"Which is up?"

This question - hardly redolent of thepoetry of the sea - is one that springsimnlediately to Jnind, although the pictureon the opposite page is certainly not an"abstraction". It is, in fact, a picture oflIMes Oriole, training yacht for Venturecadets, on the port tack and throwing awelter of foatn and spray to starboard.

The photograph was taken on board theOriole by lanles A. McVie, APSA, ofVictoria, whose work, also depicting the

, Oriole, in gentler mood, appeared on theJune 1955 cover of "The Crowsnest".

This latest photograph by Mr. McViehas been hung in 18 international photo­graphic salons during the past nine monthsand was the Victoria Camera Club's "Printof the Year" for 1955.

Mr. J\1cVie, a former Canad~an Armycaptain, is elnployed with the audit staffof the Naval Supply Depot in HMC Dock..yard, Esquimalt. His· photographs havebeen displayed in many p~rts of the worldand have won hundreds of awards.

16 Ships ExerciseIn Caribbean

Five East Coast ships sailed fromHalifax for the Caribbean toward theend of March to join 11 other surfaceunits in the largest peacetime man­reuvres carried out by the Royal Can­adian Navy outside Canadian waters.

They were the Crusader, with Rear­Admiral R. E. S. Bidwell, Flag OfficerAtlantic Coast, embarked, the Huronand the 11th .Escort Squadron, com­posed of the coastal escorts Portage,WaHaceburg and Sault Ste. Marie.

They joined the latter part of thefleet exercises out of St. Thomas in theVirgin Islands. The other 11 RCN shipsin the Caribbean were the Magnificent,the Quebec, the destroyer escorts Iro­quois, Algonquin, Haida, Micmac, Cres­cent and Cayuga and the frigates Jon­quiere, New Glasgow and Ste. Therese.

Friendship andTraining Mingled

Take one part hard training and onepart good neighbourliness, mix well,and you have a member of the ship'scompany of the Quebec, as evidencedduring the three-month Caribbeantraining cruise the Quebec began fromHalifax January 24.

Daily training was provided for bothjunior officers and men. There weremidshipmen (air) who, on completionof initial sea training in the Quebec,

will proceed to the United States inMay for flying training. There wereexecutive midshipmen who will receivesubsequent training at the RoyalNaval College, Greenwich, England.And there were men of the seamen andengineering and electrical branches whoare being given basic and conversiontraining in their respective trades.

Good neighbourliness. is provided bythe ship's company for the residents ofall the ports they visit. Wreath-laying,band music, ceremonies and entertain­ment for orphans highlighted the ac­tivities at some recent ports-of-call."

At Vera Cruz, Mexico, the orchestra,clowns and movies entertained 250children at the Orphanage HospicioZamora. The appreciative childrenpresented a white rose to each memberof the entertainment troupe.

The introduction of the angled deckand the mirror deck landing aid incarriers of the Royal Navy has reo·duced the deck landing accident ratedue to pilot error to less than one­fifth of the previous figure.

This information was given in theBritish House of Commons on Febr­uary 23 by the parliamentary secre­tary to the Admiralty in reply to aquestion.

midshipmen visited the Mexican NavalAcademy, which was built recentlyoutside Vera Cruz. The Canadian offi­cers were most impressed with themodern instructional facilities available,the precision and smartness of drill andthe bearing of the naval cadets.

Highlight of this visit was the officialcall made on His Excellency Ruiz Cor­tines, president of the Republic ofMexico, by the commanding officer andtwo of his officers. They were flownto Mexico City at the invitation of theCanadian Ambassador, D. S. Cole, inan aircraft put at their disposal bythe Mexican Navy.

While the Canadian naval officerswere in the capital city, the· Canadianambassador and the captain laid awreath at the Independence Monument.Present were units of the MexicanNavy and Marine Corps.

Queen PresentsGeorge Medal

Lieut. (P) Douglas A. Muncaster, 30,of Montreal, RCN helicopter pilot, re­ceived the George Medal from QueenElizabeth on March 6, 1956, at Buck­ingham Palace in London, England.

Lieut. Muncaster was accompanied tothe investiture by his wife, Patricia,and their daughter, Rosemary.

He received the award for risking hislife in the March 1955 rescue of a fel­low naval flyer, Sub-Lt. J. V. Searleof Woodstock, Ont., from a burning Sea

Cdr. Young was born in West Petpes­wick, ,Halifa~ County, N,S., on June 8,1912. He joined the Royal CanadianReserve in December 1934 on the lowerdeck as an able seaman. .'

He went on active service in Septem~

bel' 1939 as a petty officer and was pro­moted to the rank of acting mate inMarch, 1940. His first appointment wasto the minesweeper Comox as naviga·ting officer, followed by service in thearmed yacht Vison as the e~ecutive

officer. His subsequent wartime servicesaw him in command of several ships,including the Bangor minesweeperLachine, a sister ship, the BrockviHe,and the Algerine escort vessels Portageand Borde?' Cities. While in the BorderCities, as a lieutenant-commander, hewas the senior officer of Western LocalEscort Group W2.

During this period, from August 25,1944, to May 16, 1945, his group escorted30 convoys totalling 1,500 ships of whichnone were lost through enemy action,hazards of the sea or for other reasons.His largest convoy was one of 143 ships.

At war's end he was on the staff ofCaptain (D) Halifax, as Senior OfficerMinesweepers.

Cdr. Young transferred to the regularforce in January, 1946, and since thenhad held a' number of appointments bothashore and afloat.

Cdr. Young was awarded the MBEin June, 1945, for his wartime services.His citation read: "By his cheerfulnessand whole hearted devotion to duty hehas set an outstanding e~ample to thosewith whom he served, in keeping withthe best traditions of the service".

St. Laurent toSteam Up Potomac

The Royal Canadian Navy's new de­stroyer escort, the St. Laurent, wasscheduled to pay an operational visitto Washington, D.C., from April 16 toApril 18, following completion of eval­uation trials out of Key West, Florida.

The St. Laurent was commissionedat Montreal last October 29 and com­pleted her work-ups in the Bermudaarea early this year, before sailing fromHalifax for Key West and trials withthe U.S. Navy.

Cdr. Harold Garrett, district admini­strator for the Department of Veterans'Affairs, has been re-appointed in com­mand of Cabot. He succeeds Cdr. F.A. O'Dea as commanding officer of theSt. John's, Nfld., naval division.

PICTURE TOLD STORYOF LABRADOR TRAGEDY

Activities of the Royal Canadian Navy in the Arctic have expanded greatly since, the SecondWorld War, but the interest of the Royal Navy in the region extends over several centuries. It isthought that the two pictures which ,appear here are related and that someone may have informaionwhich will identify them. The wing collars and moustaches sported by the officers would scarcely beregarded as rig-ol.the-day in this age and the distinction lace on the sleeves is notable, for 'itslack of executive curl. The Lily had been in St. MargaretBay, on the northwest coast of New­foundland and, in rough weather, hadheaded out across the Strait of BelleIsle for Fureatu Bay in order to meetthe mail. In dense fog and also smokefrom a forest fire ashore, the Lily droveashore September 16, 1889, near AmourPoint Light. Three of the ship's boatswere put over the side but "all capsizedin the boiling sea. Seven lives werelost. The scene Was photographed thenext day.

In the same issue' of the IllustratedLondon News there appeared' a photo­graph of HMS Canada, the first ship toenter the new Halifax Graving Dockthe day it was opened by the C-in-C,North America and West Indies, Vice­Admiral Sir George W. Watson, KCB,on September 20, 1889. At the time, thenew drydock facilities were acclaimedas a great boon to both Halifax and theRoyal Navy, for the nearest British dockwas the 20-year-old floatirig drydock atBermuda.

'rhe happy coincidence of the appear­ance of both the Lily and graving dockpictures in the same issue of the maga­zine thus solved the mysteries of twocaptionless photographs in Naval Head­quarters files. References to the gravingdock appear on pages 79 and 161 ofVolume I 6f "The Naval Service ofCanada".-E.C.R.

WhirlybirdShatters Dream

The cryptic words "Prep CharlieForward, Relative Wind Zero" crack­led In the pilot's earphones announcingthe start of another rescue mission forHU 21, the utlllty helicopter unit.

It was 1015 on February 23, 1956, andthe Magnificent was proceeding out ofHalifax Harbour bound for a twomonth's cruise to the sunny Caribbeanwhen the Master-at-Arms discovereda surplus. In fact the surplus discov­ered him. It was an AB naval stores­man from the RCN All' Station whocame aboard at 0800 that morning Insearch of signatures. By the time theyhad been obtained the ship had sailedand he was off to the tropics in hisdungarees!

Within five minutes of a radio mes­sage to Shearwater describing the situ­ation the duty helicopter, piloted byLieut. Grat).t Soutar and Lieut. RonMcClymont was flying to the rescue.A landing was accomplished on theforward end of the flight deck as theship steamed outward bound pastGeorge's Island in Halifax Harbour.The Shanghaied victim was flown backto his base.

As "Maggie" sailed off to the excitingWest Indies, HU 21 recorded anotherroutine "Mission accomplished" and awistful ABNS amid outstanding forms156 heard again the tocsin of adventureon the Spanish Main.

is confusing this picture with thegrounding of HMS Amphion in Hal'oStrait in 1889 when the Governor Gen­eral, Lord Stanley, was on board. ,Buton that occasion the Amphion refloatedherself and made Esquimalt withoutassistance. Part of the Amphion'scrumpled bilge keel is still to be seenup by the big Chinese Bell in BeaconHill Park, Victoria.

The answer came in a letter fromNoel Mostert, New York correspondentof the Montreal Daily Star, who foundthe identical photograph in the Illustra­ted London News of November 9, 1889.

It is now known that the ship in ques­tion was HMS Lily; the locale, the coastof Labrador~

LAST NOVEMBER, The Crowsnestpublished a "mystery photograph"

showing a late 19th century naval shipashore. Unlike the earlier one of theStadacona, which brought many replies,the "ship-ashore" photograph is appar­ently recognized by few.

George E. Etheridge, of MontereyPark, California, who in 1902 served inHMS Shearwater on the Pacific Station,was' certain that he knew the story ofthis picture and identified the ship asHMS Amphion ashore near Victoria inthe 1890s, naming the ship in the back­ground as HMS Phaeton.

