Mr Damien Carlton PRINCIPAL From the Principal T 02 9548 4000 www.boscocollege.nsw.edu.au E [email protected] NEWSLETTER 1 JUNE 2018 | VOLUME 42 NO. 16 TERM 2 - WEEK 5 - 2018 Staff Development Day: Earlier this week, staff from 12 Catholic schools joined our College for a professional development seminar led by members of NESA (National Educational Standards Authority). The focus of the day was to assist teachers to understand what constitutes effective, developmentally appropriate assessment for students and how to differentiate and adjust assessment processes and tasks to meet the physical, social and intellectual development needs of a student in their own classrooms. Teachers were given time to develop effective assessment tasks and integrate them into well-designed teaching programs. It was very engaging and successful, particularly with the input from other schools. I thank Mrs Rhonda Thompson (Leader of Learning and Teaching) for the design and organisation of the day. Semester 1 Exams: Years 9 & 10 began their exams this week. These are significant tests and it is expected that all students study and prepare for the exams thoroughly. Exam regulations and issues concerning illness and misadventure have been given to the students. The correct exam procedures are also outlined on page 3 of this newsletter. Uniform reminder: Recently, there have been a large number of unclaimed items of the College and sports uniform turn up to the front office. Can I remind all students and parents about the clear expectations about wearing the correct College attire at all times. Of note is the College jumper. It is a secondary item to be worn under the blazer, not instead of it. Equally, the jumper is not part of the sports uniform. Additionally, it is highly advisable that student names are placed on all articles of uniform. This stops confusion of ownership claims and allows the speedy return of misplaced items. Thank you for your support on this matter. Farewells: Today we farewelled Mrs Sarah Culligan (Art) and Mr John Boultwood (Maths) from Bosco. Sarah is moving her family to Albury and taking up a position as an Art teacher at Trinity Anglican College, Albury. John leaves us after thankfully filling in a gap in the maths department over the past 5 weeks. We wish them well in their future ventures. The Feast of the Visitation Yesterday, Thursday 31 May we celebrated the Feast of the Visitation, the day on which the Blessed Virgin Mary, having been told at the Annunciation by the angel Gabriel that she had been chosen to bear the Son of God, went to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who herself was pregnant with John the Baptist. The scene is beautiful: as Mary greets her cousin, the baby leaps in Elizabeth’s womb, and Elizabeth cries out in the words that make up the second sentence of the Hail Mary: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” Mary, overflowing with joy herself, responds with the Magnificat, a wondrous canticle (a biblical hymn) extolling the greatness of God and thanking Him for the favour He has shown her. This is a blessed moment now as it was when it occurred. It emphasises the notion of waiting ... waiting for God to bestow great love and peace upon the world. Certainly, something that our current world needs. So at this time we hope and pray for peace in our troubled world.

7 TERM 2 - WEEK 5 GAUDIUM ET SPES | JOY & HOPE | A school that prepares for life

Year 12 Geography Fieldwork in Pyrmont

The Year 12 Geographers, accompanied by Mrs Babic and Mrs Davies, undertook fieldwork in Pyrmont on Thursday 24 May. This excursion was an opportunity for Babographers (Mrs Babic’s Geography Students) to put our classroom learning into action as we learnt about the significant impact of urban decay and consequently urban renewal on the suburb 2 km West of Sydney, Pyrmont.

Thirty-two Year 12 Geography students ventured to Pyrmont by train where we gathered in front of the National Maritime Museum where we met Marina and Patricia who were to be our guides for the day. As we grouped, a quick check of SnapMaps revealed that a fellow Babographer had gotten the later train! We were given a three minute ‘morning tea’ break before being ushered out onto the streets of Pyrmont where we met our lost companion.

The next two and half, or three hours for those of us fortunate enough to be with Marina, who seemed to know anything and everything about the area were spent walking around Pyrmont observing the urban dynamics taking place. We learnt that through economic restructuring the landscape of Pyrmont has changed from its blue collar sugar refinery, tannery (leather) and wool factories to terrace houses and other adaptive reuse purposes. For example, the 1881 bank has kept its facade and through the process of adaptive reuse, has become a cosmetic surgery. Further, we were immersed into the community of Pyrmont amongst its busy, trendy streets and the spatially excluded 15 million dollar terrace apartments that overlooked the Harbour to become more aware of the urban dynamics that surround us each day.

