PTA/PTSA Volunteers of the Year As we know, PTA would not exist without its wonderful volunteers. This is the time to put them in the spotlight! We would like each school to submit the name of an outstanding PTA volunteer for their school. This person should be someone who has personified the PTA mission by giving of his or her time unselfishly. We would like each school to submit the name of an Outstanding Volunteer’s Name, Digital Photo (in jpg format), PTA/PTSA Unit and Unit President to Carrie Windes at [email protected] NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 5TH!!! Happy New Year to all! Thank you for all the hard work you put into making our schools a better place for children and families. I know it seems like our work goes unnoticed sometimes. However, if you look around at all the positive things PTA/PTSA units are doing, you’ll see YOU are making a big impact. At the SCPTA level you are making the clothing bank, Reflections, RIF, 4th grade play etc. possible for our kids with your donations and volunteer hours. Keep up the great work!

• As far as the New Year goes, there are still a lot of great opportunities to be involved in PTA! Below is a list of SCPTA New Year opportunities for and your PTA members:

• Get involved with the state spring Membership in Action promotion. Invite a friend to join PTA!

• Attend the Reflections Showcase at the Battlefield Mall on January 17th, 1-4 p.m. Volunteers needed for set up and clean up.

• Sign up to help SCPTA next year on a committee or as a board member. Contact Lori Nelson at [email protected] if you are interested in being on the board. We are a fun group!

• Purchase tickets now to the PTA Founders’ Day Banquet on February 18th. Send in your Volunteer of the Year, too; so that special person can be recognized at the Banquet.

• Volunteer at the Clothing Bank!!! Opening Day is January 14th.

• Sign up to sell Major Saver Cards for the SCPTA Spring fundraiser to help support all of the programs of the Council which in turn supports your kiddos and make some extra money for your own school.

• Attend the SCPTA monthly meeting to keep up to date with all the upcoming events and to get your name entered into a drawing at the May meeting for a fabulous Prize!

• Regularly check our website SCPTAMO.com and Facebook for due dates, updates and event dates!

February 15-18 is Take Your Family to School Week – PTA’s twist on Take your child to work day. If you don’t already have something planned or are not sure even where to start with planning this type of event PTA has the tools to help.

Visit the PTA Take Your Family to School Week webpage and you’ll find toolkits for different types of events, ideas on whom to recruit for your team, promotional templates, thank you letters and even an evaluation tool.

Now is a good time to catch your “second wind” for fundraising

for your PTA/PTSA Unit. And when you do have new monies

coming in, be sure they are deposited immediately. Best

practice is to use a deposit form signed by two of your officers

with descriptions of all avenues of income.

Detailed financial records are available on-line at http://www.nonprofitcentral.biz. Use SCPTA as the username and password.

2016-2017 Teacher of the Year nominations

Beginning Monday, Jan. 11, nominations will be accepted for the 2016-2017 Springfield Public Schools Teacher of the Year. The nomination form will be available on the District’s website. Return the completed nomination form by Monday, Feb. 1 to [email protected] . The form can also be sent via school mail to the KAC Human Resources Department, attn: Debbie Rion. All nominations will be kept confidential.

The 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year will be announced Monday, April 18, at the annual Teacher Appreciation Banquet hosted by the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools. The winner will have the opportunity to then compete for recognition at the regional and state level.

on Sunday, January 17.

It will be held in front of JC Penney’s in the Battlefield Mall and

entry viewing will be from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

The awards ceremony will be held at 2 p.m.

All submitted work will be on display.

Parliamentary Tip of the Month

Nominating Committee

It seems like the year just started but now is the time to think about who will make up your nominating committee. Recruiting for PTA positions is hard. Everyone has a million excuses for why they don’t have the time. That is why it is so important for the individuals serving on your nominating committee to have the skill set to reach out and not only explain the importance of serving on the PTA board but also to personally ASK. Make sure these committee members reach out beyond their own personal networks and seek input from your building Principal and teachers. Sometimes there are great advocates already active in the school but not the PTA. These individuals may have a misconception that PTA is cliquish or that their services are not needed. Tapping into both your PTA current network of active members and those potential members is the key to growing your capacity as a board. It’s too easy to ‘recycle’ board members. PTAs are more successful when they reach out to all and continually try to grow.

CLOTHING BANK

Well, we are so happy to report that we finished 2015 with a HUGE day!! Our last day of the semester was Saturday, December 5, and it was one for the record books with over 200 families served in no more than 5 hours!

We opened for shoppers from 9 to 11 am that day and served some 75 to 80 families in those two hours! Central High School’s Key Club, as well as many of our regular, faithful volunteers joined us. Since it was a Saturday, several of those volunteers brought their teenage kids to serve alongside them. Some of us were even surprised to see our own teenagers show up to help and they were lifesavers! We even had SCPTA board members unable to help out that day, so they asked their husbands to work in their place—and they were naturals! We also had a regular volunteer from MSU’s Merchandising & Fashion Design department show up to help on what was maybe the second busiest day of the year--and she brought her dad, grandmother and sister to help, too!

We all took a quick lunch break and tidied up a bit and then re-opened from 1 to 3 pm to serve our English as Second Language (ESL) families. Our great friend Becca Demel was hugely instrumental in lining up interpreters for those families who speak Spanish and Chin. She and the other interpreters helped every family fill out the paperwork so we could check them in to get them properly outfitted with clothes, new socks and underwear and new shoes. It was a huge undertaking, but every sweet family left with everything they needed, plus a donated book as a gift and huge smiles on their faces.

We share all of this because when you have a second in all the chaos to pause and take it all in—it is truly miraculous. Because of the generosity of their time and their donations from all of our PTA/PTSA units and the people in this community; our supporters in SPS administration; the principal and staff at Study Alternative Center; and the patience and kindness of the families we all serve—this ALL VOLUNTEER, ALL DONATION Clothing Bank just works!! It really is amazing!!

We’re working hard to get everything back in order and then we re-open Thursday, January 14, and are then back to our normal routine. We welcome volunteers from 9 to 5 and shoppers from 2:30 to 5 most every Thursday now through the end of April. We look forward to seeing your smiling faces when you come to volunteer or drop off donations. We’re putting the call out now for boys’ coats sizes 10 to 20 and hats and gloves for older kids/teens. We’ve already had several schools and organizations start bringing those things in—and we’ll keep in touch about what we’re needing next. Thank you again for making the Clothing Bank so successful! We cannot tell you all enough that we are ever grateful for the people who help us help others! We could never do this without all of you!!
