TRAINING CAMP

This month I wanted to take a look at something I have never addressed before, vision fitness. I cannot think of too many things more important than your vision and how it can affect your performance on the track. Let’s take a look at some of the key points on vision fitness.

Dynamic Visual AcuityIf you use sports like racquetball, tennis, soccer or hockey to train, it

is important that you be able to clearly see objects while you and/or the objects are moving fast. No doubt that this same principle will apply to track conditions as they change throughout the day. Without good dynamic visual acu-ity, you are going to have a difficult time in any sport and rest assured that the top riders in the world have the ability to visually assess track conditions in fractions of a second and adjust accord-ingly.

Visual ConcentrationWhen you commit an error

in a turn or on a jump, it may be that you are distracted by things that are happening around you. Our eyes normally react to anything that happens in our field of vision... spectators, other riders or even the wind blowing leaves or grass on the track. Visual Concentra-tion is the ability to screen out these distractions and stay focused on the task at hand. This is an area I like to teach my riders and with a little psychology included will disrupt the other rider’s concen-tration.

Eye TrackingWhen you are playing any stick and ball sport or riding motocross

will fast moving objects and competitors, it is important that you be able to follow objects without much head motion. Eye tracking helps you maintain better balance and react to the situation more quickly. Focus on what you are doing, hold your line and do not worry about what they other guy is doing.

Eye-Hand-Body Coordination is how your hands, feet and body and other muscles respond to the information gathered through your eyes. It is an important part of most sports because it affects both timing and body control. Anything you can include in your training such as stick and ball sports or even video games can help to improve hand eye body coordina-tion.

Visual MemoryNo matter if you are pushing a fast break up the basketball court, lead-

ing a rush up the ice in hockey, or catching the big wave amid a crowd of surfers, or pounding out laps on the motocross track you need to process and remember a fast moving, complex picture of people and things. This is called visual memory. The athlete with good visual memory always seems to be in the right place at the right time. This can be a key factor when it comes to changing track conditions, watch other races and espe-cially the fast guys to see what they are doing.

VisualizationPicture yourself nailing the holeshot, putting in 5 perfect laps and win-

ning the race. Believe it or not, picturing yourself doing it can actually help you do it. Visualization is the skill that enables you to see yourself performing well in your “mind’s eye” while your eyes are seeing and con-centrating on something else, usually the ball. Using scanning techniques, researchers have found that the same areas of the brain that light up during performance also do so when you visualize the performance. If you see yourself in 5th place chances are that’s where you will end up.

Peripheral VisionWhen a rider sees another rider out

of the corner of his or her eye, the rider is using his peripheral vision. Because much of what happens in sports does not happen directly in front of you, it’s impor-tant to increase your ability to see action to the side without having to turn your head. In most cases as soon as a rider turns his head to see what is going on beside him is has lost a position and men-tally fighting and up hill battle to regain confidence.

Visual Reaction TimeThe most important part of the race I

think we can all agree is the start. Improv-ing your reaction time can be as simple as practicing at traffic signals by mentally taking a start as the light changes. In addition, things like batting cages or other stick and ball sports can help improve reaction time. You need to improve your visual reaction time, or the speed with

which your brain interprets and reacts to your opponent’s action.

Depth PerceptionIn racket sports, depth perception enables you to quickly and ac-

curately judge the distance between yourself, the ball, your opponents, teammates, boundary lines and other objects. When you are shooting or hunting, if you consistently over or underestimate the distance to your target, poor depth perception may be at fault. The same can be said for motocross if your are not visually connected to the starting gate, boundar-ies of the track, deep ruts in turns, face of jumps etc… depth perception will allow you to make better line selection, get better starts and see your-self winning the race.

FLMX: Timmy, how’s life?TF: Life is good. I have been busy, but it’s really good.

FLMX: You have officially made the transforma-tion from a Pro Racer to a Mini Dad! How has racing changed?TF: I think racing is what it is with racing and competition. Competition is always good but it is a lot different from what I remember growing up rac-ing. It’s a lot more competitive now, but I am very happy to be doing it with my son.

FLMX: Evan has really stepped it up this year. What class and bike is he on and how has this year been going?TF: He is starting to ride really well. He started doing some Winter Ams outside of Dade City. He did OK at the Regionals, didn’t make it but has re-ally come along way this year. He is on KTM 50’s and 65’s.

