What our Clients are saying:BalletJazzHip Hop

I have fi bromyalgia and my doctor and physical therapist have both told me that staying active is essential. Zumba made me step out of my comfort zone and try something new, but I am so glad that I did. Thank you for offering this class to everyone.

My daughters have learned not only poise and grace, but confi dence in who they are. They devel-oped lasting relationships with friends and teachers, met role models, and became positive role models themselves! It’s a great feeling to leave my girls where they are safe and happy. It is so much more than dance!

An installer of solar panel systems, for homes and businesses, with a showroom in Madison Heights, is now serving Forestand adjacent areas.

Solar panels are growing in popularity as a cost-savings measurethat also increases the value ofhomes. Others embrace solar panelsas a way to reduce the environmen-tal impact of their homes.

Owner and manager of Afford-able Energy Concepts (AEC), DavidWall, is enthusiastic and passionateabout his work.

“Most new solar-panel systemswill pay for themselves in a reason-able amount of time,” says Wall,“starting with rebates of 30%-80%,and with accumulated energy sav-ings over the years.”

AEC’s staff is highly trained bythe manufacturer, which guaranteesit will be installed correctly. All work comes with a warranty, andAEC will even help with financing. The office will handle the paper-work required for state and federal rebates.

David says, “with financing, only a small, up-front payment is

necessary…in some cases, no money is necessary upon installation.” If you may be interested in at least knowing if your home or busi-

ness is suitably located to efficiently utilize solar power, you can callDavid and give him your address. He will then “Google-Earth” your

home or office building to seewhat direction it faces and itsproximity to trees and theirshade.

After determining that youwould be a good prospect forsolar power, Wall will thencome out to your home andconduct an Solar System SiteAnalysis. Extremely thorough, the analysis will allow AEC togenerate an accurate proposalthat provides important infor-mation such as the systems pay-back period and rate of returnon investment.

A visit to their new showroom, where they display a solar panelsystem and how it produces electricity and hot water, is worth thetrip. It is located in their solar-powered office (of course!) off Rt. 29in Madison Heights.

Carolyn Seaman, owner of Virginia Handcrafts in the ForestSquare Shopping Center (next to Kroger), never imagined she wouldhave a life in retail. Havingmoved to Richmond from Lynch-burg over 15 years ago, being backhome is an adjustment, but a wel-come change.

“I worked in a governmentagency for many years and feltvery restricted. I needed a morecreative environment to live andwork,” Carolyn said.

Upon returning to Lynchburg,Seaman rented space atRiverviews Art Space and beganto connect with a community ofartists and craftspeople.

“I was listening to people say they missed Virginia Handcraftsand the beautiful handcrafted pieces that Mrs. Harriss carried,” Car-olyn said. She contacted Mrs. Frances Harriss (Virginia Handcrafts’original owner) to discuss “re-opening” Virginia Handcrafts.

“Mrs. Harriss has been excited, gracious, and extremely support-ive from the very beginning!” Seaman reports. Virginia Handcrafts

in Forest offers many of the same artists’work and many new artists’ work. Car-olyn strives to maintain the integrity andquality that Mrs. Harriss worked hard toachieve over the 40 years she grew herbusiness.

Carolyn travels extensively to meetartists, learn about their process, and eval-uate the quality of their work. Her goal,as was Mrs. Harriss’ goal, is to providecustomers with unique, quality pieces, handcrafted by American artists andcraftspeople. Currently, Virginia Hand-crafts offers items from more than 100artists and craftspeople.

After a 22-year career with a well-known local retail/manufac-turer, Vera Swain decided to pursue a dream which was to open herown retail shop inspired by the mountains of Virginia, North Carolinaand Tennesee.

Called Beyond These Hills Gallery & Home Accents, Vera offersan interesting variety of home accessories, art and unique gift items, from sources locally and outside the area. Much of her inventory isinspired once again by the beauty that surrounds us.

