Freshman quarterback Robert Kelly had his best game so far this season in the Duhawks 27-24 win at Simpson. Kelly completed 30 of 49 passes for 304 yards and a touchdown to senior wide receiver Nate Even. In the win, 11 Duhawks caught passes from Kelly, spreading the around and making it harder for the Storm to defend. Most importantly, Kelly didn’t turn the ball over and converted 10 third down attempts, to Simpson’s three. Limiting turnovers this weekend against the University of Dubuque will be crucial, as the Spartans are tied for 109th nationally in turnovers gained. TURNOVERS WIN AGAIN ... In 2013, the Storm handed the Duhawks a 27-10 loss in the Rock Bowl. In the Duhawks two wins on the 2014 season they have forced a total of 11 turnovers, with seven coming against Elmhurst College and four coming last weekend at Simpson College. All four against the Storm came by way of interception, as seniors Mike Canevello, Dave Pirkle, and Robert Anderson, along with freshman Maurice Young all tabbed one pick last weekend. Young returned his 53 yards for a touchdown and helped seal the win. Loras is currently tied for 10th in NCAA Division III in turnovers with 21. Maurice Young is currently tied for eighth in NCAA Division III with five interceptions on the year. MOVING UP IN THE STANDINGS ... Last weekend marked the Duhawks’ first conference win in over two years. The last Iowa Conference victory for Loras was a homecoming game September 29, 2012 with a 28-25 win over Luther College. In addition, the last time Loras was victorious in a conference road game was on October 10, 2009 in a game right down the road against the University of Dubuque. The last time the Duhawks notched more than one conference victory in a season was in 2010 when Loras finished 4-4 in conference play and 5-5 overall. BEHIND ENEMY LINES ... The University of Dubuque comes in with a 2-5 record and a 1-3 record in the Iowa Conference. The Spartans pair of wins both came at home against Pacific University (16-10), and Simpson College (44-10). Offensively, the Spartans are senior quarterback Zach Fry, who has 140 passes on 235 attempts with 14 touchdowns, however he has thrown nine interceptions on the season. His favorite target is one of the nation’s best receivers in senior Tyler Rutenbeck, who has accumulated 47 receptions for 673 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Spartan ground game is led by freshman Alec Arvanitakis, who has rushed for 639 yards on the 2014 season. Defensively, UD is led by junior linebacker Trevor Stauner, who has totaled 83 tackles on the season, with 38 being solo stops. He’s followed closely by fellow linebacker, junior Blaine Snitker, who has added 69 tackles and two interceptions, to go along with a solo sack. Junior defensive backs Oscar White and Durrell Mitchell have also added two interceptions for the 2014 Spartan defense. LORAS FOOTBALLHEAD COACH - STEVE HELMINIAKSteve Helminiak enters his 22nd year as a football coach and his first as the head football coach at Loras College.

Helminiak returned to Loras College in 2011, rejoining the Duhawk football staff as the offensive line coach. A 1991 graduate of Loras College with a degree in business management, Helminiak played four seasons as an offensive and defensive lineman for coach Bob Bierie, who is the all-time wins leader at Loras College.

After his playing career as a Duhawk, Helminiak joined Bierie’s staff as a student-assistant, working his way up to become the offensive line coach and eventually the offensive coordinator at the conclusion of his first go-round with the Duhawks.

Helminiak spent 11 seasons (1990-2000) on Bierie’s staff and was his longest tenured assistant. During those 11 seasons, the Duhawk football program went 64-45-1, a winning percentage of 59 percent.

Prior to Helminiak’s return to Loras, he was the head football coach at Southern Oregon University (2006-2010), a NAIA program. During his time at Southern Oregon, Helminiak steered the program through turbulent times. With no conference and only three NAIA programs on the west coast at the time, SOU played more NCAA Division II and NCAA FBS I teams than NAIA opponents. Helminiak compiled an 11-6 record versus NAIA opponents, including a 4-1 record against perennial NAIA power Azusa Pacific University. Throughout his time at SOU, he coached one AFCA All-American, five VSN All-Americans, the 2009 NAIA Independent Offensive Player of the Year and 31 NAIA All-Independent selections. Helminiak was also instrumental in starting the Raider Red Zone – the Football Alumni Club of Southern Oregon University. In the 2004 and 2005 seasons, Helminiak served as the offensive coordinator/offensive line coach at Rockford College. In those two seasons, Rockford posted back-to-back 7-win seasons, compiling a 14-6 overall record. In just two seasons, his offenses produced one Nationally Ranked Quarterback – Passing Efficiency – 12th NCAA Division III, one Nationally Ranked Rusher – 21st NCAA Division III, one Nationally Ranked Rushing Offensive – 15th NCAA Division III, one All-Conference Most Valuable Lineman, 22 All-Conference Selections, and one Academic All-Conference selection. On December 3, 2013, Helminiak was named the 27th head coach in Loras College football history. In all, during Helminiak’s two stretches at Loras, he has coached two All-American selections, one GTE Academic All-District selection, three NCAA III All-West Region selections, 17 All-Conference Selections (OL/TE’s only), and numerous Honorable Mention All-Conference selections. His offensive line units paved the way for ten 1,000-yard rushers, and the top two rushers in Loras College history, both of whom rank among the all-time leading rushers in Division III. Helminiak is also responsible for recruiting 14 All-Conference selections. Helminiak and his wife, Kelli (Forde) (’98), live in Dubuque with their five children: Elizabeth, Emily, Kathryn, Joseph and Lauren.
