EDITO / Welcome meSSage m. oleg matYtSIn / mr. oleg matYtSIn

Dear Colleagues, Dear Friends,

FISU is delighted to welcome you to the thirteenth

edition of its FISU Forum on University Sport in

the city of Montpellier, which is a true historical and

traditional university city. It is the first time that

France is organising such an important FISU educa-

tional event after having organised no less than 26

world university championships staged all around

the country, the World University Games in Paris

and the Winter Universiade in Chamonix. Therefore,

we would like to warmly thank the French Univer-

sity Sport Federation, the University of Montpelli-

er and the University Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 for

hosting the FISU Forum 2016.

FISU was a pioneer amongst the international

sports federations when it launched in 1992 the

Forum on University Sport, an event focused on giv-

ing the floor to the students-athletes, in which all

partners gather to exchange formally and informal-

ly best practices, experiences and knowledge on

sport in the framework of educational institutions.

For FISU, it is important to ensure that sporting ac-

tivities, from leisure sport to high-level competition

sport, remain integral parts of higher education

institutions for the benefit of students and citizens

and in accordance with the sport values and goals.

In this perspective, FISU is willing to create plat-

forms to encourage the implementation

of global policies while ensuring great proximity

between the academic and scientific world, stu-

dents-athletes and sport technicians and adminis-

trators. This goal may be achieved only by fully sup-

porting our member federations and the organisers

of the FISU events. The success of this Forum and, in

particular, its legacy is mainly their success.

Each event has its specificities. This is why it

should be underlined that in Montpellier all the

Forum activities will take place on the campuses

of the University of Montpellier and the University

Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3. It should also be men-

tioned that the major international organisations

with which FISU has established strong relations,

including those with which specific actions and

policies have been developed, are in attendance.

Finally, for the first time the Forum programme in-

cludes FISU’s successful Youth Leadership Seminars,

in which participants will have the opportunity to

gain more practical knowledge.

The main subject of this Forum, “From the Ori-

gins to the Future of University Sport”, gives us

the opportunity to communicate on the real chal-

lenges that University Sport is facing. Probably for

the first time in history these challenges also affect

so rapidly and so deeply all areas of what we consid-

ered the foundations of the educational systems. As

a consequence, we believe that the role sport plays

as an activity bringing people together to ensure

wellbeing and a healthy life style is taking by far an-

other dimension.

I would like to extend my special thanks to all those

who contribute to reinforcing the role of the FISU

Forum as powerful channel of communication be-

tween various University sports communities.