“We fully support the extremely talented artists, artisans andcraftsmen found in the surrounding area”, Vera says. Currently dis-playing are a variety of original paintings, as well as prints, by localartists such as Betty Caithness, Barbara Cocks, Pat Dougherty, PatrickKnowles, Mary Stamps and James Underwood, just to name a few. Also displayed at press time is photography by Vickey Duncan,Pauline Goodman, Sam Maddox, and Robert Miller, whose“FoggyWood” photo is being featured in the National Geographic book Sim-ply Beautiful Photographs.

New local art as well as pottery, quilts, candles, jewelry andunique items such as bottle lights are added weekly, so there is muchto enjoy within a collection of wildlife, nature and outdoor themes.Vera laughs as she says there’s something for everyone here; whetheryou’re one of the guys that enjoys golfing, fishing or nature or one ofthe ladies that enjoys the softer, more feminine items.

Beyond These Hills Gallery is one of two Bob Timberlake dealers

found in Virginia; carrying many of Timberlake’s signature piecessuch as lamps, candlesticks, mirrors as well as his art.

A recent addition to the selection here is Fishwood Farm's AlpacaNook. A variety of Alpaca products such as foot warmers, shawls andcaps are now available, just in time for the Holidays!

Vera has found thatthere is a demand forart/craft and decoratingclasses in the area, so sheoffers a variety of classesfor all ages and levels. Forexample, local artist EdGowen will be teaching atwo-day class, December17th and 18th, which willallow students to completea beautiful oil painting“Evergreen and Old Ivy” just in time for Christmas.

Dr. Patrick Stull, DC, and his wife Elizabeth's name for theirpractice, "New Life", is dually appropriate.

The Stull's, including their 8-year-old son, Joshua, started a newlife in the Lynchburg area after moving here from Georgia earlierthis year.

Located in the large, brick building with white columns, at thecorner of Rt.s 811 and 221 (Forest Rd.), New Life Family Chiro-practic & Wellness is where Ollis Chiropractic used to be (Dr. Ollisrelocated to the Louisville, Kentucky area...the Stull's took over hispractice).

A Marine veteran after serving for 4 years, Dr. Stull first becameinterested in chiropractic care, as a career, about ten years ago whenhe was having back pain during his Marine Corps service, when hewas helped by a chiropractor. It was then solidified after his sonJoshua, then only about 12 months old, responded well to chiroprac-tic care for an ear infection. Also, it didn't hurt to have an olderbrother Dennis, who has been a chiropractor practicing in the Min-neapolis area for 6 years.

After an Honorable Discharge from the Marines, Dr. Stull wentback to school in his hometown of Madison, Wisconsin, studying at

the University of Wisconsin and eventually transferring to the presti-gious Life University of Marietta, Georgia. He graduated after 7 1/2years with a Doctor of Chiropractic and a Bachelors of Science de-gree, and has since picked-up 180 hrs. of pregnancy and pediatricpost-graduate studies.

"Our goal is to provide chiropractic and wellness services to allmembers of the family, regardless of age or general health," Stullsays. "You don't have to be sore, or old, before seeing us, becauseprevention is the key to a healthy life."

He went on to explain that he is also Webster Certified, which isa famous technique for allowing babies to get into the best possibleposition for birth.

"Health is more than just feeling well, it involves moving, eating, and thinking well," Stull said. “We strive to help you and your fam-ily increase your quality of life through safe and effective chiroprac-tic care.”

Patrick's wife Elizabeth is the office manager, and their sonJoshua helps to entertain the younger patients or visitors. This istruly a family that wants to help you and yours.

Have you heard ofBlue Ridge MontessoriSchool? If you haven’t –you need to do some re-search to learn about thiswonderful treasure of aschool for children ages 18 months – 6 years (in-cluding kindergarten.)

Blue Ridge Montes-sori School (BRMS)opened in the fall of 1985by its founder Tom Taylor. The school is located at

1071 Woodberry SquarePlace, Lynchburg 24502.

BRMS offers children a beautiful learning environment prepared in accordance with the Montessori prin-ciples of education. Dr. Maria Montessori developed this edu-cational approach in 1907. It is based on herunderstanding of children’s natural learning tendenciesand her belief that the years from birth to the age of sixare the most important in a child’s life.

