Transcript of Food Chains SOL 3.5 3 rd Grade Science Presentation by Elaine Bennett.
Producers
Make their own food
Plants are Producers They make their
food from the SUN, WATER, and NUTRIENTS in the soil
Consumers
Can’t make their own food Need to get food from other animals
or plants 3 types of Consumers
Herbivores Carnivores Omnivores
Consumers- Carnivores
Eat other animals (meat) Known as Predators- catch
and kill their Prey (the animal that is eaten)
Tigers Frogs (eat flies) Sharks
Food Chain
All of these organisms interact to form a food chain
Almost always stars with a plant (a producer)
An herbivore eats the plant, then a carnivore eats the herbivore
Grass mouse fox producer…consumer….consumer
Food Webs
Many animals are involved in Food Webs.
More than one consumer eats the same type of food.
Consumers also eat many types of foods.
Food Web Example
-Producer leaf, grass
-Consumer(herbivore)
caterpiller,cricket,mouse
-Consumer (carnivore)
robin, spider, fox, bear
-Decomposer fungi, bacteria
*remember, decomposers eat dead animals

Summary
The students learned that all of the organisms on Earth are connected through the food chain.
Humans are even part of it. We eat plants and animals. If we lived in the wild, we may become prey to larger animals (sharks)
What type of organisms eat dead plants and animals?
Pick one
Carnivores Omnivores Decomposers Herbivores
Nice Job!!
Quiz completed Don’t forget to visit the cool websites
about the food chain Visit the library and find a book about
your favorite animalWhat kind of food does it eat?Does anything eat that animal?
