Sixteen flag officers and nearly 100staff officers representing 13 NATOnations gathered in mid-February at theheadquarters of Admiral Robert L. Den­nison, USN, Supreme Allied Com­mander Atlantic, to attend a three dayanti-submarine warfare symposium. In­cluded was an anti-submarine briefingand demonstration at sea conducted byRear-Admiral K L. Dyer, RCN, Com­mander Canadian Atlantic Sub-Area ofNATO.

The ASW symposium was sponsoredby Admiral Dennison to assess thepresent and future submarine threat toNorth Atlantic sea lanes. Means ofexpanding NATO's ASW capabilitieswere also discussed. It was the fourthsymposium to be held.

The demonstration conducted by Ad­miral Dyer was in 'three parts. Firstwas a demonstration of current ASWtechniques in detecting, localizing andtracking by shore based aircraft andby RCN ships and carrier borne aircraft;next was a demonstration··of present daylive ASW weapons, and finally defencetechniques against attack by submarinesarmed with ballistic missiles wereshown.

Involved were four Argus' aircraftfrom 405 Maritime Air Command at

Greenwood, N.S., five ships from theFifth Canadian Escort Squadron, andHMCS Bonaventure with VS-880'sTrackers and HS-50's anti-submarinehelicopters embarked. The destroyerescorts were the Columbia, Chaudiere,Restigouche, Kootenay, and Terra Nova.Enemy forces were represented by HMSAurochs and Auriga, of the RN's SixthSubmarine Squadron from Halifax.

In addition to the Supreme AlliedCommander, Europe, the Commander­in-Chief Channel, and all major sub­ordinate NATO commands in the Atlan­tic, members of Saclant's ASW Researchcentre at La Spezia, Italy, and membersfrom the NATO Standing Group werealso represented.

Nootka 'Ham'Relays SOS

Help for a yacht in distress 2,000miles away in the West Indies was pro­vided in mid-February through theefforts of a Toronto amateur radio' op­erator and another "ham" in a Canadiandestroyer escort at Puerto Rico.

The story, as reported by HMCSNootka, was that the Belgian yacht Janran aground south of Dominica onFebruary 13. Distress signals in Spanishwere picked up by ham radio stationVE3DOK, Toronto. which then called in

English to any station in the PuertoRico area.

Ham radio station VEONA in theNootka, operated by CPO K. J. (Moe)Lake, an electronic technician, inter­cepted the call and alerted the U.S.Coast Guard in San Juan.

USS Newport News (cruiser) wasdiverted to stand by the Jan. The lastreport received by the Nootka was thatthe Jan was out of danger and wouldrefloat herself.

The Nootka, .senior ship, and sisterships Haida and Huron, were in SanJuan to paint ship following bombard­ment exercises on the U.S. Navy'sCalebra range further away on theCaribbean island.

Winter ExerciseEnds March 17

Wintex 61, a series of fleet exercisesinvolving 26 ships, three air squadrons,and 5,000 officers and men of the RoyalCanadian Navy's Atlantic Command,plus Maritime aircraft of the RCAF,ended March 17.

Commodore James Plomer, SeniorCanadian Officer Afloat, Atlantic, whocommanded the fleet, has termed theresults, "never better".

training", Commodore Plomer said."Further, the Canadian sailor has provedhis capacity for endurance, cheerful­ness and hard work".

The exercises were conducted in Ber­muda waters and included the aircraftcarrier Bonaventure, 11 destroyer es­corts, seven frigates, three minesweepers,plus supporting naval and auxiliaryunits. The submarine forces includedtwo British boats from the Halifaxstation and the United States submarineA 1llbcrjac1c. Other RCN ships of theAtlantic Command took part while"working up" following refit.

Ships, anti-submarine "Tracker" air­craft, helicopters and the submarinesran the gamut of operational drills afterthe first units came to Bermuda inJanuary. The gradual build-up of the

'Wintex 61 fleet has culminated in twooperations off the islands. One, held atthe end of February, was a problemwhich involved a convoy and a sup­porting hunter-killer group, opposed byfrequently-attacking aircraft and twosubmarines, HMS Auriga and USSA mberjac1c.

The second, March 2 and 3, includedtrials of recently evolved screeningtactics. The Aurochs was the only sub­marine in the second.

For a good portion of the time, direc­tion of RCN activities in the area wasexercised by Captain R. W. Murdoch,Commander of the Third Canadian

Escort Squadron, with headquarters inthe Cape Scott. The Cape Scott not onlycarried out her own maintenance, buthandled 625 work orders from otherships, expending approximately 4,100man hours of labour. Her logistic rolefor the fleet was considerably enlargedthis year and she acted as agent for thefuel and fresh provisions required bythe ships.

The forces carried out a major exer­cise en route to Halifax where Wintex61 concluded.

to the rank of Rear-Admiral on takingup his new appointment. CommodoreBrock has served as Assistant Chief ofthe Naval Staff (Air and Warfare) atNaval Headquarters since July 1958.

Captain Robert P. Welland, Directorof Naval Operational Requirementssince August 1960, will be promoted tothe rank of Commodore and will suc­ceed Commodore Brock.

