ST. JANE FRANCES DE CHANTAL CHURCH BETHESDA, MARYLAND
The Order of Worship
for the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
Year C
Entrance Antiphon: Rev 5:12; 1:6 How worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
to receive power and divinity, and wisdom and strength and honor.
To him belong glory and power for ever and ever.
Reading I: 2 Sm 5:1-3 The tribes of Israel
pledge allegiance to David because they believe
he is God’s anointed ruler.
Psalm Response: Ps 122 This “song of ascent,”
sung by pilgrims headed to Jerusalem, reflects the city’s role as
the center of Davidic rule and of worship. Christians often use this psalm
as an image of the New Jerusalem.
Reading II: Col 1:12-20 Paul borrows an early hymn text
to describe the One to whom we owe allegiance: the firstborn of all creation;
the head of the body, the Church; and the firstborn from the dead.
Gospel: Lk 23:35-43 Sometimes, what you see
isn’t what you get. Sometimes you have to see
with the eyes of faith.
Communion Antiphon: Ps 29:10-11 The Lord sits as King for ever. The Lord will bless his people
with peace.

Choral Texts and Translations
Choral Fanfare ..................................................................... H. Hamilton Smith
He shall rule from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth. All kings shall pay him homage. All nations shall serve him. He shall rule from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth. Alleluia. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away. And his kingdom shall not be destroyed. Alleluia.
(Psalm 71:18; Daniel 7:14))
The Lamb ................................................................................. John Taverner
Little lamb, who made thee Little lamb, I’ll tell thee; Dost thou know who made thee, Little lamb, I’ll tell thee: Gave thee life, and bid thee feed He is called by thy name, By the stream and o’er the mead; For He calls Himself a Lamb. Gave thee clothing of delight, He is meek, and He is mild, Softest clothing, woolly, bright; He became a little child. Gave thee such a tender voice, I a child, and thou a lamb, Making all the vales rejoice? We are called by His name. Little lamb, who made thee? Little lamb, God bless thee! Dost thou know who made thee? Little lamb, God bless thee!
(William Blake, 1757 – 1827)

Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence ............................................... Gustav Holst
Let all mortal flesh keep silence, King of Kings, yet born of Mary, And with fear and trembling stand; As of old on earth He stood, Ponder nothing earthly minded, Lord of Lords, in human vesture, For with blessing in His hand, In the body and the blood; Christ our God to earth descendeth He will give to all the faithful Our full homage to demand. His own self for heavenly food.
Rank on rank the host of heaven At His feet the six winged seraph, Spreads its vanguard on the way, Cherubim with sleepless eye, As the Light of Light descendeth Veil their faces to the presence, From the realms of endless day, As with ceaseless voice they cry: That the powers of hell may vanish Alleluia, Alleluia As the darkness clears away. Alleluia, Lord Most High!
(from the Offertory of the Liturgy of St James; Gerard Moultrie, 1829 – 1885, para.)

There is a chart on the digital board listing the charities, their mission, and which color/shape tag goes with each charity. Suggestion: After you remove a gift tag, take a photo of the gift number/request so you will have a copy on your cell phone anytime you need it. Please return the new gift in a gift bag with the tag attached, during Masses the weekends of December 7/8, or December 14/15. Please note that gifts should not be left in the church during the week and can no longer be stored in the parish office due to space limits. Giving Tree questions:

Eighth Grade on Retreat The eighth grade students traveled to Camp Maria in Leonardtown, Maryaldn, for their annual class retreat. Throughout the two-day retreat, students played and prayed together. They ate s'mores over the campfire, reflected on their time at De Chantal, and focused on forming closer relationships with peers, faculty, and God. Parent Lecture Series Dr. Bonnie Aucker, Psy. D. addressed the school community on the topic: Helping Our Worried Children: A Cognitive-Behavioral Approach to Helping Children Handle Stress and Anxiety. Dr. Zucker is a licensed psychologist with a background and expertise in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Using a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) approach, Dr. Zucker has helped hundreds of children, teens, and adults become anxiety-free by teaching them coping skills, methods for challenging their faulty thinking, and how to systematically face their fears. This fantastic speaker gave strategies for parents to help their children with stress as well as warning signs that a child may need professional help.

“’Save yourself’ (Lk 23:35,37,39). The people tempt Jesus, just as the devil did at the beginning of the Gospel (cf. Lk 4:1-13), to give up reigning as God wills, and instead to reign according to the world’s ways. Claim triumph for yourself with your power, with your glory, with your victory. When confronted with this attack on his very way of being, Jesus does not speak, he does not react. He does not defend himself, he does not try to convince them, he does not mount a defence of his kingship. He continues rather to love; he forgives, he lives this moment of trial according to the Father’s will, certain that love will bear fruit.”

Saint Peter’s Square.
