HARVARD – If the box officecirca 2012 wasn’t proof enough, atraveling Abraham Lincoln libraryexhibit – perched in Harvard forthe next six weeks – is reaffirmingthe country’s deep interest in thetop-hatted historical figure.
“Lincoln: The Constitution andthe Civil War” is in the fifth year ofan extended six-year tour across 250sites. This week, it landed at Har-vard Diggins Library, 900 E. McKin-ley St., its only stop in McHen-ry County, where it will remainthrough Sept. 5.
“I think Lincoln has always beena figure of great interest to Amer-icans,” said Susan Brandehoff,project director at the AmericanLibrary Association’s Public Pro-grams Office. “People feel differentways about him. And I think this
exhibit ... tries to objectively exam-ine how he approached all the re-ally important issues that he facedduring his presidency.”
Originally sent on the road in2009 for a 50-site tour, the exhibitwas backed by the National Endow-ment for the Humanities for anoth-er 200 sites in 2011 based on the re-sponse from libraries and patrons.
“We’ve had high attendance fig-ures,” Brandehoff said. “All the librar-ies are doing programs, and we’ve hadreally good attendance at programs.It’s been a very successful exhibit.”
The American Library Associa-tion worked with NEH and the Na-tional Constitution Center to makethe exhibit happen.
Harvard Diggins library staff ap-plied to bring the exhibit to town in2011 after the relaunch.
They were given a 2014 date – to-ward the back end of the tour, whichwill end in December 2015.
“We thought 2014 was so faraway,” said Karen Sutera, directorat Harvard Diggins.
Volunteers helped set up theexhibit after its arrival this week.Sutera said she’s excited to see thereception from the community. It in-cludes interactive media elements,including viewing military battlesthrough an 1860s box camera.
The library will hold a musical per-formance to accompany the display.Chris Vallillo will perform “AbrahamLincoln in Song” at 2 p.m. The pro-gram – which is free – combines nar-ration, storytelling and music.
It’s another step toward present-ing Lincoln in his entirety – a taskBrandehoff said is noble.
“I think he gets painted with abroad brush, and this is an exhibitthat gets behind that persona he hasfor Americans and really investi-gates what did happen during hispresidency,” she said.

Easy as A-Bee-Sting

WOODSTOCK – Don Burdadoesn’t go to meetings of the North-ern Illinois Beekeepers Associationanymore. Too crowded.
The Woodstock-based, veteranbeekeeper preferred the more inti-mate feel of meetings held in the mid-dle of last decade, when 15-or-so peo-ple would sit around a table and talkstrategy. Now, the meetings drawcrowds of more than 100, he said.
The days when beekeeping was asecret trade reserved for a brave feware – in McHenry County as in much
of Illinois – quickly disappearing.“With all the media coverage on
colony collapse disorder, people aremuch more aware nowadays on thebee’s importance to humankind,”said Steve Chard, supervisor of theapiary inspection program at the Illi-nois Department of Agriculture.
Only one case of colony collapsedisorder – which, as the name sug-gests, wipes out entire colonies ofbees – was ever confirmed in Illi-nois. But regardless of the threat’ssignificance, reports of CCD acrossthe country got people talking about

the importance of bees and re-invigorated public interest inmanaging them, Chard said.
“People are just darn in-trigued with bees,” he said.
The number of registeredbeekeepers in the state hasmore than doubled in the pastdecade, from 1,117 in 2003 to2,519 in 2013, according to theIllinois Department of Ag-riculture. The latter figurerepresents a significant jumpfrom 2012, when 1,825 beekeep-ers were registered in Illinois,and the highest number of Il-linois beekeepers since 1990,when 2,705 were registered.
Some beekeepers have onlyrecently discovered they arerequired to register, whichcould play a factor in the in-creases. But Chard said thatdoesn’t account for the entire-ty of the bump.
Burda, who owns Home-stead Orchard in Woodstockwith his wife, noticed the in-creases in about 2006, whenstudents from a new McHen-ry County College programstarted joining the beekeeperclub’s monthly meetings at theMcHenry County Farm Bu-reau.
“You go back maybe three,four years, there were so manypeople that we couldn’t fitthem into the room,” he said.“You’d be standing outside,
trying to hear.”The meetings have since
been moved to a conferenceroom at the college, but Burda– favoring the tight-knit feel ofgroups past – doesn’t bother.
He is, however, an advocatefor the transformative impactof the bees, which he said putshim at an advantage at his or-chard.
Burda’s main focus is onproducing fruit, a task forwhich he employs the help ofhoney bees, whose honey healso bottles and sells. He wasreminded how important theyare this spring when his cher-ry trees blossomed early – be-fore he’d received his yearlyshipment of the natural polli-nators.
“I have no bees to pollinate,so I have to depend on wildbees to pollinate,” he recalled.“As I stand there, observing,there are very few wild bees todo that. As a result, we prob-ably lost two-thirds of ourcherry harvest – due to lack ofbees.”
Honey bees pollinate abouta third of the plants that pro-duce food humans consume,Chard said.
That fact, and the fact wildbee populations continue todwindle nationwide, placesa further importance on bee-keepers.
There are 102 registered,active beekeepers in McHen-ry County, compared to 218 inLake County and 18 in Boone
County, according to the Illi-nois Department of Agricul-ture.
In McHenry County, if in-terest in MCC’s program isany indicator, the number willcontinue to rise, said ClaudiaTerrones, the college’s coordi-nator of personal developmentprograms.
MCC has offered threebee keeping courses eachspring since 2006. The class-es are noncredit and providedthrough the continuing edu-cation department. Between10 and 20 people typicallyattend each class, Terronessaid.
“There’s a huge interest inbeekeeping in McHenry Coun-ty,” she said.