The total fire loss for the 16 com­peting naval establishments in 1960amounted to only $7,771, a figure whichLt.-Cdr. Duval took as a clear indica­tion of the value of the contest in fireprevention.

The average yearly fire loss for allNational Defence establiShments for theten years 1950 to 1959 in<,:lusive wasapproximately 2~ million dollars. The1960 fire loss was oilly $435,314 or about17 percent of the average.

Altogether 95 DND' establishmentsentered the contest in 1960, with RCAFStation Uplands being declared theGrand Award Winner.

RCN establishments, HMCS Cornwallisfirst in the medium category and theRCN Magazine, Rocky Point, B.C., firstamong establishments with under 1,500personnel.

Program CutsLosses from Fire

The fire prevention program of theCanadian Armed Forces is showing ex­cellent results and the fire loss for allNational De,fence establishments in 1960was by far the lowest on record.

This was reported by Lt.-Cdr. N. A.Duval, Director of Fire Fighting for theHCN, at the headquarters ceremonyduring which Hon. Douglas S. Harkness,Minister of National Defence, presentedthe major awards in the 1960 NFPA fireprevention contest.

The major naval winner was HMCDockyard, Esquimalt. The award, aframed certificate from the National FireProtection Association, an internationalorganization with headquarters inBoston, was accepted from Mr. Harknessby Vice-Admiral H. S. Hayner, Chiefof the Naval Staff.

At the request of The Daily Standard-Freeholder,published in Cornwall, Ontario, Hon. Douglas S. Hark­ness, Minister of National Defence, last Januaryprepared a state7nent sum1ll,ari,zing current defencepolicies.

In his article, Mr. Harkness expressed the opin­ion that Hfor the immediate future the prospects ofcontinued peace remain good providing an effectivedeterrent is maintained. This involves not only mili­tary strength bU{'talso the intelligent use of econornic,technical and political guidance to the underdevelopedcountries of the world."

I T WAS ONLY last October that Itook over the responsibilities of

Minister of National Defence and I ap­preciate that it will be some time beforeI am fully conversant with the manyintricacies and problems that exist in adepartment as complex as defence.

From the outset I realized that oneof the essentials io become acquaintedwith defence problems was to visit asmany establishments as possible. Thanks,to the efficency of the RCAF TransportCommand, already I have been twiceto Europe and twice to the UnitedStates. On these visits I have had aquick look at our Brigade Group andthe Air Division in Europe; at NorthAmerican Air Defence Command Head­quarters in Colorado and at StrategicAir Command Headquarters in Ne­braska. The trips have provided mewith the opportunity of having dis­cussions with defence ministers of theUnited Kingdom, France, Germany,and the U.S.

The clear aim of Canada's govern­ment is to preserve peace and to strivetowards an effective reduction in in­ternational tensions leading, we hope,to eventual common agreement on dis­armament. That is the ultimate goal,but as long as the threat of aggressionexists-and recent events at the UnitedNations and elsewhere have tended todecrease rather than enh an.ce the pos­sibility of international agreement-myresponsibility as Minister is to ensurethat our defence effort i$ as efficientand effective as possible in maintain­ing the security of Canada. We cannotmaintain that security I. unilaterally.Geography and the development of newweapons and their delivery clearly in­dicate this fact.

Within the near future there are someserious and far~reaching decisions

which will have to be made both at theUN and by NATO. If a disarmamentagreement is reached this will have pro­found effects on defence policy.

There are some Canadians today whoadvocate neutralism but in my viewsuch a policy would not ensure thecountry's security. One has only to lookat the map of the world to realize thatwe would inevitably be involved in any\vorld conflict If we could provide acomplete defence on our own-and noone country can afford such a defenceeven if it were possible-there might besome validity to such a policy, butwithout such a defence, neutralism, ashistory has proved, is no safeguard forsurvival.

Suggestions that by adopting a policyof nationalism-in particular, the re­commendations that \ve should with­draw from our present commitments inNorth American Air Defence and theNorth Atlantic Treaty Organization­we could act as a buffer zone betweenRussia and the United States do notmerit consideration unless we are in aposition to ensure, by force if necessary,that our security is respected. Canadaon its own can not provide adequateforces to bring this about.

Despite the vast expenditures whichhave been made in the past in an effortto perfect an adequate defence, the factis that as of today and for the imme­diate future, physical methods have notbeen devised that could directly andcompletely counter an attack either onthis continent or anywhere else in theworld.

While defensive weapons can domuch to deny complete success to a\vQuld-be aggressor, the devastatingpower of even a limited number of nu­clear weapons reaching their target

means that now more than ever beforewe must prevent the outbreak of war.

It is the belief of all the nations ofthe West that this objective can bestbe reached through collective arrange­ments within NATO and the UN whichconstitute an effective deterrent to ag­gression and thus minimize the possi­bility of war.

Just as 1960 was closing I returnedfrom my first meeting of the NorthAtlantic Council in Paris and I ampleased to report that Canada hasplayed an important part in the steadyprogress and build-up of the North At­lantic forces.

