The principle:

Gas flows by a heated sensing

element and causes cooling

down of the element by the

mass flow (molecules)

Temperature:

Measurement is based on a

Pt 100, an additional non-hea-

ted sensor is used as a reference.

Amount of heat:

The amount is direct related to

the mass flow.

COMBIMASS flowmeter measure directly the standard volumetric flow or the mass flow of the gas respectively. No pressure and temperature compensation are necessary.

COMBIMASS® sensors for thermal gas flow measurement are designed for • minimal pressure loss• are rugged, corrosion-resistant• and require minimal maintenance• have no mechanical moving parts

COMBIMASS® sensors are characterized by• high-precision resistors• minimal drift of the raw signal• excellent long-term stability all this even under harsh operating conditions and at high temperatures.

The COMBIMASS® flowmeter measure the flow rate • of compressed air, supply and process gases• of pure gases and gas mixtures• of clean and sterile gases• of dirty, moist or corrosive gases• of flammable and toxic gases in all kind of industries for the most diverse applications.

The high-performance gas flow meters measure • directly the normal volumetric or the gas mass flow • unaffected by pressure and temperature fluctuations• with a turndown ratio up to 1000 : 1, an accuracy up to 1%• at process temperatures up to 270 °C, operating pressures up to 63 barand guarantee always precise and reliable results even for difficult measuring tasks.

Requirements to use Thermal Mass Flowmeter

Technical Basics

6

The COMBIMASS® flowmeter detects at one point the flow

• fully turbulent flow• regular flow profile• no flow pulsations• no piping pulsations• static gas composition

Otherwise detected flow can have an error of more than 30%.Different types of Flow Conditioner and Condensate Traps can improve the installation situation and so the final accuracy.

There are different electronic modules:

• COMBIMASS® master• COMBIMASS® multi• COMBIMASS® I.S. interface

There are different types of field housings:

•Field housing for remote application with a graphic display 24 VDC or 230 VAC•Electronic cabinet 24 VDC or 230 VAC, for EEx ia instruments, master or multi

There are different types of sensors (depending on nominal pipe size and gas speed):

12 mm sensor18 mm sensor25 mm sensor

Each sensor can be delivered as a single point or a multi-point sensor (for large nominal diameters, rectangular ducts or insufficient straight inlet and outlet pipe sections/ flow profile distortions).

The No. of pins is in general 2. 1-Pin and 1 ½-Pin will not be supplied any more.

Variable operating conditions and mixed gases are a challenge for the COMBI-MASS® Flare Gas Measurement System. Compensation is done by a heat transfer sensor.

• H2-inline-compensation, mixed gas lab calibration possible at CAMASS®Calibration Centre and on site• inline validation system, flow conditioning, multi-point measuring systems• direct mass measurement, independent on pressure and temperature, • easy installation, measuring range 1000 : 1 at minimal pressure loss• corrosion-resistant sensors, insensitive to dirt

The flare burns clearly with any gas composition. At any time the thermal mass meter shows the correct mass flow because the flow effect caused by changing gas composition is compensated by a heat transfer sensor.
