Challenges of Sorghum

• Nutritional values assigned to the nutrients from sorghum in feed formulation software are outdated.

• Feed manufacturers will agree that feeds with added sorghum are more difficult to pellet.

• Access and supply of sorghum.

Feeding Sorghum

• Sorghum varieties grown in the U.S. are low tannin or 99% free of tannin.

• New varieties of grain sorghum are an excellent source of protein and energy for broilers, egg layers, turkeys and waterfowl.

• When competitively priced, sorghum can be used up to 70% in a broiler and layer rations and 55% in turkey rations replacing corn.

Let’s Compare

• Nutrient profile of sorghum is complementary to typical protein sources.

• Amino acid digestibility compares favorably with corn.

• Fat content (energy value) is slightly lower when compared to corn.

• Sorghum contains reduced quantities of yellow xanthophylls-possible market advantage for some.

• Similar processing requirements when compared to corn.

• Contains more protein than corn.

• Most recent studies show little to no significant change in nursery diets feeding sorghum. Tokach, Goodband; Sorghum Swine Feeding Guide

• Optimum particle size milling of sorghum enhances nutrient values in broiler chicks. Beyer; Sorghum Poultry Feeding Guide

Because sorghum is often grown where water resources are limited, sorghum production often requires fewer environmental resources. Excellent rotational crop for many parts of the country. Potential to source directly from farmers.Sorghum typically has lower input prices.