The forces committed to NATO nowwork as a team under unified commandan-d-with.-u-nif-er-m--s-t-a-n-d-a-r-di-red-ba-t-t-l-e'--­procedure. These are new achievementsin the long history of man's efforts tocombine together for peaceful purposes.Forces of NATO did not exist 10 yearsago but today they are strong enoughto make an aggressor hesitate beforelaunching an attack.

In view of the heavy cost of modernarmament there is art inherent advan­tage in alliances such as NATO in thatthe necessary combination of forces canbe provided along the most economicallines. Thus, countries such as Canadaare not required to strive for completeand balanced forces but rather eachpartner may concentrate on the pro­vision of those elements which con-

. stitute its particular needs and whichcan be most effectively built up andmaintained.

Joining such organizations as NATOand the UN and ·contributing to thedefence of North America has ledCanada to undertake certain milit?rycommitments - commitments made atthe request of the two organizations re­ferred to.

The prevention of war by creatingthe greatest possible deterrent to waris the basic NATO defence concept.NATO forces in combination withspecialized U.S. and U.K. long-rangeretaliatory forces are designed to main­tain this objective.

The retaliatory forces of the West,the long-range missiles and aircraft ofStrategic Air Command, are in the mainbased on this continent. If the deterrentis successful,' necessary arrangementsmust be made that in the event of anattack these retaliatory forces can belaunched against designated targetsbefore they thems,elves are destroyed.

We hav.e, therefore, the Early Warn­ing System - the DEW, Mid-Canadaand Pinetree Lines-against attack bymanned bomber, and the Ballistic Mis­sile Early Warning System BMEWscoming into operation to give warningagainst the long-range missile. Air De­f~nce forces consisting of aircraft andsurface-to-air missiles are also main-.tained against the bomber threat.

We don't know if Russia has sufficientquantities of long-range missiles ofenough accuracy to dispense with theuse of manned bombers. On the con­trary, it is a fact that they have havea considerable number of said aircraftin operation and should an attack bedecided upon it must be presumed thatthese aircraft would be used. This isthe reason for the decision to improveour air defence by the acquisition ofthe Bomarc surface-to-ail' missile, newheavy radars and the SAGE (Semi­Automatic Ground Environment) con­trol system . . .

I am of the opinion that for theimmediate future the prospects of con­tinued peace remain good providing aneffective deterrent is maintained. Thisinvolves not only military strength butalso the intelligent use of economic,technical and political guidance to theunderdeveloped countries of the world.

Taking a long-range view, however,peace can only be maintained by re­moving the causes of war and to thatend we look to effective leadership inthe fields of foreign aflairs leading tothe lessening of international tensionsand to the ultimate goal of permanentdisarmament.

be presumed that her claim will not go unchallenged.When the Columbia commissioned on November

7, 1959, she carried two standard 27-foot gray, drabmotor cutters. Within a short time an amazing trans­formation took place. The cutters now have gleamingmahogany decks, seats and stern gratings, white can­opies, pleasantly-coloured interiors and shining brightwork.

The man responsible for the boats as well as thesmart appearance and efficiency of their crews is Ldg.Sea. George Paden, a boatswain.

Ldg. Sea. Paden, originally from Gravenhurst,Ont., joined the RCNVR in June 1939. During the

war, he served in HMCS St. Laurent, motor gunboatsand HMCS Ribble.

While serving in the first "Sally" he was carriedoverboard in the North Atlantic during a gale andwas recovered some 30 minutes later. He also par­ticipated in the rescue of 860 prisoners of war whosurvived the sinking of the Arandora Star in July1940. He took his release in July 1945, having by thattime become a Torpedo Coxswain.

In 1956, Ldg. Sea. Paden joined the RCN(R) asa PIQM3 and transferred to the RCN in January 1957as an LSQM2. Since then he has served in HMCSChaleur and joined the Columbia on commissiong.Ldg. Sea. Paden is married and has four children.He now makes his home in Shannon Park. (HS-62936)

Cdr. King was born in Halifax andentered the RCN as a cadet in October1942.

Since the Second World War he hasserved in the cruiser, Ontario, the frigateLa Hulloise, the destroyer escorts Algon­quin, and Micmac and the aircraftcarrier Bonaventure.

In January 1958 he was appointedhydrographer at Naval Headquarters,

ottawa, and in April 1960 took commandof the frigate Outremont.

of modern warfare had their begin­nings in the dim, far past, There is aparallel with chemical warfare in thestory of the destrliction of Sodom andGomorrha by brimstone and fire, andbiological warfare is most vividly por­trayed in the account of the sevenplagues of Egypt.

Only one new hazard has been intro­duced by the advent of the nuclear age.That single new hazard is nuclear radia­tion. Heat, blast, shock - the othereffects of nuclear weapons-have beenwith us since man first burned his fingeror fled from 'volcanic eruptions.

Let us go back to antiquity and findout what effects heat, blast and shockhave ha'd on the. evolution of seapower.

