Everybody is talking aboutthe weather but only A+D knowsSome work tasks and complex operations, such as heavy lifting operations, transport of large constructions and other offshore work tasks can only be done under certain favorable weather conditions. This is a well-known fact in offshore and marine operations and experi-enced seamen all over the world have often developed remarkable skills in assessing weather conditions and predicting the development.

Specialized offshore vessels also install sophisti-cated electronic systems to monitor important parameters, such as wind, current, waves, vessel motions and many others in order to have exact data available.

Also drilling in deeper waters will often bring challenges related to fluctuating and unpredictable currents. These may have a critical influence on both rig location and installation of expensive equipment. Current profilers with capability of measuring sea currents down to more than 1000 meters water depth are available and can be tailor made to the installation.

ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING SYSTEMSInstrumentation company A+D in Sandnes, Norway is a specialist company in building and installing such monitoring systems, typically called

Environmental Monitoring Systems (EMS), Current Monitoring Systems (CMS), Vessel Motion Monitoring Systems (VMS) or Helideck Motion Monitoring Systems (HMS). These systems typi-cally include a suite of sensors to measure these parameters, such as wind sensors, meteorological sensors, motion sensors, current profilers and wave sensors. This information can then be combined with data from the vessels motion sensors and other data in order to see the complete picture.

The DADAS software refined by A+D over many years is simple and user-friendly and will give the user a quick and useful understanding of the situation. DADAS can always be tailor-made to the specific project in order to give the user exactly the data he requires for the project or work task.

FORECASTING WEATHER STATION – SMART SOLUTIONS FOR THE FUTUREA new and exciting development now is the ability to combine measured real-time data with very accurate forecasts of the next hours and days. A+D is now cooperating with the specialist fore-casting company ConWx Aps in order to develop

what is called a Forecasting Weather Station or FCS. The FCS is a combination of a product and a service, where an online weather station is combined with smart forecasting technology in order to give the user both real-time data showing the present situation and a good prediction of the future.

We all know by experience that a standard com-puter generated weather forecast typically has a limited accuracy. By transmitting real-time data to the forecasters, this accuracy can be improved significantly, giving demanding users a much higher quality forecast. This can in turn reduce the amount of downtime considerably.

In applications where downtime costs money – this can be a highly profitable investment!

Contact A+D for further details regarding these products.

areas and ice covered waters. Multiconsult

has during the last 25 years specialized

in technology and engineering subjects

related to planning, construction, design,

and operation of onshore and marine/

offshore infrastructure and installations

in cold climate.

The basis for this expertise is a broad experience with projects for the Arctic area of Northern Norway including extreme cold climate on Svalbard, onshore and offshore infrastructure and platforms in Arctic seas.

This experience is combined with a strategic involvement in research and development projects, both in-house and in cooperation with other major research organizations, like NTNU - Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the University Courses on Spitsbergen (UNIS) and Sintef.

The coast of Norway is characterized by a complex bathymetry, islands, reefs, sub sea cliffs and steep shore slopes. This gives challenges in assessment of wave state and wave propagation and impact of waves on structures. The Barents Sea presents a transition zone to ice covered areas in the European Arctic. The Eastern part is characterized by yearly presence of first year sea ice, occasionally multi-year ice

and icebergs. The western part of the Barents Sea is ice free and poses Arctic challenges such as sea spray icing, in combination with severe wind and waves. Further east and north, the Kara Sea and Arctic Ocean present challenges related to extreme cold climate and the presence of severe ice conditions, with multi-year ice, and icebergs. Multiconsult has in general an extensive experience in costal and offshore infrastructure. In particular this includes specialized experi ence in cold climate and Arctic engineering and design. Our experience ranges from assessing the design physical environment, planning and logistics, onshore infrastructure, harbours and sea front structures, fixed and floating structures near shore and offshore, and includes infrastructure design and ice in ice coved waters.

When a family in Germany or the UK sits down for a good dinner, the food could well have been prepared with the aid of Norwegian natural gas.

Norway is one of the world’s largest gas exporters, covering about 20 per cent of consumption in 27 EU countries. Since domestic production by these nations meets only about 30 per cent of their gas requirements, they depend on imports for heating, cooking, communications and industry.

A well-functioning transport system forms a key link in the value chain from production in rough seas to consumers in Europe. Gassco is the operator for the Norwegian gas transport system, which comprises offshore pipelines and platforms, process plants in Norway, and receiving terminals in four European countries.

Millions of Europeans depend on Norwegian gas for energy.

Gassco makes sure that it reaches them.

The Norwegian company offers a proven EGCS, better known as a scrubber, designed for the maritime industry. Typically, payback time of the investment is only one year.

By “scrubbing” the gas flow with caustic soda (NaOH) enriched seawater, the EGCS removes sulfur and harmful soot particles from vessel exhaust gas. Sulfur emissions to air may cause respiratory illnesses and acid rain. The alkaline water mix neutralizes acid and converts sulfur to harmless sulfate. Discharged to sea, the sulfate has no adverse environmental or health effect.

ImO CALLS fOR 0.1% SULfUR LImITThe International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulation calls for a 0.1% sulfur limit in Emission Control Areas (ECA) by 2015 and a worldwide limit of 0.5% by 2020/2025. The current ECAs include the coasts of North America, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

Ship owners can comply with these new and much stricter rules by:1. Operating vessels on more expensive

distillate fuel with 0.1% sulfur content. 2. Converting to new fuel types (e.g. LNG).3. Continuing their heavy fuel oil (HFO) operations, which most

existing vessels are designed for. Install EGCS for 98% sulfur reduction.

HFO is widely available and much cheaper than distillates. With current price difference between the two fuel types, vessels trading inside an ECA will typically achieve payback time on EGCS investments of one year.

