WHEREAS it is by the Northern ustratia Act 1926, amongst other things, enacted that, subject to that

Act, all laws in force in the Territory on the proclaimed day shall, so far as applicable, continue in force in North Aus- tralia and in Central Australia, but that any such laws, other than Acts of the Parliament of the Commonwealth, shall have effect in North Australia as if they were laws of Central Australia, and may be altered or repealed by O rdinances made in pursuance of this Part:

And whereas it is by the said Act further enacted that, where 0nÿ law which is continued in force in North Australia or Central Australia by virtue of the foregoing provisions is a law of the Goramonwe ,ith, and any .power or function is by that law vested in any officer in relation to any State, or in relation to the Northern Territory, that power or function shall, in relation to North Australia and to Central Australia, be vested in and exercised by such officer as the Governor - General directs:

ACQUISITION OF SMALL ARMS AMMUNITION FACTORIES AT FOOTSCRAY VICTORIA.

W HEREAS pursuant to an agreement dated the 19th April, 1924, the Commonwealth of Australia entered

into a contract with the Colonial Ammunition Company Limi- ted a company registered in England for the manufacture and supply to the Commonwealth of Australia of small arms am- munition from factories of the company situate at Footscray Victoria

And whereas it is desirable that the manufacture of small arms ammunition be undertaken by the Commonwealth and it has been arranged with the Colonial Ammunition Company (Australia) Limited (to which company the Colonial Ammu- nition Company Limited has transferred its business rights and liabilities) should sell to the Commonwealth and that the Commonwealth should purchase as a going concern the said business of the Colonial Ammunition Company (Australia) Limited ( hereinafter called " the said company ") carried on

at its premises and factories together with the said company's land and all factories and other improvements and all plant equipment machinery stock and apparatus whatsoever inci- dental to such business at present on the said company's premises.

The Governor -General . in Council therefore approves of authority being granted pursuant to the provisions of section 63 of the Defence Act 1903 -1918 for the purchase by the Commonwealth, for the total sum of £150,000 (with interest at the rate of 5 per centum per annum on the balance for the time being outstanding) of the said company's business car- ried on at Footscray aforesaid together with the said com- pany's land premises and factories and other improvements and all plant equipment machinery stock and apparatus whatsoever incidental to such business And further that such purchase may operate as from and after the 31st day of December, 1926, and as from and after such date the agree- ment dated the 19th April, 1924, shall be cancelled.-(Ex. (a) The freehold of all that piece -of land containing six acres three roods twenty -one perches and four- tendis of a perch, being part of Crown allotments 3 and 4, section 15, Parish of Cut -paw -paw, and being the whole of the land comprised in certificate. of title; volume, 3371, folio 674166, together with the easements specified in such certificate of title.

(b) The unexpired leasehold interest created by inden- ture of lease dated the twenty -eighth day of May, 1889, from Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria to the Colonial Ammunition Company Limited for the term of nine hundred and ninety -nine years from the twenty -eighth day of May, 1889, in all that piece or parcel of land containing an area of five acres, more or.less, being part of Crown allotment 2, section 15, Parish of Cut -paw -paw, County -of Bourke, Sta.e of Vic- toria, Commonwealth of Australia : Commencing at a po nt bearing distant 360 degs. 100 links and 90 degs. 4,100 links from the south- western corner of Crown allotment 2, section 15, Parish of Cut- paw -paw; thence by lines bearing 360 degs. 500 links, 90 degs. 1,000 links. 180 degs. 500 links, and 270 degs. 1,000 links to the commencing point.

CENTRAL AUSTRALIA.

PASTORAL LANDS OPEN TO APPLICATiON IN TERMS OF CROWN

LANDS ORDINANCE 1924 -1927.

APPLICATIONS for pastoral leases of the lands described in schedule hereunder will be received at the Denart-

nieut of Home and Territories, Melbourne. or the Lands Office, Darwin, on or before the 28th June, 1927.

Any lands riot taken up on the 28th June, 1927, shall remain open to application as advertised, and may be allotted by the Commission to any person who applies, at the rentals and on the conditions as set out in the schedule hereunder.

Date of expiry of leases. --30th June, 1965. The rent shall be subject to re- appraisement every ten

years, and during the first ten years of the lease shall be at the rates as set out in schedules above referred to.

All authorized improvements on the lands to be leased shall remain the property of . the present owners. and shall be paid for at a valuation to be fixed by the Commission.

If necessary. one Half of the total area of the lease may be reá "med on the 30th June. 1947.

The first year's rent. together with lease and registration fee of £1 10s., must be deposited with application.

RESERVATIONS.

1. The lease will contain the reservations provided for in the said Ordinance, being- -

(a) a rieht of entry and inspection; (b) all minerals; (c) a power of resumption.

The power of resumption can he exercised on six (6) months' notice where the land is required far publie purposes. Rini as for the use of the aboriginal native inhabitants nf the Northern Territory, defence. forest. mineral and gold mining. travelling, stork, recreation and amusement grounds, rneds, tramways, railways or railway stations, water eonser- vetion works. or other like purposes. and two (2) years' notice when the land is required for any other purpose.

Nom- When the land is resumed for cultivation purposes, two (21 rears' notice of resumption shall be given : and in the case of pastoral leases, the land resumed shall not include the head station. or any of the leased land within 5 miles thereof. or the principal watering place on the land.

(d) all timber and timber trees. and all trees producing bark, resin. nr valuable substances;

(e) in favour nf the aboriginal inhabitants of the North- ern Territory.

COVENANTS.

2. rnvenants and conditions will be .inserted in the lease, as follows: -

The premises consist of a drill hall 70 feet x 40 feet and five rooms, with an area of about 35 perches.

The lessee will be required to pay all rates and taxes in addition to rent; to pay rent monthly in advance unless other- wise approved; to insure the premises against fire in the name of the Commonwealth for £1,000; to keep the premises in good order and condition, and to yield same up upon the expira- tion or determination of the tenancy in as good repair and condition as the saine are now in (reasonable wear and tear and damage by fire, storm, tempest, flood, or earthquake ex- cepte() ; to permit any responsible officer of the Common- wealth to enter and inspect the premises at all reasonable times; not to assign, underlet, or part with the possession of the premises without the consent of the commonwealth; and to state for what purposes the premises will be used.

The premises may be leased for a longer period provided the Commonwealth shall have the right to determine the lease at any time after the expiration of the term certain without payment of compensation to the lessee, should the premises be required for Commonwealth purposes.

The lessee may, on or before the expiration of the lease, remove all fixtures or erections erected or set up by him unless other arrangements shall have been made with the lessor.

ç IE following promotions are provisional and subject to appeal by officers to the Public Service Board of Commissioners, and, where

consequent upon another provisional promotion, shall be dependent upon the latter being confirmed. Appeals should be forwarded

to the Public Service Inspector in the State in which the promotion is to l,e made to reach him within fourteen days of the date of the

notification, and the ground of appeal must be as prescribed in section 50 of the Commonwealth Public Service Act, viz.:- - (a) Superior efficiency ; or (h) equal efficiency combined with seniority.

Officers stationed in remote districts may forward appeals by telegraph. An appellant shall without delay forward a copy of his

appeal to the Chief Officer of the Department in which the vacancy exists.

The range of salary indicates the classified value of a posi- tion, but appointments may be made at any salary within such range.

Successful applications must comply with the provisions of the Superannuation Act 1922-1924.

At offices where quarters are shown, a deduction at the rate of 10 per cent. of the minimum salary of the position will be made, unless otherwise stated.
