The Block of the Month was won by Karen Carson who shared her blocks with Joanna Yost. President’s message – Kristin Kipper The guild is off to another fabulous year, our 31st! I am so thankful to that charter group of women for having the time, energy and forethought to start a group specifically for quilters! Thankfully, we still have 3 charter members in our guild, Carolyn Jones, Claudia Hembree and Anne Winans, who just decided to rejoin! I am sure if you ask these charter members they will tell you they have seen much change and growth within the guild. Having just hosted our "New Member Social" prior to our September meeting, it was so great to see a new group of members willing to share ideas and jump right into FPQG with energy and enthusiasm! I personally believe that this is one of the best ways to grow the guild, by listening to the ideas of others and trying new ways of doing things! This may be simply a new quilting technique that they want to share, it may be a new program that they want to create within the guild or it may just be a new idea we have never thought of! New ideas along with the stability of those "tried and true" make this guild a collective success! I hope that throughout this year everyone gets to know someone new, whether that is a member who has been in the guild for years and can share their traditions and experiences with you, or someone who just joined the guild and is new to quilting that may provide a unique perspective! Happy Stitching! Kristin Membership News – Sue Burton I loved seeing so many of our newest members (14) and Board members attend the new member social last month. Several of our "newbies" told me it helped them to understand our activities and operations better. I hope it also made you feel more welcome! Thanks to all for attending. We have 135 current members, and I know that number will be increasing. We had 4 new members join in September. Welcome to Keri Rowland, Steve and Amy Parker and Deborah Plummer. Their contact information will be included in our new membership directories. The plan is to have the directories ready for distribution at our October meeting. Five guests also joined us last month: Linda Patton of Mauldin; Debbie Johnson of Greenville, Kelly Curto and Trina Rice of Greer; and Paige Maddox of Fountain Inn. I hope you will come back and see more of what we do as a guild.

Please feel free to ask at the membership table if there is anything we can do for you. Sue Burton Membership Chair

Philanthropy News A big THANK YOU to everyone who has donated a quilt or other things in the past few months. I have delivered 17 quilts, 15 tote bags, 4 taggies, and 25 small, felt personal bags to three shelters. Serenity Place, Safe Harbor, and Miracle Hill's Shepherd Gate are always very grateful and pleased to receive these items. Philanthropy is very happy to have Gayle Brown volunteer to help this year. We could still use someone who would like to cut fabric for quilt kits. Also, don't forget that Philanthropy has batting that will be cut for you. Just let me know what size batting you need, and it will be delivered to you at the next meeting or to your home!!! Lois Gaston 864-297-1329 Coordinator of Children's Quilts Carolina Cut Ups The Carolina Cut Ups Quilting Bee meets the first Wednesday of every month beginning at 9:30 a.m. Bring a project to work on, a lunch (or some members go out to eat), and a $1 contribution (collected at each meeting). New people are always welcome! We meet in the crafts room located in the Family Life Center of Taylors First Baptist Church, 200 W. Main St., Taylors. Loaves & Fishes Donation Quilt The Foothills Guild has agreed to make an auction quilt for the Loaves and Fishes annual fundraising auction in June 2015. The Galaxy Star pattern has been chosen and we want to start making the quilt in the next few months. How can you help? I’m glad you asked! Ruth Pollow will be collecting batik fabrics from Guild members to start the cutting of strips for this quilt. We will be using batiks in dark to medium shades of all colors. No pastel or light batiks, please. Batik fat quarters would be perfect. Any fabric we do not use for this quilt will be turned over to philanthropy for use in our other donation quilt projects. Future sewing workshops will be planned for sewing the blocks and assembling the quilt top. Carol Alperin has offered to donate the machine quilting part of this project. Please bring your batik donations to the October meeting were we will be collecting the fabric for this quilt. Thank you. Ruth Pollow 864-244-0263 Treasurer's Report - Submitted by Carol M. Johnson

