FERNANDO ALONSO Hailing from Oviedo in Northern Spain, Fernando Alonso is a 2-time Formula 1® World Champion and is widely considered by many to be one of the greatest drivers of all time.

After early success in karting, Alonso made the move to single seaters in his late teens. It wasn’t too long before his strong performances in Formula 3000 were noticed by the F1® teams. After testing for Renault in 2000, he was called up for a race seat at Minardi in 2001. The car was poor, but Alonso did enough to show his potential to teams further up the grid.

Alonso was signed by Renault for the 2003 season, thus beginning his most successful stint in Formula 1 that culminated in back to back World Championships in 2005-2006. He returned to the team after an unhappy year at McLaren in 2007, before setting his sights on a drive with Ferrari in 2011. Alonso’s first year with the Scuderia was his most successful, with five wins on the way to a very close 2nd in the championship behind Sebastian Vettel.

After narrowly missing out on the driver’s crown two more times, Alonso moved to McLaren in 2015 when the team began using Honda engines. With reliability issues and power – or lack thereof – a common occurrence, Alonso spent the last few seasons in the back half of the grid.

In 2017, Alonso also competed in the Indy 500 as a rookie driver. He performed strongly, leading the race at one point before his Honda engine broke. Alonso remains with McLaren for 2018, with the team now using Renault engines.

ESTEBAN OCONEsteban Ocon may have landed his F1® seat mid-season in 2016, following the departure of Rio Haryanto, but the Frenchman arrived on the grid with plenty of relevant experience, having tested both that season’s Renault and Mercedes F1 machinery.

Born in Evreux, Normandy in 1996, the Frenchman predictably began his career with success in karting, before progressing to single-seaters in 2012.In 2014, Ocon won the FIA F3 Euro championship in some style - his season included nine wins, 21 podiums, 15 pole positions and seven fastest laps. He also made his F1 Grand Prix weekend debut, with a Friday practice outing for Lotus at the Abu Dhabi season finale.

A member of Mercedes’ junior driver programme, Ocon was ‘loaned’ to Renault as their F1 reserve for the start of 2016. He also tested for Mercedes’ F1 squad and began his first full DTM campaign with the company.During August’s F1 summer break of 2016, it was announced that he would join the Mercedes-powered Manor team for the remainder of the year, making his Grand Prix race debut at Belgium’s famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

In 2017, Ocon was a model of consistency for Force India. Finishing in the points in the first five races of the year, the highlight of which was an impressive 5th place finish at the Spanish Grand Prix. A streak of 27 consecutive races without a DNF was brought to a halt following a clash with fellow countryman Romain Grosjean.

Ocon finished his first full season in Formula 1 with 87 points and 8th in the championship after an 8th place finish in the season-ending Abu Dhabi GP.
