FLORIDA BERMUDA MOOSE ASSOCIATION Courier VOLUME 2009 ISSUE 20 JUN / JUL 2009 TALLAHASSEE CHAPTER 1103 CELEBRATES 60TH ANNIVERSARY TALLAHASSEE, Florida - On April 24, 1949, Tallahassee Florida Chapter 1103 of the Women of the Moose was instituted. On April 25, 2009, the chapter celebrated its 60th Anniversary with special guest speaker Jan Fregulia, Executive Director of Moose Charities. Jan congratulated Tallahassee Chapter on surviving successfully through the years. She also talked about the importance of ensuring the success of Mooseheart and Moosehaven during these critical times. Showing their love for the Mooseheart Child City and School as well as Moosehaven, the chapter members presented Jan with a check for $5,000 for Moose Charities. Jan also received a check from District 15 for $3,265 for Gimme Five. Tallahassee Chapter 1103 also presented Jan (pictured at right with the Chapter’s 2008-2009 Board of Officers) with a chapter T-shirt which states “WOTM are Women on a True Mission”. It is safe to say that Jan was overcome with emotion by this generosity. The 60th Anniversary Celebration also included a slide show presentation of the various functions put on by the Tallahassee Chapter of the Women of the Moose. The evening culminated in an award show similar to the “Oscar” award shows. The chapter presented “Rose” awards to those co-workers who contributed greatly to the success of the 2008-2009 chapter year. The recipients received a chocolate rose in heartfelt thanks for their volunteer efforts. MESSAGE FROM THE REGIONAL MANAGER

The following thoughts of John Capes, Director of Moosehaven Operations, are reprinted with his permission. They originally appeared in the May, 2009, Moosehaven newsletter. I believe this message of optimism is timely and worthy of being shared with everyone, and not just the Moosehaven residents. Fraternally, Rodney Hammond, Regional Manager

"Old or young, we're on our last cruise." Robert Louis Stevenson. Let's make it meaningful.

We all want our lives to mean something but meaning is not something you stumble across, like the answer to a riddle or the prize in a treasure hunt. It is something you build into your life.

Doing so requires fuel. Happiness is that fuel. Take it away and nothing happens. Happiness has two frames ... the present and the future. To examine this, make a list of the 25 things you need to be happy ... don't hold back. A typical list might include: a million dollars, a round the world cruise, a mansion, healthy children, a happy marriage, and a yacht.

I’ll admit, there are some great things on this list but will their acquisition make you happy? That depends on what happiness means to you. You're certainly not going to be happy about the things you don't have. How many of the things on your list do you have? If only a few of them or even none, then you're saying, "My happiness depends on getting X, Y and Z." What do you do about being happy in the meantime?

Now, make a second list of the 25 greatest blessings currently in your life. Typical things on this list include: I have hands, I have feet, I have eyes, I am alive, I have children, I have a good friend, I have food to eat, I have a place to sleep, I am relatively sane.

Which of your two lists has better things on it? Or to ask this in another way ... would you give up your eyes for a million dollars? How about your legs for a yacht? It is probably the second list.

So if you already have a list of incredible blessings and are grumpy and dissatisfied, why should you believe that you would be happy if you had more things? The truth of the matter is that happiness is the natural state of a human being. Watch a baby for a few minutes. They don't seem to have too much trouble being happy. Yet, we are so consistently programmed to look for the bad or to take our blessings for granted, that we become oblivious to all the interesting, pleasurable and good things around us.

The trick of it is to get into the habit of looking for good things, instead of griping all day about what's going wrong. In boot camp, I was taught how to instinctively do things I'd never done before. Perhaps, we need a boot camp to form the same habits in happiness. Human beings live in time. It's not enough for people to just feel good about the present moment; they also need to feel optimistic about the future. This optimism is called "joy."

Joy comes from feeling that we are doing something with our life that will give it meaning forever. This kind of joy comes when you feel that you are growing in wisdom, making a difference in other people's lives or contributing to something good.

When people think they are just cogs in a machine or that their existence makes no difference to anyone, they cannot feel a sense of joy, therefore, we need to feel that our relationships have permanence, and that our knowledge and good deeds have lasting value.