However, in tracking down this sug­gestion it is thought that Mr. Etheridge

how one feels the punishment shouldfit the crime. However that may be,when you hear theln pronounced withgood rhythm and vigoui", you can wellbelieve that Oin days gone by they havebeen executed with genuine relish. Whata wonderful variety is presented by theold sea-chanties! Are they forgotten byships' crews in these days of diesel en­gines and luxury liners? I hope not,although I have yet to hear any ofthem sung at sea. Ships still heave,but not to the strains of "Blow the mandown"; men no longer hoist the main­sail to "Haul away, Joe"; mec.hanicalwinches turn without the stimulus of"Anchors aweigh". Perhaps, however,the sailor is still reminded of his girlon shore by 'hearing ~'Shenandoah".

Whether forgotten by the sailor ornot, sea chanties still bring delight tomany a landlubber. Even to one whosenautical experience is confined to splic­ing the main-brace they bring a cer­tain nostalgia. They evoke a longingto Hgo down to the sea· again"; to view"the whlte clouds flying"; to feel "theflung spray and the blown spume", andto hear "the sea-gulls crying".

In my time I have come across nota few ancient mariners trained undersail-even some who had rounded theHorn in a four-master. Nearly all ofthem had a repertoire of chanties, al­though getting them to sing somethnestook considerab Ie pressure. Chantieshave the salty tang, and it is good toknow that they are remembered bymany a retired sailor in· our MaritimeProvhices. Collections made by HelenCreighton, Kenneth Peacock, Leslie Belland others show that they are still aliveand highly popular. Most of them can

be traced back to older hands; per­haps they have "suffered a. sea change"(although I would hal'dly call it suf-·fering) in crossing the Atlantic, but

The landsman also contributes to themusic of the sea; the imagination oimany a great composer has been stirredby the mighty main. With sOlne, im­agination has been backed up by ex­perience. Rimski-Korsakoff," for ex....ample, well knew what he was writingabout when he penned his graphic pic- .ture of Sinbad's shipwreck in "Sche­herazade"; he had been an officer inthe Russian Navy and had written asymphony-probably the first ever com­posed by a Russian-during his sea-faring days, .

Mendelssohn's overture "Fingal'sCave" was a direct outcome of a cruiseon the west coast of Scotland- in factthe opening bars were sketched on thevery spot. It would be hard to find'­anywhere a more impressive scene thanFingal's Cave on the fascinating butforbidding island of Staffa; weatherconditions have never allowed of mylanding there, but photographs havemade me familiar with the great basaltpillars that rise from the water like thepipes of a mighty organ played on bywind and sea. Mendelssohn rarely de­serted the classic forms in his music,but rOlnantic urges were also strong inhim and the glamour of Staffa· arousedthis to the full.

It would be hard to find in all musi­cal literature a more finely conceivedand skilfully executed picture of thesea than Debussy's "La Mer:". Farfrom robust in health, Debussy prob­ably hated the reality of even a Chan­nel crossing, but he loved writing aboittwater in any form..-he pictures foun­tains, mirrored reflections and thesound of bells under water-and theocean stirred his imagination to oneof his finest efforts. He begins bypainting a calm sea at dawn and itsgradual awakening to vigorous motion

Newfoundland songs, ttnknown in Canada before the Second World War,were on the lips of thousands of Canadian sailors once RCN warships beganoperating from St. John's and other ports of the Old Colony. When theRiver class destroyer Saguenay acquired her. own song, the words were setto the Newfoundland tune "The Ryans and the Pittmans", more often knownby the first line of the chorus: "We'll rant and we'll roar like true New­foundlanders". The Saguenay's song tells of ·the ship's torpedoing. Latershe had her stern blown off by her own depth charges in a convoy collisionand ended her ser-vice career as a training ship at Cornwallis.

Arnold Bax,Frank.Bridge, Benjamin Britten and manyo,ther composers remind us f:r;om timeto time that the blood of the English-:man is mixed with salt water.

Of sea songs other than chanties agood many of the most popular datefrom the 18th century, when a vastempire was being brought under theBritish flag largely through the effortsof sturdy British seamen. "The Bayof Biscay", "Heart of Oak", and "Rule,Britannia" were a natural accompani­ment to marine exploits. The 19th cen­tury, with its "Death of Nelson", "TheSailor's Grave" and the like, tendedperhaps to be over-sentimental, butafter all the sailor has his sentimentalside. And it was the 19th century thatproduced the ever fresh and popular"H. M. S. Pinafore".

The sea itself is music. 1t has rhythmand melody and its motion never ceases.Perhaps this humble tribute may beallowed from a musician who-even asa mere passenger - has a' thoroughrelish for "a life on the ocean wave."

opera, Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas", hasa rousing sailors' chorus concluding withthe words:

"Take a boozy shm't leave of yournymphs on the shore and silencetheir mourning with vows of re­turning,Though never in-tending to visitthem more."

This is followed by a hornpipe. I wellremember the problem it presented, instaging a performance which I con­ducted many years ago-how ancientGreek sailors should be costumed whendancing a hornpipe. I forget how theproblem was solved.

Strange to say, I have been able tofind almost no works by that enthusi­astic yachtsman, Sir Hubert Parry, thathave reference to the sea. Elgar's "SeaPictures" for contralto and orchestraare effective, but for the most part hismusic remains on terra firma. His Irishcontemporary Standford was respon­sible for some stirring sea songs towords by Newbolt, and the ScottishAlexander MacKenzie's nautical over­ture, "Britannia", is still occasionallyplayed, though nearly all of his otherworks are forgotten. It remained how­ever for the still living Ralph VaughanWilliams to give us musical seascapes

as noon draws near; his second move­ment pictures sportive waves playingrollicking games' in sparkling sunlight;finally, the "Dialogue of the Wind andthe Sea" depicts a great storm as theship is tossed about and the windwhistles in the rigging. Storms at seaare a favourite subject with many com­posers, but rarely are they so subtlyand graphically portrayed. AnotherFrench composer, 'Gabriel Pierne, inhis "Children's Crusade", depicts, first,the sparkling Mediterranean as seenfroin the shore on a bright day andlater, a shattering storm and shipwreck.

Wagner's opera, "The Flying Dutch­man", is permeated by a feeling. forthe sea. The story is based on thelegend-familiar to all. readers of Cap­tain Marryat's "The Phantom Ship"­of the Dutch captain who, having swornto round Table Bay in spite of windand weather, "though I should beatabout here until the Day of Judgment,"is condemned to wander the seas for­ever. In Wagner's version, however,he is allowed to land every few yearsand ·seek a woman whose love will liftthe curse. The opera ends as the de­voted heroine Senta gives her life bythrowing herself into the sea; the con­demned Dutch ship sinks and disap­pears, while against a vivid sunset theDutchman and his beloved are seen torise heavenward in a warm embrace.The fate of the crew does not appar­ently concern the composer.

To English composers the subject ofthe sea has, as one might expect, anespecial appeal. The earliest English

Veteran HonouredOn 80th Birthday

At first glance, it seemed a typicalsocial gathering in Ottawa's Tiffanyapartments. A second look over the 35couples showed no less than five ad­mirals, other naval types and key civilservants, all of whom have played amajor part in the growth of the RoyalCanadian Navy.

They were gathered to celebratequietly the 80th birthday, on January14, of an old co.ntemporary, Cdr. ErnestHaines, OBE, MBE, RCN (Ret'd), a manwith the staggering total of 54 years'combined Royal Navy and RCN service.

"Daddy" Haines, as he became affec­tionately known in the Second WorldWar, was born on January 14, 1876, inBristol, England. Sixteen years laterhe started his naval career, as a boyseaman in a 42-gun brig.

He spent a couple of years on theChina station and, during the next twodecades, saw much of Africa and theOrient. His promotion to commissionedrank, a rare occurrence in those days,took place during this time. '

In 1912, Cdr. Haines volunteered totransfer to the RCN to assist in runningCanada's new and struggling little Navy.He served successively in the Niobe andRainbow, Canada's first cruisers, beforebeing appointed for duties on the WestCoast.

Cdr. Haines was promoted to lieuten­ant in 1918 and in the following yearwas appointed an MBE for his warservices.

In 1926, he was placed on the retiredlist as a lieutenant-commander. Between

James Kenneth Luke (1949); CPONorman G. A. Anderson, (1951); CPORichard W. Aldhelm-White, (1952),and PO Samuel H. Shaw, (1954).

Born on May 8, 1920, in St. Thomas,Ont., PO Jackson was living in Van­couver when he elitered the Navy asan ordinary seaman in February, 1940.

He has served at sea in the corvettesEyebrigltt and Sorel, frigate Ko/canee,cruiser Uganda (now Quebec), and de­stroyer Haida, in addition to trainingand duties ashore in Canada and theUnited Kingdom.

PO Jackson served a tour of dutyin the Korean War theatre in theHaida, from June, 1952, until July,1953.

He has been Press Officer in the De­partment of External Affairs, at Ottawa,and in addition has peen informationofficer in the Ottawa naval division.

Llewelyn Prize"7on. by CanadianPO Kenneth Albert Jackson, has

been awarded the Llewelyn Prize forthe highest average in a recent gun­nery instructor course at HMS Excel­lent.

The prize was founded in 1917 inmemory of the Cdr. Herbert Llewelyn,RN, who was killed in action on boardHMS Queen Mary at the Battle of Jut­land the year previous. It is madequarterly or half-yearly with moneyfrom a trust fund at Admiralty set upby his parents and sisters. It consistsof £5 and a sheepskin document suit­ably inscribed.

PO Jackson is the sixth Canadianto have won the award. The five otherCanadians include Lt. Charles L. Mc­Derby, RCN, (Ret'd), (1939); CPO

After a lapse of several years, theNavy Mothers' League of Edmonton hasbeen reorganized and will meet regu­larly on the third Saturday of eachmonth in the wardroom of HMCS Non­such, the Edmonton naval division.

At its first social function on March17, the Navy Mothers' League enter­tained the wives of Nonsuch officers.

