THE FORBES INTERNATIONAL 500Foreign stocks got off to a bad start in 2001, but the world's biggest corporations should finish this year on a better note.

U.S. investors haven't been helped much lately by buying abroad. Our bear market has spread to most parts of the globe, and the losses overseas havebeen compounded by the strength of the dollar. Indeed, of the home markets that have five or more Forbes International 500 companies only two, South Korea and Mexico, are in positive territoryyear-to-date, with U.S. dollar gains of 24% and 22%, respectively. Morgan Stanley national indexes show (in dollar terms) losses through May ranging from1% for Australia to 33% for Finland. If you had stayed home you would have lost only 5% on the S&P 500 from Jan. 1 to May 31. If you can withstand the risk, though, there are some intriguing opportunities in overseas markets. This survey of 500 large foreign firms will give you ataste of what's out there. In order to qualify for this year's International 500, companies had to have at least $5.2 billion in revenues, be incorporated outside the U.S. and bepublicly traded as of May 31. Revenues and profits were converted into U.S. dollars using the average exchange rate spanning each firm's fiscal year. Weused fiscal year-end exchange rates for assets.