St. Francis Festival Of Trees Ornament Class Our ornament class will meet at 1pm at the church on Oct. 2 before our guild meeting. IT'S FREE!! We will make the cute "yo-yo tree" that Ginny Lindler made as shown at our Sept. meeting. Supplies for each tree: 6- 3 1/2 inch squares of green fabric, 1- 3 1/2 inch square of brown fabric for trunk, 1- 3 1/2 inch square of gold fabric for the top, optional star button for a tree topper, thread to match fabric, multicolored beads can be sewn on the green tree for ornaments and a small amount of ribbon for hanger. Also, if you bring your machine we can make a cute Santa that Nan Taylor will show us! Supplies: fabric in small amounts, red, white and flesh/pink skin color, small black beads for eyes or black embroidery thread and basic sewing supplies. We must have 300 ornaments by our November meeting so please surprise us with your handiwork. Thank you so much for everyone that was so generous in turning yours in already! Remember this is our guild tree so 100% participation is our goal! Put your name on the back of your ornament and it will be returned to you! THANKS!!

FPQG Challenge 2015 One of the ingredients for creating a quilt is inspiration. You might be inspired by a sunset, a pattern in a floor tile, or a need (such as a new member in your family). Where we live and what we do is the inspiration for the Foothills Piecemakers Quilting Guild name and logo. This year’s challenge is simple: “be inspired, make a quilt, and share your inspiration”. Here are the rules:

    1. The quilt must be started after the August 2014 meeting.

    2. No kits are allowed. 3. The inspiration must be documented by a written

description and/or a picture. 4. The finished quilt, written description and/or picture

are due at the February 5, 2015 meeting. The quilt and documentation will be displayed together for voting.

If you have any questions about the Inspiration Challenge call or email Peggy McQuade, 864—497-4343 or [email protected].

November Block of the Month - Holiday Star (Free pattern from Ula Lenz's website - rescaled by me)

Karen Carson was the winner of the 19 (I believe that was the number) Batik Blocks last month. She felt that it was too many blocks for one person and ask that a second name be drawn so that she could share. Joanna Yost was that lucky person. Thank you for all who participated. The Scrappy Batiks looked great. The paper pieced block for November will be 8" finished. Please use red, green and white (as per instructions on the foundation pieces). Christmas fabric would be great but any red and green is okay (NOT pastels). Below are the fabric cutting instructions. I will have basic paper piecing instructions available at the next meeting along with copies of the foundation pieces. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions regarding paper piecing. Cutting -- RED #2 1 3/4" x 3 1/4" #6 2" x 5" GREEN #3 1 3/4" x 3 1/4" #4 1 3/4" x 4 1/4" WHITE #1 3" x 4 1/2" #5 4 3/4" x 2 3/4" YOU WILL NEED 4 PIECES OF EACH OF THESE CUTTINGS. Print 2 copies of the pattern as you will need a total of 4 units. I will have copies of the foundation pieces at the next meeting. I will also bring several samples of each step along with a small cutting mat so that I can demonstrate the trimming process. Also, please leave ALL THE PAPER IN the block when you are done. Leaving the paper intact will help with any bias edges and also can make it easier for the "winner" to piece the blocks together.

Hi Quilters - This is the last chance to join in the Secret Quilter for this year. If we don't get some more participation, I'm afraid it will be cancelled for the year. So far we only have a couple of people that are interested. If you would like to participate, please print out the application (or I will have them at the next meeting) and bring them with your fat quarter samples to the next meeting. I will put it all together and give them out after the break. Please join in so we can all learn a little more about each other’s likes and dislikes! Thanks, Penny Secret Quilter QUESTIONAIRE Name: __________________________________________________________________ Address:_________________________________________________________________ Phone: __________________________________________________________________ E-Mail: __________________________________________________________________ Birthday: ________________________ Anniversary: _____________________________ Spouse Name: _____________________________________ Favorite Colors: ___________________________________________________________ Favorite Style: ___ Traditional ___ Modern ___ Country ___ Other I like to collect: ___________________________________________________________ Examples: Thimbles, pin cushions, quilt guild pins, etc.) Which room/s would you like the items for and color preferred: ____________________ What type of item would you like? Other small surprises in between would be nice as well (not necessarily a quilt – cute pin, pin cushion, quilted post card, even a regular card) Please attach at least one fat quarter for each of the two projects (so that would be at least 2 fat quarters) so we’ll have a better sense of what type of fabric you would like.