Finally, many people feel--and I am one of them -- that belief in God and in an afterlife are a helpful part of this feeling of optimism and joy.

Have a great day! Just John

FROM THE PRESIDENT Our Mid Year Conference ended very successfully. The reports were informative and our Official Visitors, Supreme Councilman Joe Coons and WOTM Grand Chancellor Barbara McPherson, topped off the conference with the information they brought with them to Tampa. It is always an honor and privilege to have our International Officers visit. Fun Night was a success and the new Farkel Tournament added a new twist. The breakout sessions drew much interest and we hope to continue with this format in the future. Congratulations to our Moose of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coworker of the Year, Novice Coworker, and Moose Legionnaire of the Year. It was great to see a good turnout by the Ritual Teams that participated in the final Lodge Ritual Competition. We wish all the finalists the best at the International competition. We would also like to congratulate all the new recipients of the Academy of Friendship Degree. The International Convention in Chicago is rapidly approaching and we hope that many of our members will be able to attend and participate in the activities that are being offered. Be sure to visit Mooseheart while you are there. Camp Ross is also a great day trip if you have the time. Believe me, you will come back to your Lodges and Chapters with renewed enthusiasm toward the goals of this fraternity. This is a very special year for Florida as our own Ligouri Saladin will be installed as the Supreme Governor, the highest elected office of the Moose Fraternity. In October, we will hold a special celebration in his honor at our Annual Convention in Tampa. More information will be sent to the Lodges concerning this affair. Please keep in mind our present and ongoing projects: The Roof Project at Mooseheart, Moosehaven Phone System, Gimme 5, Membership and Moose Charities. As always, remember what we are here for our children at Mooseheart and our seniors at Moosehaven. Fraternally, Tom Saunders, F.B.M.A. President

Hello Co Workers: Well, we made it through the election and installation of officers. How did you do? If you have all your officers and chairman installed, great job! If you haven’t gotten all of your officers and chairman yet, keep looking, they are out there. Congratulations to all of our “New Friends”. What a joy it was for me to stand there in front of all 286 of you while you took your oath and became Academy of Friendship Degree holders. Don’t stop now. Your task is just beginning. Find a friend to share this with. Keep your hearts open to new ideas and new friends. Congratulations also to all of our new College of Regent members and new Star Recorders Matriculants. How hard you worked to earn these degrees. The Florida co workers truly do amaze not just me, but Mooseheart too. Did you know that “we” topped the 10,000 mark this past month to finish the chapter year with that many new members? In one year, you went out and sponsored and enrolled over 10,000 new members. Way to go Florida!!!! Congrats to our great Membership Chairman Madeline Skiba and her team leaders. Now, it’s a New Year and time to start fresh. Can you do it? I think you can. Any co worker can attend the Women of the Moose Training Session that is coming up and Recorders don’t forget, you need to attend a 2 HOTT class to earn your personal Degree of Star Recorder, along with all the other requirements that must be met. Keep checking the calendar on the F.B.M.A. website to find the dates and times. Let’s go out and make this year one of faith, hope and love and charity. Isn’t that what we are all about? Come on co workers let’s go out there and have some FUN!!!! Fraternally, Maxine Nebinger Deputy Grand Regent P.S. If your chapter is having something that you would like announced on the F.B.M.A. website, please email me at [email protected] and I will pass the date and times on to the webmaster. It would be wonderful to see all the College of Regents and Star Recorder nights published so other co workers can come and congratulate your new degree holder on her special night.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY GRAND REGENT

FROM THE DESK OF THE ASSOCIATION SECRETARY

FRATERNAL EDUCATION CORNER

We just completed the 49th Mid-Year Conference in Tampa and the hotels went out of their way to accommodate us and make us feel really special. We have completed our pledge to the Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranch and I want to thank all the units for their donations. Districts 27 and 14 made special contributions every month toward this project. Thanks Brothers. Fund raising for the Mooseheart Roof Repairs and the Updated Phone System are doing well and very possible could be completed by the State Convention. I would thank the Women of the Moose for their march of checks for the Mooseheart roof repairs that amounted to over $3000.00. Beat the heck out of the Lodge donations to this project. Keep us in mind for October and bring some checks for this very special project. The Moose of the Year applications are different this year instead of mailing part of it to Moose International and the resume to the FBMA Secretary, this year the entire form is to be sent to Moose International. Every lodge has some member that can be recognized for this honor let’s try to have every

