In 1973, President Richard Nixon called for an end to the draft making the United States Army an all volunteer force. Since that day, men and women have continually volunteered to step up and become a part of the world’s most elite fi ghting force. However, volunteering with the m i l i t a r y d a t e s b a c k much

further t h a n 1 9 7 3 . The millions of volunteers who have stepped up to show their support of the military through the United Services Organization is only one of many examples of such volunteering. On installations worldwide, Soldiers, Retirees and their Families as well as civilians often put their best foot forward and volunteer their time and services to enhance the overall quality of life.

Helping others has always been a great way to make a difference. From animal shelters to the Red Cross, volunteers are always a welcome benefi t to various programs and organizations. By volunteering your time, you are not only helping others, you are using your free time in a positive way. For spouses of deployed Soldiers, volunteering is a great way to get out of the house, pass the time and meet new people.

There are a wide variety of volunteer opportunities available on Fort Bragg. So many, that it may be diffi cult for you to choose. As you begin to consider your options, the fi rst step is fi nding out what is available. Army Community Service overseas the Installation Volunteer Program on Fort Bragg. Individuals interested in serving their community get

registered with ACS and begin logging their hours. These volunteers can be seen in a variety of locations around

Fort Bragg from offi ces to Family Readiness Groups, handing out free pies

and soap and with the Red Cross. The Family

Readiness Groups are among

the most recognized

volunteer positions in the

military. As

l e a d e r s , t reasurers,

key callers, s e c r e t a r i e s

and more these Family members

help to support each other throughout the year and

especially during times of deployment.

Volunteer positions are not paid monetarily, however there are several incentives for those who dedicate their

time. All volunteer hours are tracked allowing individuals to acquire work credit for a possible paid position in the future. Experience is an incentive which should never be overlooked. Many people fi nd that by helping others, they enrich their own lives. Anyone can sign up to be a volunteer; however some positions may have certain requirements such as age, background check and more.

Helping other has always been a great way to make a difference in their life, your life and your community. It is never too early to start volunteering! Today is the day you can start to make a difference.

The word “job” can mean different things to different people. For some, a job is simply what you do to pay the bills, while for others their job is their passion and career. For many, a job originally taken to help make ends meet can lead to an exciting new career fi eld. We all strive to have a career we are passionate about and a job we look forward to going to every day. If you are not already in that position, there is no time like the present to start the search.

If you ask a child what he wants to be when he grows up, he will say what he is passionate about now. Some will say baseball player, some will say artist, while others will say Soldier. As we get older, we often realize what we wanted to be is not reasonable or we have lost interest. After all, not everyone can be a professional baseball player and the picture we drew that hung on our mom’s bulletin board for two years may not be gallery worthy. The best way to fi gure out what career fi eld is right for you is to fi nd out what you are passionate about now or what skills you have that are invaluable – we all have some!

Military spouses often face the diffi cult task of maintaining a career while moving with their Soldier to various locations. The Soldier (who is guaranteed a job) often does not understand the stress that goes along with being unemployed or having to “start over” with each move. There are so many things to consider. Am I happy with my career path or do I want a change? What salary am I willing to a c c e p t (knowing it may be less than what the previous job paid) and how far am I willing to drive? There are just a few questions that come into play. It can feel overwhelming.

The fi rst step in answering these and other

questions is to develop a plan. Sit down and write your goals and objectives. Put in write the details of salary, what type of job you are pursuing, what hours are acceptable, how far you will drive and more. This will help you focus your efforts.

With the list in hand, the Army Community Service’s Family Employment Readiness Program (FERP) is your next stop offering assistance, classes and more to help in the quest for the right career. The dedicated staff is here to assist with your search for employment, whether that is your fi rst job in the Fort Bragg area or a change of career. Register for the class that is right for you and you will be well on your way to having your dream career.

We have all heard of the many stay at home work opportunities available today. Are you one of the many Americans looking for the great opportunity to stay home with your own children while still earning money? If so, Fort Bragg Child, Youth and School Services has the perfect opportunity for you.

Family Child Care (FCC) provides Fort Bragg Families an alternative to center based childcare. FCC homes often serve as a second home to many children. The FCC homes are operated in Child Development Services (CDS) certifi ed government quarters on post or a state licensed home off-post by CDS certifi ed adults. These homes are open to children of Active Duty and Department of Defense Civilians.

FCC homes provide a variety of child care options. Full day care is available for children four weeks to 12 years of age. The before and after school care option is open to school age children during the school year. School age children can also attend a FCC home for summer care. Additionally, qualifi ed FCC homes offer overnight, weekend, extended hours, and respite care for children. FCC homes are a great alternative to center based care for parents by providing a smaller environment with the same activity centers as the larger child development centers. Parents also have the choice to place their child in a bilingual home providing even greater learning opportunities.

FCC providers are the backbone of this program. Providers have the wonderful opportunity of working from home while impacting the lives of children on a daily basis. If you are looking for a new career fi eld, the fulfi llment working with children can bring, and the opportunity to work from home, becoming a FCC provider may be the answer to your questions.

All FCC providers receive free training throughout their career with no experience required to start the program. Additionally, there is start up fees associated with becoming a FCC provider. All providers are reimbursed through USDA for the food costs they incur. One of the largest benefi ts for military spouses is the certifi cation earned is valid at all military installations – you can take your job with you when you move!

