The state playoffs in soccer don’t start until February, but the Boulder Creek girls soccer team plans on being a factor.

In rolling through the Paradise Valley Pride Tournament, the Jaguars made a statement in going 4-0 and winning by a combined score of 23-0. In Saturday’s championship game they capped the event with a 7-0 shutout of Raymond Kellis.

“We’ve got an incredibly talented group this year,” first year coach Natalie Scmidtke, said. “We’re probably one of the youngest varsity teams in Arizona. We’ve only got six seniors, but I’m very confident of what we can do if we stay healthy. We want to get a championship banner raised in our gymnasium.”

Saturday’s game showcased the Jaguars passing. Kellis rarely even had possession of the ball and aside from two shots at the start of the second half never threatened offensively.

“We have a lot of club experience together and because of that we have a lot of camaraderie,” senior captain

Alexandra Elias said. “We know what to expect from each other.” Scmidtke, who coached the junior varsity the previous two seasons, also has worked with a lot of the team’s players at the club level.

“Our defense is solid and we have a phenomenal goalie,” she said. “I’m also pretty confident we’ll put a couple balls in the back of the net.”

A year ago the Jaguars went 16-5, before falling in the first round of the state tournament.

“The girls that are back feel as though they should have done better last year,” the coach said. “I know they battled some injuries, but I think we’re confident we can go further. This year the girls know the kind of talent we have. They’re confident, but not cocky. I’m sure they’ll fight tooth and nail to do better.”

The talented cast includes three under classmen who have already accepted scholarship offers. Sophomore defender Angela Boyle and midfielder Kylie Escobedo will be heading to Oklahoma to play for the Sooners soccer program while junior goalie Meghan Strang will be attending

the Air Force Academy.Escobedo is joined in the

midfield by Elias to form what the coach said will be an attacking offense.

“In the past Boulder Creek has played more of a defensive game,” Scmidtke said. “You need to have an offense that can push the ball forward. We’ve

got a pretty decent passing game even though we haven’t had a bunch of field time yet.

I like that my team isn’t afraid of physical play. If we can stay healthy we’ll be a force to be reckoned with.”

Offensively the Jaguars are expecting sophomores Shelby Stewart and Natalie Stephens to consistently apply pressure to opposing defenses.

“Shelby can play all over the place,” Scmidtke said. “That’s

actually one of the things I like overall about this team. We’re very versatile. Shelby has really good foot work. She’s got good speed and reads the field well. Natalie is a heck of a shot. She is a more physical player and isn’t afraid to go through people if she needs to.”

Escobedo said the team has all the ingredients necessary.

“Collectively we’re a really good team,” she said. “I think last year we had a lot of potential, but we weren’t focused. This year I think with coach we’re working harder and are more together.”

Up next for the Jaguars is their home opener, a 6 p.m., Tuesday matchup against North Canyon.

project. I enjoy complicated

projects.”

Kollings said design

submissions from companies

interested in doing the work

are due Dec. 14. Kollings said

she anticipates being able to

bring forwarding a

recommendation to the board

for the Jan. 23 council meeting.“From there things will go

rather quickly,” Kollings said.Kollings also added that talks

with the Maricopa County Sherriff’s Office regarding a long-term lease agreement continues and looks promising.

While the 36,500 sq. ft.

building will serve a number of functions, including housing council and HOA staff, serving as a welcome center, providing a home for law enforcement entities serving the area, classroom and meeting space, exercise rooms, banquet space as well as a performance venue among other things, there are a number of desired amenities that extend beyond the scope of what the building can provide.

To that end the Community Planning and Development Committee was tasked with prioritizing a list of potential projects that various residents have suggested would bring value to the community.

Chief Operations Officer Neal Shearer cautioned none of the projects have been approved by the board and even though extensive work has been done a lot of the efforts the committee has undergone are still in the preliminary stage.

“We’re in the middle of the football season so I thought an NFL analogy would be appropriate. We’re at the end of the first quarter. The Process is still just getting going.”

From a list of projects the group classified them in three tiers.

“The first tier are active projects that we feel can be accomplished in the first five years,” he said. “The second tier ones are outside that first five year period, while the third tier items require a broader vision. They’ll require community partnerships,

require huge pieces of land. Still, they are ones that we want kept on the radar. We should be opportunistic if opportunities come our way.”