Our first maritime ancestor, whobraved the waters clinging to a log, soonrecognized the· need .for buoyancy inhis maritime pursuits. Sitting on thefloating log in an effort to remain dry,he probably received his first soggylesson in stability when his added top­weight rolled him under. As he bravedgreater stretches of water, fishing ortrading, the size of his vessel grew froma hollow log to something more sub­stantial.

The vessel's increased endurance ledto larger carrying capacities and higherliving standards; but with its increasedefficiency went increased complications.The elements, faulty navigation, or hisenemies, all had a nasty habit of re­ducing his reserve buoyancy andstability to zero. A hole rammed in hisship's hull was sufficient' to neutralizehis offensive power.

The history of marine weapons, there­fore, from the ram, through cannon,gunnery systems, torpedoes, bombs andnow nuclear weapons, is merely theevolution of still more sophisticatedmethods of reducing us to the old, log­clinging status of our early ancestors.

Fire has been an ever-present hazardin ships since the day man decided tocook a meal on board. Centuries beforeChrist the Greeks attempted to set fireto enemy ships with reflected and con­centr.ated sun's rays. They also firedburning arrows into the hulls of enemyvessels.

Flaming arrows gave way to the red­hot cannon balls and incendiaries whichwere important weapons of the greatwooden fleets of the 18th and 19thcenturies. Preparations for the Battle

This fire hazard is with us today.We must still reckon with the enemy butour increased electrical loads, inflam­mable liquids, fuel and ammunitionprovide a continuous fire hazard whichcannot be ignored in peace or war.

The history of chemical warfare is along one. The Spartans used gas againstthe defenders at the siege of Platrea in426 BC. Suffocating and incendiary mix­tures were used by the Greeks 100 yearslater to discourage besiegers attackingthe walls under the protection of a"tortoise". The most famous ancient warchemical was "Greek Fire", first pro­duced about 674 AD. Its compositionwas so well guarded that it is unknown

today. It ignited on contact with water,had an incendiary effect and gave offchoking gases. It was discharged fromtubes in the bows of ships.

(Although the ancients (like themoderns) tried to guard their militarysecrets, the chemicals available in thosetimes are known and it is assumed thatthe "Greek fire" of the 7th Century wassimply a mixture of sulphur, naphthaand quicklime. This was ejected from

And so, in the light of history, letus examine matters as. they appeartoday. Nuclear weapons, although new,present us with hazards which can bemet by protective measures employed indefence against conventional and chemi­cal weapons. The need to protect againstblast and heat is not new. Closing Shipsdowu for protection' against. gas, as. todayfor fallout, was an expedient adopted inthe First World War. As in the case ofchemicals, we require instruments toassist in detection of harmful radiation.

The beginnings of' a schoolwere set up in Halifax and a trainingcentre in Esquimalt in 1950. The needfor universal training inNBen. was soonevident. Facilities have been. expandedon both coasts .to provide training andt9 exercise ships" NBCD teams andorganizations in. all phases. "of thisre­sponsibility in ships.

A BRIEF ACCOUNT of· the sinkingof the U-877 on December 27,

1944, by the Castle class corvette St.Thon~as and the subsequent friendshipbetween the first lieutenants of the twovessels appeared in the August 1960issue of The Crowsnest.

The story told how Lt.-Cdr. StanislasDery, RCN (R) (Ret), former firstlieutenant of the St. Thorn-as, came topossess German naval officer's sword.It was given last summer by Dr. PeterI-Ieisig, former first lieutenant of theU-boat, to Mrs. Dery when she visitedthe Heisigs in Germany. Dr. Heisighad been a prisoner-of-war on boardthe St. Thornas and it was there hisacquaintance with the 81. Johns, Quebec,lawyer began.

Now, from Dr. D. W. Clarke, of theCharles H. Best Institute, University ofToronto, come some embellishments ofthe story. He was at the scene of theU-boat's destruction as staff radar offi­cer to the senior officer of C-3 mid­ocean escort group. He was an ElectricalLieutenant, RCNVR, and, because there\vasn't room for him in the senior ship,he was sailing in the St. Thomas.

His story may not be identical withthe one told when the medals werehanded out, but here it is:

C-3 Group, to which the St. Thomasbelonged. Group Radar Officers werethe Johnny-come-latelies attached tothe staff of the senior naval officer ofthe convoy. Our senior officer was Cdr.C. A. King, RCNR, who earlier in thewar had commanded the Oakville whenshe had snagged a sub in the Caribbeanwaters. In common with other seniorofficers,' he was loaded down with hisstaff gunnery officer, staff signal officer,staff asdic officer, and once he even hada staff electrical officer. Finally, as if thesenior officer didn't have enough toworry about, he was given custody ofa staff radar officer.

Most of the staff, or group, radar offi­cers were fairly recent graduates of thespecialized schools which introducedthem into this black art. They werealso "green-stripers", and so on twocounts were quite junior to the ratherknowledgeable and experienced typeswho made up the rest of the staff. Wewere important figures at the convoyconferences which preceded each con­voy sailing, however. Here met the

which became home to me. A mattressspread on the former long desk, a steelclothes locker, and a drop-leaf deskwhich barred ingress or exit when itwas in position-who could ask formore?