lodge fill out this form. While you are filling it out make sure you put a lot of information about your nominee and not just that he is a loyal member. Yes we have had some forms submitted with not much more than that for a resume. Get the Moose Legionnaire of the Year and Rookie of the Year forms submitted. Make Rodney and the FBMA look good! We started our new year as of May 1st and remember to set goals for your lodge in both increasing membership and assets. On a sad note Brother Chuck Myers, F.B.M.A. Treasurer, will be having open heart surgery in the near future, please keep him in your prayers for a speedy and safe recovery. This is the big year, our own Liguori Saladin will be elevated to the office of SUPREME GOVERNOR at the International convention being held from May 22 to May 27, 2009. HOORAY FOR LIGUORI, OUR PAL SAL Scott Cushing, F.B.M.A. Secretary

Once again, we are about to be challenged with a new fiscal year. Are we up to it? Will we set the example for others to follow? Are we doing our part? If you answered “yes” to all of those questions, we will certainly achieve all of our goals and continue to make the Moose Fraternity and the FBMA the best there is. For those who weren’t at the Mid-year Conference in Tampa, there have been some changes within the Fraternal Education Committee. I share with you that four of our Leadership Trainers have stepped down. They are Russell Key, Bob Ostertag, Liguori Saladin, and myself. We have new trainers who will shortly travel to Moose International for a session of Train the Trainer (AKA T3) specifically for the Leadership program. Moose International Education and Training has been working on a new and revised Leadership Orientation Program incorporating the recent changes to the General Laws. It will be a completely revamped session and the hopes are that every Lodge officer and interested member will take advantage of the new material and presentation. The new trainers coming on board are, Lynn Lease of Tallahassee, Larry Cundiff of Palatka, Joe Marshall of Leigh Acres, Doug Garcia of Ocala Forest, Tom Taylor of Stuart, Harry Gautsch of

Indian River, and Keith Headley of Port St Lucie. David Smith will remain as the senior member of the team also taking on the responsibility of the Coordinator of the Leadership Trainers and Sessions. We have completed the Leadership Orientation classes and it looks like another year of record numbers of attendance. Thanks to those who took advantage of the classes. We understand the difficulty in knowing of the upcoming changes to the General Laws, however, we also know that over 90% of the presented material is not going to change. Therefore, the time spent at the session was not in vain. Everyone in attendance went away with some additional knowledge along with sharing personal experiences with the other attendees. Keep watch for additional training sessions. They are posted on the www.floridamoose.org website. The FBMA calendar also has the scheduled events listed and is updated when necessary to assure it remains current. There is a standing challenge for everyone to attend at least one training session each year and learn or share with others. Have you met that challenge? “Knowledge is Power” and any good engine needs power to pull the others along. Please help to keep the Fraternity strong. Many hands make the burden light. Till next time “Happy Training” Dave Flood, FEC Chairman

COMMUNITY SERVICE and FUNDRAISING DUNNELLON, Florida - On Tuesday, March 3, 2009, West Marion Moose Family Center #2356 Governor, Jerry Thompson presented a check for $1500.00 to Brothers Keeper Executive Director Steve Hoestery in front of the Moose Lodge. Also, the Lodge donated a girl’s bicycle that was in need. Pictured at left (left to right) is Moose Lodge Governor Jerry Thompson, Executive Director Steve Hoestery and Lodge Community Service Chairman, Fred Pulis. In the background is the “Standing Moose” statue that welcomes everybody to the Lodge. This effort by the Moose Family Center is part of an overall attempt to help and assist in the solving of some of the

major problems affecting the West Marion County residents. The financial donations were made possible by individual contributions of members.

During these difficult times, Brothers Keeper is one of the major sources of assistance to needy families in Marion County regardless of race, creed, color, or sex. Brothers Keeper is an affiliate of the Ministry of Blessed Trinity Church.

