What is a structure? It is anything with a definite size & shape

It is used for a specific function (purpose)

Designed to handle forces pushing and pulling against them and the load (weight) that they need to support (hold up)

Remember SSFF!

Structural Strength verses Structural Stability?Structural Strength refers to the structure’s capacity (ability) to hold itself up!

Structural Stability is the structure’s ability to maintain it’s position, even when it’s acted on by a force!

For example….a skyscraper must have the structural strength to hold itself up (tall and strong), but also must have the structural stability to maintain it’s position (response to an earthquake or strong wind)

Function?Function is the overall purpose or use of the structure

If a structure is not useful and doesn’t serve a function...then why build it?

When designing a structure, it’s critically to design it for an intended function or purpose!

Can you think of some structures that have a specific purpose?

Is an Inukshuk a structure?● Definite size or shape?● What is it’s purpose?● Does it handle forces

pushing and pulling against it?

● Does the force effect the load (weight) it needs to support (hold up)?

Name another structure?● Does it have a definite size and shape?● Is it used for a specific purpose?● Is it specifically designed to handle “forces” of pushing and pulling against

them and the load (weight) that it needs to support (hold up)?

What defines a “good” structure?

Write down 5 reasons why the following image would be classified as a “good” structure?

Are “aesthetics” important to a design of a structure?Aesthetics - the “pleasing appearance” or “overall effect” of an object

What are the some structures that you can think of that are “aesthetically” pleasing?

Why are some structures build with aesthetic features and some not?

Lab...Analysis of Aesthetics #2Question? How to aesthetics & function combine to play roles in everyday items?

Materials: 3 or 4 school organizers or binders, paper, pencil, ruler

Procedure:

1. Look at the items, write down the function/purpose? 2. Make a chart of how the items meet the basic function (first column)3. List additional features (second column)4. List the aesthetic features (third column)

Collect Data: What is the basic purpose? How do the items differ?

Analyzing & Interpreting: How are the items aesthetically different/same?

Forming Conclusions: Are the difference related to their function or aesthetic design? How do designers try to incorporate “fashion sense” into their design.

Applying & Connecting: How does marketing/advertising attempt to influence consumers?

Read pages 260 - 263

● How to structures stand up under a load (weight)?

● What forces act on structures?● What materials and design characteristics

contribute to a structure’s strength and stability?