Honorary president of the organiza­tion is Mrs. Norman Cameron, Thehonorary vice-president, Mrs. R. M,Shaver, was the first president of theNavy Mothers' League during the waryears. Other officers are Mrs. W. Flem­ing, president; Mrs. R. Guy, secretaryand Mrs. A. Strange, treasurer.

wars, he worked for the Navy as a civilservant.

A well-known rifle shot, he was s~lec­

ted by the Dominion of Canada RifleAssociation to be adjutant of the Cana­dian Bisley team in 1937. He has beenserving faithfully in recent year~ ascamp commandant of the DCRA shootsat Connaught Rifle Ranges, outsideOttawa, where the Bisley teams areselected and annual Dominion shootsrun off. His many years as a valuablemember of the OCRA executive wererecognized in March, 1955, by his ap­pointment as a Life Governor. Cdr.Haines has also been. active in theNational Defence Headquarters RifleAssociation and for. better than aquarter-century has been HonoraryVice-President of that organization..

On the first day of September 1939Cdr. Haines was recalled to active ser­vice at Naval Headquarters. He serveda hitch in the armament depot on theEast Coast and at the beginning of 1943was promoted to his present rank.

That June he assumed his fin1;ll ap­pointment of the war years as navalexecutive assistant to the Director ofNaval Ordnance. In January 1946 hewas appointed an Officer of the aBE,the citation stating: "This officer hasto .his credit 54 years combined servicein the RN and RCN. He has shown un­usual keenness and energy in the per­formance of his duties during the pres­ent war and his experience has been ofinestimable value and set a fine ex­ample, which has been an inspiration toaU with whom he h~s come in contact."

One of his proudest memories is thathe was among the hundred bluejacketschosen for the honour of drawing QueenVictoria's body from Windsor Station toSt. George's Chapel. For his part inVictoria's funeral, Cdr. Haines receive<;ithe medal of the Rbyal Victorian Order.

Medals he holds from other days in­clude the East Africa Medal with Clasp(1902-'04), 1914 Star, British WarMedal, Victory Medal, and CoronationMedal (1937).

On the day he became an octogenar­ian, the company that honoured him wasaugust, from the naval standpoint. In­·cluded in the roster of admirals wereVice-Admiral H. T. W. Grant, retiredChief of Naval Staff; Rear-Admiral F.L. Houghton (Ret'd), former vice-chief;Engineer Rea,r-Admiral G. L. Stephens,(Ret'd), Rear-Admiral (E) J. G.Knowlton, retiring, and Vice-AdmiralH. G. DeWolf, who became Chief of theNaval Staff just ·two days later. Therewas R. M. (Dicky) Pearson, a key figurein the growth of the fleet, and a repre­sentation also attended from the officeof the Minister of National Defence.

(E) (A/E) A. C. Brown, of Head­quarters,' whose father, Shipwright Cdr.C. H. Brown, RCN (Ret'd), was a ship­mate of Cdr. Haines in the old Niobeand Rainbow.

Diving CourseFor All Comers

The clearance diving section at theTorpedo Anti-Submarine School, Stada­cona, has started a four-week coursewhich is an introduction into divingwith compressed air breathing appara­tus and the well-known aqua-lung.

Pupils are trained to dive to depthsup to 50 feet and are given instructionin underwater physics and marine life ..·The course is open to all comerswhether they be cooks, engine room me­chanics, seamen or electricians.

A new autolnatic telephone exchangehas been installed and went into uselast September. It is a vast improve­Inent over the old manually operatedswitchboard and some 400 telephonesare listed. It is, however, no longerpossible to phone one's wife or girlfriend any old time unless one is luckyenough to have access to an "unre­stricted" phone, of which there areonly 60, These are connected directlyto the outside exchange. This shouldresult in a considerable saving as form­erly an average of 22,000 phone callsto outside stations were made each1110nth.

All in all, the communications staffat Shearwater is quite pleased with itsnew COMCEN and hopes that if otherestablishments are contemplating simi­lar constructions in the future, they willimitate the plan of this building, which,it is felt, is easily the most modernCommunication Centre in Canada.

The annual Cadet Ball of the Uni­versity of Toronto Naval Training Divi­sion was held at York on Friday,February 24, and lived up to its r.epu­tation of' being one of the social sea­son's gala events.

The ball was preceded by a recentionin York's wardroom at which the com­manding officer' and officers of theUNTD entertained the patrons andguests of honour.

M y YEARS as member of the, RCNVR Supply Department were

in a large measure responsible forconsider;;lble apprehension on visitingNelles Bloc~ in HMCS Naden. Mymemory of galley wood and coal stoves,unattractive eating spaces and longperiods of waiting for a meal is veryvivid, even now-ten years after theend of the Second World War.

On entering the cafeteria I wasamazed at. the difference the years·,hadl11.ade. The cafeteria, where all menof the rank of leading seaman and be­low are victualled, contains 160 tableswhich seat 640 men. The men line upto be served cafeteria style, and the

The Naval Officers' Association, Van~couver, has issued an appeal for moreofficers for the Junior Sea Cadet Corpsfor boys between the ages of 12 and14. The chief reason for the appealis the resounding success of the newcorps, which has attained an enrolment0'£ nearly 200 boys.

The Junior Sea Cadets parade eachSaturday morning at Discovery, theVancouver naval division, and the pros­pects are that a large proportion ofthem will graduate into the Royal Can­adian Sea Cadets when they reach theage of 14.

first persons to be served often finishtheir meal by the. time the last of the640 capacity have passed through. Thusthere 'are tables continuously available,and approximately two thousand menmay be fed during a meal hour.

On entering the galley proper, Inoticed the electric ranges and grills-a far-cry from those coal and woodstoves. And the :refrigeration! Thereis even a refrigerator used for sullagestowage 'until the sullage can be pickedup l;Jy disposal units (no flies in thisgalley) .

Another feature that impressed mewas the way the galley was sectionedoff into units. The vegetable prepara-

tion room contains a large work table,potato peelers -and a refrigerato~ solelyfor the purpose of keeping vegetablescool and crisp. A smaller room is usedfor preparing bread and- butter trays.Another refrigerator contains all thedairy products. Juices, citrus fruits,etc., are kept in still another refriger­ator.

At one end of the galley is thebutchery section equipped with allthe modern conveniences available forbutchery. Again, there is a separaterefrlgerator; this time used for meatstowage exclusively. Manhandling ofthe meat is kept to a minimum by theuse of overhead trolleys to convey themeat from loading platform to refrig­erator.

Another section contains the bakerywhich is equipped with a. battery ofelectric ovens, huge mixing machinesand steam kettles. The large ·banana­cream pies that were stacked oh anearby rack of shelves had my mouthwatering. Just outside the bakery· doorthere are king-size electric deep fat­fryers with which the galley staff couldcook fish and chips, etc., for 800 menin a very short time.

,On my way to the servery I passeda battery of steam kettles that rangein size from 80 gallons down to 20gallons, and on the opposite side qfthe galley there are three large steelboxes which, I was informed, are steampressure· cookers used for steamingvegetables.

In the servery I was shown- a setof toasters, and was told these toasterswork so efficiently that they requiretwo men to place the bread in and taketh~ toast out. Another feature is a longchill cabinet used to stow cold platesand other foods that require coolingduring the serving period.

Despite the. size and complexity ofequipment, the cafeteria and galley areimmaculate at all times. Modern equip­ment is paying off in .nourishing bal­anced and enjoyable meals in healthfulsurroundings.-L.E.B.

STICKSYEARS AGO, before movies and

television had almost supplantedother forms of entertainment, the oldchalk-talk artist used to tour the landand hold audiences spellbound with hischatter and the lively pictures thatflowed from the chalk and charcoal heheld in his fingers.

The trick he relied on to hold the at­tention of his audience was to start witha simple idea and build it up, bothverbally and visually, to a complex one.The instructor of today, in the Navy orelsewhere, has to try to accomplishmuch the same thing. He has to beginwith a few basic ideas and graduallybuild them into an intricate structure,all the time hoping that his pupils havenot lost their way.

In the olden times (as too many proudfathers have heard their youth referredto by their progeny), the road to learn­ing was almost entirely through hear­ing-the auditory channel. With thediscovery that the eyes also provided ameans of learning, the emphasis for. atime swung the other way and the mov­ing picture film appeared to be the finalsolution of the problem acquiringknowledge.

.Lantern slides have been used forgenerations, with the obscured lecturersnapping his fingers or flashing a lightto say when the next picture should ap­pear on the screen and, with due apolo­gies for the picture being upside down,backward or out of sequence, plungingdoggedly on his way. Film strip gotaway from some of these technical diffi­culties· and talking film made it look asif the lecturer could go job-hunting. Butthere was this difficulty-every develop­ment seemed to represent a progressiveloss of contact between the lecturer andthe student.

There were other developments, withsome of the virtues of the older devicesand some new merits of their own, suchas the overhead projector and theopaque projector. The overhead pro­jector was particularly valuable in itsadaptability to visual training aids. Itsmain feature is that it can be used toproduce a large image at a short screendistance whiie the projector is in frontof the class. This enables the instructorto face the class and maintain a person­to-person relationship with his students.

The arrival of the frigrate KNMDraug, the f<:>rmer HMCS Penetang,at the Norwegian naval base at Ber­gen was well· covered by the .pressand radio of Norway.

In a press conference Rear-AdmiralE.· Hostvedt of the Norwegian Navysaid:

"The agreement between Canada andNorway for the loan of three frigatesillustrates Canadats friendly attitudetowards 'Norway and characterizes heroutsta.nding effort towards the com..n1.on interest of the North AtlanticTreaty Organization/'

The Penetang is the first of t}1reefrigates to be transferred on loan. Theother' two are the To'ronto and P'res­tonian which were to be commissionedNorwegian ships in late April.

The magnetic board is a sheet of gal­vanized metal! in a wooden frame andpainted black. Clip magnets hold thecardboard aids to the board.

Gloucester' is concerned with com­munications instruction and some of thesubjects which have been effectivelytaught by means of the boards· are: theadministrative and communicationschain of command; the composition,construction and analysis of the stand­ard:rnessage format, the rapid and skil­ful reading of the teletype tape, andshipboard organization.

