The Block of the Month was won by Linda Harper. President’s message – Kristin Kipper I was reading a quilt shop online newsletter from my home state of Illinois that described the brilliant colors of our fall leaves as the "flowers of the fall." Having just taken a trip up to Maine to visit my daughter for her college's parent's weekend, I looked at the vibrant fall leaves of that northern state with new eyes. They truly are the flowers of fall as we so enjoy the many shades of reds, yellows, oranges and browns! As I write this letter, our colors are just beginning to change in our great southern state of South Carolina. As they do, I hope you too will look at the changes with a new light and use them to inspire you! Also, in November, we all begin to think about the upcoming holidays and sharing that time with family and friends. This week I just received a letter from North Greenville University's theatre department with an invitation to come see their latest musical: "Quilters, A Patchwork of Stories in Song." I hope this invitation will create an opportunity for our guild family to spend some time together to share in an art we all love, quilting. More information on the musical can be found in our "Road Trips" section of this newsletter. Happy Stitching! Kristin Membership News – Sue Burton By the end of the October meeting, there were 86 members signed in. With four new members joining and five members renewing, we now have 144 guild members. Meeting Minutes 10/2/2014 Kristin opened the meeting at 7:00. The September minutes were approved. Kristin read a letter from a recent guest who thanked the guild for such a warm reception and friendly faces. Lynn Parker has pictures of completed quilts from the Grandmother’s Flower Garden squares that were sent to France, if you want to see them. The guild decided at the beginning of the year to have a charity donation of spare change to adopt a child or a family for Christmas this year. So far that fund has about $60. After the next meeting we will see how far the current total will go toward this endeavor. The Landrum quilt guild reminds quilters to get out and vote YES for raffle sales. Committee Reports Secret Quilter: Penny reports that there will be no secret quilter this year due to lack of interest. Programs: Sandy asks that people who have signed up for the November 8 free motion class will need to pay for it tonight, or we will have to cancel Debbie Clark’s class. Also, her endless feather class will be about 45 minutes of drawing time with the rest will be work on the machine. Remember our December meeting is the winter social, so bring a dish to share. Publicity: Lynn Parker is working with Lynnette Baker and the philanthropy team to have a workshop and demonstration at the Pelham road Library on Saturday, November 1. If you are interested in helping to set up a display and participate in the program, please see Lynn or philanthropy. Also, we will make a window display that is a tribute to veterans for the month of November. If you have any quilts or memorabilia you can loan, let them know as well. It was also suggested that members could go that morning and make Christmas ornaments for our tree for the Festival of Trees. Challenge Quilt: Peggy McQuade reminded members that theme of the challenge quilt is “What is Your Inspiration?” The quilt needs to have been started after August 2014 and finished by the February meeting. She has fliers at the check in desk.

Block of the Month: Darlene Sanford showed the block for November which is paper pieced. She has directions at the back and would be happy to show anyone how to assemble the block. Guild Sales: Karen Carson has many bargains and reminds members that all the proceeds go to help pay for our wonderful speakers. Tonight’s selections include compete Christmas kits, patterns, scarves with pockets, and a sewing basket and an OTT light that you can buy a ticket for a drawing in December. Philanthropy: Ruth Pollow is accepting fat quarters for a quilt that will be donated to Loaves and Fishes for their spring auction. She is also looking for help cutting squares and sewing block. Mystery Quilts: Cheryl Brickey has some copies of this month’s instructions. The instructions were also sent out on line this morning. There are about 43 members and online “friends” participating in the Mystery Quilt challenge. Hospitality: Johellen George introduced the following new members: Susan Gosnell, Debbie Johnson and Betty Adams. Education Minute: Susan Perham told the guild about several phone Apps that help her with her quilting. She keeps a file of quilting books, a list of threads and uses several other Apps. See her after the program if you want to see more. Festival of Trees: Sandy Wolf has about 100 ornaments for the FPQ Christmas tree for the Festival of Trees. We will need about 300. Quilters can meet from 1:00-4:00 before the November meeting or bring ornaments to the meeting. It was also suggested that members could bring their supplies and work on their ornaments at the Pelham Road Library as part of our demonstration on the morning of November 1. Membership: Sue Burton reported 85 members have signed in tonight. If you have joined or renewed, please be sure to come by the sign in table to pick up your new FPQ directory. Our visitors this evening were Nancy DeJong, Beverly Nelson and Jennifer Populous Johellen’s sister-in-law. Refreshments: Christine Serig will bring a list to sign up for January through March at the next meeting. Karen McGraw announced that Joanna Yost was having a “milestone birthday” and brought out a cake (sang happy birthday) Our speaker was Sandra Baker, quilter and dollmaker. $ Door prize: Congratulations to Linda Ligon, Suzan Hahne and Christine Wilde. Nametag door prize: Congratulation to Linda Fry, Caroline Jones, Debbie Miller (Pelzer) Block of the month: 13 blocks were won by Linda Harper. Filling in for Sandy Helsel: Jennifer McNeill

    3.

    4.

    5.

    6.

Chose a BLUE fabric that simulates sky for the background, a white or off white fabric for the snowman's body, and a black or dark fabric for the snowman's hat.

    Cutting instructions:

    1. From the dark hat fabric, cut one 2 ½ x 3 ¼ inch rectangle and one 1 x 5 inch rectangle.

    2. From the BLUE background fabric cut the following:

    a. Cut two - 2 ½ x 3 1/8 inch rectangles

    b. Cut two - 1 x 2 ¼ inch rectangles

    c. Cut two - 2 ¾ x 3 3/8 inch rectangles

    d. Cut two - 3 ¾ x 2 ¾ inch rectangles

    e. Cut two - 4 ½ x 2 ¼ inch rectangles

    f. Cut four - 1 inch squares. Fold each in half point-to-point to form a triangle and finger press a center seam line and open again.

    g. Cut four - 1 ½ inch squares. Fold each in half point-to-point to form a triangle and finger press a center seam line and open again.

    h. Cut four - 1 ¾ inch squares. Fold each in half point-to-point to form a triangle and finger press a center seam line and open again.

    From the white-ish snowman fabric cut one 2 ¾ inch square, one 3 ¾ x 4 inch rectangle, and one 4 ½ x 5 inch rectangle.

    Assembly instructions:

Lay the four 1-inch blue squares on the four corners of the 2 ¾ inch white square. Sew a diagonal seam. Do the same with the four 1 ½ inch blue squares and the smaller white rectangle. Again with the four 1 ¾ inch blue squares and the larger white rectangle. You will end up with three blocks that look like those in graphic 4.

Trim the corners to ¼ inch from the sewn line. See graphic 5.

  • - 7 -

    7.

    8.

Press the corners open like in graphic 6.

Referring to graphic 7, assemble the pieces into rows. The pieces cut in steps 2a-2e go in order for rows 1-5. With right sides together and using a ¼ inch seam allowance, join the pieces in each row. Press seams to the background fabrics. Finished rows should look like those in graphic 8.

    Stitch the rows together. Press.

Now it is time to embellish. Add eyes and a nose. Maybe a few buttons down the front of the middle section. I am leaving this up to you.

    Your completed unfinished block will measure 8 ½ x 12 ½ inches.
