The main theme of this tutorial is how there aremultiple solutions to any modeling challenge youmight encounter and evaluating the suitability ofdifferent approaches depending on the purposeof the model. Different techniques might beused when modeling for manufacturing asopposed to illustration, and different techniquesare more commonly used when ‘Designing’ asopposed to ‘modeling.’ There’s more than oneway to skin a hat.This is an ‘advanced’ tutorial. It is intended to beeasy to follow, but the emphasis here is on whatNURBS and Rhinoceros can do, not necessarilyhow to execute every command prompt-by-prompt. The Evaluation version of Rhino includesa number of basic tutorials to help you getstarted. Commands are referred to by the nameused for typed entry and are HighlightedHighlightedHighlightedHighlighted .

This is might be the first solution that wouldcome to mind when considering this problem.While this may look like a good start, it’s notreally very promising considering what we ‘want’to do. If we compare the tunnel edge curve tothe intersection of the sweep with the shell(curvemade with IntersectIntersectIntersectIntersect ,) it's not really close.It would be possible to add more section curvesto the sweep and/or point-edit to get closer butit would take a lot of work.
14141414.... Build a Sweep1 along the side profilesurface. It doesn't affect the surface much, butuse the AlignAlignAlignAlign withwithwithwith SurfaceSurfaceSurfaceSurface option.
The plan to sidestep the 5-sided surface issue inthis case would be to edit the surface--I justnudged a couple points here--so that it getstrimmed off by the the brim. That's great, butagain it does not lend itself to precisely aligningwith our 'critical' features.