The extension of the method. to otherfields· of learning can be readily appre­ciated. Tp.us, ,in medicine, it can beused to portray the location and inter­relationship of body organs. In navaltactics, .the fundamentals of manoouvrescan be graphically portrayed by havingstudents assist in manipulating piecesrepresenting ships; in mathematics, aproblem can be worked through ~tep by

, step at a speed adjusted to the compre­hension of. the class.. The progressive build-up of facts is

the gr~at· merit. of the flannel or mag­netic board training. The developmentof an idea is continuously' presented andthe earlier phases of the instruction canbe retraced and emphasized.

Never let it be said that the boardsdo not have their difficulties. By' theend of a class, the ·board may resemblea game of Scrabble a'fter someone hasjoggled. the table, and the thought andlabour involved- in preparing the piecesare matters not to be taken too lightly.

However, the .problems are not insur­mouo..table and the experience atGloucester has been encouraging enoughto indicate the use of flannel or magneticboards is worth attempting in manytypes of naval instruction~

Everyone of these systems has its ad­vantages and faults. The old chalk­talker would find himself hard put togive a visual demonstration of ~he

atomic bomb; the talking film would getthe idea across effectively. Each of thenew devices fits. int.o· various phases oftraining.

Experiments with the various trainingaids were conducte~ at HMCS Glouces....ter by Lt.-Cdr. G. B. Tamburello, USN,during his period as training officerthere and he found there .were certaincheap, simple and effective visual train­ing methods which had been bypassedby instructors who' had perhaps peenoversold on mechanical· gadgets.

Lt.-Cdr. Tamburello found it was' pos-. sible. to put over ideas effectively andfirmly by means of two simple devices,the· flannel board and the magneticboard, both of which are identical inprinciple, except for the means of co­hesion. In one case the visual aidsstick' to the board by means of flannelcoming in contact with other clingingmaterial; in the other, magnets do thejob. Either can be purchased or home:..made.

One reason for their unpopularity,even with those who have investigatedtheir use, is that preparation of thecards and graphic presentations usedon the boards, has to be done by theinstructor on his own time, whereasfilm strips, movies and other aids comeready-made. Too often an instructor'swork schedule is laid out so that histime is fully consumed by classes, with­out allowance' for .lesson preparation,marking examinations and carrying outservice duties.

Lt.-Cdr. Tamburello suggests thatschools should allow extra time for in­sfructors with an artistic bent to pro­duce training. aids for themselves andother members of the staff. Theeventual saving in time and improve­ment of the quality of the instructionwould more than compensate for thehours lost from classes by the desig­nated instructors.

The advantage of the flannel andmagnetic boards is that they allow fora step by step pres.entation of a subject,with the instructor at all times 'in ,com­municationwith his class. He can.dwellupon' key points and, aware of the diffi­culties of his students, he can adjust hispresentation as he goes along. Inotherwords, he is not tied down by a stereo­typed presen~ation of a subject.

The flannel board is simply a woodenboard covered with flannel. . The train­ing aids used with itare pieces of carq.­board backed with sandpaper or flockmaterial.

HERALDRY ON THE HIGH SEASDecorum is the Rule in Designing Badges forHMC Ships, but Humour has Still a Place

T HE SLIM grey shape of the des­troyer slips past the breakwater, a

gentle ripple from her bows veeringacross the surface of the harbour. On

_.her upper deck a bosun's call shrills andthe hands break ~:l'rom their "enteringharbour" stations to man the heavinglines and springs. As she eases 'along­side her berth at the jetty a small me­dallion on her after canopy comes intoview; a little splash of colour in bronzeframe. You'd never notice it unless youknew it was there.

That little badge is one of the lastlinks thllt binds her to the history andtradition of fighting ships of centuriespast. Some of the badges worn by air­craft carriers today, from whose decksnaval jet fighters roar, are the same asthose that waved over the heads ofmailed knights on the decks of mediae­val galleys. The jet fighter has replacedthe jousting fighter but the heraldicbadge lives on.

Ships of the Royal Canadian Navy,in common with ships of the Royal Navyand other navies of the British Com­monwealth, an hli\ve badges and areproud of them. Their story goes backa long way-more than 500 years.

In mediaeval England there was nonavy as we know it today, so if the King

wanted to wage war he couldn't callout his navy-he didn't have one. Allhe could do was to hire a number oftough little merchant ships, completewith their crews, and turn them intofighting men-of-war. A small catapultmounted amidships, some stout timberstructures in the bow and stern, knownas fore and after castles, and the trans­formation is about complete.

"Now," says the King to his trustyhenchmen Lord Feernot and BaronNeverdye, "sweeI? me these scurvyknaves from the seas"! These twohearties bow low and clang shut theirvisors-but "Gadzooks!" they're now asalike as two peas in a pod! . Feernot, aflorid fellow, looks exactly the Same asNeverdye who is a sallow soul. Howwill they recognize one another in thethick of the fight? Luckily this prob­lem had arisen years before, so overtheir suits of armour they wear loosefitting coats that bear the heraldicmarks of their noble houses. Thesefamily "trademarks" were also paintedon their shields and on the standardsthey carried in battle. Now, in spiteof the monotonous steel faces they allwear, all gentlemen in a coat of armourknow each other as friend or foe-letvarlets fall where they may!

When they sallied forth afloat theytook all this colourful personal identifi­cation with them. The dowdy littlemerchantman was now a gaily decora­ted fighting ship and her'aldry had cometo sea. There it has remained in oneform or another right up to the presentday.

W HEN THE KING came into anavy of his own the style in

heraldic decoration of ships changed.Instead of the personal devices of theindividual captains and their men, it be­came customary to display the arms andbadges of the King. Henry VIII was asfond of heraldry as he was of wives. Hereversed the usual procedure of fittingthe badge to the ship and called' a .number of his ships after badges he hadinherited from a long line of ancestors.The best known of these ships are theGreyhound, Antelope, Unicorn, andDragon. Oddly enough these names havesurvived the centuries and still appeartoday in the pages of Jane's FightingShips. One of tnem-Unicorn--is thename of the naval division in Saskatoon.

ships were perfect places for the flowerygilt carved work that was'a sign of thetimes. The bold and simple heraldicdesigns were cluttered with cupids andflowers; fauns chased scantily-cladmaidens around the gunwales underthe eyes of heavily-bearded patriarchs.

When wood and sail gave way to steeland steam even the prancing satyrs dis­appeared and little decoration of anykind, heraldic or otherwise survived ex­cept the ship's figurehead. Within thememory of living men the last figure­head in the navy was worn by HMSSwiftsure. When she was hauled off tothe breaker's yard only the significantlittle badges on the quarterdeck re­mained. Enter the modern age--exitromance!

Before the First World War there waslittle or no official control over the kindof badge a ship might wear. If her cap­tain or any other officer or man' couldsuggest a design, it was accepted andworn. In some of His Majesty's Shipsthere was much head scratching andprobably a little recourse to inspira­tional tonics when badges were to be de­signed. From one such session HMSSportive's officers came up with a pic­ture of a butting goat to decorate theirship. HMS Tormentor's designers adop­ted a flea magnified a thousand timesand HMS Noble hit the jack-pot in badpuns with the picture- of a cow (nobull). The poor naval officer trying tofind designs to fit names like Obdurate,Attentive or Hasty really needed thecomfort of a good stiff drink!

Inquisitive people who asked the Cap­,tain of HMS Onslaught why his shipwore a single bulrush as a badge always

got the stock reply: "Well, damme, if a'bull-rush' i::jn't an 'onslaught', what is?"When you look at it that way the gameof thinking up badges was just likeplaying "handles" on paper.

When the flurry of the war had dieddown My Lords Commissioners of theAdmiralty put their collective foot downand decided to put badge design on anofficial basis. They reco,iled in well­bre~ horror at what some nautical witmight do for ships with names likeBacchus, BtLstler or Pincher. Theirobject was to restore the true principlesof heraldic art among ships of the fleetrather than let ships' badges decline intoridiculous ribaldry-and they succeeded100 per cent.

U NTIL the Second World WarCanada's Navy consisted of only a

few ships big enough to have badgesdesigned for them. There wasn't much

point in hiring a professional artist todo the job, so it was left up to the cap­tains of the ships to make their ownarrangements. The badges producedwere quite good but just to make surethey were fully recognized as Canadianships, they plastered their designs withmaple leaves. This was really gildingthe lily, as though names like Ottawa,Saguenay and Skeena weren't Canadianenough.

The war put a very different complex­ion on things. Instead of a few shipsthere were hundreds. All of them weremanned by enthusiastic young men whowanted the world to know that theirship had a badge as good as any afloat.They knew the principles of the gamebut they certainly weren't going to stickto the rules! It didn't matter if theywere right or wrong, artistic or other­wise. They weren't going to do anysocial cruising or issue engraved invita-

tions on which the badge might appear,so "force on-regardless" was the cry.Some of the results were amusing andvery clever.

There wasn't a ship in- the service thatdidn't have a "mess-deck Michaelangelo"tucked away somewhere. Out came thepaint pots and brushes and in no timeat all Mickey Mouse, Pluto; _DonaldDuck and a lot of characters that Disneynever heard of were plastered over thegun shields and bridges of almost everyship in the fleet. Donald Duck's palswere popular with some, but other shipshad other ideas. HMCS St. Clair hada picture of that saint blasting a U-boatwith lightning flashing from her finger­tips, the Lockeport showed her skipperturning the key on a prison full of Nazisand the St. Laurent, known to all mate­lots as "Sally Rand", had a picture ofthat lovely in "working rig" knockingdown Jap and German dive bomberswith her fan. Who' said the principlesof heraldry were dead? They were verymuch alive, even if. the execution wasa bit rough.

One sturdy little corvette displayed abadge that was the pride of her ship'scompany but rather difficult to explainto the ladies. On her gun shield wasdrawn a large playing card, the Queenof Hearts to be exact. She wasn't theconventional Queen of Hearts but a fairyoung thing in short skirts falling sternfirst into a puddle of water. The ship'sname?-Wetaskiwin.