FLMX: He is out with a broken foot, he did it at Okeechobee, but not racing! What happened?TF: Haha, he had his first broke bone at the track but it was racing! He was playing with some kids and jumped off a berm and broke his lower leg. No surgery or anything was needed so it isn’t too bad. He should be back in a month or so.

FLMX: You moved back into your old house in Dade City with the 40 acres and track. Why the

move back and how is it working out?TF: We have had this place since 1998, and now with Evan getting more into riding, it was hard not to keep him away from it, even though I tried. I had the room and house for him to ride, so it was just the right move to get back to Dade City.

FLMX: We see you pop up every now and then doing some racing, what have you been doing to keep the riding juices flowing?TF: I have been racing a little bit when I am there with Evan. During the week I am busy doing my other stuff, I don’t get to ride during the week, so when the weekend comes around it is nice to race. I really enjoy the racing aspect so it has been great to race when Evan is at the races too.

FLMX: You and Chad raced Dade City in Plus 25 about a month ago. How was it having fun with a buddy and old rival?TF: It was a lot of fun! The track is in our back yard, and he texted me and asked if he wanted to race. I thought he was joking until the next day until he sent me a picture of his bike in his truck. It was great to go racing at the local level, we both just enjoy racing, even if its at Dade City, we just happen to be a little bit faster than everyone else.

FLMX: You are also working with Trey Canard and took Ashley Fiolek to a championship this year. What have you been doing with those riders to help them win championships and take it to the

next level?TF: I have been using my experiences from all the years of racing to help them up the learning curve so they can win earlier in their career. It has been challenging for me to make transfer over to help the riders because everything progresses so fast. It has really been working out for every one and I am enjoying it.

FLMX: Are you training amateur riders now?TF: Yeah I am doing a little bit here and there when time is available. Within the last 6 months I have been doing a lot. We just finished a riding school at Gatorback with Tichenor, Izzi and Matt Walker. We had a great turnout and the riders had a great time.

FLMX: Do you miss racing professionally? TF: I really don’t. The first couple years I did. I do miss being up there and battling, but now I know that I couldn’t be competitive so it would be hard to still be racing pro.

FLMX: What do you miss and what do you not miss?TF: I don’t miss the pressure of racing. I felt like I raced for so long and I always had to be ready to perform at the highest level. I miss the competi-tion and good tracks, I also don’t miss being hurt!

FLMX: What’s the next step for Timmy Ferry? Where do you see your life going now that you are retired?TF: I fell into this with Trey accidentally, I didn’t mean to go into racing. But I am really enjoying working with him and have learned so much with Canard and Ashley. I will be pursuing that more now and see where that takes me.

FLMX: Thanks for the interview Timmy, any part-ing words or anyone you would like to thank?TF: Thanks for the interview! Glad to know some-one still wants to interview me since I have been retired for 3 years.

The 9th of 10 Round of the Vortex Lites Champi-onship Series was apart of the 17th Round of the Dade City MX Championship Series. The Vortex Lites Series has been the highlight of the Series this year as the Sponsor Cup has taken a small hiatus for the year. With riders having to qualify into the Main event through lap times in practice and then heat races. In the Heats it was Hamp-shire winning Heat 1 and DJ MacFarlane winning the second on his KTM.

The Main Event was set but over very quickly. Hampshire grabbed a huge holeshot on his Honda and took off laying down a 59 second lap time, as the rest of the field were in the 1:02’s. This would allow him to open up a huge gap over Jeremy Winslow on his Kissimmee Motorsports Kawaski KX 250 who was leading around DJ MacFarlane and KMS Kawasaki’s Nicholas Guessford. Hamp-shire continued to motor away quickly as Winslow started getting heavy pressure from DJ. Winslow would go down and hand over his 2nd place spot to DJ and Guessford.

Wilfredo Guzman was looking good on a bor-rowed YZ 125 coming through the pack but would go down and allow Justin Gant to get away who then went after Guessford. Gant would close up on Guessford for the final podium spot but would not be able to make it happen as Guess-ford had to much of a lead to the checkers to hold onto the final po-dium spot. Hamp-shire would take the win and stretch out a huge lead on Austin Diperna going into the final round, securing him an almost for sure his first title in the Vortex Lites class.

