2011 Robert Morris Football Game Notes vs. Sacred Heart (10/29/11) - Page 3

Head Coach Joe Walton18th Season - Pittsburgh ’57

At the forefront of the football renaissance at RobertMorris University throughout its 18-year history is JoeWalton, who has built the Colonials from a fledglingprogram into one of the top Football ChampionshipSubdivision (FCS) teams in the region.

The one constant associated with the program,Walton was named the first head coach July 27, 1993. Hestarted the program from scratch, completing every-thing from hiring assistant coaches to purchasingequipment to recruiting student-athletes for the team’sinaugural season in 1994.

Walton’s fingerprints are all over the football pro-gram, and to prove that, RMU has played its homegames since 2005 in a stadium that bears his name.

During his tenure, Walton has led Robert Morris to the first Northeast Conferencechampionship in 1996, guided RMU to a perfect 10-0 season in 2000 and in 2010helped lead the Colonials to the NEC’s inaugural bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs withtheir league-high sixth regular-season championship.

“It’s hard to believe,” Walton speaks on how fast time has elapsed. “I’ve said thismany times before, and I mean it when I say that this situation is one of the bestthings that has ever happened to me in my life. It happened at the right time. Before this position became available, I felt I was too young to quit coaching, but Iwasn’t anxious to get back into pro football. When this came along, it was the per-fect fit. This situation was the perfect opportunity for me to continue to do what Ilike to do, and I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Under Walton’s tutelage, the Colonials have claimed outright NEC regular-seasontitles three times (1997, 1999, 2000) while sharing three others (1996, 1998, 2010).Walton led Robert Morris to back-to-back ECAC Bowl victories in 1996 and 1997,and in 1999 and 2000 he guided RMU to a pair of NCAA I-AA mid-major nationalcrowns according to Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette.

In 2010, Walton added to his legacy by engineering the Colonials on an eight-game winning streak for a share of the NEC regular-season title and the NEC’s firstbid in the NCAA FCS Playoffs. In the process he picked up his 100th career victoryin the collegiate ranks.

Game #2 • Robert Morris 35, Sacred Heart 31Saturday, September 11, 2010 • Fairfield, Conn.

Campus Field (Attendance: 2,076) - Quarterback Jeff Sinclair hit tight end Shadrae King with aneight-yard touchdown pass with just 17 seconds to play to help lift Robert Morris to a come-from-behind victory over Sacred Heart, 35-31, in the 2010 Northeast Conference opener for bothprograms.

Robert Morris trailed three times in the contest, including a pair of double-digit deficits, before the late game heroics of Sinclair and King helped propel the Colonials to victory.

Sacred Heart had taken a 31-28 lead with just 59 seconds to go when quarterback Dale Finkfound a wide open Sean Kessler for a 47-yard touchdown pass to cap a five-play, 76-yard driveand put the Pioneers back on top.

RMU got the ball back with 52 seconds remaining but had good field position after AnthonyColeman posted a 20-yard kickoff return to set up the Colonial offense at its own 40-yard line.

Running the hurry-up offense, Sinclair connected with wide receiver Jamie Cobb for a 27-yard gain to the Sacred Heart 33-yard line. Sacred Heart had jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter on the strength of a pair oftouchdown passes from Fink to running back Marcel Archer. The first, a three-yard touchdownpass, came with 1:47 left in the first quarter, while a six-yard connection for a score with 10:05 toplay before halftime gave the Pioneers a two-score advantage.

RMU battled back to tie it at the break, 14-14, with running back Myles Russ providing a 17-yard touchdown run and Sinclair hitting King for the first of three touchdowns on the afternoonwith a 12-yard score with just 37 ticks left on the clock in the first half.

The Long and The Short of It - Senior wide receiver Anthony Coleman, thanks to fourseasons as the starter at return specialist for Robert Morris, has put up some impres-sive numbers across the board. In addition to entering Saturday’s game against SacredHeart ranked sixth all-time at RMU in career all-purpose yards with 3,164, Colemanhas produced 65 plays for the Colonials over the last four years that have been at least20 yards or longer. Broke down, 48 of those 65 (73.8%) have come on kickoff returns, 15(23.1%) have come via receptions and five (7.7%) on punt returns. The 65 plays of 20yards or longer by Coleman are the most in school history, eclipsing the 62 former widereceiver Tyjuan Massey posted from 2002 to 2005.

Foot Joy - One of the most important aspects that junior Jeff Sinclair brings to thequarterback position at Robert Morris is his versatility. In a 45-14 victory over SaintFrancis (10/8), Sinclair posted a pair of touchdown runs, including a 64-yard run in thesecond quarter and a 22-yard scamper with 25 seconds left before halftime that gaveRMU a 35-0 halftime lead. In 25 career games, Sinclair has already rushed for 12 touch-downs. To put that in perspective, prior to Sinclair becoming the starter under centerat RMU, quarterbacks combined for 16 rushing touchdowns in the first 156 games ofthe program’s history.

New Balance - Redshirt freshman running back Deontae Howard earned his firstcareer start at halfback @ Albany (10/15), posting 18 carries for 49 yards, an average of2.7 yards per rush. Howard is the third different Colonial to start at halfback so far onthe 2011 campaign, joining true freshmen Duane Mitchell and Justin Brooks. Howardis the 19th different player to earn their first career start so far this season for RobertMorris.

An Important Position - Catching his first career touchdown pass @ Liberty (9/10) wassophomore tight end Vince Mongelluzzo, who hauled in a nine-yard touchdown pass inwith 10:25 remaining in the fourth quarter for his first career reception. One of themost important positions in head coach Joe Walton’s offense, Mongelluzzo is the 18thdifferent tight end in the 18-year history of the program to post a touchdown catch. Infact, Mongelluzzo is currently one of four tight ends in school history whose only catchis a touchdown, joining junior Tyler Digby and former Colonials Jeremy Wise (2002-05)and Sean McElhinny (2007-10).

Saturday Night Lights - Robert Morris hosted its first night game in the program’s 18-year history as part of the University’s Homecoming festivities Oct. 8, rolling to a 45-14win over in-state rival Saint Francis at Joe Walton Stadium. A total of 4,384 fans packed“The Joe” for the win over the Red Flash, the largest crowd in the seven-year history ofthe facility as well as the sixth official sellout since the venue opened in 2005. Thegame marked just the seventh time Robert Morris played a game with a kickoff after5:00 p.m., with the Colonials owning a record of 2-5 (.286) all-time in night games. Fourof RMU’s seven night games have come in the last three years. A look at the results ofthe program’s seven night games in school history:

Home Sweet Home - Slowly but surely, Robert Morris has learned to protect its hometurf at Joe Walton Stadium. Thanks to a 42-24 win over Central Connecticut State(11/6/10) that clinched a share of the 2010 Northeast Conference championship, RMUstretched its winning streak at “The Joe” to eight games, the longest winning streak atthe facility since opening the stadium in 2005. Despite a 19-13 setback to Dayton (9/3)in the 2011 season opener that snapped the eight-game surge, overall Robert Morrisowns a record of 18-16 (.529) in seven seasons at Joe Walton Stadium.
