal and having visitors arrive with an assigned item. It’s economical, quick to organize, and any social event always improves with food! Whether it’s to just catch up or have an informal networking session, this is the fastest and easiest way to take time out and see friends without disrupting everyone’s schedule. And as everyone knows, sometimes the best times are the most spontaneous ones.

So start this New Year right by not letting old and new acquain-tances be forgotten. Have an epicurean experience with your friends and neighbors tailored to your particular interests. It’s a fantastic way of staying connected – and contented – while awaiting the return of warmer weather.

Many homes in San Elijo Hills already harness the sun’s energy to heat their pools, but have you ever considered generating your own electricity? Perhaps the idea of solar electricity brings to mind images of hippies liv-ing in harmony in a commune. However, these days solar electricity has become very mainstream, especially in today’s world of rising energy prices and insecure sources of energy. You can see solar panels generating electric-ity at schools, apartment buildings and even local businesses such as Stone Brewery just down the road. In fact, even the utility companies generate solar electricity these days. They also buy solar electricity from homeowners like you. Why not set yourself up to harness solar energy from your own home? The basic idea for a home solar electric system is this:

You put solar panels on your roof; they collect the sun’s energy and produce electricity that is pumped back into the electric company’s power grid. The electric company then buys this excess electricity during the day from you.

At night when the sun is down, you buy electricity from the utility company. You basically pump power out to the electric company’s grid dur-ing day and get it back at night. In a way, it’s kind of like banking electricity with the utility company during the day that you can use at a later time when the sun is not out or when you need more electricity than your solar power system is producing.

In the end, you just pay for the “net” amount of electricity that you use over the course of a year. “Net” just means the amount of electricity you use minus the amount that your solar panels generate.

There are a lot of reasons why solar makes sense. It is clean energy and reduces carbon emissions for a cleaner environment. It provides a path to less reliance on foreign countries for energy; less reliance on fossil fuels like oil, coal, natural gas; and less reliance on nuclear energy. Solar power is just the “right” thing to do. And, it’s an energy source that is perfect for many homeowners in San Elijo Hills.

Next time you draw the blinds to keep the sun from beating through the window, think about all that wasted energy and then imagine putting it to good work. It’s a great time to get serious about solar power.

A Fresh Financial OutlookHere’s a new thought. Instead of spending time on the

state of this last financial year, let’s see how we can look at this next year in a fresh new way. How can we get a better handle on our household finances? What can we do to motivate ourselves in ways we haven’t before? What can we learn about our money that will set a positive tone for the year ahead?

One thing to remember is that there’s plenty of informa-tion out there to help. But in today’s information rich society, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and possibly discouraged. Before you wade in too deep, let’s think about the different aspects of making financial changes and some tips that can help along the way.

Let’s face it. We are creatures of habit. But we are also capable of making changes in our lives and finances. The question is whether the need to change is great enough for us to act. Change is more likely and lasting if you have man-ageable goals, are self-motivated, and have a plan of action.

Establish goals. Assessing your financial needs may seem daunting. So start with some basic goals first and build on them as you go. Each goal should be clearly defined, measurable, and realistic for your current situation. As an example, say you want to add a goal of consistently paying your bills on time starting next month. You’ll need to know enough about your bills (i.e. amounts and due dates) and your income to determine if that goal is realistic. You may discover that having a bill paying schedule is enough to meet your goal.

Focus on the whats and whys of motivation: Take 5 minutes to write down all the reasons why the goal is impor-tant to you and what it will do for your finances. For the goal above, the “why” could be spending less time worrying about your bills or the peace of mind knowing you can pay them on time. The “what” is simplifying your bill paying activities and avoiding paying extra fees and interest. Think about your whats and whys. These will help transform your goal from a

plan into action, and help you cope if you get side-tracked.Know what you have already and build on it. Make a list of the tools

and information you already have to support your financial goal (i.e. monthly statements, receipts, bills, other worksheets). Determine what else is needed to put a plan in place. Talk it through with your spouse or someone else you trust in these matters. A plan of action need not be elaborate; just some-thing that helps you stay on track over time and keeps you accountable to your goal.

Last Quick Tip: Have a notebook or one place to write these financial plans down. This becomes your way of communicating what’s important in your finances. As you make progress, write that down too so you can cel-ebrate and build on your successes.

Aspirations School of Learning

6286 El Camino Real in Carlsbad. (760) 603-9173

For more information, visit www.aspiringchild.com.

If you live in San Elijo Hills and have little ones, you have undoubtedly heard about the new preschool that has opened in Carlsbad, Aspirations School. The beautiful facility opened its doors to its first students just this

last year and the school is already nearly full, a testament to the quality of the facility. Aspirations School is located on El Camino Real across from Pure Fitness near Palomar Airport Road and if you haven’t taken a tour of the facility yet, it is well worth your time. You’ll be amazed by the warmth, creativity and attention to detail that you find throughout the facil-ity which is also reflected in Aspirations’ approach to learning.