In an average month, Brothers Keeper helps over 500 families providing a variety of assistance. They serve over 6,000 meals at their Soup Kitchen. They provide emergency clothing to 125 families or individuals. In addition, they fill 25 emergency medical prescriptions. Specifically, the $1500 donation will be used to keep the lights on for a month in the homes of 115 families. This is extremely important to many needy Marion County residents during these difficult economic times. Brothers Keeper has begun to expand its services from emergency help to finding ways to help the poor and the homeless help themselves.

Because of similar community activities and donations, the West Marion Moose Family Center was awarded the (Platinum) “Premier Lodge Award” at the recently held National Convention. The local Lodge located at 10411 SW 110th Street was one of only three Lodges to earn the Platinum Premier Lodge Award in the State of Florida

COMMUNITY SERVICE and FUNDRAISING

HOMESTEAD, Florida - West Dade

Lodge 1825, as part of its ongoing community service campaign, participated with the American Cancer Society in the Relay For Life held on the Baptist Hospital property this May.

As a result of their efforts in requesting sponsorships and fundraisers held prior to and during the event the Lodge was able to raise over $300.00. The combined efforts of both the LOOM and WOTM of West Dade Lodge made participation in this worthwhile event a success and continues to show what the Moose is capable of within the local community. RUSKIN MOOSE LODGE DONATES TO HOSPICE

RUSKIN, Florida - LifePath Hospice was the recipient of a $3,500 donation from Moose Lodge 813 in Ruskin. The donation was made in early March at a check presentation ceremony at the Moose Lodge, located at 1212 Shell Point Rd. in Ruskin. Pictured at left is Marlene Sword presenting the $3,500 check to LifePath Hospice Director of Annual Giving Liz Anderson (second from let). Local Moose Lodge 813 member Marlene Sword said it decided to donate the money to LifePath Hospice because "we have

a lot of friends and family in Hospice, including my husband before he passed’. The donation is the proceeds from an event held in January at the Lodge, where more than 200 people paid $6.50 for a beef tips dinner. In addition, event organizers generated more funds from a raffle and a "pass-the-hat" collection. "LifePath Hospice is appreciative of the support we've received from the Ruskin Moose Lodge," said Liz Anderson, LifePath Hospice director. 'This gift will help LifePath Hospice deliver compassionate end-of-life care throughout Hillsborough County." As a not-far-profit agency, LifePath Hospice depends on the generosity of organizations, like the Ruskin Moose Lodge, to be able to provide ongoing community programs, such as children's grief support services, caregiver services and hospice care for the uninsured. According to Public Relations Specialist for LifePath Hospice, Patty Klein, "Donations, like the one from the Moose Lodge, go to fund programs and services that Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance doesn't cover." PALMETTO CHAPTER 1225 CO-WORKERS IMPRESS VISITOR PALMETTO, Florida - Palmetto Lodge 2117 and Chapter 1225 held a dinner March 21, 2009 to raise money for Southeastern Guide Dogs. Following is an article written by Shirley Gustin of Exeter, New Hampshire. “I had the pleasure of being at the Palmetto Moose Lodge #2117 on March 21 for a fundraiser dinner for the Southeast Guide Dogs. This dinner was for 300 people and I, as an outsider looking in, was totally blown away by the efficiency of these women and how hard they work while having a great big smile on their faces. It did a lot of good for us who worry about all our own problems. This unselfish act of all these ladies was just wonderful. I also had the pleasure of meeting a lady named Maria , and as I understand she is the lady who runs the show. And I, for one, would only hope I'd have the energy of this lady. From What I understand, they raised a lot of money at this great fundraiser for helping our blind neighbors and friends by getting them a dog. If you get a chance to join in this fundraiser next year, try not to miss it. You will not regret going. I am sure I will be there also and maybe they will even let me join their team ... and what a wonderful team they are. Again, thank you, to the women of the Moose.” Article and photographs submitted by Maria Garrett and Sam Boyce

