Flu Shots Still Available at Concentra Urgent Care Centers

DALLAS – January15, 2013 – While many public health departments and hospitals are experiencing

a surge in demand for flu shots, Concentra, a subsidiary of Humana Inc., is reporting an available

quantity of flu vaccines available at its 330 national Concentra Urgent Care medical centers.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that 47 states are experiencing

widespread flu activity, and an estimated 128 million doses of the flu vaccine have been

administered this month, nearly 95 percent of the original doses provided1. Concentra Urgent Care

has doses available at locations across the nation, with no appointment necessary.

Doctors continue to urge every person to protect against the highly contagious illness by getting an

annual flu shot. Experts agree that a flu vaccine is the best defense against contracting the flu virus

and has shown to reduce an individual’s chance of getting the flu by up to 90 percent in healthy

adults. The CDC confirmed a sharp increase in the number of flu cases, with an estimated 76

percent of cases attributed to the new influenza A (H3N2) virus1. This year’s flu vaccine includes

inactive strains of influenza B, and influenza A (H1N1) and (H3N2) viruses.

Influenza, or the flu, is an extremely contagious respiratory infection and often includes symptoms

like high fever, cough, and full body aches. Flu symptoms are more severe than those of colds and

can cause severe complications, and can cause as many as49,000 deaths a year2. The flu is mostly

spread through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza, and touching contaminated surfaces.

Adults may be able to transmit the virus to others days before they even know they are sick, as well

as while they are sick.