The benefi ts of becoming a FCC provider are countless but the largest benefi t of all is the impact you will have in the lives of our military children as they grow and develop. To get more information or to apply for this great job, please call 396-3415.

Are you a new golfer who is starting from scratch? Or maybe you’ve played sporadically with a mis-matched set of clubs. And now you’ve decided that it’s time to buy a complete set. But where do you begin?

The choices in clubs can be overwhelming. Each golfer is different. You need to fi nd the right club for you. Forget about what clubs your favorite pro uses. Unless you have a single digit handicap, those clubs will not be right for you. Find clubs that match your level of play.

Beginners and weekend golfers often struggle with topping the ball, not hitting the ball square, hitting behind the ball, wayward shots, or even totally whiffi ng the ball. Finding clubs with maximum forgiveness are what you need. A club with an oversized head will help with inconsistent contact. Irons that are perimeter weighted and cavity-back will help with mis-hits and will send your ball on a straighter fl ight. Hybrid clubs instead of long irons will help those shots out of the rough go higher and farther.

A regulation set consist of 14 clubs: A driver, 3 and 5 woods, 2-9 irons, a pitching wedge, a sand wedge and a putter. Often Beginner Sets will substitute hybrids for the long irons. Each club is designed for a specifi c purpose and to give you the distance needed for a particular shot. Buying a matched set will give you the same feel with each shot no matter what club you’re using.

Now that you’ve decided that you do indeed want a matched set. What’s the next step?

Set a Budget: An inexpensive fi rst set is okay for your fi rst purchase. As a new golfer you’re better off spending the money saved by paying for some lessons from a qualifi ed instructor. As your game improves, you can upgrade to a better set of clubs.

Get Fitted: Whether you are purchasing your clubs from a big sporting goods store or at the Stryker and Ryder pro shops, spend time getting properly fi tted. Whatever way you do it, there are certain things that should be checked. Get clubs that are the right length for you. Select the proper fl ex for your swing. Determine the amount of torque in your swing. Choose the best shaft weight.

Graphite vs Steel: Which shaft is best for you? Typically low handicappers are the only ones who should be using steel shafts. Graphite shafts are lighter and will therefore help you generate more swing speed. Golfers with slower swings – especially seniors, women and juniors – will benefi t from graphite shafts.

They’re can’t be enough said about the importance of choosing the right clubs. Whether you’re buying a high-end set or a beginner set, custom fi tting is a must. Getting fi tted properly won’t miraculously improve your game, but it sure won’t hurt it.

Once you’ve purchased the new clubs, practice, practice, practice. And when you’re out on the course playing, be consistent with your swing. Let the clubs do the work! That’s why you bought them.

Stop by Stryker or Ryder Golf Courses to look for your next set of clubs! Call 396-3980 or 907-GOLF for more information.

Teenagers are often faced with the question, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” For some this is a very simple question to answer, but for others it is decision that may be rather diffi cult. What is the best option for your teen? Trade school? College? Military? Work? High school classes and various other programs are designed to help teenagers in the decision making process. Fort Bragg youth can explore these options through the Child, Youth and School Services HIRED! Program.

HIRED! was designed to provide youth with the opportunity to explore a variety of career choices and ultimately assist them with setting goals. The program offers youth the experiences and skill development necessary to successfully enter the work place. Teens learn to write resumes, how to interview and dress for success, fi nancial management and much more.

So, what is HIRED!? To put it simply, it is an apprenticeship program. Teens between the ages of 15 and 18 years old with a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average sign up for the program to enhance their knowledge, skills and ultimately work towards selecting career goals. Once signed up, teens attend the HIRED! workshop, which is a mandatory part of the program. Upon successful completion of the workshop, youth will begin their apprenticeship. These positions are quite varied and are designed to match with the interest of the teens.

For more information on this program, please call 396-9275.

HIRED! - Setting GoalsFor Your Future

Family Readiness GroupsA great opportunity to volunteer on post is through your Units’ Family

Readiness Group (FRG). The FRG is an offi cial Command-sponsored organization of Family members, volunteers and Soldiers belonging to a unit. This group of volunteers provides an avenue of common support and assistance, and a system of communications among family members, chain of command and community organizations. FRG goals include sustaining the military mission through provision of support, outreach, and information to family members. FRG’s

are an integral part in the Family and Soldier Readiness System and have numerous opportunities for volunteering with positions such as

Key Callers, Treasurers, FRG Leaders and Co Leaders, or Committees such as Hail and Farewell, Special Projects, and Fundraising. You can be as involved as you want to be.

FRG benefi ts are seen throughout the family, soldier and Unit. They foster family member relations with a sense of belonging to the community and providing a vehicle for families to make friendships while gathering information on upcoming deployments or Unit activities. They provide

support and a sense of shared caring for Soldiers. FRG’s help develop a confi dence in Soldiers that their family members will receive reliable and

friendly support while the soldier is away. This enhances the Soldiers physical and mental readiness and stabilizes the force. Through prevention, family

activities and education programs, FRG’s can help families overcome problems that are likely to impact adversely on Soldier performance.

Get involved - the life you change might just be your own.
