MUSIC

Songwriting Music Theory

5 ingredients to a song: you will learn:

A text

A melody

A rhythmic groove

A harmonic element

An arrangement of sound that creates an overall impression

In Songwriting at Vrå Folk High School, we write songs “from scratch”. To write a song, we work with five ingredients.

There are countless traditions and styles which form the basis for how the five ingredients perform optimally together.

When the songwriting class creates “new,” we do so by studying and learning the know traditions and styles, so we are able to break them.

In practical terms, some hours do go to writing songs. Other hours go to listening to and learning about music. We will also take the time to arrange each other’s songs and play them in the practice room. Sometimes, we record the songs in the studio.

In Music Theory at Vrå Folk High School, you as a student will acquire a basic knowledge of what sound is.

Swing theory and other phenomena from the world of physics

You will get a deeper understanding of notations and learn nodes

You will get a deeper understanding of rhythm

You will be introduced to chords and harmony

The subject, to a large extent, is for those who want to “geek out” and learn about what goes on behind the music. It can be a good academic and theoretical input for those who want to look into a musical education after the Folk High School – or to those who want to understand the “formulas” behind the music listen to or even play. You can also join the subject in addition to playing music in practice.

This study gives you an understanding of rhythm. Including both the purpose of no-tation, but very much also with emphasis on how the rhythm is to be understood, trained and labelled.

We will attempt to find out and look at the whole body and the individual’s wellbeing. We will also talk about body ideals, selfie-culture, and what social media does to our perceptions of self and our bodies.

GROWING UP &SKILLS

Grow Up

“Grow Up” does not have any regular books or set teaching material that one needs to read or do. It is a practical and useful subject teaching you how to do things by yourself, and covers what one can do if:

I received a letter from the municipality. I do not have any money left in my bank account on the sixth day of the month. I have no job. I do not have a nice life that I want to share on Instagram. I am tired all the time. I do not know anything about the EU, or what they do. I am going to move and don’t know how to handle it.There are parliament or municipal elections and I want to vote. I would like to do sports or hobbies, but I cannot motivate myself.

The classes in “Grow Up” take place mostly at the school, but we also take day trips to other places. For example, we havevisited businesses and stopped by several educational institutions.

It is not required that you have any spe-cial prerequisites or specific challenges in order to partake in “Grow Up” classes. You only need to want to get better, take control of your life and be equipped for all the challenges that are awaiting you once you leave the Folk High School.

News

At “News”, we are up to date! This sub-ject deals with:

Keeping up with the world around usDiscussing media coverage of what is happening. Learning to take a stand on the news flow that constantly bombards us. Understanding how news occurs – and what causes something to go viral on e.g. social media. In principle, nothing too big or too small to be a case for us on News. We record both local, national and global trends. We follow, we doubt we discuss and take a position.

We start with the world as it is to-day – but we also draw historical and

socio-theoretical threads. We talk about the agendas and memos, about trends and doubt – and why small news can be large. We go behind the news and ask why something is seen and remembered – and something else forgotten.

You do not have to be a news-freak to join “News”. You can easily enjoy the lessons, even if you have never opened a newspa-per or watched the news on television. The course is for everyone, but also for those who dream of entering the Danish School of Media and Journalism or other commu-nity-related education.
