reading a lot about teams and players inside.

What may be easy to overlook is that there is quite a lot of consistency in the coaching ranks for area high schools and

NWOSU, as well. Coach Keith Barefield is in his fourth year as head man of the Rangers, Ryan Laverty is in his third year as the Goldbugs’ head coach; and Bryce Schanbacher is beginning his fourth year

at the helm of the Cherokee Chiefs. The only new head coach in the area is Faron Kraft at Medicine Lodge while long-timers Scott Kysar at Waynoka, Brian Severin at Timberlake and James Johnston at South Barber have an estimated 75-80 years of combined football coaching service. Brandon Bookout is in just his second year as head man at AMS, but he has long-time assistant Jeff Levetzow’s experience and expertise to draw on.

Best bets for playoffsOn paper, it appears that Timberlake

probably has the best opportunity for post-season honors while Cherokee is in somewhat of a rebuilding mode after losing 10 seniors to graduation. Alva High has some experienced linemen but is still young at the skill positions while South Barber could be a force in their class in Kansas.

Waynoka has a limited number on their roster and will have to stay healthy in order to keep at least eight players on the field this season. Medicine Lodge has

a large number of juniors and seniors and should be better this season if they can avoid injuries to their key personnel.

The Rangers appear to have some very talented new players in the fold to go along with a lot of returning lettermen and starters. Look for them to be challenging for a post-season berth again in the Central States Football League and the NAIA.

It looks like a fun season, and I believe nearly everybody is ready for some cool, fall football weather if we can just get rid of this infernal heat wave! We wish all area teams a safe and successful season.

A fun and interesting rideTwo years after the Wards had moved

from Carmen to Alva in 1995, Lynn Martin advertised in the Review-Courier/Newsgram that he needed a sports writer to cover the Alva Football Team. I had done some sports writing for the Bristow News and Record during the ‘80s until we moved to the Carmen-Dacoma School System in ’88.

One game of the ’97-98 season had already taken place when I saw Lynn in downtown Alva one day and asked if he had hired someone to cover the Goldbugs yet. He indicated that he was still looking for a writer, and we made an agreement for me to try the next game (I believe it was Blackwell at Alva) to see if he liked my writing style and if I felt that I could work it into my insurance sales schedule.

Afraid he might have to do the sports writing if I didn’t, he seemed to be pleased with my first story covering Alva High School sports and we agreed on an hourly rate and I covered the rest of the season. Eventually I expanded my coverage to the Northwestern Rangers as well. And the

rest is history. I have been writing for the local paper for a full 13 years, covering not just football but nearly all sports for AMS, AHS and NWOSU at one time or another.

Two NAIA Championship runsThe football coverage has included

two trips to the NAIA Division I Finals in Savannah (Hardin County), Tenn. The Rangers won the 1999 title with an exciting come-from-behind win over Georgetown and then suffered a disappointing loss in 2000 to the same team. Roland Meyer accompanied me on both those trips, and we shared a lot of interesting stories on the 7-8 hour one-way drive.

Other seasons involving championships won by area schools include the 2003 Class 3A State Basketball Championship won by the Alva Ladybugs and the 2005 Class 1A State Football Title won by the South Barber Chieftains in Russell, Kansas. Then there was the Class C State Championship by the Timberlake Tigers in 2009 and the unforgettable run to the 2010 Class B State Championship and an undefeated season by the Cherokee Chiefs.

There have been lots of other memorable games and plays over the last 13 years, and it has almost always been fun to watch the local athletes along with the area players and certainly, the Rangers and Lady Rangers in action.

The most fun has been to watch the progress of young players as they moved up through the middle schools, high schools and even into college. I have also enjoyed working with other sports writers who have worked for the Review-Courier during my tenure, especially Jim Barker, Ryan Pierce and Matt Cox. They all had unique perspectives as athletes, prospective or actual coaches and writers who knew how to use the English language correctly in interesting sports stories.

I have also enjoyed my association with Sports Editor Roger McKenzie and former Assignment Editor Helen Barrett and the current one, Jim Stout. My job the past two and half years has included advertising sales, so I have had a good time in my association with all the office folks and sales people. As you may have guessed or heard by now, the Wards are moving over near Stillwater within the next month, but we have certainly enjoyed our 16 years in Alva and will miss all our friends and co-workers.