We then were lucky enough to be able to buy some nice lunch ranging from sushi, kebabs, maccas and fresh sandwiches before it was a mad dash and hike uphill to the train station to go home. A special thank you to Mrs Babic and Mrs Davies who took time out of their busy schedules to take us on this great learning experience that we will forever remember; we really appreciate it!

If none of that made sense, in summary it was a great day and the information both groups learnt will assist in understanding how the urban dynamics of an area influence its social demographics and provide us with illustrative examples for our upcoming Trial and HSC exams.

9 TERM 2 - WEEK 5 GAUDIUM ET SPES | JOY & HOPE | A school that prepares for life

How powerful is a book cover in attracting you to read a book?

The creative library team is encouraging students to fall in love with reading by having a blind date with a book. Novels of varying genres have been wrapped to disguise the contents in an attempt to have students look beyond their normal choice of reading. Students have been selecting their ‘date’, spent time reading their novel and writing a brief review. We are hoping that this activity will be a bit of fun for most students and, hopefully, further engender an interest in reading.

LIBRARY NEWS

The Library is playing matchmaker!

Going out on a blind date is a lot like opening up a new book –

you never know what kind of experience you’re going to have.

During the next 4 weeks, select your “date” from the display of specially wrapped books, check it out at the Circulation Desk,

take it home and then unwrap it.

Inside each book is a “rate your date” slip. Each slip you return to the Library will be entered into a raffle drawn at the end of June.

Hopefully, it’s love at first site!

Students in Newman classes are to choose three of the above words to add to the following words:• infer• empathy

Any students with an orange grid card that has been filled with initials by teachers at the end of the focus week will advance to a blue grid card. Congratulations to William Hoy (Savio 4) who is now on a blue card.

10 TERM 2 - WEEK 5 GAUDIUM ET SPES | JOY & HOPE | A school that prepares for life

Year 10 Commerce visits the Downing Centre Courts | Mrs Joanne Cutcliffe

On a recent excursion to the city, Year 10 Commerce visited the Downing Centre Courts and the Justice and Police Museum. The students have been studying ‘Law and Society’ and ‘Law in Action’.

In the Downing Centre, the students were able to move freely between courtrooms and view District and Local Court matters at various stages of proceedings including drug and assault cases, closing statements and sentencing hearings.

After a lunch at Circular Quay, students were guided through the historic Justice and Police Museum. They saw exhibits of Sydney’s criminal history and put their forensic skills to the test solving the 1934 Australian ‘Pyjama Girl Mystery’. Students also participated in a mock ‘drink driving’ trial taking roles of prosecutor, defence lawyer, accused and court officer, giving them a sense of the formality and operation of trials.

It was a great day and the class were a credit to the College with their interest, maturity and behaviour.

The College would like to congratulate Ireland Keep of Year 11, who has just returned from Melbourne competing in her first Australian Gymnastics Championships. Ireland did very well representing NSW Senior Level 10 Women's Artistic Gymnastics. During a very tough day 1 she qualified to the finals day 2. Out of the 18 level 10 gymnasts NSW sent down, only 10 qualified for day 2, so this is an amazing achievement for Ireland. She ended up being ranked within the top 30 in Australia in her level. The College would like to acknowledge Ireland's ability to commit to an extensive training schedule whilst balancing her Year 11 school work. We are very proud of you and continue to wish you every success in the future!

The young are the delight of both our families, and our

communities, and have a very important place in our parish. We celebrate their faith through their sacramental journey;

they are the life and focus of our parish schools; their energies and initiatives play a vital role in many of our parish

activities and ministries.

Sadly however, we know that the innocence of the young has not always been treasured and protected in our communities.

The Royal Commission has taught us many lessons, the most fundamental being that we must ensure that this never happens

again and we need to do all we can to find ways to prevent it.
