$1.1 Million Awarded in Grants Eighteen organizations have received grants for the period July to December 2010. Although Foundation grants typically are one-year in duration, the combination of historically low IOLTA revenues and the effective date of the revised IOLTA rule led the Foundation to pursue six month grants. Subsequent grants will be made for the period January to June 2011. The current allocation anticipates using additional dollars from a reserve fund. Support from individual lawyers and law firms can aid in sustaining grantee work while IOLTA revenues recover.

Law Related Education — A Family AffairEmily became involved in mock trial like many of her peers — she signed up to be a part of her middle school team in the eighth grade. However, Emily’s experience went beyond her own participation. Her entire family became involved and dedicated to helping her prepare for her competitions — supporting her all the way through high school. With five years of mock trial under her belt, Emily took some law related classes during her high school summers. She also participated as a juror at the National Advocacy Center. Through these activities, Emily challenged herself, learned how to think logically and became more proficient as a speaker and writer. Emily is now finishing her first year of college where she participated on her school’s mock trial team. She hopes to be co-captain next year! Emily is a double major in Political Science and Spanish and is preparing for a career in the law. As it turns out, Emily’s passion for mock trial rubbed off on her brother, Patrick. Patrick has been a part of his middle school mock trial team for the past few years. Emily and Patrick’s mother served as the teacher sponsor and their father has been to every one of Patrick’s competitions. LRE has made a huge impact in the lives of this family. Nominate your Colleague for the 2010 DuRant Award! The DuRant Distinguished Public Service Award has become one of the most prestigious statewide awards members of the Bar can bestow on a fellow attorney. Last year’s recipient was G. Dewey Oxner Jr. with Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, PA. Selection criteria includes meritorious service to the law and the community with eligibility limited to living members of the SC Bar. Sitting judges and current public office holders are not eligible; however, past service in such positions will be considered. The award recipient will be honored at the Bar Convention in January 2011. A nomination form should be completed and submitted no later than November 1, 2010. Goldberg Scholar Announced Ruth Flinn Cunnup, of Rock Hill, attended Erskine College and Columbia International University, where she graduated magna cum laude in 1997. She has been an active church youth leader and served as area administrator for Young Life of York County. Ms. Cunnup is a rising second-year student. This summer she interned with the Rock Hill law firm of Morton & Gettys and participated in the Judicial Observation Externship program in Family Court. She is married to Kevin Cunnup of Rock Hill and has two young children, Sarah Kathryn and Connor.

The Goldberg Scholarship was created at the SC Bar Foundation in honor of I. M. Goldberg, a prominent Charleston attorney who specialized in family law. The scholarship fund provides a $500 award to a deserving University of South Carolina law student each year.