It’s been a fun thirteen years

Rangers hope to duplicate or better an 8-3 season last year that ended with a first round loss in South Dakota to the then number one ranked University of Sioux Falls. The touch schedule remains nearly identical. It includes five NCAA teams, including Division I’s University of South Dakota and four DII teams. The only change of opponent from a year ago is the replacement of Southern Oregon University with Southwestern Oklahoma State.

That old rival is the team the Rangers will open their season with on Sept. 1 here. If the Rangers are to be as successful as last season, they pretty much must win that first game. It will be hard because last year the Rangers had the talents of two record-breaking seniors who dominated the ground (Nate Guillory) and the air (Kory Williams). They also had a core of offensive and defensive linemen who are now gone, including the important center position.

However, the Rangers that take the field against SWOSU in the opener will

be talented—and young. If they are ready as well, the Rangers could be off on another strong season. They got a boost by being picked 13th in the NAIA Football Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll. They are also heavily favored to win yet another Central States Football League title.

Coach Keith Barefield and his staff have worked hard to get the Rangers ready. Heat conditions have been brutal, with last week’s temperatures the hottest yet for practices. But the Rangers have survived intact.

Some weapons return, including quarterback Kyle Jech, receivers Kent McDonald and Keith Barefield, Jr., running back Jared Jackson, and linemen Zach Owens and Ray Grubbs on offense and Peter Brooks, Kade Howard, Norman Young, Michael Harmon, Chris Jones, Daniel Golden, and Brock Wardlaw on defense.

Six starters on offense and six on defense return. Translated that means a lot of people who haven’t started before will get to play this season.

Coach Barefield has been pretty close

to the vest about this year’s team. He’s aware of the talent, but also the youth.

“We have a talented group, but we also have a lot of untested players,” he noted.

The offensive line includes veterans Owens and Grubbs who will man the guard spots, but the other three positions will feature new faces. A rotation of T.J. Hall, Corbin Reid, Lawrence Dixon, and QuonStoney (Stoney) Jackson will rotate in with Owens and Grubbs to fill the offensive line. Reid is set to start at center, and Jackson and Dixon getting the nods at tackles.

Receivers are pretty set with seniors McDonald at wide receiver and Barefield at tight end. The rest are new and/or young. Andrew King, who is just a sophomore, will play at the other wide receiver. When a fourth receiver is on the field, junior Cody Hooper will be the first on the field. Hooper is was red-shirted last season after an injury. Like Barefield, Jr., he is a coach’s son. His dad is Northwestern softball coach Cody Hooper.

From Page 4 Rangersever. Behind Jackson, however, it is a young group. Hunter Wolf will back up Jackson. He is a sophomore. Another sophomore, Jermil Martin, is pushing Wolf. True freshman Tyrell Holloway is also talented enough to move up.

Dalton Holliman is a senior, but you haven’t heard his name mentioned much. He’ll start at fullback.

Defensively, the Rangers again are young and talented. Tackle Peter Brooks is very good and should be faster than last year because he lost weight over the summer. Hopefully, it won’t diminish his ability to handle big offensive linemen. Sophomore Norman Young and senior Kade Howard will split time at nose guard.

Youth will be served at the end positions. Alva’s Jaedan Bersche had a pretty good freshman season and his speed makes him the starting speed rusher at end. The other side will be split between freshman Kyle Campbell and senior Kyle Lancaster.

If there is a concern on defense, it might be at the linebacker spots. Junior Michael Harmon is the only returnee. The Rangers only use two linebackers in their basic defense. The other spot is currently held by DeRyan Arnold, a freshman. The rest of the rotation of linebackers can be described as young and/or untested.

The secondary is talented. It has been described as maybe the fastest group in years. But it is also young. Chris Jones and Daniel Golden, both seniors, and Brock Wardlaw, a junior, are the veterans. Wardlaw led the Rangers with six interceptions last year. But the young guns are making their presence known here.

