supplies.” Donations from the public will continue to

  • aid the associations, groups, and individuals during

and after this unprecedented wildfire disaster.

Help is still needed to assist in HCBC's efforts to

the Animal Disaster Relief Fund with $9,240 going

towards the purchase of hay for evacuation centres

and groups, $11,250 for gas cards and haulers, and

  • Sherman Olson was one of the founders of Horse Council BC in 1980 along with Bill Archibald, Al Sorensen, and

    Danny Bland.

The award was presented because of his dedication to the Trans Canada Trail. "Sherman Olson envisioned the

Trans Canada Trail as a symbol of a unified Canada, one that stretched across the land from sea to sea to sea.

A founding member and president of the Trans Canada Trail Foundation from 1995 to 2001, he motivated

thousands of volunteers by harnessing their energy to keep the project moving forward. Today, the Trail stands

90 per cent complete, thanks in no small part to his passion and enthusiasm."

  • Survey of Awareness,I mplementation andCompliance to the Code ofPractice for the Care andHandling of Equines

    By Margaret Evans

Reprinted with permission from C anadian Horse

    Journals

In 2013, Equine Canada (now Equestrian Canada)

and the National Farm Animal Care Council

released the Code of Practice for the Care and

Handling of Equines. This important document is a

comprehensive guideline for equine owners and

managers, and addresses the basic needs of food

and water, shelter, freedom of movement, company

of others, veterinary care, farrier care, emergency

preparedness, and humane end of life options.

The document also addresses equine welfare in

terms of the Five Freedoms defined as “…a

framework for analysis of welfare within any

system…” Those Five Freedoms include freedom

    from hunger and thirst; freedom from discomfort;

freedom from pain, injury and disease; freedom to

express normal behavior; and freedom from fear

    and distress.

  • billions, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

We can all play a part in eradicating, and preventing the spread of

intruder species. This month we focus on inhibiting introduction, with this

excellent piece from The Invasive Species Council of BC:

    http://bcinvasives.ca/news-events/recent-highlights/its-summertime-and-

    relocating-invasive-species-is-easy

In many cases, an invasive species is so successful that it passes the

point where full eradication is possible, and efforts switch to control and

management. One such species is Perennial Pepperweed (lepidium

latifolium). Native to southern Europe and Western Asia, Pepperweed

has staked a claim in North America – here in BC, it causes the most

concern in Kootenay and Thompson agricultural areas.

Perennial Pepperweed has a deep, extensively creeping root system,

with broken pieces that can travel and lead to more monocultures along

roadsides, in fields, and in disturbed habitats. It is common on riverbanks,

beaches, marshy floodplains, and seasonally wet areas. It is also a

prolific seed producer; one plant can spread over 6 billion seeds per acre,

dropping from the plant or travelling short distances by wind and water.

Therefore, early detection and quick removal of Perennial Pepperweed

populations increases the probability of successful control. Disking alone

is also not effective because new plants sprout from root fragments.

Grazing with goats and sheep is most effective in long term suppression

of Perennial Pepperweed if started before all perennial grasses are lost

    from the community.

    World Class Grooming

Author: Cat Hill and Emma Ford

When owning, training, riding, and showing horses, there is a certain

"look" to which one aspires. World-class "turnout"-a horse in peak

condition, perfectly coiffed and luminous with health, outfitted with

gleaming and well-fit tack appropriate for his sport-can take your breath

away. And while it can certainly play a significant role in a competitive

rider's success, it is just as appealing to have any horse "groomed to the

nines," whether he's headed for an afternoon lesson or just out on the

    trail.