FOOD FROM THE HEART ENGLEWOOD, Florida - Manatee Moose Legion 58 President Charlie Parker spent a weekend driving to and from Moosehaven, Florida's home for older members of the Loyal Order of the Moose who can no longer live on their own. He went there to deliver nearly 500 pounds of fruits and vegetables that he’d collected in donations from Sheckler Produce and Troyer Farms. He spent a couple of weeks arranging for the donations and then Dan Spisak, George Bergau and Charlie (pictured at right - left to right) went to Sheckler Produce on Saturday morning to load them into his SUV. Once that was done, Charlie took off for Moosehaven, just-outside Jacksonville, Florida. He delivered the goods, spent the night and then drove home. So here's a tip of the hat to Charlie and his mates and another one to Sheckler's and Troyer Farms. You folks are what make our little part of Florida a great place to live and work. WOMEN OF THE MOOSE

We would like a few minutes of your time to tell you about our nominee for International Co-Worker of the Year. Our dynamic lady moved to Florida in 1995 from the state of Pennsylvania. She is a mother of 5 children, including one set of twins, and has 19 grandchildren. When she got here she found it difficult to find a job that paid enough to manage a house and all the monthly bills so she learned to drive a big rig and drove the cross country route to California and Mexico. Her mother was a long time active member of our Chapter and sponsored her daughter into our Chapter on March 11, 2000. Because she was on the road most of the time, she got off to a slow start and was mainly a social member when she had some time at home. She was involved in an accident somewhere on the road and suffered severe neck injuries. She was no longer able to drive and had to retire from her job. Fortunately for us, she now had the time to become active in WOTM. Once this gal got started there was no stopping. In 2003 we talked her into the position of Sentinel. It was in this position that she earned the Academy of Friendship Degree. In 2004 she was elected Jr. Regent for the 2004-2005 Chapter year and received her Academy of Friendship Degree at the Mid-Year Conference in April of 2005. During these two years she became very active with hosting fund raising projects and working on just about every committee we had including the Craft Committee. She told us she wasn't very craftsie and we found that to be true. We made sure she only had easy jobs to do and definitely nothing that required a needle and thread. She did however persevere and helped finish many of our projects. She not only worked on these committees but probably donated half the food, half the decorations and most of the raffle items. She also worked on the Newsletter Staff for 3 years. Well she found her niche and in 2005 she was elected Senior Regent. She immediately formed a bond with her officers and chairmen and took us through a very successful year. It was probably one of the best financial years this Chapter has had. The Chapter earned the Award of Achievement and she received her Green Cap in October 2006 at the Annual Convention. She served as Jr. Graduate Regent 2006-2001 and has sponsored 10 members to date. Community Service is a large part of the Moose Fraternity and this is something our Co- worker excels at. She drives 100 miles several times during the year to donate clothing to a homeless shelter north of her home. She also donates much of her beautiful wardrobe to Moosehaven. She works each year putting shoeboxes together for our Chapter's Christmas Shoebox Project. This project involves filling shoeboxes with personal items for the residents of a local Assisted Living Facility. For many who reside there, this will be the only gift they receive. She donates food for the holiday baskets for those less fortunate and new toys for a local All Children's hospital. She collects aluminum can pop tops for Ronald McDonald House and labels for education for Mooseheart Schools. She is a dedicated recycler and helps to keep our planet clean and green. She is constantly giving of herself helping family members, neighbors and co-workers when they are ill or injured and when they are recuperating from illness or injury. She cooks full meals and delivers them to their homes. She runs errands for them, cleans their homes and even does their laundry. Of course you don't have to be sick or injured; she will help anyone who needs her assistance. Her kindness and compassion have been a steady force for many. Two years ago, one of our young co-workers passed away very unexpectedly. She was only 30 years old and a mother of 3 young children. This co-worker helped get this family through a very bad time. Because there was no insurance, the family realized a huge financial burden. Soon the money ran out and there was nothing left for a headstone. When she heard this she immediately set out to raise the money needed. She got the Chapter together to hold a rummage sale which raised about half the cost of the perpetual stone. With much more needed, she got together with a LOOM member with a local business and held a benefit auction to raise the other half. All the items sold that day were purchased and donated by this giving co-worker. She came to bat again and helped with another auction when a local boy stepped into a nest of rattlesnakes and was bitten several times and required 74 vials of anti-venom at the cost of $1,000.00 each. She did all this while taking care of her mother who was now blind and suffered with severe diabetes. She continues in service to the Chapter and was a member of the Audit Committee 2007-2008 and presently serves as the Meeting Coordinator. She was asked to participate and she did. She was asked to help and she did. She was asked to serve and she has. I hope you can see why we have chosen her for International Co-Worker of the Year.

