Focus: Introduction to art as reflected in nature and literature
During announcements: Look over the artistic quotations and star the ones that interest you the most.
Getting into the mindset of an artist Start viewing Rivers and Tides HW: Independent reading; no poetry
response this week, but please post your “big question” blog by Nov. 9th.
Focus: Interpreting the role of the artist During announcements: A painless and quiet
review of syntax Explanation of your next “Big Question” post Warming up the artistic brain and discuss
yesterday View Rivers and Tides HW: Independent reading (essay due in
less than two weeks); big question post.
You know you’re an artist when…
Is art immortal?
Focus: Defining the role of the artist During announcements: A little more
syntax…less painful than yesterday Important reminders Discussion of Rivers and Tides with a little
input from two Irish friends—Yeats and Joyce
Finish Rivers and Tides HW: Big question post; independent
reading and essay.
Class starts at exactly 9:29. 10 seconds late is still late, and if you need to go to the bathroom or grab our Monday snack, do so before 9:29.
Beverages are technically not allowed, but I look the other way as long as you keep them in your backpack or under your desk.
Keep up your excellent level of discussion—well done!
Bring anything you have that could possibly be used for art.
Ex: scisssors, glue, makers, paint (with newspaper to cover tables and floor), magazines/newspapers to cut up, etc. The more, the merrier!
Who are your favorite poets?
“The artist, like the God of creation, remains within or behind or beyond or above his handiwork, invisible, refined out of existence, indifferent, paring his fingernails.” --James Joyce
“The supreme question about a work of art is, out of how deep a vision of life does it spring?” --James Joyce
“Time drops in decay,Like a candle burnt out,And the mountains and woodsHave their day, have their day;” --Yeats
Focus: Examining different angles of creating a “portrait” for a writer
During announcements: The last of the syntax exercises for a little while (if you do well). This one will be graded.