I have suggested that the residencewas more or less permanent, and withreason. The infant radar was nothingif not temperamental and, if one of thesets on the escorts became balky beyondthe capacity of the rating who motheredit to handle, the group radar officer wassupposed to transfer to the ship whichhad the ailing set, and to administer, asit were, paternal discipline. It was gen­erally agreed amongst GROs that ahard kick in the region of the modula­tor cured most ills.

Since transfer and return were sub­ject both to the whims of the weatherand the tactical situation, one alwaystook along a certain amount of personalgear, as \vell as the tools of the trade.You never knew how long you wouldstay. What with one thing and another,the result was that your belongingssoon became scattered over most of theships in the group, and you sometimesfound that your only remaining cleanshirt was in a ship which was detachedto proceed to Halifax for reflt.

But to return to U-877. On a "vetDecember day in 1944 we pulled out of

I understand that there mayhave been some personality difficultiesin the latter ship-what ship doesn'thave them?-and who was to blame Idon't know. At any rate, the ne\v A/Srating proved to have excellent pitchdiscrimination - a very valuable assetfor picking up Doppler effects frommoving objects such as submarines. Onthe day that we met the U-877, it istrue that, as the story in The Crowsneststated, the Edmunston did pick up thesub, but very shortly thereafter classi­fied it as "non-sub". The St. Thoma$then came across the same echo andattacked the object, which subsequentlyproved to be the submarine. After theaction was all over, the Edmunston sig­nalled her congratulations, to whichour captain dryly replied: "Thanks.Credit largely due to your late HSD."

The captain, incidentally, was' a manwho was very economical in his habitsand, in those days when depth chargeswere liberally tossed about, it was con­sidered only proper that he should be

the one to get a sub with only twosalvoes, involving a total of only sixcharges.

The nature of the destruction of thesub must bring up another correction.The papers reported that it 'was sunkwith "deadly accurate gunfire". Thoughwe fired everything in the ready-uselocker, and the Seaclifje was coming upfast, also shooting, it seems, from thestories of the survivors that not a darnthing hit the sub. Perhaps 1 shouldtake some of the blame here. Withone of our first shots, the radar shookitself into inactivity again, so thatranges could not be supplied to thegunnery officer. Later in the action, wedid get it working.

When the sub surfaced nearby, 1remember looking at the distinctive sil­houette of the conning tower, and think­ing, "Why, that's a German submarine."As we came upon the survivors '(and 1would be willing to bet that this wasthe only sub/' sunk by depth charges,

from which all the crew were rescued)I felt that I should do something moremartial, and with the permission of thebridge, I grabbed the Bren gun storedthere, took a couple of magazines ofammunition, and clattered down to themain deck where 1 set up the gun,pointing it in the general direction ofthe rafts and floats. After a while itslowly dawned on me that a gun won'tfire unless it is cocked and that did posea problem, till I remembered a demon­stration I had witnessed a few yearspreviously, as an unwilling member ofthe Auxiliary Battalion of the COTe atUniversity. A Bren gun had beenshown, and 1 remembered there was alittle handle that you flipped out, andpulled back, and then you were all set.Fortunately, the gun was not needed,and it somehow found its way back tothe bridge, without causing casualties oneither side.

We picked up many of the crew, andthe SeacLifje picked up the rest. Theofficers were lodged in one of the cabins,and ate their mealS in the wardroomafter we had finished. 1 well rememberobserving the U-boat captain taking

some butter for his bread. 1 supposehe was accustomed to butter shortages,and assumed we were, too, for hecourteously sliced from the bar of but­ter on the table the thinnest slice ofbutter 1 have ever seen anyone manage.

There was, nevertheless, a certainamount of fraternization, and 1 thinkthe last chess game 1 played (I neverdid play much) was played with aLieut. Mildenstein. He won the gamehandily. Perhaps naval life was notconducive to my learning processes forgames, for subsequently, some of mypatient shipmates undertook to teachme bridge. They did their part but 1could not have been an apt pupil, fora couple of years later, after the warhad ended, and 1 found myself doinggraduate work in the United States, 1was perslladed into a bridge game withthree people who loved the game. Onone of the hands, 1 went down aboutfive tricks. Subesquent consideration ofthe hand by the experts indicated that1 should have bid and made a littleslam. 1 haven't. played much bridgesince then, either. That, though, can'tbe blamed on the U-877.

Nothing nautical is apparent about this picture and most people would classify it as a collection of wooden tables and benches or an unpopulatedpicnic. Show it to an old·time West Coast sailor, however, and he would immediately identify it as Saturday morning on Naden's parade groundbefore the war. Every Saturday morning all tables, benches, mess lockers, bread barges, mess fannies and caddies were brought out on the paradeand while some of the cooks-of-messes scrubbed and waxed indoors the remainder scrubbed the tables and beliches white and polished the metalware.When all was again shipshape, the captain carried out his rounds at 1100~ Leave was usually piped from about 1300.

EXERCISE BONNY BOYa flurry of activity is taking place onthe carrier's flight deck as the servicingcrews refuel, rearm and respot the air­craft for another launch.