DISTRICT NEWS

DISTRICT 20 FUNDRAISER A HUGH SUCCESS! LAKE WALES, Florida - The spirit of the Fraternity was certainly shining down on Lake Wales on Saturday March 14th during the District 20 Fund Raiser for our own Brother in Need, Jim Parrett. The Lake Wales Lodge graciously hosted this event that turned out better than anyone could have imagined! The festivities started around 3pm and the party was still in full swing when this reporter left at 6pm. Five Lodges were represented at the festivities; North Lakeland, South Lakeland, Haines City, Winter Haven, Lake Wales and Kissimmee , as well as the District 20 Moose on Bikes. Our Regional Manager from Moose International, Rodney Hammond, was also in attendance, and spent a little time in “jail”. There was a cash drawing, a raffle of a beautiful Diamond ring donated by a local jeweler, a drawing for several gift certificates from businesses around the county and at least thirty “bottles” were bid on at the auction, including some Polk County “lightning”! The Flea Market where Jim worked donated several very nice items to the auction. Several other folks found themselves going to “jail” too, having to dance for bail money. The plate of food was overwhelming, with chicken and ribs, baked beans and home made coleslaw, and the desserts that were auctioned off were truly amazing. The general mood of the day was “Lets party, and have Fun!” and fun we had, showing the true spirit of what we are about ….Family, Fraternity and Community. When the smoke cleared, and all was said and done, over $11,000.00 was raised for Jim and Debbie’s fight against cancer. What a beautiful showing of fellowship and love by not only the District 20 members, but also the Fraternity and the community as well. Regretfully Jim lost his battle with cancer on March 28th, 2009. Article and photograph submitted by Annie Chisenall

MOOSE LEGION CYPRESS MOOSE LEGION 202 MEMBERS SPONSOR UNPRECEDENTED

MOOSE FISHING PROJECT FOR INVERNESS MOOSE LODGE 2112 HERNANDO,Florida - March 27 and April 2 of 2009, the Moose Legion members of Inverness Lodge 2112 sponsored and participated in an unprecedented community action project. The Moose Legion members taught and supervised a "fishing class" for the fifth grade students from the Hernando Elementary School. The concept was to go to the school, educate the students on their environment with emphasis on aquatic education. The students were given a hands on experience on the Aquatic Environment, the Food Chain, Enhancing and Protecting the Fresh Waters of their

State, plus Fish Identification, Fish Anatomy, The Sport of Fishing and its Ethics, Rules and Regulations of Florida, Safe Handling of a Rod and Reel, and "How to Catch a Fish." The classroom session was followed six days later by a field trip to a local stocked fish pond where the students had a chance to practice what the had learned. Success?? Just ask Moose Legion members such as Mike Albert, Past Governor Charlie Boyd, Trustee Jerry Chalkier, Glenn Lesser and Annette Mahoney, Dennis Farrell, Governor Harold Hardy, Willie Jacobs, Gary Lee, Treasurer Rol Steinhauser, Trustee Skeet Shiner, Mike Walters, and Mike Wadsworth. This event took a lot of planning

and cooperation. Special thanks go to Vickie Paulsen for the graphics used and Dan Hardy (Marine Tech) who provided the bait and hosts Randy Barnes for the use of his pond and fish, and Rich Barnes who pointed us in right direction. Yes, the kids caught fish - a bunch of them and released them back into their environment, practicing the concept of Capture and Release. Almost every one caught one or more fish (some as many as ten bluegill), the largest being a five plus pound catfish. Afterwards, the students were treated to a hot dog and burger lunch with chips, sodas and cookies at the pavilion at Inverness Lodge 2112 and given a packet of educational fish related literature that reinforced their experience. How's that for Moose Legion Activities? You can become a part of this - just participate!! Article and photographs submitted by Vickie Poulsen