GATORBACK RACE REPORT SIX12 RACETECH RACE REPORT

The 2012 Florida Gold Cup Series kicked off Round 1 at the infamous Gatorback Cycle Park in Gainesville, Florida. With hundreds of riders and families not only from Florida but all over the country, participating in the much anticipated first race. Gatorback was in pristine conditions as the Unlimited Sports MX crew had both the MX and SX track’s ready to ride. Saturday would be a full day of practice with half of the day designated to MX and then the rest to SX, for riders to prepare for the upcoming Mini O’s. Riders would find their lines, dial in the obstacles and get their bike set up for the big race on Sunday.

Michael Clarke aboard his SIX12/RaceTech / Barneys 2013 CRF Honda 450 showed up and was a new rider at the start of Gold Cup this year. Clarke, who has raced previously in the Outdoor Pro races, got back to his roots to try and get his year kickstarted. He was unstoppable this day as he was the fastest rider on the track all weekend and would be rewarded with 3 overall wins on the weekend. In the 450 Pro he would get some early pressure from BPM Racings Heath Harrison, but with a

few laps to go Clarke was able to pull out a small lead and take the win. It was a virtual replay the second moto. In the 450 A class Clarke was uncontested as Jacksonville Powersports Kawasaki rider Jefrey Lewis would take home the #2 spot and his teammate of Cody Chisholm was 3rd. Clarke finished the day by winning the Four Stroke class over Shawn Gann. Cody Chisholm battled with BPM Racings Luke Davie in the 250 Pro class but it was Chisholm coming out on top on his Pro Cir-cuit Yamaha, as Jordan Hoover wound up 2nd overall over Davie. Rock Rivers Yamaha rider Bodie Colangelo would win the 250 A class over KWWD / RaceTech rider Pup Whatley, and the third spot went to Rock River Yamaha rider Jack Sigismondi.

Timmy Ferry threw his leg over his Kawasaki in the Plus 25 and Plus 30 classes. In moto 1 of the Plus 25 it was Stevenson Training Centers / SIX12 RaceTech rider Mike Stevenson with the holeshot and would lead for a few laps over Ferry. Ferry would make his easy by and capture the win on his Stellar MX Kawasaki. Ferry would easily win the second moto

with Gann in 2nd and Clint Shealy 3rd. Plus 30 went easy also as he won both motos, with Michel Sandoval 2nd and Dennis Bourque 3rd. Bourque would come back strong though in the Plus 35 and Plus 40 classes as the Honda rider would win both of those overalls over riders Brad Kadau, Early May and Steve Dumond.

Some other top notables on the day were Gage Linville as he won 2 overalls in the 65 7-9 and the 65 Open class over Colby Gatlin and Cole Bradford. Jordan Bailey was on rails in the 85 9-11 and Jr Mini taking both of those overalls over Jordan Greer, Parker Marshburn and Brock Papi. BPM Racings Jarek Balkovic won the 125 Youth class over Tommy Maxey, RJ Hampshire is on fire lately, he took the Schoolboy win on his Honda over Balkovix and Jordon Smith. Tyler Pantley took his Suzuki to the top spot in the 85 12-13 and the Supermini 1 class. Racing would go late into the afternoon, but the Unlimited Sports MX crew did a fantastic job get-ting it all in!

2012 FLORIDA GOLD CUP SERIESROUND 3 - DADE CITY MX • 10/13/12

MEADOWS MANS UP AT DADEPICS BY: ROB KOY

The 3rd Round of the Florida Gold Cup Series headed to the center of the state to the sandy conditions of Dade City MX. The 2nd round was held at Okeechobee where they suffered serious amount of rain that put a damper on a lot of the racing. Everyone was happy to see the sun-shine and the dry conditions as another great turnout was greeted. The racing was great as riders from all over the southeast did battle.

AJ Meadows really turned it up at one of his home tracks. The Tampa,

Florida rider would take home 3 overall wins on the day on his BPM Racing Honda in the 250 C and 450 C class and on his new Husky 125 in the Youth (12-15) class. In the 250 C Meadows was able to hold off Victor Gonzalez on his Suzuki and Justin Everett on his Kawasaki to capture his 1st overall win on the day. In the 450 C class it was Mead-ows beating out Stephen Culleny this time and Matt Karwat. Meadows ended his day by taking the overall in the Youth class this time over Yamaha rider Drew Swenson and MXers For Jesus’ Austin Cozadd.



