WILLOW NUTRIA
NUTRIA
A colony of NUTRIAS lives in the area in the stream Strona where the creek crosses Cossato. The habitat is ideal, with the banks rich of vegetation.
Nutrias, originating in South America, certainly have fled from a breeder, or deliberately abandoned.
The nutria is a large aquatic rodent similar to Beaver, and is able to breed year-round.
It is strictly vegetarian, and its diet is based mainly on aquatic plants such as water lilies, buds of straw and other plants commonly found along watercourses.
In case of shortage of food it can feed any vegetable, and reach even cultivated fields, which, unfortunately, often considerable damage to crops, preferring maize.
WILLOW
The willow is a plant that lives in the sun, but tolerates partial shade. It grows mainly in wet soils, water and surviving so poorly ventilated. Propagation is from cuttings.
Willow purple is present throughout Italy, along waterways and rivers bank, on gravelly or sandy soils.
The young branches are used to make baskets, mats and baskets or to produce useful ties in agriculture.
The gem is the end not yet fully developed of the spear