In 1945, when pl~.ns were being madefor the post-war Canadian fleet, theNaval Staff decided that those ships re­maining in service should have badgesreasonable enough to display in foreignwaters and inoffensive on· a Christmas

- card sent to the local bishop. The de­cision wasn't easy to make and it wasmore difficult to enforce. A very defi­nite group of young officers maintainedthat some of the ships had carried theircartoon pictures through some tough en­counters in the North Atlantic' shippinglanes and wanted to keep them fo~' sen­timental 'reasons. Those Bugs Bunnycharacters, they maintained, were well­known wherever sailors gathered. Theopposite camp said that lVIickey lVIouseand Co. were fine in wartime but thatthe ,piping days of peace demanded alittle more grace and dignity. Graceand dignity won, but not without astruggle.

T HE TASK of producing the initialdesigns was placed in the very

capable hands of Lt.-Cdr. (SB) AlanB. Beddoe, OBE, now retired, an expertin the field of heraldic design and anaccomplished artist. That magnificentilluminated manuscript known as the"Book of Remembrance" that rests inthe Peace Tower on Parliament Hill inOttawa is one of his best-known works.

There was more to the job than metthe eye. First the history behind thename of the ship had to be traced. Thisinvolved considerable research intoCanadian Indian lore, English, Frenchand Scots history and biography andsome deep delving into early Canadianwritings. Before he started a design,Lt.-Cdr. Beddoe. spent weeks in tirelessresearch just to make sure that his factswere absolutely riJ?:ht.

During the Second World War, HMCS Nia·gara was ,a four-stacker destroyer. Today thename is borne by the 'RCN establishment inWashington, D.C. The ship's badge has aninternational motif, with a star for the U.S.and maple leaf for Canada on either side ofthe vertical wavy lines representing NiagaraFalls.

Among some of our native Indianplace names he encountered trouble.One authority would state a wordmeant "the place of fishing", anotherthat it stood for "where the river forks".When he had sorted out the muddleand finally discovered what the namereally did mean, he produced a designincorporating the outstanding featuresof the name or of the story behind it.

While many of the badges have theirtheme in English or French history, thenative Canadian touch has never beenlost sight of and some of the designsnow used are striking examples of howIndian motifs can be adapted to theconventional requirements of heraldry.To date Alar). Beddoe has produceddozens of badges for ships and estab­lishments of the RCN. They were mas­terpieces in miniature and a credit tohim and the Service.

A lovely spring flower, whose existenceimperilled by hordes of city-dwellers whodescend on the woods and gather it by thearmful, forms the design of the cruiser On­tario's badge. The trillium is Ontario's pro­vincial flower.

From the final drawings patternsare made in aluminum (formerly inwood) 'from which copies of the badgeare cast in bronze for the ship and herboats. Enamelled in bright coloursthey make a very pretty touch in anotherwise drab setting of battleshipgrey. Each one coming from the foun­dry marks another step in the "newlook" in Canadian ships' badges. Witheach badge goes a motto, a list of battlehonours and a history of former shipsof the same name. In theSt. Laurent badge, imposed on the white whalesymbolic of the St. Lawrence River where thesecreatures abound, is a grid. The third centurySt. Lawrence was roasted alive on a grid andis said to have taunted his persecutors withthe words: "I am roasted on this side; turnme over and eat."

The choice of mottoes is left up tothe captains of the individual ships.Latin has long been a favourite becauseof its brevity but they range from Latinthrough English, French, Gaelic, Greekand Indian to amplify the pictures theymatch. The most effective mottoesusually bear some very close referenceto either the badge or name of the ship-or both.

Several mottoes of ships of the RoyalNavy will 'give an idea of what mightbe forthcoming. The badge of HMSEclipse is the sun being eclipsed by themoon, her motto is "Numquam"(Never); HMS Tactician whose badgeis a chessboard carries the motto"Checkmate" and HMS Sterling whichbears the monetary sign of the PoundSterling as a bad~e has "Good as Gold",a motto obviously chosen long beforethe advent of hard currency areas!

As much as they were enjoyed in daysgone by, it is hardly likely that Plutoand his cartoon pals will ever againdecorate the ships of the Royal Cana­dian Navy. The style has now definitelybeen set for the graceful little badgesthat will adorn the quarterdecks ofCanadian ships through the ,years tocome. Artistically they are smart, her­aldically they are correct and they havea meaning, background and tradition ofwhich every man in the Service canwell be proud.-P.C.

Pictou Islcinders, 30 miles off the northern Nova Scotia coast trom New Glasgow, snow-boundand ice-bound at one stage of the long, hard East Coast winter, found themselves running short of'medical supplies and for a three-week period were without mail. ATLANTIC COMMAND

VU 32 SquadronBowing to the inevitable in November

1952, all squadrons of the Royal Cana­dian Navy assumed the cloak of uni­formity with. its neighbours to the southand adopted American-style pseudo­nyms. Thus 743 Squadron, which up tothat time had been the Fleet Require­ments Unit, and a part of No.1 TrainingAir Group, became known as VU 32.

Stationed and labelled for all theworld to see as a "Naval Utility" squad­ron, VU 32 is kept constantly busy mak­ing itself useful to the Navy. Equippedwith Avenger aircraft, its primary roleis providing air training for observersand observer's mates on course at theObserver School. This accounts forabout 250 pilot hours each month, ofwhich most are spent making radar runson the long-suffering Sambro lightship.

VU 32's secondary role appears, tothe casual spectator, to be in direct com­petition with TCA. Flights to Montreal,Ottawa. and all stations west are of

common occurrence, and although theamenities and the comfort of an Aven­ger may compare unfavourably withthose of a North Star, there are suffi­cient advantages to overcome anyqualms that the passenger may feel.

Other roles in which VU 32 confirmsits versatile and utilitarian reputationare providing formation fly-pasts forNavy Days or civic functions, workingwith the Army through No. 1 GroundLiaison Group and in providing aircraftfor the Ground Observer Corps to spoton their sporadic spotting week end.

Last, but by no means least of VU32's accomplishments, is that, of provid­ing the cleanest hangar on the stationfor divisions (on damp or cold days)and for the children's Christmas party,and that of providing, on more than oneoccasion, a higher percentage of blooddonors and bond buyers than any othersquadron-J. HMCS Wallaceburg ,The Wallaceburg had her refit at

Pictou, N.S., and the rust and verdigristhat covered the .ship were. mute evi-

dence of. her inactivity. However, theship, with other members of coastal es­cort squadron eleven, has now begun abusy spring and summer of trainingcruises.

Many members of the ship's companywent on leave but those remaining tookpart in various sports in the area withhockey and basketball being most popu­lar. The hockey team fared well andwent undefeated in its games up to thetime of writing.

The people of Pictou were veryhospitable and provided opportunitiesfor the ship's company to take part inlocal activities. This is the third yearthat the Wallaceburg has been in refitin Pictou and the ship, and her officersand men found themselves among oldfriends.

ABCD SchoolThe ABCD School at Stadacona got

figure-conscious and reported that 1,475officers, cadets and men had successfullypassed courses during 1955. Also duringthat period 3,300 respirators were issuedand the recipients underwent instructionin their use and care, and had an oppor­tunity to test them in the gas chamber.

A new addition to the school hasbrought nearly 200 officers and men oncourse during recent months as well asa large number of "goofers". The addi­tion is a stability model of the St.Laurent class destroyer 'escort. Themodel demonstrates the ",nusual sta­bility of the new DEs.

The year 1956 started Well and to datemore than 300 officers and men havetaken courses.

HMCS CornwallisThe dreariness of winter was forgot­

ten for one evening at least when Corn­wallis was entertained by a group oftalented amateurs in the "Blue SkyReview". The troupe comes fromMontreal and have been giving top­drawer shows to servicemen and hos­pitals across Canada for seven years.

These young people give their talentsfree of charge In order to get stage ex­perience and at the same time assist inraising funds for worthy causes. InCornwallis the proceeds of a silver col­lection went to the RCN BenevolentFund.

Finish­ing his RN time here, and the only RNrate on loan to Naval Aviation, is CPOT. L. "Sharky" Ward, still flying andadding to his 2100 hours in the air. Also,on the staff are CPO Robert Hogg, POJoe Bonneau and Ldg. Sea. George Merk­ley. PO Kenneth Bullock replaced CPOMills in charge of the observer's matesin VS 881, then preparing to embark inthe Magnificent.

In the process of qualifying is No. 10Observer Course and No. 9 Observer'sMate Trade Group II; the latter weredue to get their wings at the end ofMarch.

HMCS IroquoisFollowing a prolonged winter refit the

Iroquois girded herself for a busy opera­tional year., During the lengthy hom~ port staythe crew managed to retain a keen edgeof interest not only in sports but in otheractivities as well. Many men took ad­vantage of the period to qualify them­selves for promotion and advancementand to this end seamanship and ABCDqualifying classes were held.

Major personnel changes took placeover the past few months with manygoing ashore for advanced courses andothers to the beach for a short respitefrom continuous sea duty.

The Iroquois ran roughshod over mostof her competitors in sports and endedthe season with an overtime tie with the"Maggie" in hockey for the Inter-ShipHockey Championship. In this the Iro­quois was beaten only once, and de­feated her opponents in ten games ofwhich five were shutouts.

A ship's company dance before sailingfor exercises in the sunny south was atremendous success. Headed by CPOMort Keeler, the cox'n, and with an ex­cellent floor show MC'd by CPO DennyShaw, the dance had a full turn-out ofship's personnel.

Ordnance Training CentreThe winter passed quietly in the Ord­

nance Training Centre. Armourer'sMates classes No. 16 and 17 are gradu­ally reaching the end of their course.

The second group of Armourer's Ap­prentices arrived from the Cape Bretonand are hard at work on their ordnancecourse; they are Able Seamen BruceSquires, Andrew Black and DennisGordon.

The Ordnance Training Centre didvery well in interpart sports during thewinter, finishing in the top four in allevents in which they competed. Because

of the limited number of personnel allevents could not be entered.

The ordnance trials teams composedof Lieut. Gordon W. Clarke and CPO

.William Renaud has been very busywith trials commitments both in Hali­fax and in Saint John, N.B.

The ordnance personnel for the Bona­venture are gradually getting underwayfor Ireland. Those who have alreadyleft are CPO James Haywood, CPOGordon Clare, PO William Gillespie andPO James Cavanagh. Torpedo Anti-Submarine SchoolThe emphasis, on the training at the

TAS School has shifted to senior ranks,now that the gap in the lower ranks isclosing.