In 2009 the school moved to its new location on Rt.221 across from Scott’s Mulch and More, just past theCottontown Rd. intersection. The building was designedto be a Montessori school from the ground up, and hassuch special features as radiant-heated floors (becausemany Montessori lessons are done on the floor), big win-dows for natural light, and skylights in the Primary class-rooms. The new design has two Primary classrooms (ages3 years to 6 years) and two Early Learner classrooms(ages 18 months to 3 years). Each classroom has accessto a covered porch for outdoor environments, and a play-ground area with classroom gardens, and a fish pool/wa-terfall.

The Blue Ridge Montessori classrooms are designed to havematerials available for children in the following areas:

Practical Life: Children learn to care for the environment,as well as their personal needs. Activities such as food prepa-ration refine motor skills, promote concentration and enable thechild to live graciously.

Sensorial: Special materials designed for the refinementof all senses help the child to clarify, classify and comprehendthe world.

Mathematics: Specifically designed work allow childrento naturally discover abstract concepts, preparing the way fordeeper understanding of math operations.

Language: Vocabulary enrichment, oral language explo-ration and learning letter sounds and symbols encourage chil-dren to write and develop a love of reading.

Cultural Awareness: Children discover the world throughexperiences in nature, earth study and global awareness.

The children at BRMS engage in this meaningful work withspecially designed Montessori materials under the guidance oftrained Montessori teachers. Through this process the childgains a sense of purpose, independence and deep satisfaction.

“My children have learned the ability to make choices forthemselves, and furthermore how to make good, soundchoices,” says one BRMS parent. “It is amazing to watch achild thoughtfully come to positive conclusions about the worldon their own and take such pride in their purposeful work attheir school.”

Another proud BRMS parent adds, “My children are so ob-viously happy in this beautiful environment. I, too, have learnedand gained so much from this approach and have thoroughlyenjoyed what we consider this extension of our home.”

Blue Ridge Montessori School offers two programs; anEarly Learner program for children ages 18 months – 3 yearsand a Primary program for children ages 3 years – 6 years. Thisyear BRMS had the unique opportunity to expand and nearlydoubled in size. BRMS is currently accepting applications andhas limited spaces available.

Every time you get together, you talk about “the time.” The time you all piled into Grandpa’s station wagon. The time Aunt Pat challenged Aunt Debbie to a limbo contest. The time the cousins bought matching ten-gallon hats. Every time you get together, you give yourselves something to laugh about the next time.

Imagine the stories you’d tell, the times you’d have, sailing together on a magical Disney cruise.

It’s the ideal vacation choice for big families. Disney cruise ships offer outstanding accommodations with some of the roomiest staterooms in the industry including a select number of connecting rooms and family suites. And every detail is taken care of for you, even the complicated parts – the how-can-14-people-eat-dinner-at-the-same-time and who wants- to-stay-where parts.

Each of you, all 14 or 18 or 22 of you, will be able to build the vacation that you want, with plenty to do when you feel like being together – deck parties, excursions, time at Castaway Cay, Disney’s own private island – and just as much to do when you feel like being apart.

This isn’t just a family vacation. This is the family vacation that will be the talk of every family vacation from now on.

Forest Dental Center ContinuesFree Event

Every fall for the last three years local dentists have gath-ered at Forest Dental Center on Graves Mill Road to providea day of donated dental services. This event called Dentistryfrom the Heart has grown over the years and now includesdentists from VA Beach and Rockingham County as well aspatients from other communities. This year 15 dentistsworked together with Dental hygienists and many other vol-unteers to provide dental treatment that included fillings, ex-tractions and cleanings to over 200 patients.

According to spokesperson Cari Zello the volunteer doc-tors and team worked over nine hours to provide treatmentthat would have cost about $69,000. “It seemed as thoughthis year the need was greater” Zello said “and there were

My name is Sheeba. I am a retriever/collie mix dog and was res-cued by the Hobson family about 4 years ago. I share my house withanother rescue dog, 4 rescue cats, 3 kids (not rescued) and two bigpeople.

My mom loves animals and, about 18 months ago, she opened astore that is for animals like me. The store is called Pet Craze at West-ern Ways.

