Term 1 - Week 9 “Education for a Better Quality of Life” Page 1 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT As we head into the Easter break I reflect upon what has been a very productive time for the staff and students of Forbes HS. This will continue into the last two weeks of term before a well-earned and restful school holiday period. Please be aware that due to ANZAC Day falling on a Monday and being followed by a Staff Development Day on the Tuesday students will return to school on Wednesday 27 April. In relation to ANZAC Day our school will take a lead role in the town commemorations this year. Isobelle Herbert of Year 11 has been invited to deliver an address which captures her thoughts and feelings on the ‘Spirit of ANZAC’. As a school we will again proudly march along with the community to pay our respects. I encourage all students to join us on the day, we will be meeting at 10.00am in Cross Street with students required to wear winter uniform. Keep an eye out for further information on our Facebook page closer to the day. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is engrained within the culture of our school through our core values of being responsible, respectful, honest and doing your best. These values form the basis of the explicit teaching and reinforcement of positive behaviours across our school setting. Throughout term 2 we will be launching a new PBL logo to coincide with a review and renewal of our practices. I would like to acknowledge Milann Henderson who designed our initial PBL logo and congratulate Gabby Cotterill who designed our new logo and created our mascot PaBLo the platypus. Students have been involved in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities over the past three weeks. These have included Harmony Day celebrations at school and with Forbes North Public; raising awareness of bullying through ‘Bully No Way Day’ and various sporting teams through the Combined High Schools knockout competitions. Participating students are to be congratulated on their involvement and their commitment to meeting the expectations in regards to keeping up to date with classwork and assessment tasks. Year 12 will be completing their mid-course HSC examinations from 30 March until 7 April. I encourage all students to prepare thoroughly and use this experience as an opportunity to identify strengths and areas for further improvement. The school community wishes you all the best over the course of this period. On Thursday 24 March Forbes HS hosted the Student Representative Council regional conference. In all, 9 schools were represented by approximately 130 students. Throughout the day students developed leadership, goal setting and networking skills. This was also an excellent opportunity for our students to make connections and bonds with other students from rural communities and build their capacity to develop positive relationships. I hope everyone had an enjoyable Easter and that all students had a safe and relaxing break. OPEN BOYS SOCCER

The first round of the WSSA Boys Open Soccer saw Forbes High travel to Parkes on Friday 4

th March to play

the local team. The Parkes team contained a State Representative Goalkeeper and looked to be a strong team. The temperature was forecast to be 37 degrees Celsius and by kick off time was getting towards that. The game was fast paced and the teams evenly matched. Midway through the first half Parkes scored. Forbes had some good opportunities to score but was unable to convert despite a great break and pass from Jordy Brett producing a near miss from Reece Davie. Finally ten minutes from full time, another break from Jed Herbert led to a pass to Reece Davie who slotted it past the Parkes goalkeeper: 1-1. After 10 minutes of extra time the score remained 1-1. This meant a Penalty Shootout would be contested to break the deadlock where five players from each team attempt to score a goal from the penalty spot. After 5 shots each, the team with the most conversions wins. After three shots each the tally was Parkes 3, Forbes 1. That meant we had to convert the next two AND Parkes miss their two to force the shoot-out into sudden death. Well, Jordy Brett and Matt Molloy banged the ball into the net, and then Matt Molloy saves the next two penalties. Game on. Up comes Kurt Mylecharane and coolly slots it home. Suddenly from nowhere Forbes is in control. Parkes have to put their next shot away or else it is game to Forbes. The Parkes player lifts it over the crossbar. Game to Forbes! Round 2 vs. Cowra High at Botanical Gardens, Forbes, Monday 21

st March, 2016

Game Two saw our boys up against last year’s semi-finalists, Cowra, a team that boasted several regional representative players. On a soggy pitch, our boys were two goals down in the first few minutes. The boys tried to lift but this side was well drilled and had the run of play. At half time we were down 6-0. In the second half, we had some good passages of play and threatened their goalkeeper on a couple of occasions. Cowra scored another two goals leaving the final score of 8-0. In both games, I was impressed with the determination and sportsmanship of our boys. In the first game in particular our back four of Jack Piercy, Dock Rix, Warren Baxter and Tye Stewart were outstanding. Matt Molloy and Reece Davie played strongly in both games. The boys that normally play the rugby codes adapted very well to the round ball game. Well done also to our youngest members Ricki Boswell and Jacob Collits who gave a good account of themselves. The boys were a pleasure to coach. Cowra now move into the next round and we wish them well.

Wishing Everyone a Safe and Happy Easter

DRAMA NEWS The Drama Ensemble has been working hard on creating a performance around the theme of Harmony, ready for performance on Harmony Day. They centred their performance on the plight of refugees and the misinformation that informs many Australians. The students first performed at the Forbes High Monday morning assembly. They then travelled to Forbes North Primary School where they performed again. The students received excellent praise from teachers, their peers, and their audiences.