For the purpose of the exercise, theenemy territory, Fantasia, encompassesthe southern coast of New Brunswick,up the Saint John river to Gagetownand the territory to the west of thebordering river. The battlefield is asection of Camp Gagetown trainingarea. Physical representation of thetwo armies is on a skeleton basis only­a considerable difference from the massorganization which incorporates theCanadian Infantry Brigade during the

Briefed landmarks flash byuntil the final check point is identified.The leader then gains altitude to estab­lish radio contact with the air controlteam in the battle area. After beinggiven a target by topographical gridreference, he quickly sets up the direc­tion of attack, and the strike is on.

Time on target is kept to a minimum,reducing the enemy's chances for fight­ing back. Once the mission is completed,the attackers disappear down the riveras fast as they appeared. As the ex­pended unit retraces its route, anothersection is being briefed for a similarmission. Hour by hour, this same pro­cedure is carried out. Understandably,

All day Monday, December 5, HMCSBonaventure steamed to position herselfby the next morning off the "enemy"coast for the first air strike in supportof Blueland forces. At this criticalperiod, Blueland was under the threat ofinvasion by neighbouring Fantasia. In­telligence reports indicated that theFantasian army was massing its forceson the banks of river "X", which is thetopographical border between the twocountries. The enemy was attempting toestablish a bridgehead across the river.Blueland patrols with their integratedair control teams had penetrated theadvanced Fantasian zone of concentra­tion to serve as a delaying force.

On the flight deck, the Banshees com­mence their slow accelerating whine tostarting RPM. Parking chocks are re­moved and the aircraft directors guidethe twin-engine jets to the catapult.

annual summer training period in whichthe squadron has always been an in­tegral factor.

The element that is very real in thisexercise is the carrier, HMCS Bona­venture, and its embarked fightersquadron, VF 870. The exercise is de­signed to test the squadron in its roleof air-to-ground support and also itscompatability with maximum operationfrom the aircraft carrier. Real, indeed,and much alive are the bombs and the20mm cannon firings.

No part of such an operation can besuccessful unless close co-operation andliaison exist between the Army groundforces and the carrier. To meet theserequirements, an Army liaison officer isborne in the Bonaventure. Currentlyserving in this capacity is Lt. Stan Coteof the Lord Strathcona Horse (RC). Inthe battle area the liaison officers areMajor C. T. Grenier, of the Royal 22ndRegiment, assisted by Captain D. Creigh­ton, of the air control team. Constantcommunication between the air controlteam and the carrier provides the airliaison officer with the latest informationon tactical developments, target .posi­tions and strike requests and results.Through the ALO's briefings before eachmission, the pilots are able to get firsthand knowledge of the situation in thetarget area.

The war is over! The results wereextremely satisfying-as was to beexpected..

Missing only seven sorties, because ofmaintenance reasons, the squadron com­pleted 34 sorties in the two and a halfdays of sustained operations in theGagetown area. To support the inten­sive flying schedule, working hours werenecessarily long for all squadron per­sonnel. The satisfaction of a job welldone was worth the extra demands.­J.J.V.

The submariners of the Royal Navy'sSixth Submarine Squadron based atHalifax brought joy and Christmas spiritto themselves and 64 orphans from Hali­fax and surrounding district.

The submariners, only one quarter ofwhom have their families in Canada,played host to the children at a Christ­mas party in the drill shed of HMCDockyard.

The highlights of the party were atrip through the submarine HMS Aurigaand a visit from Santa Claus, who gaveout the gifts.

The children were also treated toswing and ferris wheel rides, slides, acartoon movie, ice cream, cookies, sand­wiches, cake and soft drinks.

The possibility that the sea can bemade to produce ten times the quantityof edible fish that it does today was sug­gested in an address by Sir AlisterHardy to the Zoology section of theBritish Association at Cardiff, Wales,last year.

How? By destroying creatures, suchas starfish, which make great inroadsinto the sea's available food supply.

Sir Alister (as reported in the Britishscientific journal Nature) referred tothe researches of Dr. Gunnar Thorson,distinguished Danish marine biologists,who had found there is a· much heaviercompetition on the sea-bed, from variousanimals such as starfish, for the foodavailable for fish, than had formerlybeen thought. Dr. Thorson had demon­strated that predators of this kind eatabout four times as much food as woulda quantity of fish of the same totalweight.

Dr. Thorson had concluded that thisled to "the amazing fact that only oneto two percent of the (potential) fishfood is actually eaten by the fish."

Sir Alister said that, if Dr. Thorson'scalculations were correct and if it waspossible to eliminate just a quarter ofthe pests, then 20 instead of just twopercent of the -food supply would beavailable to fish and could support acorrespondingly large quantity of fish.

The future may see combing or otherdevices dragged over the sea" floor toweed out the pests, which could,perhaps, be converted into poultryfood.

Looking to the still more distantfuture (says Nature), he believes thatthe fishermen of a hundred years ·hencemay include frogmen working tractor­driven trawls sent down from parentships above and pulling starfish eradica­tors over the seabed.

A unique oceanographic researchtower has been built by the UnitedStates Navy on the sea floor about amile off shore from San Diego,California.

