CAROL’S COMMENTS
I’ve been thinking… about
the calendar. (Several years ago when I was
serving a church, folds in the congregation be-
gan to recognized that when I began a sentence
with “I’ve been thinking…”, it usually meant I
was about to suggest that we do something new,
or do something we were already doing, differ-
ently. I’ve shifted a bit away from that through
the years, for me it now means I’ve been pon-
dering an idea and now it seems to be a good
time to share.) so let me share what I’ve been
thinking about:
We are in the season of the church year after
Pentecost called Ordinary Time. In this case
“Ordinary” doesn’t mean “normal or usual; not
unusual, different or special”* but numbers,
“ordinals”, the Sundays after Pentecost are
numbered; there are no special days in this sea-
son. It begins the day after Pentecost and ends
the day before the First Sunday of Advent. De-
pending on the date of Easter, there can be as
many as 28 Sundays in Ordinary Time, this year
there are 26. It always begins with Trinity Sun-
day and ends with the Reign of Christ or Christ
the King. The season also includes All Saints and
Thanksgiving. The liturgical color is green, sym-
bolizing growth in Christ.
In this season of Ordinary Time many extra-
ordinary events often occur in communities and
families - graduations, weddings, anniversaries,
reunions, festivals, community days - which of-
fer unique opportunities for personal and congre-
gational growth in Christ.
The opportunities that I have experienced in your
midst have centered around food.
The Bar-Be-Que and Ice Cream Social wel-
comed me and allowed me, and many others,
to experience the gift of sharing in the abun-
dance of food and hospitality offered by this
congregation.
The Power of Florence Pancake Breakfast
was the experience of God’s grace in action a
s we fed whoever came through the door, as
much as they wanted to eat. We didn’t have
12 baskets of left-overs, but we certainly had
enough to feed everyone who came.
Every Sunday morning following worship,
there is food and an opportunity to visit in
the fellowship hall, allowing people to hear
more deeply about the concerns of others.

Each of these was an act of feeding, eating,
and hospitality; each are also acts of bring-
ing the kingdom (or reign) or God on earth.
When we remember the source of our bless-
ings, when we give and receive a meal, we
celebrate Christ in our midst We can experi-
ence offering hamburgers, ice cream, pan-
cakes, and soup as an act of nourishing peo-
ple’s bodies or we can see it as a possibility
of being drawn closer to the Source of Life.
The Liturgical Calendar says we are in Ordi-
nary Time; may our growth in Christ contin-
ue! May you experience continued blessings
in your journey of faith.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY NEWS
Florence Habitat for Humanity has set their annual Beach Walk for September 12. The idea is for walkers to make a monetary contribution, and seek sponsors who will also donate money, for local building pro-jects. You are invited to join the camaraderie of walkers (and a few dogs), starting at the North Jetty and proceeding to Driftwood Shores where music and food is provided. Donation envelopes will be available soon. Groundbreaking took place on July 19 for the 27th house built in our community.
A delightful volunteer opportunity for you! Florence Habitat for Humanity (FHFH) has just selected five new families to build homes with. The opportunity available to you is to share in this grand ad-venture with one of these fine families. As a Family Partner you will provide guidance to the new homeowner during the building pro-cess. You become the connection between FHFH and the Building Committee from ground breaking to the thrill of delivering the keys at the dedication of their completed home. You become a member of the Family Part-ner Committee and we are by your side every step of the way. Read about our Flor-ence FHFH affiliate at this web site http://www.florencehabitat.org/content/introduction or call Ginny Kelly at 541-902-7639 or Diane Bailiff at 541-902-7775 for more infor-mation. -Jean Hefty

FREE LUNCH NEWS
As you know, the Free Lunch Program started over 20 years ago.
I was the
Chairperson for most of these years, with other duties which included the following:
co-purchaser, head of sing-along potato supper fundraiser, head of Community
Thanksgiving dinner, recruiting Methodist representatives, and being on call to find
substitutes when a group could not find enough volunteers.
Am I complaining? NO! The program is something I care about and have found great
joy and satisfaction in the work that I have done. I was never pressured to do any of
it. I also do not want to make light of the importance of the many wonderful and faith-
ful volunteers, who did step up to help. There just were never enough of you. Without
the many others who cared and gave of their time, the program would never have
gotten off the ground.
When the Free Lunch started, I was relatively young at 63 and in good health. As I
have gotten older, my energy level has diminished. As a result, I have neglected my
house, garden and husband. I have virtually given up any entertainment and have not
always done all that I should to help those friends and family who are near and dear
to me.
After all this time, I have made the decision to give up most of the work I do for Free
Lunch as of January 1, 2016. I will continue to be part of the Methodist third Thurs-
day, cooking and helping. I will also represent the Methodist Church on the first
Thursday.
There is the need for someone to recruit representatives as needed. The second
Thursday needs filling. I trust someone will volunteer so that the Free Lunch Program
can continue.