Pet Craze has a self serve dog wash (1st one in this area). I walkup a ramp into a big stainless steel tub and get bathed with this reallynice shampoo, dried with towels provided by the store and thengroomed with dryers at a grooming station, if needed. Aprons are alsoprovided in case I splash my mom. I like being with my mom whilebeing bathed and my mom likes that she can give me a bath withouther back hurting and that Pet Craze cleans up the mess! Basically, PetCraze provides everything that a dirty dog like me needs to get cleanat a very reasonable cost.

Before the store opened, I noticed that my food changed. Mymom went out of town and took a class from an animal nutritionistand learned more about what is healthy for me and my adoptive sib-lings. Therefore, at Pet Craze you can buy highly nutritious dog andcat food. Also, if you want a certain food for your animal, Pet Craze

can special order your requests. Pet Craze has snacks and supplements.Since my food has been changed, I have noticed that my coat is shinierand I feel better!

When my mom takes me to Pet Craze, I just want to play! Thereare sooooo many toys!! Toys for big dogs like me, little toys for mypetite friends, and toys that I haven’t seen anywhere else. There arealso great dog and cat toys (gifts) for people.

I would be remiss to not mention that my mom has this other storecalled Western Ways that is for horses (go figure). Western Ways sellsall sorts of horse stuff (English and Western), cowboy boots, westernclothing, kid toys, Dansko shoes andmuch more. This store has threeadopted cats named Mittens, Miles, and Ollie.

Come visit us at WesternWays and Pet Craze at WesternWays!

Lacrosse in ForestBy now everyone knows that lacrosse has come to For-

est. The sport started at Forest Youth Athletic Association in2006 with about 35 players, all boys. In the spring of 2010,nearly 190 players from ages 7 – 18 participated on sevenboys’ teams and two girls’ teams. With such rapid growthcomes challenges. Fortunately, a group of parents has takenon the challenge.

Effective Nov. 1, 2010 a new club has been formed forhigh school players in the area. The Forest Lacrosse Club, anew 501(c) 3 organization, will take over the responsibilitiesof running a lacrosse program for high school boys and girlsfrom the area. While the goal is ultimately to get lacrosseinto the Bedford County schools, the Forest Lacrosse Clubwill welcome players from all around the area for the spring2011 season. Participants do not have to be residents of For-est or Bedford County to play for the Forest Lacrosse Club.

Last spring there were three boys’ teams and one girls’

team at the high school level. The FLC Board of Directorsanticipates at least two boys’ teams and two girls’ teams thiscoming spring. Given the rapid growth of the sport in our area,

there is a wide range of skill from beginners to experiencedand teams will be formed to accommodate all levels. Tryoutswill be held at the beginning of the season to help with the for-mation of the teams. Both the boys’ league and the girls’

league will have an elite (or varsity) team that will play a var-sity schedule. The remainder of the players will be placed onother teams that will play a junior varsity schedule.

Opponents will include club teams as well as some highschools in the Central and Southwest Virginia areas, such asRustburg High School, New Covenant School, Hargrave Mil-itary Academy, Williamsburg Lax Club, Swift Creek, EastRoanoke, New River Valley, South County, Fluvanna, Shenan-doah and the Richmond Shock. In past years EC Glass HighSchool, Salem High School and Patrick Henry High Schoolhave played our varsity and junior varsity teams, but with theaddition of varsity lacrosse at William Fleming High School aswell as others in their district, in the spring of 2011 theseschools now have full varsity schedules with other VHSL pro-grams and cannot schedule games with clubs like Forest.

As school systems in the area add lacrosse to their list ofvarsity sports, club teams like FLC will be forced to travel far-ther during the regular season. For this reason, the mission ofthe Forest Lacrosse Club will be to work towards becoming anapproved sport in Bedford County Schools. Over the next fewyears, the FLC will work to become a club that competes on avarsity level and will prepare players for the transition to be-coming a school team. Once the sport is

Merchants is Returned to Bedford County.“If citizens realize the importance of shopping locally, there will be less

pressure to raise other taxes, such as the real estate tax. They(the County) can’t continue to rely so heavily on real estate

and personal property taxes to provide all of theservices that people want.”

Other Forest area shopping centers include the New London Food Lion Center (on Rt. 460) and Forest Square.
