October Newsletter
CAROL’S COMMENTS
I’ve been thinking…about
October. We continue our Sundays in “weeks
after Pentecost in Ordinary Time”, Sundays
being marked by numbers, “ordinals”. Alt-
hough all around us the leaves are changing,
the Liturgical color remains green, symboliz-
ing growth. When the month ends, only 4
Sundays will remain in Ordinary Time and
Advent will begin!
The first Sunday of October, the 4th, is
World Communion Sunday. We share this
meal with millions of brothers and sisters in
Christ around the world. I invite you to wear
something from your ethnic heritage (or
something from someone else’s!) to worship
that day to help us all remember the breadth
of the Good News of God’s love heard in
many languages in many places. Worship
will be at 10:30, followed by a potluck in the
Fellowship Hall.
October 18 is Laity Sunday. Both the 9:00
and 10:30 services will be led by the laity.
We will celebrate the witness of the laity in
the Florence community and beyond.
Plans are underway for Abuse Prevention
Awareness Sunday, October 25. Several
years ago the Laity and Clergy at Annual
Conference added this observance to the
calendar in support of the Safe Sanctuary
Policy for Children, Youth and Vulnerable
Adults. Although it is a topic that makes
many people uncomfortable, it should, how-
ever, remain a topic of concern and discus-
sion for people of faith.
Also in October, the Nominations and Lead-
ership Development Committee will be at
work in preparation for our All-Church
Conference November 22 following the
10:30 service and each Committee or Work
Area will be asked to submit their budget
requests to the Finance Committee for the
preparation of the 2016 budget.
I’ve also been reflecting on our ministry in
September. We began the month with the
return of Laura and the choir in a combined
service followed by a potluck. The follow-
ing Sunday we moved to two services and
the Blessing of Students, Teachers, and

September 20, we presented Bibles to sev-
en children and youth and installed seven
teachers and substitute teachers for the
Children and Youth Sunday School and a
teacher and a substitute for the Adult Sun-
day School Class. On September 27, we
recognized the Shawl Ministry and those
who make the beautiful shawls that are,
like God’s grace, so freely given away.
A brief overview of November reveals All-
Saints Sunday on the first Sunday; an ob-
servance for Veteran’s in worship Novem-
ber 8; November 15 will be Commitment
Sunday with our Estimate of Giving in
preparation for funding the church budget
for 2016; Christ the King/Thanksgiving
Sunday, November 22; and the First Sun-
day of Advent with the Hanging of the
Greens, November 29.
As the Light of Christ goes into the world
at the closing of worship, we have been
singing,
“As we go, may your Spirit go before us.
As we go, may we follow where you lead.
May we live what we have learned, share
the message we have heard,
and be a light unto the world as we go.”
May it be so with each of us in the days of
the month of October, and beyond.
Grace and Peace,
Rev Carol

Roving Reporters from Kodiak, Alaska
We had the opportunity to visit this historic small community in the Aleutian Is-land chain, and to take in the interesting history of this isolated port known mostly for its prolific commercial fishing and dense population Kodiak (aka “Brown” or “Grizzly” bears. The most visible church here is the architecturally intriguing Holy Resurrection Russian Orthodox Church, that dates from 1794, and survived multiple reconstructions. It is a continuing reminder of the early Russian settlement throughout the Aleutian Islands and the entire west coast of Alaska.

RECIPE CORNER
Halloween Garlic Cheeseball Ingredients: 10 oz. sharp yellow cheese
8 oz. pkg. cream cheese, at room temp 4 cloves fresh garlic 1/4 tsp. Tabasco sauce 1 small celery stalk, and leaves 10 whole, pitted black olives Directions: In a large bowl, combine most of the cheddar, softened cream cheese, and Tabasco. Crush the garlic and mix in with the cheese mixture. Mix with your hands until well blended. Shape into a ball with the bottom being slightly flattened. Roll the ball in the remaining cheddar to give it a yellow-orange look. Press grooves around the ball to resemble a pumpkin. Slice ol-ives to make eyes, nose, and mouth. Use a 2 inch piece of celery for the stem, and celery leaves for decoration. Serves 10-12. I double the recipe for a larger pumpkin to serve at a larger party. Submitted by Diane McCalmont