OPEN NETBALL On Thursday, 17th March, our Opens Netball team competed in the Western area CHS competition. They played extremely well, winning their games against Orange 2, Bathurst and Parkes to come first in their pool. They then went on to play Orange in the final and were beaten 39-26. REMINDER TO PARENTS A reminder to parents to notify the school about your child’s health While the main role of the school is to provide education, we want to work with our parents/carers to keep your child healthy and safe at school. We welcome information from parents about your child's health, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. Our school asks for medical information when you enrol your child. It is also important that you let us know if your child’s health care needs change or if a new health condition develops. Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes and other health care related issues (including prior conditions such as medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be provided to the school by parents. This will greatly assist our school in planning to support your child’s health and wellbeing. If your son/daughter has already been identified with a medical condition through their enrolment papers an Individual Health Care Plan has been sent out to the parents/carers early this Term. This plan needs to be completed by parents/carers and then returned to Forbes High School. We ask for your cooperation in this matter as it is important to us that we can provide the best management for your child’s condition whilst in our care. The Department of Education requires students who are identified with severe medical conditions to have an ASCIA Action plan (Asthma or Allergy). This plan needs to be completed by your child’s doctor and then returned to Forbes High School. Please also remember to notify staff in the school office of any changes to your contact details or to the contact details of other people nominated as emergency contacts. We appreciate your assistance in this regard and assure you that any information you provide the school will be stored securely and will only be used or disclosed in order to support your son or daughter’s health needs or as otherwise required by law.

SQUASH Well done to the boys and girls squash teams who played Parkes on Friday. The boys were victorious 3 games to 1 while the girls went down by the same score. Good sportsmanship was shown by all.

HARMONY DAY – BULLYING NO WAY On Monday, March 21 we celebrated and recognised the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence and Harmony Day. A Drama performance, organised by drama teacher Andrew Swan, was presented to students at Monday’s assembly and then again take at Forbes North Public School later in the day. The theme highlighted the importance of understanding differences in cultures, the fear of the unknown and the plight of refugees and asylum seekers. Music teacher, Don Ruttan arranged for our talented music ensemble to perform at the assembly as well as in the playground during recess which created a fantastic atmosphere for the day. After the assembly, a Chalk Art Competition was conducted and House Groups competed against each other for valuable house points. Their aim was to create a message that bullying will not be tolerated Forbes High School and demonstrate how to work together. The school also ran a Photo Competition where students, teachers and classes submitted pictures displaying Harmony and promoting Anti-Bullying and this was judged by staff and students at recess.

GONSKI REVIEW The Gonski Review was the most comprehensive investigation of the way our schools are funded in almost 40 years. Headed by respected businessman David Gonski, it found that too many children were being denied the education they needed due to a lack of resources.

What did the Gonski Review recommend? The Gonski review recommended that schools be funded according to the needs of their students and what was required to educate each one of them to a high standard. Each school would get a base level of Commonwealth and State funding, plus additional money or loadings to take into account the school’s size and location and the individual needs of students (such as whether they are from a disadvantaged background or have a disability).

What has Forbes High School Done with its Gonski funding? One of the benefits from the Gonski funding that Forbes High School has initiated is the appointment of a Head Teacher Wellbeing. This teacher will ultimately be responsible for leading the ongoing coordination and implementation of a range of wellbeing initiatives to support the wellbeing of all students. The teacher appointed to this position is Mr Justin Hoy. As this is a new position, the responsibilities will evolve over time. Some of the roles that Mr Hoy is undertaking at the present time are to oversee and coordinate the new Wellness Hub at the school, leading and supporting year advisors and other members of the wellbeing team including teachers and counsellors. The position also requires Mr Hoy to be an integral part of the leadership team at the school and assisting in the planning and implementation of the School Strategic Directions. This will all be in addition to his teaching responsibilities in the PE faculty.

The Gonski model of funding is vital to the ongoing support given to the students of Forbes High School and we ask that you support the continuation of this funding by liking the Gonski facebook page via the following link. https://www.facebook.com/igiveagonski/?fref=ts

RUGBY LEAGUE VICTORIES! The schools Rugby League Teams experienced success in the first rounds of their respective competitions recently. Forbes High took on neighbouring school, Parkes High, in the Buckley Shield and University Shield competitions. The Opens game was called off early due to severe weather conditions but not before they had secured a commanding 26-0 lead. Good luck for the next round.

WHAT IS LITERACY? Literacy is the ability to read and use written information and to write appropriately in a range of situations. It involves the integration of speaking, listening and critical thinking with reading and writing. Each subject has its own literacy demands, e.g. writing up an experiment in science is quite different to writing about an event in history. Subject teachers teach students how to read and write in their own subjects.

WHAT DOES LITERACY MEAN IN HIGH SCHOOL? Each subject has its own literacy demands, e.g. writing up an experiment in science is quite different to writing about an event in history. Subject teachers teach students how to read and write in their own subjects. Your son or daughter’s learning in all subject areas will be supported by: • talking and listening • reading • writing Term 1 at FHS students have been learning and revising basic skills and strategies such as how to skim and scan, selecting the main idea in a sentence or paragraph, tools to help organise information such as mind mapping, predicting and visualising. This is to help them improve their Literacy skills. Parents have a key role in supporting their children to further develop and practice literacy skills. There are many ways you can assist your child with Literacy at home. They do not rely on knowledge about the school subjects nor do they have to take lots of time. Over Terms 2 and 3 this year there will be hints and tips to help parents help their students to even further improve and reinforce the skills students are learning at school. It would be great if parents could watch out for these in our school newsletter and on our facebook page.

Ex-Student and Vice-Captain, Darcie Morrison has been selected in the Australian Universities Rugby 7’s Team which will travel to Swansea in the UK in July to compete in the World Universities Games. Well Done!!