Freshmen Michael Ray, Reggie Cole and Chris Hill and sophomores Gussie Jones, Josh Moss, and Marvin Desir should all see extensive action. Desir and Jones are listed as the starting cornerbacks for the SWOSU game, with Ray, Cole, and Wardlaw as the starting safeties. Starting here is very fluid. All of the above will see plenty of action.

Defensive Coordinator Chad Adams is in his third season here. He summed up the defensive situation for Northwestern.

we do or how talented we are. We have to be great tacklers and play physical,” he said. “We have to make teams hate to play us.”

Coach Barefield is in his fifth season at Northwestern. He has compiled a record 30-14 and in 14 career seasons is 96-47-2. He has added Ron Williams to his staff as the offensive line coach, replacing Justin Iske from a year ago. Williams has coached at the high school and college levels for over 20 years.

the Rangers in the NAIA. They will undoubtedly apply again this summer to join the NCAA’s Division II. A fitting send off would be to make the NAIA play-offs and then see how far the team can advance.

One thing is certain with a young team. The prospects may include uncertainty, but they also are filled with excitement. In the end, that may be all that we as fans can ask for.

than his share of injuries and lost more than his share of games in the past two years, Alva High School head coach Ryan Laverty is still smiling. Maybe he knows something good is going to happen this season for the Alva Goldbugs.

In his first season, the Goldbugs went 4-6. Last year was a disaster in both results and injuries, with starters going down left and right, led by the early departure of senior quarterback Devery VanLandingham. Laverty and his staff were forced to make young players grow up quickly under fire. The result wasn’t pretty—a 3-7 record in Class 2A District 1. The only wins the Goldbugs could muster until the final game of the season were over Blackwell and Perry. But in that final game, the Goldbugs flushed away a season-long buildup of pain. Alva demolished Chisholm by a 47-0 score that hopefully gives the returning players a sense that the tide as been turned.

It probably won’t be a stellar season because the Goldbugs are still young. Next year, however, could be the year

of the Bugs. This year is more likely to be the modest emergence of the Bugs. No doubt about it, the Goldbugs will be better. But they are still young.

The 2011 Goldbugs have just five seniors and two of them are new. The three returning seniors started with Gavin Willyard and Henry Nighswonger helping on the line and Silas Martin providing steady offensive production as a receiver and good work in the defensive secondary.

At the heart of the Goldbugs, at least this season, are the juniors and sophomores who were pushed into action last year—the linemen who got action, the defenders who had to come in ready or not, the receivers who had to step up, and two quarterbacks who took over and shared the spotlight, but are now playing together on the field at the same time instead of in relief of one another. They are the reason, the Goldbugs will be better this season.

Starting at quarterback will be sophomore Ty Hooper. He shared that duty with Chance Davis last season, but Davis, who is a junior, is helping the team

at running back on offense and defensive back and linebacker on defense. He will also serve as a backup quarterback, but mostly in emergency situations.

Hooper has a good arm and is still learning not to force the ball. Not having to play defense, as Davis did last year, should help him. He can throw long and is getting better. Davis will be used initially as a backup running back, which should help him play tougher on defense since he, too, will not play as much offense.

Gone is 1,000 yard rusher Jacob Ellis. He will be hard to replace. Tanner McGehee, who is new to the running back position, gets the nod here. McGehee is fast, according to Coach Laverty, with breakaway ability. The junior has looked good in a preseason scrimmage at Fairview.

With Willyard at center and Nighswonger at one guard, the Goldbugs have senior experience in the offensive line. Kyler Kippen, a junior who saw a lot action last year, should start at the other guard.

Two players who were injured last year fill out the offensive line. Junior Shane Murrow and sophomore Joby Allen, who are both at home as running backs, have been moved to the tackle spots because of their size and speed. They are both talented, but new to the position, which has to keep fast defensive linemen and linebackers away from the quarterback. They must be successful if the Goldbugs are to make progress.

The receiving corps can get the job done if Hooper has the time to throw. The spread offense used by Laverty and his staff calls for four receivers. Sophomores Cade Pfleider and Riley Hess, junior Reygan Martin, and senior Silas Martin are slated to fill those spots. All received a lot of positive experience last season. Junior Cody Forell and freshman Trevor Johnson will also see action at receiver.

