CHAIRMAN’S CHAT
The New Year is well on its way, the month of January having already flown past. The first
club meeting of the year was well attended which I hope is a good sign for the year. Actually,
the attendance at the club meetings has been so good that the Committee is worried that the
hall is getting too small. When I did the bookings for the year, I asked if a bigger venue was
available, but unfortunately, there wasn’t.
I went on Holiday in December and, as usual, took my camera along. The weather was great,
perhaps too good because there were no dramatic clouds or angry skies to make my seascapes
more exciting. I had to get up early to get to the sea before sunrise but, once up, I enjoyed
being out. All of my efforts resulted in two images which I liked. I wasn’t sure that they
would do well at club, so I put them aside. Then I saw a competition in the Times newspaper
asking for readers to submit their best holiday pictures. I sent one of the seascapes in, and
won a brand new Olympus 14.5 megapixel point and shoot camera! The picture editor of the
newspaper really liked the image so it was really satisfying. I am still not sure it I will submit
it at the Club though!
The other pictures I love to take at this time are the fashions at the J&B Met horserace in
Cape Town. They are also not really club pictures, but they are interesting.
We have had a number of new members over the past few months. Because we now have the
facility for new members to pay and join online, it is possible for someone to become a member
almost anonymously. The danger is that the new member may feel neglected or unwelcome. I
would like to emphasise to any new member, or any member for that matter, that the
committee members and any of the senior members are always willing to help.
See you at the next meeting
Colin

Marievale
Good for bird photography with the
occasional view of otters and crabs.
There are 5 or so hides along the
different roads. The roads are pretty
unkept and heavy duty vehicles do travel
them for mining in the area.

easiest from Johannesburg via the N3

(Glenroy/Kliprivier) offramp and turn left.
Follow this road for approximately 20 km
to a T-junction and turn right towards
Nigel. Follow this road through Nigel until
you see a sign on the left indicating the
sanctuary. The sanctuary is approximately 3
km further on after passing the SANDF
(defence force) base.
Rondebult Bird photography. There are 3 main
hides. Good for morning photography.
Rondebult is a short drive (approx. 25
minutes) from Johannesburg International
Airport and within an hours drive from
Pretoria. The sanctuary is open daily
throughout the year from 07h00 to 17h00
and is found by heading south from
Johannesburg on the N3 highway. The
sanctuary is well signed posted and after
turning left at the R103/R554 (Heidelberg /
Alberton road) off-ramp and the sanctuary
is on the right hand side of the road after
approximately 9 km. The entrance is

Adam and Eve
A little girl asked her father,
"How did the human race start?"
The father answered,
"God made Adam and Eve and they had children, and so all mankind was made."
Two days later the girl asked her mother the same question. The mother answered,
"Many years ago there were monkeys from which the human race evolved."
The confused girl returned to her father and said,
"Dad, how is it possible that you told me the human race was created by God, and Mom said they developed
from monkeys?"
The father answered,
"Well, dear, it is very simple.
I told you about my side of the family and your mother told you about hers."