Some new equipment is being instal­led, including new attack table, an AjSmortar complete with loading arrange­ments, and torpedoes. Members of theinstructional staff find themselves tak­ing conversion courses to prepare forthe new equipment.

The school entered two bowling teams,one volleyball, one basketball and onehockey team in the winter "Cock of theBarracks" contest. The hockey teamhas been most successful with a recordof three wins and one tie in'four games.

PACIFIC COMMAND

HMCS VentureThe half way mark of another suc­

cessful year at Venture, Canada's JuniorNaval Officer Training Establishment,was reached late in January when 80cadets embarked in the Ontario andSioux. For 29 of them, the Juniors, thiswas ,their first taste of a big ship. Com­pared with the sailing of cutters,whalers and even the 97~foot ketchOriole this was truly a "deep sea" affair.During the two~month cruise to Japanvia San Francisco. and Pearl Harbourthey served in the Ontario, workingpad-ship alongside the very men theyone day will lead and command.

~on. Ralph Cam.pney, Minister.of National Defence, takes the salute at Royal Roads on theoccas,?n of the meehng of the adVIsory board of the Canadian Services Colleges. At his right isCaptain. J. A. Ch~r1es, college commandant. The advisory board is made up of the deputy minister,the ~halrman, Ch,efs of Staff, the Chiefs of Stoff of the three armed services, the chairman of theDefence Research Board, representatives of the provinces and of the ex-cadet clubs of the threecolleges. The meeting this year coincided with the inter-college tournc;lment February 23 and 24 atRoyal Roads.

The Seniors, 28 of whom are executivecadets and 23 air-executives turned to anew phase of training. Having painted,chipped rust and scrubbed their fairshare on earlier cruises, they now spendmost of their time mastering the art ofnavigation and learning first-hand theresponsibilities and duties of the Officerof the Watch. In groups of 20, theymoved into the Sioux for a two-weekstay and thus were introduced to lifein a Fleet destroyer escort.

While the so-called "lucky first cruis­ers" navigate their way by sun, moonand stars across the vast Pacific andbronze themselves 'in the tropics, theircolleagues ashore, some 42 juniors and54 seniors, were studying hard for theirmid-term tests in late March. Thesecompleted successfully, they will be offto sea while the others come ashore foran identical half-term in classroom andgym, on sportsfield and parade ground.

Those left ashore find life very pleas­ant, for instead of the usual 176 thereare only 96. Studies go well and so dosports. From these .96 boys Venturefields each week in Inter-Island compe­titions, a soccer team, two English Rug- '.gel' XVs and a basketball side, all ofwhom are invariably successful. Skiingparties go off to the hills each weekendand boxing, like sailing and rowing, isregularly catered for.

The 54 seniors now ashore are madeup of 12 Supply Branch, 19 Engineersand 23 Executive-Air. This last groupspends two full days each week at PatBay Airport flying the 85 hp Fleet Can­ucks. Final tests,dual and solo cross­country flights and "A" licences them­selves are just around the' corner formost of the cadets.

All Venture cadets are proud of theirbranch. In August when juniors areready to go on long summer leave aftertheir first full year of training,. they aredivided up into four branches, viz.Executive, Executive-Air, Engineeringand Supply. This selection is basedupon. both their general and specificacademic ability, their medical category,the results of aptitude tests and last, butnot least, their own wishes in the mat­ter. Once he's in a branch, a juniorgoes on leave, puts away his lanyard­symbol of his freshman status-and re­turns a month later a fully fledgedsenior.

When the next year has been com­pleted, the cadets are promoted to mid­shipmen and go .their several ways. Theexecutive-air cadets go to Pensacola,Florida, where they take a full year'sflying training with the United StatesNavy, deck landings included. The

executives go to Halifax and spend ap­proximately nine months on sub-lieu­tenants' courses (gunnery, torpedo-anti­submarine, communications etc.) beforejoining the fleet.

The engineers first serve three monthson the coast in various ships of the fleetbefore taking passage to England thefollowing January. They' join HMSThunderer, the engineering trainingestablishment near Plymouth and in twobusy years qualify themselves very fullyin aU branches of engineering service.

The cadets (S) spend six months atsea in ships on either coast gaining prac­tical experience and then go to theSupply School at Hochelaga, in Mon­treal, for their supply officer technicalcourses.

These schemes of further trainingconcern the cadets only after they havegraduated successfully from Venture onAugust 15. First the academic year hasto be completed!

With the second cruise sailing in theOntario and Sioux towards the end ofMarch. for 7 to 8 weeks in tbe WestIndies, it isn't long before all cadets areback ashore and settled down for thefinal ten-week half-term throughoutJune and July, leading up to the bigmoment-graduation!

Judging by the quality of the cadetsashore and afloat right now, graduationis going to be a great success. Thesefuture leaders have the will and theknowledge to succeed at whatever theydo. A better compliment to the Royal

Canadian Navy and to the wholeDominion of Canada would be hard tofind.-D.J.W.

CANMlNRON2After year-end leave periods, the Co­

mox and James Bay, in company, car­ried out minesweeping operations. inthe waters around the southern end ofVancouver Island. At the end of Janu­ary the two ships carried out naviga­tion trials in Saanich Inlet.

February saw the Fortune out of re­flt and the squadron sailed to the northof Vancouver Island, carrying out mine­sweeping en route. Stops were madeat Alert Bay and Por~ Hardy, wherethe ships' companies were challengedarid badly beaten by local basketballteams.

The squadron paid an operationalvisit to Vancouver from February 17to 20 and, as always, enjoyed the warmhospitality llccorded the RCN.

PO Allan Bennett was drafted to theCommunication Training Centre, Naden,in January. He was one of the lastremaining members of the ship's com­pany which commissioned Comox onApril 2, 1954.

Communication Training CentreA great improvement in gentility was

noted at the Communication' TrainingCentre during the presence of fouryoung ladies from HMC Dockyard whowere taking a two-week crypto course.

The halls and classrooms of the CTCare now bright and cheerful after ashort period of chaos caused by a paint­ing crew. Nothing escaped their eagleeyes and brushes.

PO J. R. Sully, on CND from Tecum­seh, was an addition to the staff, alongwith CPO L. E. Sheppard, who arrivedfrom Sussexvale.

March saw the Centre preparing tostart the summer training period. A CV2qualifying course is in progress at thepresent time with a CR2 class com­mencing towards the end of the month.Instructors for these Trade Group Twoclasses are CPO L. E. Sheppard and POC. R. Miller.

With spring in the air, CTC is begin­ning to sharpen its claws for the vari­ous sports. It boasts enthusiasts in golf,fishing, curling and bowling.

Of interest to all is the newly-formedPacific Coast Communication Associa­tion. Approval was received recentlyfrom the Flag Officer Pacific Coast toform such an association. Its aim isprimarily to promote social activitiesbut it is felt that it will further theesprit de CO'l:pS within the department.

It is run entirely by men of the com­munication department and all membersof the communication branch and civil­ians employed on communication dutiesin the command are eligible for mem­bership.

Charter officers of the Association are:President, PO A. D. Ireland; vice-presi­dent, PO C. D. Fitch; second vice-presi­dent, Ldg. Sea. G. D. Blackhall; secre­tary-treasurer, CPO L. E. Sheppard.

TAS Training Centre

Recent changes in staff at the Tor­pedo Anti-Submarine Training Centrewere: Lieut. (TAS) J. C. T. Belcher leftto join the Assiniboine on commission­ing; Lieut. (TAS) F. G. Henshaw joinedfrom the Toronto; PO P. A. Bernard leftfor a leadership course in Cornwallis.

During February the following classeswere under instruction: two classes ofTD2s, 18 men; two classes of TD3s, 17

men and one class of six RCN (R)officers.

Sea training exercises for TAS classesand ships' TAS teams were carried outin Ste. Therese, Stettle1' and Digby withUSS Queenfish between the latter partof February and early March. RCAFaircraft from Pat Bay joined for tacticalexercises during part of this period.

NAVAL DIVISIONS

HMCS Star

The reserve recruiting drive at Star,the Hamilton naval division, waslaunched in the grand manner whenMayor Lloyd D. Jackson, of Hamilton,assisted by Cdr. J. H. Curtis, Star's com­manding officer, hoisted the signal fiagsthat spelled out "Go Navy" on Hamil­ton's venerable city hall.

The drive started rather slowly, butgathered speed in the latter part ofFebruary and, by popular request, thelocal campaign extended beyond theofficial closing date of March 13 to theend of March with gratifying results.­F.T.B.

HMCS Queen Charlotte

Captain J. J. Connolly, RCN (R)(Ret'd), and CPO S. G. Bowles, retired,were presented with life membershipsto the Chief and Petty Officers' Mess atQuee1t Charlotte. Captain Connolly wasthe commanding officer of the Charlot­tetown division at the time the firstChief and POs' Mess was formed andit was due to his untiring efforts thiswas made possible. CPO Bowles wasthe RCN Recruiter at Queen Charlottebefore retirement.

The mess held its first meeting of 1956to elect a new slate of officers, with thefollowing results:

CPO L. A. Llewellyn, president; CPOW. R. Morton, vice-president, and CPOR. A. McMiUan, secretary-treasurer.

The mess entertained the commandingofficer and officers of Queen Charlotteat an informal post-New Year's recep­tion. Their hospitality was reciprocatedwhen the CO and officers were hosts to

the chief petty officers and petty officersin the wardroom.

Ldg. Wren Catherine MacNeill hasreturned from nearly two years of CNDservice. During that time she served inCornwallis, Stadacona and Shearwater.

Ldg. Sea. Frank Taylor has gone tothe United Kingdom to stand by theBonaventure. '

PO E. R. Campbell is serving in theOntario while taking his Naval Trainingon the West Coast.

Ldg. Sea. Joseph F. Flynn transferredfrom the RCN (R) to the RCN and haschosen to serve on the West Coast.

Among the new entries are Ord. Sea.John K. Profit and Ord. Sea. Donald(Duck) Trainor. The latter is a boxerof some repute and will representQueen Charlotte in future naval boxingtournaments.

