Page 2 SPRINGFIELD COUNCIL OF PTAS

Happy New Year to all! Thank you for all the hard work you put into making our schools a better place for children and families. I know it seems like our work goes unnoticed sometimes. However, if you look around at all the positive things PTA/ PTSA units are doing, you’ll see YOU are making a big impact. At the SCPTA level you are making the clothing bank, Reflections, RIF, 4th grade play etc. possible for our kids with your donations and volunteer hours. Keep up the great work!

As far as the New Year goes, there are still a lot of great opportunities to be involved in PTA! Below is a list of SCPTA New Year opportunities for and your PTA members:

• Don’t forget to elect your nominating committee this month!

• Get involved with the state Membership Campaign Incentive and be put into a cash drawing. Watch for a local challenge, as well. Invite your friends to join PTA!

• Volunteer at the Clothing Bank!!! Opening Day is January 12th.

• Attend the Reflections Showcase at the Battlefield Mall on January 22nd, 2-3 p.m. Volunteers needed for set up and clean up.

• Sign up to help SCPTA next year on a committee or as a board member. Contact Becky Volz at [email protected] if you are interested in being on the board. We are a fun group!

• The next SCPTA General meeting is February 1st at Holland Elementary. Our guest speaker will be Dana Carroll, Springfield's Child Advocate. She will be talking to us about Early Childhood in Springfield.

• Purchase tickets now to the PTA Founders’ Day Banquet on February 23rd. Send in your Volunteer of the Year, too; so that special person can be recognized at the Banquet.

• If you haven't already, sign up to sell Major Saver Cards for the SCPTA Spring fundraiser to help support all of the programs of the Council and make some extra money for your own school.

• Attend the SCPTA monthly meeting to keep up to date with all the upcoming events and to get your name entered into a drawing at the May meeting for a fabulous Prize!

• Regularly check our website SCPTAMO.com and Facebook for due dates, updates and event dates! Most of the information is in our monthly newsletters which are available on the website. Please look them over each month to keep informed!

Have a Happy New PTA Year!!

Sincerely, Carrie Windes, President SCPTA

National Data Privacy Day

January 28th is worldwide Privacy Day. Did you know that Missouri PTA has developed a guide to Student Data Privacy? This month is a good time to update your Unit so parents or guardians know the laws surrounding their student’s data. There are four key laws: Family Educational and Privacy Rights Act (FERPA), Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) these laws in combination work to make sure students across Missouri and the United States are protected.

STATE INFORMATION:

Missouri PTA Legislative Session

The 2017 Legislative session began January 4, 2017. This is the 99th General Assembly of Missouri. There are many bills that have been pre-filed that MO PTA will be watching closely below are three that may gain traction in this session.

Powdered Alcohol

HB 29 would designate powdered alcohol as a controlled substance. Missouri PTA supports legislation that would mark this as a controlled substance and the restrictions on marketing of these products.

Elimination Of Corporate Income Tax

SB 17 would phase out corporate income taxes over the next 3 years. This would be detrimental to the children of Missouri. Corporate taxes are a huge part of the funding piece for public schools and colleges.

Youth Incarceration

SB 40 would make it law the youth under the age of 17 must be tried in a juvenile court unless certified as an adult. It would also prohibit children under 18 from being held in an adult facility at anytime unless certified as an adult. MO PTA supports this bill.

As bills begin to progress in the process please be watching for JC/DC Action Alerts and take action. Please encourage your membership sign up for the alerts too. Sign up is easy and just take a few moments. The bigger presence we have with our legislators the more we can advocate for the children of Missouri.

A complete list of bills currently being followed by Missouri PTA can be found on mopta.org under Advocacy –Capitol Chatter.

NATIONAL INFORMATION:

National PTA releases a statement on Secretary of Education Confirmation Hearing

National PTA along with other education groups were allowed to submit questions they would like answered during the confirmation hearing. PTA is committed to our position statement and mission and will work with whoever is elected on our goals. You can read the statement here. Continued on page 4

Thanks to these additional schools that have sent a donation to RIF this year: McBride, Robberson, and Mann. Your donations really do make a difference in our ability to provide books to the children and keep the program going.

The second distribution is set for Wednesday February 1st from 9 am until noon. The location has changed to the Teamsters Hall at 1850 E. Division in the assembly room at the back of the building.

MOPTA 2016-17 MEMBERSHIP

CAMPAIGN INCENTIVE:

The Missouri PTA is offering an incentive for all units who increase their membership by at least 10% over last year. All units that meet the percentage increase will be put into a drawing for the cash incentive:

10% increase–$250; 15% increase–$500 and 20% increase $750. This will be awarded at the 2017 Missouri PTA convention in April. Missouri PTA has set a goal of 50,000 members for this year. Check in on the state website for updates on membership progress.

SCPTA WINTER CHALLENGE:

Every SPS PTA/PTSA unit who increases their individual and/or business membership in 2017 will be entered into a drawing for $75. Deadline is March 22, 2017.

Must be a unit in good standing to win. Winner will be announced at our April council meeting.

Legislative Report, continued

Missouri PTA signs the NDD United Coalition Letter

National PTA has signed on to the attached letter from NDD United—a coalition that works to save nondefense discretionary programs (NDD), of which education funding is one of, from devastating budget cuts. The coalition would like as many local, state and national organizations to sign on as possible to send a strong message to Congress urging members to protect NDD programs from further cuts and to end sequestration. National PTA and 22 state PTAs signed on to a similar letter last year. Missouri PTA Executive Committee agreed to add our name to the letter. By signing we are encouraging our lawmakers to protect education and other vital programs across the nation.

Stop Solitary for Kids Campaign

National PTA is pleased to announce that we are a supporting organization for the Stop Solitary for Kids campaign. Stop Solitary for Kids is a national campaign to end solitary confinement of youth in juvenile and adult facilities in the U.S. Stop Solitary for Kids will work to achieve their goals by working with key decision makers at the federal, state, and local levels through research, public education, policy reform, improved facility practices, legislative changes, training, and technical assistance.

Treasurer’s Report

Tips for Treasurers Keeping your financial records up to date will prevent a panic when preparing your end of year report/review. You should never be more than 30 days without a financial report for your board/members. Your bank statements and related check images should be reviewed by someone who isn’t authorized to sign checks to ensure checks are being written for valid expenses of the unit. The person reviewing the documents should sign the statement to document this process. This is a “best practice” but is also required for certain insurance policies. Read through your policy or ask your insurance provider the requirements with your coverage. This practice protects the unit as well as the volunteers. You can contact me at [email protected] if you have questions.

Detailed financial records are available on-line at http://www.nonprofitcentral.biz. Use SCPTA as the username and password.