A rotation of linemen on both offense and defense is being used to keep the linemen fresh. Junior Mitchell Rader and sophomore Dakota Nusser will spell the offensive line starters and see a lot of action.

On the defensive line, Kyler Kippen and Gavin Willyard will see action at tackle, along with Nusser. Nighswonger and speedy sophomore Brandon Ellis will start at ends, with some of the younger

players being developed to spell them.Allen and Murrow will play at the

inside linebacker spots and Davis and Hess will operate on the outside. Pfleider, McGehee, and sophomore Tyler Gavitt will rotate in at linebacker as well.

and his staff will once again have to try to avoid injuries.

“We have a chance to make the play-offs if we stay healthy,” he said.

The team’s “game smarts” is also improving. Laverty addressed that when he said, “Mentally, we’re where we expect kids to be going into year three.”

Hennessey and Watonga are the district favorites, according to Laverty. If that hold true, it leaves Alva likely to battle Tonkawa, Perry, and OCS for the two remaining playoff spots. Blackwell and Chisholm will, of course, want to get some revenge for the loss that Alva gave them.

“This is a great group of kids. They work hard,” said Laverty. “They’ve taken their lumps the last couple of years. Now they want to win and give out some lumps.”

coaches report that the seventh and eighth graders have been adjusting fairly well to practices in the extremely hot conditions so far this season. Head coach Brandon Bookout and assistants Jeff Levetzow and Eric Tutwiler have been making certain that the players get plenty of water with frequent breaks during the practices held north of the AMS Gym.

There are still a few good shady elm trees on the west side of the practice area where players can cool off a bit during their breaks. Another helpful factor is the presence of Manager Trevor Allison and five water girls, all of whom get water to players quickly when they need it. Another cooling strategy is the use of cold, wet towels players put over their heads or around their necks during breaks. This helps cool down their core temperatures and reduces the chances of becoming overheated.

Quarter action at the end of some of the games. Woodward has been added to the schedule, and Coach Bookout thinks that game will be a pretty good match-up in October.

He indicated that AMS lost some speed with the eighth graders who moved up to the AHS squad this year, but have gained some of it back in the present seventh grade bunch. Bookout is in his second year as the head coach at AMS and is very proud of the good number of squad members who were faithful to work out and lift weights over the summer. He believes that will pay dividends this fall.

New strategiesBookout and Levetzow have

changed their strategies on both sides of the ball for the new season. Offensively, the Young Bugs will operate from a no-huddle formation and try to speed up the game some. This should enable the Alva squad to out-condition the opponents with an edge in endurance in the fourth quarter.

Bookout stated, “The guys have been catching on very quickly to the changes in our offense and seem to like the quicker pace.”

Defensively, the Young Bugs will switch from a 3-3-5 alignment to a

4-2-5 to take advantage of more speed at the flanks, including the ends and linebackers.

The coaches like what they have seen so far and expect to be as good or better than last season. It will be interesting to watch them develop and progress.

By the time this is printed, the AMS team will have had at least one scrimmage and will be anxious to go against somebody else, so get out and watch them play on Tuesday, Sept. 6!

and posting a 6-5 record, Waynoka finds itself in a precarious position—low in numbers and high in inexperience. The year before last, the Railroaders went 8-3 and won a play-off game.

With 16 players last year, including five seniors, the Railroaders got off to a 4-0 start before a big loss to Forgan and a narrow four-point loss to Waukomis. They bounced back to win two straight games before tailing off with three losses, including a 46-0 play-off loss to Tipton in the first round of the Class C playoffs.

Scott Kysar’s Waynoka teams are always hard working and used to making the play-offs. It may not happen this year, however, because the

Railroaders are down to just 12 players and only two of them have ever started. The Railroaders lost five seniors and nine players in all from that team, including their quarterback, some linemen and receivers. The offense and defense were both impacted.

“I’ve been here since 1978 and this is the lowest number of players I’ve had and the least experienced,” said Coach Kysar. But he added that the players are working hard and have a good attitude.