Among the projects identified by the committee as tier one projects include:

• the utilization of 8 to 10 acres on vacant land at 46th Lane and Opportunity Way for multi-use soccer fields and other secondary amenities

• improvements to the A mph it heate r/O utdoor Civic Area in the main Community Park, improvemnts to Liberty Bell Park, which is an existing 3 acre open space area

• a new off-leash dog park

• new indoor racquetball courts connected to the Community Center

• a new area designated for outdoor games which could include horseshoes, bocce ball and shuffleboard.

In order to give the board something to seriously consider the committee asked the board to allocate up to $32,500 for Environmental Planning Group to come up with some design and cost estimates on the six potential projects.

Board member Tim Fyke said he would prefer to vote on giving the go ahead on an individual basis rather than green lighting proposals for all of the projects.

“The issue I have is the next board that comes along in four months could have a completely

different vision than what we have,” he said. “We spend a lot of money on surveys that never go anywhere. Past boards have wasted immense amounts of money which has done nothing but lined the pockets of design firms. I’d prefer we focus on projects that will get done in the next three years rather than look five years out or more.”

Board member John Balzer asked how much direction EPG would be given in coming up with a design.

“We’re looking for a price from them, but do we give them guidelines on these projects,” he asked. “In the history of the world of Anthem it seems like architects come back with design mock ups for building Disney Land. We have expectations for functionality, but I guess what I’m asking are we simply giving these people free form to design whatever they want.”

Shearer assured the board that what Anthem wants will be articulated and that both available land space and finances will be constraints.

The board passed the motion by unanimous vote. A board vote on the projects could be seen as soon as February. Shearer and president Craig Boates said he expected open houses and other such opportunities will be provided ahead of that date to get public opinion on the potential projects.

“We have a bunch of weapons,” she said. “Alexa (Yardley) is back with more experience, you’ve got Bridgette (Sabanosh). Carmen (Brown), even though she’s only a freshman, is going to be a weapon. I want to be a distributor because we have a bunch of different players that can score.”

Defensively senior Kendall Regan, who is in her second season on the varsity, will be counted on to be a leader as the lone holdover in the back from a season ago.

“I’ve got to make sure and keep it all organized on the back line,” she said. “We need to be together like a family. That’s what helped us in the long run last year.”

While her primary duty is solidifying the team’s defense Regan also takes the majority of the free kicks for the team and notes that she has a lot of promising targets to try and get the ball to.

“They’re strong and they’ve got height,” she said. “As long as I can put the ball where it needs to go I think they’ll beat the defense to the ball more times than not.”

In net the Falcons have a talent that other programs simply can’t match in senior Cassie Miller, who played for the 17-and under U.S. Developmental team in the World Cup this summer in Azerbaijan.

When Vittorio needs more offense he also has the option of playing junior Hayley DiNota in net and sending Miller in to play one of the forward spots. DiNota saw playing time in the team’s final three state playoff games, including the state final, when Miller unable to return in time from Florida, where she was training with the national team.

After splitting their first two regular season games of the season, losing to Chaparral before defeating Goldwater, the Falcons opened play in the Horizon Invitational on Monday with a 3-1 win over Apollo. On Tuesday they played Centennial (results unavailable at press time) before concluding pool play with a 6 p.m., Thursday game against Queen Creek at Reach 11 Sports Complex. The event’s semifinals and finals are set for Friday

and Saturday respectively with both matches at Horizon High School. Should Cactus Shadows reach the semifinals they would play at either 4 p.m. or 6 p.m. on Friday. The finals are at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

“We’ve got a chance to be dynamic offensively,” Vittorio said. “Last year’s team wore their emotions on their sleeves. This year’s group is a little quieter. I think the leadership is here. I just need to see it emerge.”

CACTUS SHADOWS BOYS

Tony Vos begins his fourth season at the helm for the Falcons in an unfamiliar position. A program which has consistently been a winner enters 2012-2013 looking to prove it is still in that class after struggling to an 8-8-1 record a season ago, one which saw the Falcons miss the postseason.

“We played a tough schedule last year, but that’s not an excuse,” Vos said. “We’re not used to losing. To say it was disappointing would be an understatement. I think we’ll bounce back in a big way this season. I like this group. They play well together. They’ve got a lot of speed as a group and they’re clever players. We’re young, but they understand the style I want to play.”

The Falcons coach said he has a wealth of talent offensively with the like of juniors Jonah Vittorio, Nick Jackson, Nick Hammer and Allen Luhrs.

“I took Jonah out of the back, where he played last year,” Vos said. “He’s great at attacking with either his left or right foot. He’s feisty. He thinks he can change the

game. Nick Hammer has great speed and Nick Jackson has phenomenal talent. With the ball at his feet he’s dangerous Allen is a quality finisher.”