Aspirations School is designed around the philosophy that children are inherently competent and capable with a natural desire to learn. The school provides an environment designed to stimulate children’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical development. The facility is filled with natural light and plenty of open space. The emer-gent curriculum and activities are centered on student interests and passions. They use a Reggio Emilia inspired approach to learning which is based on the philosophy that each child creates their own learning experience from

It’s exciting to see a growing trend in the medical profession toward more personal approaches to service. If you take several medications on a daily basis, it’s easy to get lost in how to manage them. What if you could have a personal pharmacist? Well, now you can.

Michael Bosse, a pharmacist who lives here in San Elijo Hills, has started a new business that acts as your personal pharmacist. The concept was years in the making and the business officially opened its doors in October of 2008. A1c Rx is a specialty pharmacy for people with diabetes and other chronic diseases. They have three pharma-cists and three technicians who are specially trained and work directly with prescribers and insurance companies to provide patients with all of their pharmaceutical needs. They even deliver the medi-cations free to your home on a regular basis. A1c Rx has two convenient locations in Carlsbad and Encinitas. The closest to San Elijo Hills is the Carlsbad office on the corner of Melrose and Palomar Airport Road.

Here’s how it works. A patient schedules a no-cost appointment where a clinical pharmacist at A1c Rx meets individually with them for 45 minutes in a private medical suite. They discuss the patient’s pharmacy needs and do a complete medication review, checking for interactions, side effects and opportunities for cost savings. A1c Rx then processes and coordinates medi-cations and refills with both the physician and insurance company. After all is said and done, they home-deliver everything to the patient on a regular basis. There is no extra cost for either the consultation or the home delivery. The patient is only responsible for usual co-pays and requested OTC (over

direct interaction with their environment. Aspirations School is filled with opportunities for students to interact with their environment and to see themselves and their creativity reflected in their surroundings. One room where you see this most is the art room where children create masterpieces from simple yet unique materials. The arts foundation of the school is evi-dent throughout the facility.

Aspirations School offers programs for infants, toddlers, preschool and kindergarten. Whether six months old or kindergarten-aged, there is a place within Aspirations School for your child. ‘Classrooms’ are set up for the different age groups and each has a very warm and home-like feel. The ‘family feel’ of the facility no doubt stems from the fact that Aspirations is a family-owned business. It is owned by the Heims and their three adult children. Katherine Bond who lives here in San Elijo Hills is the daughter of the Executive Director, Theresa Heim. Katherine’s two children attend Aspirations and it’s great for them to get to see ‘grandma’ on a daily basis. Theresa spent her career working in childhood development, most recently serving as the Deputy Director for Children and Youth Programs at Camp Pendleton. Aspirations School is truly a dream come true for her. She is extremely proud of what they have created working together and the team that they have developed. The teachers and staff are genuinely dedicated to developing the lifetime learner in each child and the environment is as wonderful for the staff as it is for the students.

If you are looking for a stimulating and peaceful environment for your child, Aspirations is definitely worth your consideration. A few openings are still available, particularly in the kindergarten program. If your child would benefit from an intimate environment, small class size and a hands-on experiential approach to learning, give Aspirations a call. It’s not too late to enroll.

the counter) products. The pharmacy is competitive with Costco’s pric-ing on medications and yet you get an amazing level of service and added benefits. For example, with A1c Rx you no longer have to proactively order/refill your routine medications. They take care of it for you automatically and deliver them right to you. Any changes in your medications made by your physicians are sent directly to A1c Rx so they can update and adjust your prescriptions.

Michael is very dedicated as a pharmacist to making a difference in people’s lives by helping them manage what at times can be difficult medication regimens. His goal is to help patients better manage their medications from both a clinical and a logistical standpoint. With conditions such as diabetes on the rise, patients can immediately benefit from having their own personal pharmacist – sim-plifying the process, understanding the various medications, delivering all of the medications and testing supplies, providing one-on-one personal-ized consultations, and even helping choose the appropriate OTC medications based on one’s individual needs.

A1c Rx uses the latest technologies to help them be efficient. They own a “robot” called Max that fills and processes out medications which allows the pharmacists to spend more time with patients. The process also raises accuracy for counting and dosage. They are excited to be the first pharmacy in San Diego County to have the machine.

Michael lives in Promontory Ridge with his wife, Lisa, and their two boys, Gavin (5) & Quinn (2) here in San Elijo Hills. He’s excited to have A1c Rx off the ground and to see that it is truly working for patients. It makes him feel good to know he’s a vital part of a patient’s healthcare team. If you take multiple medications or are looking for a way to simplify and manage your pharmaceutical needs, Michael is very easy going and would be happy to talk with you and answer any questions.