The Railroaders return seven players from a year ago, but only Layne Meriwether and Justin Replogle, the team’s only seniors, were starters. Both seniors are hard workers and will be expected to provide leadership for the team.

Meriwether will operate at tailback and defensive back. He is a hard runner, but he’ll have to play behind an inexperienced line. Replogle was slotted at end and linebacker last year, but the versatile player could end up just about anywhere if the need arises.

Other returnees are Terrance and Austin Long, Andrew Baird, Kelby Reed, and Mark Alvardo. They will be depended on, as well as newcomers C.J. Long, Shawn Wells, Joshia Darr, and Jason Bence.

Most positions are up for grabs. Whoever starts other than Meriwether and Replogle will be a new starter at that position.

Wells. Kelby Reed, who played some center last year, has a head start at center. The process is almost show and show for most positions—show me what you can do and then show me again.

“We’re going to try to get our eight best kids out there in any combination that makes us as good as we can be,” said Kysar. “It’s going to be exciting. It’ll be different. It’s going to be brand new, that’s for sure.”

Coach Kysar is assisted for the fifth year by Beau Westphal. The two coaches will have the Railroaders ready for their first game against Gracemont on Sept. 2.

The Railroaders play in tough Distinct C1. Coach Kysar listed Forgan, Shattuck, and Sharon-Mutual as the district favorites. All reached the play-offs last year. Forgan made it all the way to the finals before losing to Deer Creek Lamont.

Other C1 schools include Balko, Boise City, Buffalo, Goodwell-Yarbrough, and Tyrone. All of them will be battling the Railroaders for one of the fourth district play-off spots. Coach Kysar knows his team must stay healthy and the newcomers must come on strong if they are to have a chance to advance to post-season.

you win the state championship? That’s the pleasant dilemma for

Cherokee’s Coach Bryce Schanbacher. The answer is you go back to work and try to win it again.

Alas, a repeat is probably not in the cards. The Chiefs lost too much firepower and strength, including quarterback Justin Schanbacher who led undefeated Cherokee to the Class B State Championship with a record-setting season

The quarterback, who is now at Northwestern Oklahoma State pursuing football at the next level, wasn’t the only loss the Chiefs will have to overcome. Nine other seniors

graduated and all will be missed. But Cherokee’s cupboard is certainly not empty.

A return to the Class B1 district title is a definite possibility, although Coach Schanbacher knows that Laverne and Garber are picked to vie for the top district spot. Certainly, Cherokee should advance to the play-offs. They have 28 players, including five seniors and seven juniors most of who have the experience of playing on a championship team. Even some of the younger players got to play last year because Cherokee jumped out to big early leads in most games. That depth of experience will prove valuable this year and could even set the Chiefs on a long run.

Five returning starters, three seniors and two juniors, will lead the way for the Chiefs. Jerran Waugh (6’1”, 235) will man the end positions on both offense and defense. Wesley Gilchrist (5’11”, 275) will play guard and nose guard. Those two will anchor the lines, along with junior Michael Lewis (62”, 215), who starts again at offensive and defensive end. That trio has the experience and size to make the Chiefs hard for anyone to handle up front.

Giving the offense and defensive backfield some serious experience are returning starters Derek Richmond (6’2”, 180) and Henry Washington (6”1”, 175). Richmond, a senior, will

see action at both running back and wide receiver on offense and defensive back on the other side of the ball. Washington, a junior who had some nice games at running back and defensive back last season, is looking to repeat his success at those spots.

The big question is who will replace the irreplaceable Schanbacher at quarterback. Therein lays the key to the success of the Chiefs this season. Fortunately, the Chiefs have three players penciled in for quarterback duty. Unfortunately, the one who had the lead for the starting spot was injured in a scrimmage at Timberlake. The initial report was that senior Austin Hawkins sustained a broken collarbone. That sets the stage for a friendly battle between last season’s backup quarterback, junior Austin Huckabee and Medford transfer Tanner Bowman, a freshman.

Coach Schanbacher also mentioned Alex Castro, a sophomore who saw action a year ago.