About 90 feet high, with a main deckabout 27 feet above the high tide mark,the tower is designed for all sorts of

shallow water investigation. It was setup under the auspices of the Navy Elec­tronics Laboratory and is proving ex­tremely useful for meteorological, seasurface, water. temperature, biologicaland acoustical studies.

The main deck is a 22-foot squareslab of concrete supporting an instru­ment house. On a flat upper deck areelectrical transformers and meteorolog­ical instruments. A catwalk surroundsthe tower for handling equipment. Adiving bell is installed inside the towerframework.

The tower is considered the last wordin oceanographic research. Recent useshave been the measurement of wavesartd photographing of underwaterturbulence.

Sea-floor fuelling stations all over theworld may come into being if tests bythe U.S. Navy are successful, accordingto recent press reports.

The USN, to test undersea liquidstorage systems, has built a prototype50,OOO-gallon (about 1,250-barrel) plas­tic container and submerged it in about52 feet of water on the floor of theGulf of Mexico. It is only a segmentof a system of interconnected containerswith an eventual 25,OOO-barrel capacity.

It is felt that these future underwaterwarehouses could be made large enoughto hold" more than a million gallons of·fuel, enough to supply several destroyers

and smaller vessels. They are held tothe ocean floor by a tubular frameworkand nylon harness. "Other liquids couldalso be stored, including fresh water.

A three-year old porpoise may revolu­tionize underwater weapons, says theNavy Times published in Washington.

The porpoise is being studied atMarineland of the Pacific by the U.S.Naval Ordnance Test Station ChinaLake, California, to find out what en­ables them to swim at great sp'eeds withso .little drag or disturbance, how theysend out and receive sounds over dis­tances of several miles and how theycan withstand the terrific pressures at1,000 feet to Which they can descend.

The porpoise, called N otty after thefirst letters of the station, is six feetlong and weighs 180 pounds. She hasbeen traind to wear plastic rings andrubber sllction cups, swim through hoopsand around obstacles, and swim at fullspeed or make crash stops.

Observations of porpoises have deter­mined they can swim at speeds up to25 or 30 knots, apparently can deliverten times more muscle power relative to"veight than humans or dogs, can absorbenough oxygen to remain submerged forlong periods, seem to have greaterunderwater sound range capability thanthe Navy's sonar, can navigate whileblindfolded by sending out and receivingtheir own echoes, and have more bloodvessels at the tail end than the frontend.

HMCS Stadacona captured the Mari­time tri-service basketball champion­ship in February with a 60-50 win overthe other finalist, Cornwallis.

In the two-day round-robin tourneysix teams battled for a place in thefinals. Tournament results were Firstday: Gagetown defeated Shearwater50-29; Cornwallis beat Greenwood 49­36; Greenwood overcame Gagetown 60­54; Cornwallis defeated Stadacona 38-35;Shearwater beat Greenwood 31-28;Stadacona won over Gagetown 32-26;Stadacona swamped Maritime Air Com-

"In any other game a man can usuallybreathe," says PO Aylward, "but it isquite a feat in water polo to catch yourbreath without taking in half the pool."

Because the referee cannot see whatis going on under water many fouls goundetected. Holding an opponent'strunks, or pushing off from a check byplanting a pair of size twelves in thepit of his stomach causing him to doubleup like a jacknife, is all part of thegame.

Other cute tricks, though fouls, butaccepted as fate by water polo en­thusiasts, are taking a swipe at the ballwith a fist or with the open hand. Inboth these the ball is missed inten­tionally and the fist connects with achin or the open hand reaches past thehead to become a judo chop that nearlydecapitates the victim.

Sheanvater BestIn Small·Bore Shoot

HMCS Shearwaterheaded the Tri­Services' small-bore rifle meet in Feb-'ruary with a score of 1,760. The shootwas held at Shearwater.

Stadacona took second place with1,748, followed by Cornwallis, HalifaxGarrison, Gagetown Dragoons and Gage­town First Regiment.

Water polo is a game for strong swim­mers with great endurance. A playermust swim most of the time in thewater. Four 'ten-minute periods makeup a game but since this is stopped timethe tilt generally extends to one and ahalf hours. It is not a sport for thefaint-hearted.

Water polo is extremely popular inHungary and Australia, but it has notcaught on to any great extent inWestern Canada. In fact .the VictoriaPublic Library has the only water polocoaching manual in the city. "To getit," says PO Aylward, "you almost haveto go on a roster."

A player requires little equipment,beyond a pair of swim trunks, but heneeds muscles which can withstandterrific strain, and a tremendous amountof "plain guts".:......J.B. .