Road salt pinch hits home

Highway and public works de-partments statewide are scram-bling to secure supplies of roadsalt after learning a number ofthem were dropped from Illinois’annual bid.
Summer is typically when localgovernments buy salt by the tonthrough the Department of CentralManagement Services, the stateagency in charge of procuringsupplies in bulk to lower the cost.But CMS told a number of govern-ments statewide about a week anda half ago no salt companies sub-mitted bids to resupply them.
If they can’t find vendors, nextwinter could be a slippery one fordrivers in McHenry County andelsewhere.
A likely reason for the short-age is the demand part of the lawof supply and demand – it’s wayup, given the brutal winter wejust survived stretched salt sup-plies not just in the Midwest but inmuch of the country as well.
The McHenry County Divi-sion of Transportation is in agood position to keep its 550 lane
miles clear for the start of winter,Maintenance Superintendent EdMarkison said. It has 5,500 tonson hand at its rural Woodstockheadquarters, and a typical wintercan range between 8,000 and 10,000tons. But it was one of the govern-ments that did not get a bid.
“It’s definitely a worry. I’ve beendoing this for 23 years, and we cannever predict what Mother Nature isgoing to bring us from year to year.The best we can do is try to be as pre-pared as possible,” Markison said.

forcing them to scramble to findalternatives. The winter thatfollowed was one of the snowi-est since the National WeatherService started keeping records.
Increased demand, of course,not only makes salt or anyproduct harder to get but alsoincreases the cost, Crystal LakePublic Works Director VictorRamirez said. The city, like thecounty, did not get a bid.
“Those locations that didget [bid] offers were told thatthe per-ton price went up to be-tween $70 and $140 a ton. Lastyear we paid $59,” Ramirez said.
Ramirez said the $257,000the city budgeted for roadsalt has fortunately given itthe wiggle room to cover costincreases. Crystal Lake hasabout 1,000 tons on hand forits 165 lane miles and antici-pates needing 4,000 tons to getthrough next winter.
The city of McHenry alsofound itself without a road saltbidder and presently only hasabout 500 tons, but the city willbe able to get at least 2,400 tonsfrom its supplier last year,Public Works Director JonSchmitt said. The contract thecity signed in 2013 containeda renewal clause that allowedMcHenry to secure the amountthis year, at a price not to ex-ceed 5 percent more than the$58.96 per ton it paid.
That would give the cityjust less than the 3,000 tons itpredicts it will need next win-ter to keep its 125 lane milesclear, but the city still wants acushion, Schmitt said.
McHenry is knocking downits bid from 1,600 to 1,000 tonsas CMS is preparing to sendout a second bid for any of thegovernments who did not getany salt.
McHenry County last weeksubmitted a bid on its own,independent of CMS, pricingout quantities of 5,000, 8,000 or10,000 tons, according to countyrecords. Crystal Lake also de-cided to bid for 4,000 tons on itsown and not go through CMS.
Going solo may give thecity more flexibility and im-prove its odds, Ramirez said.
“We also felt that possiblerequesting on an individualbasis, and for a much smalleramount than the [CMS] ag-gregate, we may have a bettershot at being selected by one ofthe firms and possibly gettinga good bid,” Ramirez said.

HUNTLEY – Solicitorswanting to sell servicesthroughout Huntley neigh-borhoods now will have to un-dergo an in-depth backgroundcheck and pay a new permitfee before visiting residents’doorsteps.
Weekly complaints fromresidents about solicitors anda recent uptick in door-to-doorroofers after the spring thun-derstorms motivated Huntleyofficials to tighten regulationson solicitation, said DeputyPolice Chief Michael Klunk.
The Huntley Police De-partment will enforce thenew regulations after VillageBoard members unanimouslyapproved the updated solicitor
rules during a meeting July 24.“The new rules are a little
more strict,” Klunk said. “Thebig difference really is the feesinvolved and the fingerprint-ing process that we didn’tdo in the past. It’s a more in-depth background check.”
Each solicitor, even onesrepresenting the same compa-ny, will have to be fingerprint-ed, allowing police to thor-oughly verify a salesperson’sbackground.
The solicitor also will haveto cover the costs of the finger-printing and pay a $25 permitapplication fee. The total costscould equal up to $60, Klunksaid.
Commercial canvassers,temporary merchants andpeddlers selling productsfrom public places also are in-
cluded in the expanded regu-lations. The minimum penal-ty for violating the ordinanceincreased from $5 to $50.
Huntley hadn’t updated itssolicitation ordinance sincecreating one in the late 1990s.In the past, solicitors under-went a minimal backgroundcheck with police and didn’tpay permitting fees.
Door-to-door solicitors alsoseem to visit Huntley morefrequently because neigh-boring communities alreadyhave deeper backgroundchecks and fees placed onthem, Klunk said.
In 2013, the village issued378 solicitor permits, a signif-icant increase from the 174permits issued in 2012, policerecords show.
In committee meetings ear-
lier this month, village trust-ees and staff said the tighterregulations are meant to keepneighborhoods safer and dis-courage less reputable solici-tors from knocking on doors.
“Although the rules andregulations to solicit door todoor will be more strict, thecode will provide a safer en-vironment for residents,” As-sistant Village Manager LisaArmour said during a boardmeeting last week.
Similar to the old rules, thepolice can deny an applicantif a solicitor has been convict-ed of a felony within the pastfive years, previously violat-ed the village’s solicitationordinance or had a permit re-voked.
The new regulations takeeffect immediately.