The Chiefs will run a 3-2 defense and should be tough. Their offense won’t be as productive as last season, but should put points on the board, especially through the air. They will have all of the district teams gunning for them—including the rest of those teams: Seiling, Pond Creek-Hunter, Canton, Geary, Merritt, Ringwood, and Kremlin-Hillsdale.

There’s nothing like a Gold Ball to make a team want another. So the quest is on—until it ends, wherever that may be. Coach Schanbacher will be ably assisted in guiding the Chiefs on that quest by assistant coaches Matt Guffy and Rudy Ahdokobo.

back from the state play-offs with another Gold Ball?

Two years ago, the Tigers went to the play-offs and didn’t stop until they brought the Class C State Championship back with them. Last year, they went 9-3 on the year and won a first round play-off game before losing to Forgan.

Head Coach Brian Severin isn’t flat out declaring that the golden trophy is Timberlake’s, but he’ll tell you simply that the goal is to win it all again. He didn’t have to set that goal. Four players on that team two years ago set it themselves.

“We’re probably not as deep as we were that year,” said Coach Severin.

“But the players are very competitive and want to win.”

Coach Severin is starting his 18th year at Timberlake. His record is 135-66. He’ll be assisted by coaches Garrett Powell, Nate Ross, Chad Greb, and his son, Tyler Severin.

The numbers and experience bode well for the Tigers. Thirteen lettermen head up a squad of 22 players, which includes seven seniors. Seven starters return on offense and six on defense.

After the seniors, there are just two juniors. Sophomores number 10; and three freshmen complete the squad.

Kedric Jackson and Logan Latta will be most missed from last year’s team, but the returnees make the coaches smile. Six of the seven seniors come

back to start, most on both sides of the ball. Two of them provide the Tigers with a powerful ground and air attack that will be difficult to stop. Stetson Buller (5’10”, 180) rushed for 800 yards and scored 15 touchdowns last year at tailback. He’ll also start at a defensive back. A key to Timberlake’s success will be the continued good play of quarterback Coy Trout from a year ago. The 6’3”, 190-pound passer completed half of his passes last season for 2,500 yards and 30 touchdowns. He can tuck the ball and run, too.

play linebacker on defense. Mitchell Ballard (5’9”, 145) isn’t real big, but he’ll provide Trout with a very capable receiver. He’ll also start at defensive back.

Two more seniors, returning lineman starters in the line, give Timberlake a solid foundation up front on offense. Brandon Severin (5’11”, 220) and Sage

Powers (5’11”, 195) return to start at guard and center, respectively. Both didn’t start on defense, but this will they will do so, at defensive tackle and defensive end, respectively,

Brandon Buller (5’8”, 180), a junior who also started a year ago, fills out the offensive line at the other guard and will play nose guard on defense.

The seventh senior on the team didn’t start last year, but Casey Carson (6’3, 175) may do so on both offense and defense this season. He’ll provide a big target at an end position on offense and he’ll also start at a defensive end.

The veterans rule, but some newcomers are expected to contribute.

Freshmen Layne Flemming at cornerback and Adrian Carson at defensive end will get a chance to show what they can do.

Standing in the Tigers way of a District C-3 title are the Eagles of Deer Creek-Lamont. The match-up is set for Oct. 20 in Timberlake. The defending Class C state champs pose a problem, but not an insurmountable one.

Four teams in the district, which also includes Medford, Waukomis, Coyle, Covington-Douglas, Carney, and Southwest Covenant, will go to the play-offs. If they don’t claim the district title, the Tigers should certainly claim one of the other three advancing spots. That’s when the desire and talent of the Timberlake veterans will have to kick into overdrive.

Chieftains had a great football season last year, finishing 7-2. But by the margin of a single point, they suffered an unkind fate as the “odd man out” in the play-offs because two other teams in their district finished with 7-2 records. The district formula to advance two teams uses points and the Chieftains came up just short.

That’s a lot of incentive for the team to reach the play-offs this year, especially since the coaches feel that South Barber could have won at least one game, and maybe more, in the post season. The Chieftains last reached the play-offs in 2009 when they defeated Ashland before losing to Victoria.

