Adapting to the Changing World of Office Based Anesthesia”

Presented by Dr. Deepak Krishnan, DDS, FACS

The environment for office based anesthesia, especially the operator-anesthetist model, faces many challenges

now and in the future, including but not limited to:

• The liability, legal, and legislative environment for dental office based anesthesia is becoming more challenging.

• The competitive business environment from other practice models and the pressures of declining insurance reimbursement is increasing.

• The aging of the population, increasing medical complexity of patients, and growing lists of medications and drug interactions.

• Worsening drug shortages.

• The opioid addiction and abuse crisis.

• Increasing difficulties in residency programs getting adequate anesthesia training for their residents.

• Increasing post-graduate training requirements, especially in regard to emergency preparation, but also for new anesthetic agents and techniques.

• Increasing patient expectations for adequate pain control, sedation, and anesthesia.

Dr. Deepak Krishnan, DDS, FACS is a dynamic, entertaining, and popular up-and-coming speaker on the national dental anesthesia lecture circuit. He is speaking for FDSA for the first time, and brings a fresh perspective on current and pertinent issues facing dentists and oral surgeons practicing office based sedation and general anesthesia.

Dr. Krishnan is director of the University of Cincinnati’s Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program. He is an associate professor of Surgery at the College of Medicine, University of Cincinnati, where he teaches and maintains a private practice. He is past president of the Ohio Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and current president of the Ohio Dental Society of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Krishna’s clinical and research interests are in ambulatory anesthesia, anesthesia and surgical simulation training, orthognathic and reconstructive surgery, and trauma and pediatric surgery. He brings a new thought provoking voice to the current and future issues facing dental providers of office anesthesia.
