After a 1-9 finish a year ago, the Duhawks are focused on bringing the program back to its’ glory days. NEW LOOK FOR LORAS FOOTBALL ... In addition to the changes made to the playbook, the Duhawks will also feature a new take on their classic uniform. At times this season, Loras will wear a new purple helmet in combination with their existing tradition colors, puple, gold, and white. Additionally, Helminiak has created a pride sticker program where student- athletes have the opportunity to showcase their achievements on their helmets. LORAS PICKED EIGHTH IN IOWA CONFERENCE ... The Iowa Conference coaches have picked the Duhawks to finish in eighth place this season, coming off a winless conference campaign in 2013. The position doesn’t worry Helminiak, however, because he knows that a winning program isn’t built overnight. More than 60 student-athletes new to Loras join the squad this fall and Helminiak is confident that fans will see results out of these newcomers. DUHAWKS BUILD CONFIDENCE WITH SCRIMMAGE WIN ... In a preview to the 2014 Loras College football season, the Duhawks took down Concordia University Wisconsin by a score of 13-10 in a two-quarter scrimmage Saturday afternoon in the Rock Bowl. The Duhawks limited the defending Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference champions to very few opportunities throughout the afternoon. The Duhawk offense looked balanced and fluid, as it was their first look against another team as they continue to learn new offensive coordinator Jake Olsen’s system. With added depth at all positions, the 2014 offense looks promising to become a threat in the Iowa Conference. On the defensive side of the ball, the team was led by junior Wes Bowers as he hauled in the only turnover of the afternoon with an interception. Throughout the scrimmage the Duhawks swarmed to the ball and pressured the Concordia Wisconsin quarterbacks. CRYSTAL-CLEAR HIGH-DEFINITION ... For the fans that are unable to attend Friday’s match, they’ll be treated to a first-class ticket to the first high-definition online stream produced by Loras College Athletics. During the offseason, thanks largely in part to an anonymous donation, the Loras College Athletic Communications Department upgraded its hardware and technology and will now provide high-definition broadcasts of its home contests all season long. 2014 ROSTER

LORAS FOOTBALLHEAD COACH - STEVE HELMINIAKSteve Helminiak enters his 22nd year as a football coach and his first as the Head Football Coach at Loras College.

Helminiak returned to Loras College in 2011, rejoining the Duhawk Football Staff as the Offensive Line Coach. A 1991 graduate from Loras College with a degree in business management, Helminiak played four seasons as an offensive and defensive lineman for Coach Bob Bierie, who is the all-time wins leader at Loras College. During those 11 seasons the Duhawk Football program went 64-45-1, a winning percentage of 59 percent.

After his playing career as a Duhawk, Helminiak joined Bierie’s staff as a student-assistant, working his way up to become the Offensive Line Coach and eventually the Offensive Coordinator at the conclusion of his first go-round with the Duhawks.

Helminiak spent 11 seasons (1990-2000) on Bierie’s staff and was his longest tenured assistant.

Prior to Helminiak’s return to Loras, he was the Head Football Coach at Southern Oregon University (2006-2010), a NAIA program. During his time at Southern Oregon, Helminiak steered the program through turbulent times. With no conference and only three NAIA programs on the west coast at the time, SOU played more NCAA Division II and NCAA FBS I teams than NAIA opponents. Helminiak compiled an 11-6 record versus NAIA opponents, including a 4-1 record against perennial NAIA power Azusa Pacific University, who is now a member of the NCAA Division II. Throughout his time at SOU, he coached one AFCA All-American, five VSN All-Americans, the 2009 NAIA Independent Offensive Player of the Year and 31 NAIA All-Independent Selections. Helminiak was also instrumental in starting the Raider Red Zone – the Football Alumni Club of Southern Oregon University. In the 2004 and 2005 seasons Helminiak served as the Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach at Rockford College. In those two seasons, Rockford posted back-to-back 7 win seasons, compiling a 14-6 overall record. In just two seasons, his offenses produced, one Nationally Ranked Quarterback – Passing Efficiency – 12th NCAA Division III, one Nationally Ranked Rusher – 21st NCAA Division III, one Nationally Ranked Rushing Offensive – 15th NCAA Division III, one All-Conference Most Valuable Lineman, 22 All-Conference Selections, and one Academic All-Conference Selection. On December 3, 2013, Helminiak was named the 27th Head Coach in Loras College History. In all, during Helminiak’s two stretches at Loras, he has coached two All-America Selections, one GTE Academic All-District Selection, three NCAA III All-West Region Selections, 17 All-Conference Selections (OL/TE’s only), and numerous Honorable Mention All-Conference selections. His Offensive Line units paved the way for 10 1,000 yard rushers, and the top two rushers in Loras College History, both of whom rank among the all-time leading rushers in Division III. Helminiak is also responsible for recruiting 14 All-Conference selections. Helminiak and his wife Kelli (Forde) (’98) live in Dubuque with their 5 children, Elizabeth, Emily, Kathryn, Joseph and Lauren.
