TRAINING CAMP

The old saying in motocross “It is not a matter of if, but when” you will get hurt and unfortunately how bad and what is required to recovery from the injury is all part of our beloved sport. This month’s topic is brought to you by personal experience as I had my turn Saturday October 12th at Reddick during the Gold Cup practice day. At this time I am well on my way to a full recovery after a missed shift made for a long day/night in the ER with a broken left Clavicle, turn rotator cuff in my right shoulder, several broken ribs and torn cartilage on my left side, bruised kidney, liver and a lot of other aches and pains from head to toe. With all that said let’s take a look at what I am doing and what you should be doing to help speed up the healing and recovery process. If you were not aware, my company Innovation Train-ing Systems has helped hundreds of ath-letes through the injury recovery process by working with their doctors and therapist to coordinate a rehab program and is just one of the many benefits to working with ITS.

The injury process can be a little intimi-dating for those without much experience dealing with doctors and therapist. The Orthopedic doctors can tend to be a little more conservative unless you know the right questions to ask and speak to them on level they understand. It is also essen-tial that they feel confident in your trainer’s professional education level in coordinat-ing the rehab efforts so that you are in the driver’s seat but you make them feel as if they are making the decisions.

Let’s start from the day the injury takes place, track personnel and Emergency Medical Services at the track stabilize your injury and send you home to follow up with your Orthopedic doctor or transport you to the hospital by ambulance or Personal vehicle for x-rays and treatment as required per the injury. If you have the ability and it is safe to go by personal vehicle do so it will save a tremendous amount of money. However, as a Firefighter/ Para-medic and Exercise Physiologist with over 25 years experience I would not allow just anyone to make this decision and would consult someone with the proper credentials. Once the dust settles and you are one on one with your Orthopedic doctor, every motocross rider should have one because you are going to need it sooner or later trust me, it is know time to get down to business of healing and this takes place on day one. In speaking with the Physician it is important that he understands your

sport, scheduled events and your expectations for recovery. Get details on your injury, the doctors expected recovery time, rehab suggestions and things you can and cannot do in the gym on your own. While doc-tors are conservative on their approach to accelerating the rehab pro-cess, an educated experienced professional by your side will be your advocate and help bridge this gap.

In most cases you will take a few days to rest and catch your breath after the injury. Depending on your injury you will want to get back in the gym right away to get your body moving. My injury happened on Saturday and Monday I was back in the gym, could barely breath, very difficult to move but I can assure you it will probably cut at least 2 weeks off my re-covery time in the end. The first sessions back in the gym may only be to walk on the treadmill, stationary bike, light stretching or something along

those lines. This will be the second time in the process when you need professional help to coordinate your plan. The plan in general centers on doing what you can do with aggravating the injury. The increased blood flow and circulation will speed up the healing process by providing the injury site with more oxygenated blood. In addi-tion to getting your body moving, this is the time to really make sure you tighten up on your nutrition. Much like you’re in season training and nutrition plan, what you eat and drink can and will make a difference in the recovery process. To ensure that the healing process is given every advantage available to accelerate out of the gate, eat adequate amounts of protein for your body weight, lots of fruits and vegetables, generous amounts of water and limit the sweets as sugar tends to disturb and in-terfere with the muscle building and repair phase of the healing process.

In conclusion, be willing to take the time needed to heal properly but be aggressive if you have an important scheduled event that is a realistic expectation. Other mo-dalities that you may want to consider in your recovery include massage therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic just to name

a few. Many riders spend tens of thousands, even hundreds of thou-sands of dollars on their race program; don’t be cheap hire someone with the proper credentials to help with your training and rehab program. I have said many times, a weekend certification course does not make someone an expert on fitness, nutrition or rehab, education and experi-ence will give you the results you’re looking for.

That’s it for this month, if I can be of assistance with your training, nutrition or injury recovery program please let me know. Pleased visit www.innovationtrainingsystems.com for all your fitness and nutri-tion needs.

TEXT BY: RONNIE MONK PICS BY: ROB KOY / KOY PHOTO

FLMX: Hannah, let’s start out with some basics. How old are you, where are you from, where are you living now and do you have any siblings? HANNAH HODGES: I turned 15 in August and I am from DeLand, FL. I travel back and forth to GA for training, but FL is still my home. I am an only child.

FLMX: How did you get into riding? How long have you been riding now? HH: My dad used to race when I was younger and my parents bought me a PW when I was 2 or 3. I did not have much interest in riding until I was 6… and at that point something clicked and it was all I wanted to do.

FLMX: You are the fastest woman I have ever seen on Mini Bikes. Patterson was fast on 80’s and Fiolek didn’t start going real fast until big bikes, but I think you have them beat. What’s your secret? HH: Thank you! I do not have a secret. Hard work and sacrifices.

FLMX: You don’t always race the girl’s classes, instead of opting to race with the boys. Do you like whipping up on them and how does it help your riding? HH: Racing against the boys has challenged me to set goals and never settle. I have fun racing with the boys!

