Pastor’s Column The Messiah Foretold

Today’s story of the cure of a deaf man with a speech impediment is a good example of how much is contained in a simple miracle story. The Greek word mogilalos appears only here in all of the New Testament. It is a technical term referring to someone with a stammer. It is also used only once in the entire Jewish scriptures, in the passage that we read today as our first reading from Isaiah. Clearly, by his choice of this precise word Mark wants us to recognize that what Jesus is doing is the fulfillment of what Isaiah had predicted centuries earlier. In fact, Mark wants us to recognize that Jesus is the Messiah foretold by Isaiah and the other Jewish prophets of old. The word ephphatha, “be opened,” used to describe the restoration of the man’s speech, is another example of a subtle allusion to an earlier prophecy. This time the prophecy in question is from Ezekiel, when he foretells that in the messianic age, “your mouth shall be opened to speak” (24:26). The sophistication of Mark’s narrative is further revealed when we realize that there are multiple levels within a single reference. Mark not only draws our attention back to Israel’s prophetic past, he also points to the initiatory practice of his contemporaries by his mention of such things as spittle, touching of ears, and the use of the word ephphatha, all of which were practices incorporated into the early Church’s baptismal ritual.

In honor of our troops The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. Psalm 18-2

Help the people of Haiti. A massive 7.2 magnitude earthquake has hit Haiti, killing nearly 1300 people, with death toll numbers increasing. The shock leveled homes, leaving thousands without shelter. Countless others are injured and hospitals are already overwhelmed. Your gift to Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is critical for the families in Haiti. When you give, you provide immediate assistance for our Haitian sisters and brothers desperate to survive this devastating situation. Your help will deliver immediate relief. Your prayers and support will make so much difference. Please give a vital gift today - visit www.crs.org.

Feast of Faith Remembering

When Jesus broke the bread on the night before he died, he told his disciples, “do this in memory of me” (Luke 22:19). Christians have been faithful to that solemn command. Our Eucharistic remembering is not nostalgia, nor is it merely historical, recalling events and facts of long ago. In the liturgy, remembering is action. “Do this,” Jesus said. In the Eucharist, we remember by doing. And as we remember, the sacrifice of Jesus is renewed, truly made present, no longer then, but now. After the consecration, each of the Eucharistic Prayers includes a section called the anamnesis, a Greek word that means “remembering.” In this part of the prayer, “the Church, fulfilling the command that she received from Christ the Lord through the Apostles, keeps the memorial of Christ, recalling especially his blessed Passion, glorious Resurrection, and Ascension into heaven” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 79e). We pause and call to mind the whole paschal mystery, Christ’s dying and rising. “We celebrate the memory of his death and resurrection” (Eucharistic Prayer for Reconciliation II). Obeying Christ’s command, we remember. On Saturday, Sept. 18 at noon, pro-life Americans throughout the country will gather at the gravesites of aborted babies and other memorial sites dedicated in their memory for the ninth annual National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children. Solemn vigils will be held at these sites to commemorate the more than 60 million children who have lost their lives to legal abortion since 1973, and to remind our society of the humanity of the unborn child. Community members are invited to join the memorial service at Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road, Wilmington.

Jottings from Religious Education Dear Religious Education families, Here we are: the end of summer and the beginning of the school year. The last year and a half have been a challenge (to say the least), but God’s mercies and generosity still abound. Don’t forget to take time for gratitude. Please keep an eye on your emails for the resumption of the weekly Religious Ed newsletter, which will include information regarding timing for the beginning of the year. We are in need of classroom catechists and other volunteers. Without volunteers, the program cannot run! Please reach out if you feel God may be calling you to serve the children of our parish. In His service, Jessie Emmanuel Dining Room – Friday, September 10 St. Joseph’s provides a chicken meal to Emmanuel Dining Room once a month. Volunteers purchase and cook approximately 24 chicken thighs and/or bring various desserts. Our next date to deliver our meal for Emmanuel Dining Room is Friday, September 10. Please have your cooked chicken and desserts at the Family Center parking lot by 9 A.M. Contact: Peg Janes (302) 656-3635.

Dear Friends, The weekend of September 25 & 26th, parishioners throughout the diocese will be asked to help make the dream of a Catholic education a reality for many struggling Catholic families. Monies raised through this collection coupled with the diocese’s tuition assistance endowment provides financial assistance to hundreds of deserving families who seek a Catholic education for their children but who cannot afford the full cost of tuition. Through this collection, our Bishop is reaching out to believing and worshipping Catholics like you to assist him in ensuring the Catholic commitment to total education of our children does not fade away because people cannot afford it. Since the Church has the mission to educate and this mission directly affects the quality of life we experience as Catholics, all of us have a stake in Catholic education. I ask you to generously support next week’s Share in the Spirit collection. God bless you for your ongoing goodness. To learn more about the Share in the Spirit collection and its importance, go to the diocesan website at www.cdow.org/sharespirit.html. Sincerely, Msgr. Hopkins