UNIqUE SYSTEm Since 2006, Clean Marine has invested more than 25 MUSD in EGCS development. Currently, the scrubber is the sole system on the market

with true multi-stream exhaust gas handling. One common EGC unit serves all on board exhaust sources included boilers. Without efficiency loss, the system is proven for operations in all waters and harbors globally. With good margin, the EGCS meets the current IMO pH limit for effluent water discharges.

A Clean Marine EGCS is operational and fully certified on the Torvald Klaveness owned bulk carrier MV Balder. In the U.S. ECA, the vessel was first ever to operate this kind of system.

STEEP ORDER GROwTHFor American Eagle Tankers (AET), Clean Marine is supplying EGCS for two shuttle tankers under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries. The tankers are on Statoil charter and will serve oilfields in the North/Barents Sea. One single Clean Marine EGCS unit will manage 10 exhaust sources (2 main engines, 5 auxiliary engines and 3 boilers).

At publication of this article, a major Greek ship owner is also signing up for a Clean Marine EGCS installation on Hyundai Heavy Industries built vessels.

Clean Marine offers ship owners and yards the equipment and support needed for EGCS installation on both ships in operation and under construction. The company expects steep order growth in the years to come.

This according to Torbjørn Rogde, Managing Director in Tristein, one of the leading Marine Operations providers in Norway. The company was founded in 2007 by partners having long and diverse experience from the shipping, petroleum and logistic industry. Since the beginning Tristein has taken significant market shares in Norway, and also operate in other parts of the world.

– Since we started our business we have seen the on-flow of new active operators on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, with strong E&P organizations. Many of these operators

have chosen not to invest in in-house marine operation competence, but rather find it more efficient to rely on Tristein’s wide competence in the marine field, says Rogde.

OUTSOURCING IS COST EffICIENT- Our aim is to provide our clients with easily managed interfaces. That is achieved by providing holistic services, based on tailor-made project tools and templates, resulting in a clearly visualised continuous improvement process. We believe this contributes to making our clients better, in addition to ensuring documented

compliance with both regulatory and industry rules and standards, says Operation Manager Einar Walderhaug.

– The alternative is to establish this competence in-house. That is both time consuming and expensive, and additionally the in-house competence is vulnerable to recruitment from competitors. Interface Management is Risk Management is Cost Management, Rogde summarizes. www.tristein.com

Safe software – safe operationsMarine Cybernetics is an Independent Verification & Validation organization with headquarters in Trondheim, Norway. The company utilizes a simulator based test technology, known as Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) testing to the offshore and mari-time industry in cooperation with major industry partners. Modern vessels have advanced computer systems for dynamic positioning, power generation and distri-bution, lifting and towing operations. It is well known that software problems lead to delays as well as compromise safety. While the test and verification regime for structures and machinery systems is well established, most of the computer systems on today’s vessels are put into operation without sufficient independent testing and verification. HIL testing is a well proven test methodology from automotive, avionics,

space, power electronics, robotics, and nuclear industries, and is now also gaining recognition in the offshore industries. HIL testing facilitates systematic testing of control system design philosophy, functio-nality, performance, and failure handling capability, both in normal and off-design operating conditions. This is conducted in a virtual test-bed where there is no risk to man, vessel, or equipment. For a new-build, independent HIL testing will identify software errors before the vessel is put into operation, and will also shorten commis-sioning time. For a vessel in operation, HIL testing can be used to assess software up-grades before they are taken into use, and used in troubleshooting to eliminate known issues on the rig. Our main goal is to help assure our customer’s success in building, maintaining and operating their assets. We

achieve this by keeping an overarching focus on maximizing the Customer Value of our software testing services. At the core of customer value lies the Integrity and respon-sibility inherent in our third party role and a continuous focus on delivering the right quality in our products and services. The right quality is what our customer needs to be the leader in their industry. As we are a young, vibrant and dynamic company with an international background we have the tools to succeed!

THIRD PARTY HIL TESTINGMarine Cybernetics contributes to safer and more profitable ships and offshore installations, through third party testing

of computer control systems using superior Hardware-In-the-Loop testing technology. This results in significant savings

The chain required had a diameter of 133 mm, with massive links of 200 kgs each was not easy to locate and apparently SOTRA was the only company in the world with a stock of this chain that could mobilize within short notice. In total 1000 mtrs of chain was shipped in 40 containers with a weight of 400 tonnes in total to be used for the salvage of the giant cruise ship. The ship was successfully salvaged by TITAN Salvage during summer 2013.

This is not the largest chain supplied by SOTRA, says General Manager Jan Vindenes, as he point out that the company has recently supplied chain with diameter of 172 mm and weight of 450 kgs per link for the ALLSEAS newbuilding “Pieter Schelte”. The Ship with a length of 382 mtrs and width 124 mtr, is being built at DSME Shipyard in Busan, Korea. -It was our China branch that won that contract, based on the confident the shipowner has with deliveries from SOTRA. China production was not allowed without contribution from a well know supplier with a quality assurance program and 3rd party inspection, inform Mr Vindenes.

So SOTRA mainly focus on big size anchors and chains? – No, we also supply smaller sizes, comment the Sales Executive Nicolai Malmo. – We supply all sizes suitable for the smallest rowing boats until the largest the super tankers. Our customers are fishing boats, tankers, freight ships, tall ships, oil rigs, aqua farms, dry docks, small and large

yachts and shipyards, precise Mr Malmo. – A rough calculation tells us that we have 10,000 tonnes of anchors, chains,

shackles, swivels etc. in stock, and continues, – This is located at our yards in Norway, Netherlands, China and Scotland.

– It has not always been like this, comment Mr Vindenes. – It was my father Jarle Vindenes that established the company in 1980, as