HMCS York

VC 920, York's reserve air squadron,is all set for the biggest year yet in 1956.Operational-wise and training-wise,Canada's oldest reserve naval air squad­ron will enter its third year withplenty to do.

Among other things, older pilots arelooking forward to weekend trainingtrips to the East Coast and maybe asfar west as Calgary.

The junior pilots, sub-lieutenants (A)and midshipmen (A), have a lot ofreally hard work ahead of them quali­fying for solo in the Avengers. Thismeans at least 50 hours flying time be­fore they can make the qualifying at­tempt.

While everyone wiII be busy at an­nual training in Shearwater this sum­mer, doubtless all squadron memberswiII want more time out to see RCN'snew aircraft, particularly the Banshees.

But before the treat of summer train­ing comes VC 920's way, there's lots ofweekend flying, ground instruction andThursday night class room procedure.

One of the newer ground instructionalduties is aircraft and ship recognition.As far as known, this is the first courseof this type offered in the Reserve sincethe last war.-J.H.

That venera.ble old sport played withbroom and stone on a sheet of ice ap­pears to have taken the Navy-estab­lishments, fleet and divisions-by storm.

Curling, in the past season, gatheredmany naval adherents and not only didthey compete in interpart and intershipplay but also they entered provincialand Dominion 'spiels, matching rockswith the best rinks in Canada.

Sporadically through the years navalpersonnel had curled on occasion, butsuddenly at the beginning of last seasonthe game caught the sailors' fancy. Asthe season wore on word trickledthrough from various divisions that ac­tive groups were avidly taking the lure.Ships in the fleet, not to be outdonefollowed suit. So has Headquarters.

Curlers in the Atlantic Commandattended provincial bonspiels and evencompeted in the Macdonald Brier atMoncton. At the other side of thecontinent a Navy team walked off withthe second event in the Victoria Com­mercial Bonspiel and four Navy teamsmade successful showings in the BritishColumbia Brier before being eliminatedby the best rinks in the province.

Cornwallis Keeps-Championship

Cornwallis retailled the Atlantic Com­mand Hockey Championship in thethree-day playoffs held at Cornwallisin mid-MarCh. Cornwallis defeated theHU7'on 17 to 5 in the final, and Shear­water won the consolation final witha 2-0 win over the Cape Breton.

Nine teams from ships and establish­ments in the command were enteredand the Cornwallis team defeated Shear­water 5-0 in the first round, and Stad­acona 3-0 in the semi-finals. Here arethe results of the games in the semi­finals of the championship contests:Wallace burg 5, Granby 4; Cornwallis3, Stadacona 0, and Huron 7, WaHace­burg 3.

Among the tournament highlights:Johnson and Morton, Cornwallis and

Shearwater goalies, both posted twoshut-outs and, ironically, both allowedfive goals in their third games.

Catamqui edged a hard - fightingRCEME Kingston squad 60-58 to winthe final end of the two-game GarrisonLeague basketball championships by atotal margin of 16 points.

The victory was achieved in thenaval division's court March 16. Thereserve sailors were champions lastyear, too.

BadmintonTitles Decided

The Atlantic Command badmintonchampionships were decided at a tour­nament held at Stadacona, with thehome club host to entries from Scotian,Shearwater and ships.

Lt.-Cdr. R. J. McClymont, Shear­water, won the men's single champion­ship and Mrs. Hilda Manning, Stada­cona, won the ladies' singles title.

The men's doubles went to UNTDCadets Innes Christie and JohnsonMont, both of Scotian. The ladies'doubles was won by the team of Mrs.Manning and Mrs. Hilda Treherne,Stadacona. Lt.-Cdr. (S) Thomas Tre­herne and wife, Stadacona, won themixed doubles.

The Stadacona club had a success­ful season this winter and played tour­naments with Lunenburg, Liverpool,Bridgewater and the Halifax GarrisonClub.

A highlight of the East Coast Navy'scurling season was the Atlantic Com­mand bonspiel sponsored by the RCNCurling Club (Halifax) and played atthe Mayflower rink February 16 and 17.

Shearwater MakesUp for Slow Start

In Nova Scotia's Armed Forces HockeyLeague, Shearwater made a slow startbut finding the atmosphere in the cellardistasteful, put on a spurt that had themundefeated in the last six games.

This lifted them to third place in thesix-team loop, to finish with six wins,five losses and four ties, behind Stada­cona and RCAF Greenwood. The Shear­water "goals against" record was thebest in the league-64 in 15 games foran avr..rage of 4·27.

Naviators led in the playoffs againsta strong Greenwood squad two games toone, but then lost a heartbreaker. Theywere deadlocked -through two ten-min­ute overtime periods, but the "lightblues" scored after 16 minutes hadpassed in a 20-minute sudden-deathframe. This contest was too much forthe Shearwater crowd, who dropped thenext two despite creditable showings.

Royal Military College suffered twodefeats in athletics early in March, butgained a victory on the debating floorwhen they met their friendly "enemies"from the United States Military Acad­emy, West Point, in annual three-partcompetition.

The West Pointers chalked up a 3-2hockey victory and scored 1,370 pointson the pistol range. RMC scored 1,203while RCMP marksmen walked offwith 1,320 points.

The Canadians scored their single vic­tory in a debate against a two-manWest Point team who supported theresolution: "The engineer has made amore significant contribution to modernsociety than the arts man".

InternationalShoot for Sea Cadets

Sea Cadets of at least nine countrieswill take part in a new annual Inter­national Small Bore Rifle Competitionsponsored by the Navy League of Can­ada.

According to the Navy League, Aus­tralia, Rhodesia, South Africa, Scot­land, Wales, Ireland, England and NewZealand will take part, along with Can­ada, and further entries from Swedenand other countries, including those ofthe Commonwealth and Empire, areanticipated.

Organized to commemorate the 1955Diamond Jubilee of the Navy League

of Canada, the new International RifleContest will be judged by the Dominionof Canada Rifle Association, to whomtargets and score sheets of the threetop teams in each country are to besubmitted each year.

Standard 20-yard DCRA targets willbe used and these, with contest rules,will be distributed by the Navy Leagueof Canada to all contestants. The· 22calibre small-bore rifle, -as issued inthe different countries, will be standardfor the competition.

The International Competition is opento any Sea Cadet unit or Corps. SeaCadets participating must bJ within 14to 18 years of age, inclusive and noSea Cadet may be a member of morethan one participating team. All shootsmust be supervised, with properly ac­credited observers.

Sports are often the keywhich opens the door to goodwill andthe best in human relations betweenpeople of different countries.

The naval officer has to be an "allrounder". The ace hockey player maybe an asset to his ship, his navy andhis country when he's alongside inI-Ialifax, Nova Scotia, but he's dead­weight in Mombassa, Sydney or Ville­fr~nche if his accomplishments are lim­ited to this one sport.

T HE CHOICE of Samuel Eliot Mor­ison to write the History of U.S.

Naval Operations in World War II wasindeed a happy one. Up' to the present,Professor Morison has produced 10 vol­umes of his 14-volume history and all10 have been distinguished by theirreadability, by brilliant portrayals ofoutstanding events and by the evidententhusiasm of the historian for'the jobat hand.

Volume X, "The Atlantic BattleWon", is but lately off ~he press. Itcovers the last two years of' the warand is the. continuation of Volume I,"The Battle of the Atlantic", whichd~alt with' the period, Septem.ber 1939to May 1943. .

It's a good bet that Professor Mori~

son found these two volumes hardestof all to 'put together. He himself says,in his preface to Volume X: "It wasan exceedingly complicated war, fascin­ating to technicians and professionalsailormen;but exceeding~y difficult tonarrate in the scope of two volumes."He adds, "I cannot neglect the superbwork. performed in this theatre by ourAllied Navies and Air Forces, althoughit' is obviously impossible to relate themin the same detail as, our own."

Nevertheless, he departs from thescript in several places to describe in­cidents in which the U.S. Navy wasnot involved. For example, he relatesin some detail, and with the aid of amap, "The Ordeal of ONS-5", one ofthe fiercest convoy battles of the warand a 'turning point in the Battle of

The story has found a ·wide public,both as a book and in serialized form,and many readers must have already

down into 19 main chapters. Chapter 1is an introduction and is really a syn­opsis of Volume 1. Chapters 2, 3 and4 have to do with organization, newships and aircraft and, training andtechnical developments. Chapter 5 pre­sents the enemy side of the picture, andthe remainder of the book is taken upmostly with operations. Among thehighlights are his descriptions of U.S.escort carrier operations. These groups,once they got into the swing of things,had marked success against the U­boats. They sank more than 50 sub­marines, while, losing only on~ carrier,one destroyer and two DEs.

While the book is mostly devoted,and properly so, to the part played bythe U.S. Navy, Professor Morison givesfull marks to the RN and RCN, evento the extent of saying, in his closingchapter, that "... we must candidlyadmit that the Royal Navy, the RoyalCanadian Navy and 'the Coastal Com­mand of the Royal 'Air Force, actingunder Admiralty supervision, contri­buted more to the destruction of theenemy submarine fleet than did theUnited States Navy and the UnitedStates Army Air Force."-R.C.H.

I UNDERTOOK this review on the'principle that one must set a thief

to catch a thIef: Alistair MacLean wasa torpedoman and served five years inthe Royal Navy, I was a radar operatorand served six. In general, I considerthe book hardly a compliment to agreat service. At first sight thisis not'apparent, because the author brings theseamen to life in a manner :ql.ost con­vincing. The ship comes to life too,both as a sea boat fighting heavyweather and a bitter enemy, and asa living organization.

Apart from the vitality of the shipand her lo"wer deck, the novel hasmany shortcomings. In fact, it is notreally a novel, but an anthology oflegends that circulated in the, RoyalNavy during the Second World War,and I met many old friends amongthem. In particular, the incident ofthe damaged flight deck is familiar,but, .in ihe story I heard, the deck ofa Woolworth's carrier was bent backand upwards for ten feet or so by therepeated attacks of a heavy gale, notdoubled back to the bridge by a singlesea.