The destroyer escort had picked up the powerless schooner onthe morning of January 27 after unsuccessful attempts to receive a tow the night before. TheMarjorie and Dorothy, of Halifax, was broken down off the northeast tip of Sable Island, namedthe Graveyard of the Atlantic for the hundreds of wrecks on its shoals. Captain Garfield Anstey,52, and a crew of 10 were unsuccessful in repairing the vessel's engine after water had leakedinto the main bearing. The Sioux broke off from patrol to succor the schooner, wallowing in zeroweather, heavy icing conditions and 35 mph winds. As a former midshipman (blue patchdivision), I comment on the interestingarticle, "The Last Midshipman", in theFebruary issue. An otherwise nostalgicaccount, the story was marred by ahorrifying statement in the final para­graph of the story. I refer to the line. . . "Those of the RCN wore white,RCNR (young men with seagoing ex­perience in merchant ships or yachts)wore blue...." The italics are mine.

The Canadian Navy List of April 1939lists three RCNR midshipmen ... JohnArthur Mitchell, John Cowan Smith andmyself. I don't recall the exact wordingof the terms of entry as a "snotty" inthe-RCN.R,-bu-t-I-do-kr-l-Qw-a-youn-g-man--­had to be an indentured apprentice orcadet serving in a Class A merchantvessel of the British Merchant Navy.Mitchell and Smith served their time inthe impeccable white Empresses of theCPR, sailing between Vancouver andJapan, while I served in deep-guttedfreighters of the Donaldson line of Glas-gow, Scotland, trading between thePacific Coast and the United Kingdom,and later on the Atlantic. Yachtsmen,indeed!

With all respects to the yachting boys(many of whom rose to splendid heights !

in the RCNVR, and later in the RCN), "I think the writer's reference is ratherlike suggesting that entry into the ranksof "pro" tennis is open to Wimbledonfinalists or members of the Little WokingCroquet and Tennis Club.

TRIBALS TO BECOMMEMORATED

A fund has been established in theUnited Kingdom to keep green thememory of a famous class of ships, theTribal class destroyers, which estab­lished such a glorious record during theSecond World War. Details of the fundare given in a press release receivedrecently:

This year will see the re-appearancein the Royal Navy of the famous Tribalnames. Two ships (Type 81) are nowcompleting and five more will follow.HMS Ashanti commissions this summerand HMS Gurkha in the autumn.

Under the patronage of Admiral ofthe Fleet Sir Philip L. Vian, GCB, KBE,DSO and two Bars, and Admiral Sir.R. S. Gresham Nicholson, KCB, CB,DSO, DSC, a committee has been formedto organize an appeal to be known asThe Tribals Memorial Fund. AdmiralSir Frederick R. Parham, GBE, KCB,DSO, is the chairman. The first pub­licity was carried in the United King­dom press on March 1.

It is hoped to make a presentation toeach new Tribal frigate in memory ofthe old Tribal destroyers who earnedsuch fame during the last war. It is ofinterest that only one ship in the RoyalNavy, HMS Warspite, won more Battle'Honours between 1939 and 1945 than aTribal. HMS Nubian gained 13 to theWarspite's 14, and in total the BattleHonours of all the war-time Tribals, ofwhich there were 16 in the Royal Navy,must be unrivallea----Oyany otlier cl-=-as=s::----­of ship.

At the end of the war there were fourTribals in the Royal Canadian Navy, allof which fought in Atlantic and Europeanwaters, and three in the Royal Aus­tralian Navy whose service was in theFar East.

It is believed that there are manypeople, both in and outside the service,in addition to the officers and men ofthe Royal Navy, Royal Australian Navy,Royal Canadian Navy, Royal New Zea­land Navy and the South African NavalForces who served in the Tribal de­stroyers from 1938 onwards, who willbe interested in this appeal.

Contributions, which in the case ofindividuals it is suggested should belimited to two guineas, (about $6) willbe gratefully received by the treasurer(Captain E. N. Sinclair, DSO) andshould be addressed to The Treasurer,Captain's Office, HMS Sea Eagle, Lon­donderry, Northern Ireland. Chequesshould be made out to the TribalsMemorial Fund.

Pelorous Jack, the famous porpoisewhich accompanied ships in and outof Pelorous Sound, New Zealand, for32 years around the beginning of thecentury, wasn't really providing freepilotage service. He was just goingalong for the ride.

This is the conclusion to be drawnfrom an article by two Woods :HoleOceanographic Institution scientists,Andrew A. Fejer and Richard H.Backus, in the November 26, 1960 issueof Nature.

Their article in the British scientificweekly is entitled "Porpoises and theBow-Riding of Ships Under Way" andis largely a technical discussion ofthe way in 'which the smaller mem­bers of the species cadge free ridesfrom bow waves or wind-raised wavesin the open sea.

The way porpoises station them­selves near the bows of ships andappear to remain poised there, almostmotionless with respect to the ship, is\vell known to most sailors. Theirperiodical playful leaps from thewater are simply. to renew their airsupply, the authors indicate. Whilebelow the surface, they utilize the.push of the bow wave to carry· themforward, with little expenditure oftheir own energy.

The authors ·refer to Pelorous Jackas the "most famous of. all individualbow-riders". His career lasted from1880 to 1912 and he was granted specialprotection by the New Zealand gov­ernment.

The identification of Pelorous Jackas a grampus is regarded with acertain amount of scepticism by: theauthors, Who say that, in their ex...perience, grampuses avoid close ap­proaches to a ship, rarely comingnearer than 50 to 75 yards.