Moose Legion News From Dave Flood

International Moose Legion Ambassador Congratulations are in order for Tom Morgan. International Moose Legionnaire of the year for Cypress 202. He can be proud of the recognition and all of many recognized Moose Legionnaires within their jurisdiction. We are striving for 100% of participation of all the Moose Legion jurisdictions to submit a name for the next year’s Moose Legionnaire of the year. It is guaranteed that some one will be selected but only if their name has been submitted. Some stats on what have we accomplished this past year. Our association was #1 in applications submitted, we had 3 jurisdiction in the nations top ten. We had the top endorser within the fraternity (B Scott Farrar of Cypress 202), Cypress 202 was the first jurisdiction to receive the Directors Key Club Award. As you can see, those who shine are the light for others. The Stimulus program is long gone and it did help in improving our numbers. Now is where we as Moose Legionnaires can really show our true colors. We need to reach down and show that we believe in the Moose Legion, put our teamwork in play, work the mentoring program and bring back the fun and attitude from the past. We are Moose Legionnaires and “Proud” ones at that. Set the example, attend the Lodge Moose Legion Committee meetings, attend the celebrations, ask someone to ride along. Make the Moose Legion a degree that others will want to become a part of. If you are proud to be a Moose Legionnaire, wear the Regalia to show it. It never hurts to have someone ask, “What is that vest for and how do I get one”? Attitude does work especially in both directions. One gets ahead by being positive. Negativity seems to grow faster. We need to stop that direction of growth. Congratulations to all the winners of the last quarter campaign for the Moose Legion. As of this writing, I do not know who won the Moose Legion Blazer, shirt and tie but who ever it is, he will remember it forever. Thanks for all who participated, the result was a strengthening of our numbers. That was the goal and the program did work.

STATE RITUAL RESULTS AND PHOTOGRAPHS

Summer has arrived and the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches has been preparing for another season of Summer Camp. For many children, this is the highlight of their year - being able to get away from the pressures of home or school. They can just have some fun and be a kid! Over the years, we have heard some of the heart-felt stories from our campers. One boy thought he couldn’t come to camp because he did not have the items listed that are needed to attend camp. Another boy did not have shoes to wear for camp. Yet another girl and her sister found a brother at camp they had not seen in years. We met all of these challenges and more. None of these children were turned away from our Summer Camp. There are countless other stories just like these. Each of these children received extra special care. But with the help of our generous donors, these stories had a happy ending. People like you made this happen. The Youth Ranches is able to reach out to these and so many other children. With your help we can meet their needs and provide them with hope for a better tomorrow. Will you make a gift to

provide a camp sponsorship for needy and deserving children? Please consider making a full camp sponsorship today. For more information, please contact Frank Kenny, Donor Relations Officer at 1-800-765-3797 or visit us at www.youthranches.org

F.B.M.A. SPORTS I am going to start by asking the Lodges that are thinking of bidding a tournament for 2010 to do so as soon as possible. As you know one of the easiest ways for your Lodge to make extra money is to host a tournament. Applications can be found on the F.B.M.A. web site floridamoose.org. By the time you read this all of the regional pool tournaments will have been played. Lodges that were involved will receive their applications to play in the State Tournament at their Lodge. The winners I have at this time are listed below. The next State Tournament will be golf, which will be held June 5th through 7th at Eagle Ridge Golf course in Ocala. All information and applications can be found on the web site. After our golf tournament the committee will be heading to Merritt Island to welcome the Women of the Moose to their pool tournament. This will be held on July 10th through 12th. Phyllis and Fred Jewett told me they have a fun weekend planned. Then as the summer moves on, so will the committee. Next we will be at Sebastian River Lodge #l767, to enjoy a weekend of darts. This will take place Aug. 7th through 9th. I have had to make some changes in the Regions. Starting in 2010, Region #4 will be moved to Region #2. This had to be done due to the lack of interest in pool in the region. I want to thank Larry and Carla Tinsley for all their work trying to get Lodges in that area to participate in Region #4. Should the time come, I will be glad to put it back into the program. I want to thank everyone that has helped me make our sports program so successful. That’s all for now. BUT REMEMBER------ THINK FUN! ED LAYTON, F.B.M.A. SPORTS CHAIRMAN
