This event is free-of-charge. Catacoustic presents a talk by scholar Dr. John Powell in support of the performance of La Fête du Ruel. Powell will speak about the unique nature of this world premiere of the Baroque opera on June 4. Take a sneak peak into the political intrigue that contributed to the cancellation of this intended celebratory performance. Powell will use projected images of the opera manuscript and historic drawings of the gardens and chateau, which were renovated specially for the occasion of the king’s intended visit and opera performance. The manuscript included historic information about the original staging of the event: Guests would have strolled on the new marble terrace, danced, and explored the gardens. The oil lamps were to have been hidden in the shrubs, and the guests would have been ushered into the grotto, transformed into a theater. As night gave way to dawn, the musicians would emerge to present the main portion of the fete: Charpentier’s opera. Powell will pair the drawings with newly taken photos from his recent trip to the gardens and chateau of Ruel. This lecture will provide historical and social context for Catacoustic’s musical performance the following Saturday. The talk will be open to the public, will include Q&A, and will be free-of-charge.