Michael Clarke, aboard his SIX12 RaceTech Barneys Honda was the fastest rider on the track. Clarke made easy work of everyone in the 450 Pro and 450 A classes by winning every moto. He would beat out Guzman and Baldiali in the Pro class and in the A class it was Chia in 2nd and Ryan Jessip 3rd. 250 Pro was won by Cody Chisholm, Robby Renner 2nd and Bodie Colangelo 3rd. The fastest 250 rider though was RJ Hampshire. What a impressive ride by Hampshire as the Schoolboy class would start on the second gate of 250 Pro. After the 3rd lap Hampshire had caught Chisholm and would make the pass on him and pull away. Hampshire grew up on the sand and loves the rough conditions. It looks like he might be making a early jump to the A class.

Cody Russell won 2 overalls, taking the 50 7-8 and the 50 Open class. Brandon Coates won the 65 7-9 and 65 Open class. Kyle Cheesman looked solid in the 85 12-13 by taking the overall and then followed it up with a 2nd in the Jr Mini Class. Jordan Bailey would win Jr Mini and the 9-11 class. Zachary Robinson was also very impressive by winning 2 classes, which was the Supermini 1 and the Sr Mini classes! Sean Sattanno was the top B rider by winning both of the 250 and 450 B classes. The Honda rider beat out DJ Macfarlane and Jason Frank in 250 B and in the 450 B he beat out the CR 500 rider Ian Millett and Evan Walker. In the Plus classes Michel Sandoval won the Plus 25 and Plus 30 classes on his Yamaha. Dennis Bourque is still on fire in the Plus 35 and Plus 40 classes, as he won both of those overalls!

HAMPSHIRE RIPS AT REDDICKThe 4th Round of the Florida Gold Cup traveled to Reddick to Moto-cross of Marion County. The Blackburn Family owns and operates the track which has been around for decades now and continues to be one of the most favorite tracks of all the riders. Great weather and track conditions welcomed all the riders for the entire weekend of practice and racing.

RJ Hampshire has been a rider on a mission this year. He has been winning every race he has entered this year in Florida, totally domi-nating the Schoolboy and B classes. Coming into the 4th round of the Gold Cup Hamsphire loves the track and it showed with his domi-nance. RJ raced in 2 classes, the Schoolboy and the 250 B class. In the Schoolboy class Hampshire would win both motos over Zachary Burnett-Bishop and Lorenzo Locurcio. In the 250 B class it was Hamp-shire taking both moto wins once again over Bradford Young and DJ Macfarlane. The Top C rider was AJ Meadows on his BPM Racing Honda. Meadows would take the 250 C win over Victor Gonzalez and

Stephen Culleny. Meadows would then take the overall in the 450 C class this time over Justin Everett and Garrett Black. In the 450 Pro class it was Luke Renzland swapping wins with Michael Clarke for the overall. It was a good 3 way battle for the win as Michael Picone was riding solid aboard his Kawasaki. Clarke would come back in the 450 A class to take the win over Carlos Badiali and Wilfredo Guzman.

Bryce Clark was a 2 time winner in the 65 classes, taking the win in the 65 10-11 and the 65 Open class over Brandon Coats, Jack Kinney and Seth Brown. Coates won the 65 7-9 class over Jack Kinney and Sage Lewis. In the 85 classes it was WMR KTMs Jordn Bailey capturing the 9-11 and Jr Mini 9-13 class over Culling Park, Tommy Rios, Dylan Greer and Kyle Cheesman. Hunter Tyson was strong in the 12-13 and Sr Mini classes by taking home both of those overalls over Zachary Robinson, Cheesman and Zachary Myers. Finally Ramyller Alves closed it all out in the Supermini 1 & 2 classes by winning both overalls over Robinson, Klee and Odell.

RESULTS

In the Plus classes it was Michel Sandoval on his Yamaha dominating the Plus 25 and Plus 30 classes. In the Plus 25 class it was Shawn Gann in 2nd and Cole Studstill in 3rd. The Plus 30 saw Dennis Bourque in 2nd and Robert Onori in 3rd. Bourque was the dominating factor in the Plus 35 and Plus 40 classes by winning both overalls over Brad Kadau, Steve Dumond and Andrew Bibeau. Arthur Coker won the Plus 45 class and Harvey Sorensen took the Plus 50 overall over Randy Capley and Jon Osborn. Kelsey Morris was the big winner in the Womens class over Katryna Solley.
