USED CLOTHING DROP-OFF SHED

St. Jane de Chantal Parish has contracted with a new vendor to provide a used clothing drop-off shed. Items accepted: all clothing, sneakers, belts, purses, blankets,

sheets, pillowcases, drapes, and stuffed toys. Help keep your donation clean and dry by placing items in plastic bags. Items not accepted: rags, fabric scraps, toys, and household goods; understand that these items are expensive to dispose of. The accepted items will not be cut up or shredded, and will benefit people in the U.S. and in third-world countries. Our parish will receive a stipend for the accepted items, which will be used to benefit the poor in our community.

MUSIC & LITURGY NOTES

The Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office or the Work of God (Opus Dei), is the daily prayer of the Church, marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer. The Hours are a meditative dialogue on the mystery of Christ, using scripture and prayer. At times the dialogue is between the Church or individual soul and God; at times it is a dialogue among the members of the Church; and at times it is even between the Church and the world. The dialogue is always held, however, in the presence of God and using the words and wisdom of God. Each of the five canonical Hours (Office of Readings, Morning Prayer, Daytime Prayer, Evening Prayer, Night Prayer) includes selections from the Psalms that culminate in a scriptural proclamation.

At Saint Jane’s, we pray together the Office of Morning Prayer before the 8:00 am daily Mass. Morning Prayer includes a Gospel canticle, the Canticle of Zechariah from Luke 1:68-79. The Gospel canticle acts as a kind of meditative extension of the scriptural proclamation in light of the Christ event. Morning Prayer also includes intercessions that flow from the scriptural proclamation just as the Psalms prepare for it. In the Hours, the Universal Call to Holiness of the baptized is exercised, and this sacrifice of praise is thus connected to the sacrifice of the Eucharist, in preparation for the Mass.

As is clear from many of the elements that make it up, Morning Prayer is intended and arranged to sanctify the morning. St. Basil the Great gives an excellent description of this character in these words: "It is said in the morning in order that the first stirrings of our mind and will may be consecrated to God and that we may take nothing in hand until we have been gladdened by the thought of God, as it is written: 'I was mindful of God and was glad' (Ps 77:4 [Jerome's translation from Hebrew]), or set our bodies to any task before we do what has been said: 'I will pray to you, Lord, you will hear my voice in the morning; I will stand before you in the morning and gaze on you' (Ps 5:4-5)." Celebrated as it is as the light of a new day is dawning, this hour also recalls the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, the true light enlightening all people (see Jn 1:9) and "the sun of justice" (Mal 4:2), "rising from on high" (Lk 1:78). Hence, we can well understand the advice of St. Cyprian: "There should be prayer in the morning so that the resurrection of the Lord may thus be celebrated."

All are welcome to participate in our celebration of Morning Prayer. It takes about 15 minutes (beginning at 7:45 am) and is prayed before the image of the Blessed Mother in the Children’s Room. The Liturgy of the Hours used to be reserved exclusively for clergy, but the Vatican II reforms have allowed all the faithful to participate. It offers a valuable enhancement to one’s prayer life.

2016 NATIONAL PRAYER VIGIL FOR LIFE

Join pilgrims from around the country for the National Prayer Vigil for Life at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Thursday, January 21. The opening Mass will be celebrated at 6:00 pm in the Great Upper Church. Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Chairman, USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities, will be the principal celebrant and homilist. This is the largest annual Shrine event with youthful crowds in excess of 8,000. Following Mass, there will be the national Rosary for Life, confessions, holy hours and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament throughout the night until the closing Mass at 7:30 am Thursday morning. 2016 ADULT AND FAMILY RALLY & MASS FOR LIFE Once again, the Archdiocese of Washington and the Association of Ecclesial Movements and the New Communities will sponsor the Adult and Family Rally and Mass for Life on the morning of the National March for Life on Friday, January 22. All parishioners of the Archdiocese of Washington are invited to attend this event, which will be held at St. Matthew's Cathedral (1725 Rhode Island Ave. NW). The Rally kicks off at 9:00 am and features keynote speaker Mark Pickup. Mass begins at 10:00 am and will be celebrated by Bishop Mario Dorsonville, with Fr. Dan Leary as homilist.