Despite graduating 10 seniors from last season Vos doesn’t seen this group lacking in leadership.

Defensively the coach said that Michael Mizera may be the lone senior starter. He said Mizera and Bruno Rodriquez will be counted on to provide leadership and is excited about the talents of junior Kishan Patel.

“He runs cross country, so he goes all game and never seems to tire,” the coach said. “He’s good at jumping up into the play and attacking too.”

The coach said his team will focus on a series of short quick passes.

“We’re looking for a series of 10-15 yard passes, possessing the ball, rather than trying for long through passes, which are low percentage plays,” he said.

Sophomore Sam Slack will be in net for the Falcons and Vos is excited about his goalie.

“He’s really experienced and is very mature for only being a sophomore,” the coach said. “He reads the game well and has solid footwork. He got into two games last year and did a great job for us.”

Overall the coach said he likes the idea of coming into the season as somewhat of an unknown.

“I just want us to keep it simple,” he said. “Maybe we’ll stay under the radar, but I think we have the pieces to get back to the playoffs and once you’re there who knows what might happen.”

Marc Buckhout/The Foothills FocusCactus Shadows junior Jonah Vittorio and the Falcons will look to bounce back from an 8-8-1 season in 2011-2012, which saw the Cave Creek team miss the post season. The Falcons defeated Chaparral 3-2 in their season opener Friday.

STAFF REPORT

Janey’s Coffee House and Bodega in Cave Creek announces a December music line-up that features a variety of sounds including that of several Valley blues and rock legends, authentic Kentucky-style bluegrass music and much more.

Performances start at 7 p.m., unless noted. All December concerts are free with the exception of the New Year’s Eve Blues Bash, which is $15 per person.

Musical highlights include long-time Valley favorites such as the Chuck Hall Band and Hans Olson, who perform together and solo throughout the month. Other favorites include Rocket 88’s, Big Pete Pearson and Jesse McGuire, who are also slated to appear.

Janey’s, located at 6602 E. Cave Creek Road in Cave Creek, serves up food, beer, wine and spirits. For information, call 480-575-6885.

Cave Creek restaurant announces music lineup

As a small business entrepreneur Gary Pelow opened a home decorating business specializing in window and floor coverings 16 years ago in Las Vegas.

Shortly after opening, Pelow was visited by a Hunter Douglas representative and was quickly convinced to become a priority dealer due to the quality and prestige of their products. The business subsequently grew, forcing him to expand rapidly.

Simultaneously, the Las Vegas market was experiencing explosive growth in new home building and sales, nicely resulting in further growth and success of his small business.

After six year in Las Vegas, Pelow relocated to northeast Phoenix, a long-held dream, where he began building luxury custom homes, fully furnished with Hunter Douglas window coverings.

Some years later, the economy collapsed, forcing him out of the home building market. He

then opened a Hunter Douglas Showcase Showroom.

Last year he decided it was time to grow his business further. Instead of finding a second building Pelow decided a mobile showroom would be the most efficient choice.

The shuttle bus, with nearly 360 degree windows, allows Carefree Coverings to display 15 window fashions and seven different operating systems including full automation.

Inside the iMobile showroom, the client watches a large flat screen displaying informative Hunter Douglas product videos, showing operation and design options. After viewing the products and physically operating them, the client, now within their homes, sample book of choices in hand, select their own style and colors.

Careful measurement and pricing follows, Hunter Douglas has revolutionized that process with iCM and Direct Connect, making the client comfortable

with their choices and removing the stress for the client, as well as, for myself and my staff. The appointment and experience ends smoothly without repeated trips to the showroom.

The iMobile Showroom has changed the way Carefree Coverings does business. With the iMobile Showroom and an iPad in hand, and using iMagine software, the client can go from indecision to decision by actually seeing exactly what their Hunter Douglas selections look like in their own virtual homes.

The iMobile Showroom accompanied by advanced Hunter Douglas intelligent tools, have allowed Pelow to meet and exceed business goals.

Carefree Coverings is located at 7275 E. Easy St. in Carefree in Suite A105. The store is open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Friday and by appointment on Saturday. For information call 480-595-2920 or go to carefreecoverings.hdspd.com

I wish to express some observations and comments regarding the proposed dog park initiative by “Anthem Loves Dogs”. I am a long-term resident and a dog owner.

Anthem Loves Dogs is a well organized group of concerned dog owners. They stress the need for a dog park primarily based upon logistics (need to be within Anthem) and field of grass vs. stones at the present Anthem Pets facility in nearby New River. However, there are mitigating issues that should be considered in the final decision to build/maintain a locally centralized dog park:

• The current Anthem Pets dog park is a well established, state recognized privately run/self supporting corporation. Anthem Pets costs the residents of Anthem nothing UNLESS they use the park. Even then, the amount is minimal.

