The state of Kansas has added a Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day blog on the Kansas Transportation Online Community (KTOC) at http://ktoc.net/Default.aspx.  A total of 20 people from various organizations blogged on ways to put the brakes on fatalities from Sept. 14 to Oct. 9, 2009.  Some of the bloggers included Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), Secretary Deb Miller, Governor Mark Parkinson, Trauma Coordinator at Storemont Vail HealthCare Darlene Whitlock, Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) Technical Trooper Tim McCook, Sgt. Lance Smith with the Reno County Sheriff's Dept., State Director of Safe Kids Kansas, Cherie Sage and one of the founders of Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day, Larry Emig, a KDOT retiree.    

Nearly 700 Kansas Kids ages 5-13 particpated in a safety poster contest with 18 children receiving regional and statewide recognition.  The following are the Kansas statewide poster contest  winners in the three age groups:

Cities and counties across Kansas were invited to sign local proclamations in support of Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day.  Organizations represented along with the KDOT on Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day Committee included the Kansas Highway Patrol, AAA of Kansas, Kansas Contractors Association, Kansas Corporation Commission, Federal Highway Administration, Kansas Turnpike Authority, the Kansas Society of Professional Engineers (KSPE) and the Transportation and Development Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers.  The Committee Chairperson was Kim Stich of KDOT.

Local law enforcement agencies are joining a national effort on Saturday to cut down on traffic fatalities. "Put the Brakes on Fatalities" promotes safer driving in an attempt to attain zero preventable traffic deaths. In a typical year, two people die each day on Wisconsin roads, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.