I have said that the seamen are· cred­ible,but that is true only of theirmanner and character. When theirbehaviour is considered, the exaggera­tion which perm~ates the whole work

. tends to remove them from the ·:fieldof credibility-if only by their actionsnot jibing with established characters.And there is one notorious exception:Ralston. He is the nearest approachto a hero in the story, and, be it noted,he is a tOfpedoman-perhaps the ideal­ized MacLean. He always turns upwhere a torpedoman or a -cool head isurgently needed, and he is always in­furiatingly right. Because 'he is soright he is persecuted by an Incompe­tent sub-lieutenant, and when ques­tioned or opposed by a senior he alwaystalks back in a manner that wouldne'ver be toler'ated. So he goes on,bearing a heavy load of grief; withoutfaltering, to a heroic, death.

The ratings ring true, but the offi­cers do not. The author has, no ideahow they should address. one another:in the Royal Navy, no one is addressed

as "Lieutenant" or "Admiral", but al­ways by name, with or. without therank, for a junior, or as "Sir" for asenior. But in Ulysses the officers areunaware of this custom. And amongthese officers I nlet more old friendsfroIl! lower deck folklore: the sub­lieutenal)t who hardly }{nows the sharpend from the blunt, the piratical com­mander, .the .RNR officer who is trueheart of oak, and the all-understandingcaptain.

Not content witl'l these stereotypes ashe received them from the tradition,MacLean has embroidered and exag­gerated them so that they are less con­vincing, than the bald inaccurate gen­eralizations that they were. In thefolklore, the incompetent sub-lieutenantis· merely a buffoon or a minor villain;'in HMS Ulysses, Carslake is the stuntedghost of Captain Bligh. He bungles anevolution by mere lack of seamanship,and compounds the offence· by blamingRalston whose skill reduces the conse­quences. From there, he is driven bymadness to attempt Ralston's murder.

As for the RNR officer: it is the firmbelief of British naval .ratings that aman who has been at sea for half a,'lifetime, and whose time has not beentaken up with the flannel of warshiproutine, must know something aboutship handling; but Lt-Cdr. Carrington,RNR, is too good tQ be true. He is· anoracle: if the weather looks odd theadmiral does not consult the meteoro­logical staff, lie asks Carrington wholooks at the sky to windward, ponders

the cloud formations, and prophesies­and his words are fulfilled in exact de­taiL And at the end, when the Ulyssesis sunk, a few survivors are draggedexhausted and gasping from the ArcticSea, but Carrington swarms up a ropeand over the side of the rescuing shipunaided.

Throughout the" book the officers are. contrasted with the ratings-to the dis­

advantage of the former. The menendure and work and carryon, andare stopped only by death; while theofficers, although the author treats themwith surface sympathy, fail through in­competence, disease, stress or Inadness.There are exceptions on both sides, butthis theme pervades the whole story.

In .spite of all these objections, "HMSUlysses" would still be a valid contri­bution to the literature of the SecondWorld War were it not that its back­ground and style introduce errors ofsyntax and fact that nag at the rAad_er's mind and distract him. The glar!""ing mistake is the route of the convoy;I have been able to consult no records,but I have asked a senior officer whowas concerned with the dispatching ofconvoys from Halifax throughout thewar, and he said that nothing wasknown there about the orders for shipsfor Murmansk, and that no convoy, or.part' of a convoy, was ever routed therefrom Halifax. They went to Britishports or to Iceland, and ships with car...goes for Russia were marshalled intonew convoys there. There are minorerrors too: at one point Carrington

speaks of a "block and tackle", a phrasenever heard at sea, and on the nextpage he says "a tackle", which is cor­rect.

All through the book, weather, sea,accidents, destruction, fire and humanaction are so exaggerated that theveriest landlubber must find the yarnhard to wash. As a one-time Pompeyrating, all I can say is that AlistairMacLean is swinging the lamps.

is the news that the Royal Nayy's in­struction manual, used in the trainingof engineroom artificers and mechani­cians is available at last in book form,cloth-bound and complete with illustra­tions and index.

The manual, published by the Ad­miralty and called "Naval Marine En­gineering Practice" is intended as areference work, illustrating and de­scribing the construction, operation andmaintenance of machinery for whicha marine engine room staff is ...·espon­sible. The book deals with typicalmachinery found in various classes ofships including boilers, reciprocatingmachinery, turbines, auxiliary machin­ery and internal combustion engines.

THE NAVY'S ROLE IN A LIMITED WARKorea Clear Example of the Value of Sea Power Today

T HE VALUE of sea power in a.. limited· war was thoroughly dem...onstrated in Korea where ships andaircraft of the United Nations deniedthe enemy the use of their ports, dis­rupted enemy lines of communicationand gave direct support to UN landforces.

The question has been raised in re- .cent years as to whether sea powerwould be equally effective in an atomicglobal war and this was discussed bythe First Lord of the Admiralty, Vis­count Cilcennin in an address severalmonths ago. He had this to say:

"Modern scientific developments haveplaced within reach of the fighting ser­vices new weapons of unprecedentedpower and range. Unfortunately theircost also is quite unprecedented! Theway which modern navies and armiesand air forces eat up money and man­power makes it more than ever neces-

sary to ensure that our forces arestreamlined. So we are constantlyre­viewing our plans for material andmanpower and trying to ensure thatwe get in our services only those menand those weapons that are essentialfor the tasks we must perform.

"What are these tasks? For naviesat all events they have not been changedby the introduction of all these newweapons and techniqu'es. I have oftenemphasized this in recent years, butI think it is important enough to beworth saying again. In peacetime thenavies of the Western Allies supportthe foreign policies and protect thetrade of their respective countries, andcontribute powerfully to the deterreJ;lt

'against possible agg:t;ession. In war ofa limited kind, by which I mean warthat does not directly involve the majorpowers on opposite sides, it has beenquite recently demonstrated how sea

power can entirely secure the army'slines of supply, and powerfully supple­ment the land battle whenever required.

"Korea was a clear example of this.The enemy controlled five out of sevenof the ports in the Korean peninsula,but the United Nations fleet had con­trol of the sea. As a result the Com­munists could not make any effectiveuse of their five ports.

"Naval aircraft were constantly har­assing the enemy, and naval bombard­ments supported the land fighting onmany occasions. By the use of seapower, troops were moved swiftly and .secretly and their landing behind theenemy's lines was supported by air­craft based within sight of the beaches.I-Ieavy naval guns were brought to beatat points all along the en~my coastlineand carrier-borne aircraft reached farinland to attack his installations orsupport our army troops.

A T-33 jet trainer, piloted by Lieut.J.V. Seatle and Lieut. Derek A. Prout,both of Shearwater,established a newT-33 record for· trans-Canada flight inMarch when they made the crossingfrom Vancouver to Halifax in five hours45 minutes flying time.

The previous record was five hours 59minutes set by the Navy in January ofthis year.

The pilots, on a cross-country naviga­tional flight. left Vancouver at 0916 ESTand arrived at Shem'water at 1611 EST.A one hour and ten minute fuelling stopat Lakehead airport brought the totalelapsed time for the 2,800-mile flight tosix hours 55 minutes.

the end. of it, the safety of our searoutes between North America. andWestern Europe would immediately be­come the most important factor in theconflict. If we were denied the use ofthose routes our armies would rapidlybe rendered impotent, our air forcesgrounded and our people starved. Andso far as we can see into the future itwould be quite impossible to keep thosesea routes open without a supremacyof naval power.

"So a large part of the questionwhether to invest more heavily in navalpower for war purposes hinges onwhether we envisage that a futurefull-scale war would last beyond theopening stages of all-out thermo-nu­clear exchanges. If we suppose thatthe first holocaust would be followedby an organized attempt to hit back atthe aggressor, rather than merely bydesultory fighting amid the ruins, thenwe haVe made the case for securingand retaining com!Uand of the seas."

Viscount Cilcennin quoted the ob­servation of Lord Montgomery, on thefuture role of the Navy, in which hegave his opinion that, after the firststunning blows had fallen, the naviesalone might remain undamaged andable to carryon the battle.

The field marshal had also said: "Asthings stand today, if the navies losecontrol of the seas the 'western Alliancewould have to go out of business."

"I think it is a perfectly fair con­clusion from all that I have said," theFirst Lord concluded, "that although theNavy (like the other services) must ofcourse streamline itself, it would befolly to neglect the problem of replac­ing wastage and maintaining our fight­ing strength of ships."

Flip open a book of matches onboard the cruiser Ontario and you arefaced with a reminder that everyonewho has served in the Royal CanadianNavy and its reserves has a friend onwhom he can count in time of need­The Royal Canadian. Naval BenevolentFund.

The reminder. printed on the matchbooks at the instigation of the ship'swelfare committee, reads: "Supportyour Benevolent Fund - Assign ToAssist".

The slogan is one which was takento heart by nearly 1,500 officers andmen during 1955, when they had as­signments in force from .50 cents totwo dollars.. The active assignments atthe end of December totalled 1,132 andthe donations from this sourceamounted during the year to $11.602, or40·7 per cent of all donations to theFund in 1955.

If all naval personnel. includingmembers of the RCN(R), contributedeven the minimum allotment of $6 ayear, the Fund would benefit by nearly$125,000. This amount, given duringthe present "good years" would in­crease the capital of the Fund to apoint where it would be a highly effec­tive agency should there be a slow­down in the economy.

A visit to the pay office can startthe ball rolling. All donations to theBenevolent Fund are deductible fromtaxable income and receipts are furn­ished. For those on active service. in­come deductions for up to $48 in chari­table gifts are made at the source.

"In a major war-which we all sodevoutly hope can be avoided-we haveto envisage that all the frilthtful newweapons in the modern armoury wouldbe used, and used sooner rather thanlater. As Mr. Harold MacMillan saidwhen he was Minister of Defence, 'thetempo would change dramatically'.

European Cruise"Maggie's" Longest

The cruise of the "Maggie" andfour destroyer escorts to NorthernEurope and the Mediterranean in 1955estabUshed two records for the car­rier-the longest distance steamed inone voyage. 7,596 miles. and thelongest continuous period at sea, 24days. since the ship commissioned in1948.

During the year she steamed 34.260miles. A total of 4,000 hours of flyingand 1,975 deck landings were com­pleted. In the fall cruise. the carrierand escorts also took part in twolarge NATO exercises, New BroomIV and Sea Enterprise,