• Anthem Pets is a legacy initiative that the Council did not previously support. It would now be difficult in principle to ignore the work that they put into promoting an Anthem dog park and the progress they have accomplished.

• Anthem Pets - while not located in central Anthem, it is not significantly further away than other Anthem amenities such at the Outlets, churches and schools. It is by definition in “Anthem proper”.

• Anthem Pets is not just a dog park - they offer dog counseling, pet adoptions and other pet owner needs.

• While Anthem Council staff is working the issue(s) to determine requirements to build a dog park and its maintenance, there have been no known negotiations between Anthem Loves Dogs

and Anthem Pets to add and fund a grassy (real or synthetic) area within the existing New River facility.

• Maintenance of a dog park is costly. Heath issues from feces to those in contact with contaminated grass must be recognized in the maintenance upkeep; not just watering, seeding and fertiliziation.

• Should residents that don’t use the park really have to pay via assessment increase when there is a local facility?

• The charter of the Council is to provide services and a lifestyle that benefit the entire Anthem community. Is building a dog park consistent with that principle/charter?

In conclusion, I would proposed that Anthem Loves Dogs establish/reach out to Anthem Pets and build upon their success and support ($$) cost effective changes to accommodate their wishes for the enhancement and enjoyment of dogs for all dog members in the community. Perhaps the ACC can bring these two organizations together to begin talks?

Bob Golembe, Anthem

Isn’t it time we Americans got to know each other?

The late Tom Pettit, who covered American politics so well for NBC News from John Kennedy in 1960 to Bill Clinton in 1992, was missed even more during this year’s uninspiring presidential campaign. My personal favorite Tom Pettit professional moment was when he was interviewing Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz, who served in the Cabinets of both Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.

Secretary Butz, an unrelenting critic of the food stamps program then under his department, unloaded on the “greedy” exploiters of food stamps he and his people were chasing down. Pettit asked Butz if he knew anyone who had used food stamps. Butz spoke about how he was no stranger to supermarkets, that he accompanied his wife on the grocery shopping and that he had personally seen people at the checkout counter paying with food stamps.

Pettit pressed Butz: Did the secretary know anyone — personally — who depended upon food stamps to feed her children? After an extended silence, the obviously displeased agriculture secretary answered the question, “No.” The only thing that followed was the close: “Tom Pettit, NBC News, Washington.”

This anecdote reminds me why the military draft between 1940 and 1973 educated so many of us about what it meant to be

an American and, more impor tant ly, tells me why in the second decade of the 21st century the United States

desperately needs every 18-year-old American to give two years of national service, military or civilian, to their country.

First, a personal note: At Parris Island, S.C., in Marine Corps boot camp, for the first time in my life I slept in the same quarters with African-Americans and took orders, as a matter of course, from African-Americans. In that boot camp platoon, there were six college graduates, four young men who, given the option by juvenile courts, had chosen to enlist rather than have the judge impose a sentence and one of us, who proved to be both a gentle giant and a superb rifleman, who had never gone beyond the eighth grade.

We were mostly Catholics from the North or Baptists from the South. But we also included four Jewish Marines and even a couple of, to the manor born, Episcopalians. After the longest 13 weeks of our lives, we all came to know that while our ancestors may have come to America at different times and in different ships, now we were all in the same boat — and that each of us was an American.

The draft — when three out of four male college-graduates as well as high-school graduates

served — guaranteed that Americans of all classes, all social strata and all areas of the country would shoulder the responsibility of defending their nation. And that in doing so they would rub shoulders with and — while sharing bunks, a weekend pass and, sometimes, even foxholes — get to know, and to depend upon, other Americans very different from themselves.

Which brings us back to a variation of Tom Pettit’s great question of Earl Butz: Do you, Mr. Commentator, or do you, Madame Senator, personally know anyone whom your arguments or your votes have sent into combat? Have you attended the funeral of anyone whom you personally knew who was killed in Iraq or Afghanistan?

A “Support Our Troops” decal on your SUV or a flag pin in your lapel does not qualify. The American Establishment — political, economic, academic and journalistic — has next to no personal stake in men and women who risk their life and limbs to defend the United States. Our military is increasingly integrated by race and increasingly segregated by class.

Tragically, most Americans today only know people exactly like themselves. Universal national service would introduce Americans to each other and to what it mean to be a citizen.