He knows the team lost a lot of talent to graduation. Six seniors are gone, including three big linemen. Daniel Lambert (RG/DE), Kendall Clark (OL/DE), and Dylon Molz (DL) earned All-League honors and will be hard to replace. So will the 1,053-yard rushing of Matthew McMurry, the 1,354 passing yards and 21 touchdowns of quarterback Christian Johnson, and the special teams play of Corry Hostetler. All will be missed.

But the Chieftains return 13 players. Five seniors are among 10 returning lettermen. It’s a good mix with nine new players. All-League honorees Blake Wagenbach, Micah Polson, and Luke Yearout are among the returnees who will provide strong leadership.

It’s a young team. Just how well South Barber does this season will depend on how well the younger players

can step up behind the more experienced players. Senior Polson should take over the quarterbacking chores for the departed Johnston. Freshman Peter Yandel will get some snaps there also and may play more if he progresses quickly and the versatile Polson is needed more elsewhere.

Sophomores Logan Hitchcock and Taylor Donaldson will compete with Wagenbach at running back. A number of experienced receivers return, including Yearout, Connor Black, and Patrick Lambert. Wagenbach is also a very capable receiver.

Replacing last season’s offensive line and shoring up the defense will receive a lot of attention. The newcomers must step up.

of year,” said Coach Johnston. “We will have a lot of new people in starting positions. It will take a little while for us to jell as a team. I think we will be a lot stronger in the second half of the season.”

That should work to South Barber’s favor because the Chieftains will not have to face South Haven until Oct. 14.

Unfortunately, the meeting will be in South Haven.

In addition to South Haven, South Barber plays along with Argonia, Attica, Burrton, Caldwell, and Norwich in District 4 of Class 8 Man Division II.

Johnston is entering his 24th season at the helm of the Chieftains. He and assistant Matt Cantrell have worked together for 15 years and provide plenty of expertise and continuity with the South Barber football program. Just as importantly, both still get excited when football season rolls around.

With a little more luck than they had last season, the Chieftains could make the leap to the play-offs this year.

a disappointing season a year ago, finishing 3-6 overall and 0-3 in a very tough District 12 in Kansas’ Class 3A. The Indians face a stiff challenge this season with defending 3A State Champion Conway Springs still in the district.

Kingman and Chaparral are the other two district foes and could both be considered post-season caliber as they battle Medicine Lodge for the second play-off spot.

New Indians’ head coach Faron Kraft and his staff are looking at the tough schedule as a challenge and an opportunity for this year’s squad. Besides the district foes, the Indians

play in the Central Plains Conference or League which includes Garden Plaine, Belle Plain, Wichita Independent, Bluestem, Cheney, Douglass and Wichita Trinity Academy.

Coach Kraft moves to Medicine Lodge from northwest Kansas and is ably assisted by Chuck Dirks (WR/DB), Brock Bender (OL/DL) and John Cannon (RB/LB).

Returning lettermenThe Indians return 15 lettermen

from last year’s squad, including five two-way starters. This year’s squad is something of an anomaly with 27 members, including 21 (11 seniors and 10 juniors) from the upper two classes. With just four sophomores and two freshmen on this squad, Kraft

and his assistants have a big challenge to increase numbers in the younger classes. Ironically, the freshman class has just 11 boys in it; so hopefully, there will be some new class members in that group over the next couple of years.

The returning starters include seniors Jake Beecher (5’8”, 195, RB/LB), Bryan Hellman (6’5”, 200, QB/DB), Tyler Ward (5’10”, 140, WR/DB) and Kelvin Shinliver (6’0”, 210, FB/TE/LB). Junior running back and linebacker Bryant Wornkey (5’11, 180) will also likely start both ways.

about his first 16 or 18 players; but he knows they need to stay healthy. “We are looking forward to a great year,” said Coach Kraft. “The team accomplished a lot this summer and will be ready to go.”

The Indians open the season at home with Wichita Independent at 7 p.m. on Sept. 2. Their district games are the last three games on the regular schedule hosting Conway Springs, traveling to Kingman and hosting Chaparral on Oct. 27.

If they hope to make the playoffs, the Indians will probably have to win two of those last three. Watch the progress of this year’s Indians throughout the season!