FLMX: Who do you look up to in racing? What do you want to do with your racing career? HH: I would say Villopoto since he works hard and it shows in his racing. I want to be the first girl to get points in an outdoor national and keep progressing in women’s motocross.

FLMX: WMX has dropped off in the last few years. The girls did have a full series and factory rides... What do you think about the state and future of WMX? HH: Very disappointing! But that said, I will just work harder and trust that I will achieve my goals and change the future of the sport.

FLMX: Where are you riding and training at now? HH: The best training facility in the world – MTF!!! I could not ask for a better training program.

FLMX: What’s the normal week like for Hannah Hodges? HH: My normal week is pretty hectic. Monday is spent doing schoolwork all day until 7pm, then I go to Bible Study until 9pm and then hop in the moto-van and drive 4 hours to MTF in GA arriving around 1am. Tuesday,Wednesday and Thursday I am in the gym by 7:30, on the track by 9 until 1 and then back in the gym. My evenings are spent doing schoolwork. I head back to FL Thursday evening and spend Friday, Saturday and Sunday doing schoolwork depending on my race schedule. I am new to homeschooling and in a private Christian based program that is much harder than public school!

FLMX: Your bikes sound killer. What’s going on with those things. What products and sponsors do you use? HH: Thanks! The MAVTV/Farren/PR2 Team definitely have me under the best bikes on the gate. I could not do it without all of my sponsors: MAVTV, Farren Racing, PR2 Suspension & Motors, Troy Lee Design, Smith, Lucas Oil, FMF, Impulse Design, Alpinestars, Hinson, Dunlop, MTF and RADMX

FLMX: Good luck with everything. Any parting words? HH: I would like to thank everyone that makes all of the sacrifices with me: My mom and dad, Colleen and everyone at MTF, Eric, Mike, Phil and Joe. Through Christ all things are possible. Thank you for this interview!

MINI OS MX RACE REPORT

SIX12 RACETECH RACE REPORT PICS BY: ROB KOY

Once Supercross finishes up all the Main Events, the track personnel and riders head outdoors! The infamous Gatorback track was a fixture on the Pro National circuit for years until they changed the schedule in 1998 and forgot to put Gatorback back in! In the past few years the track has changed, with the addition of some sand and re routing of the back sections. The track was in great conditions after the amount of rain they got on Tuesday. Hundreds of riders in addition to all the entrants during SX took to the track for practice on Wedneday and Thursday. First motos would kick off Thursday and Friday, and then finally all second motos on Saturday to crown the National Title winners!

After winning in Olympiad SX titles RJ Hampshire went straight back to his winning ways in the A and Pro Sport classes. RJ won the 450 B class in MX last year at Mini Os, so almost everyone knew he had great speed on the 450. But what about the 250? He would prove it to everyone that he has plenty of speed on the 250 with the help of Amsoil Honda. Hampshire won both the 250 Pro Sport and A divisions. In the Pro Sport class Kawasaki finished out the podium, with Nick Gaines finished 2nd and Darain Sanayei 3rd. In the A class Luke Renzland was 2nd overall and Gaines 3rd. Hampshire kept it rolling in the 450 Pro Sport by winning the overall over Suzuki backed Matthew Burkeen and Cody Chisholm put in a great ride on his Fox/Kawasaki. Hamp-shires only defeat in the overall would come in the 450 A class. RJ stalled his bike out of the gate and would have to come from dead last, putting in a great ride to third. This would not be enough as Monster Energy Kawasakis Thomas Covington took the win and Nick Gaines in 2nd.

Keith Tucker cleaned up in the 250 B class on his Triangle Yamaha. Tucker won both the Limited and B in front of Geico Hondas Jerry Robin, Alex Frye and Ryan Surratt. Tristan Charboneau took the 450 B win over Surratt and Kody Kuykendall. The 450 B Limited was won by Ryan Surratt on his Yamaha over Burnett and Robin. Bryce Mauldin was simply unstoppable in the C classes outdoors. The KTM rider from Webster Florida would win every class! 250 C, 250 C Limited, 450 C and 450 C Limited would see Mauldin take home the hardware! This was Mauldins biggest win of his career. He would top riders that included Rigo Angulo, Robbey Ruffner, Drew Abney, Preston Pennington and Brian Guerro. The KTM rider of Alex Frye was flawless in the Schoolboy divisions, taking home all 3 overalls. In Schoolboy 1 it was Ramyller Alves, who just made the jump to big bikes, in the #2 spot. Alves might have been one of the most impressive riders as he has adapted extremely well to the 125. Lorenzo Locurcio, who won in SX came home in 3rd in both Schoolboy 1 and Limited. Dylan Greer put in an excellent ride in Schoolboy 1 Limited finishing up second behind Frye on his KTM. Schoolboy 2 was all Alex Frye once again taking the overall, this time over Mitchell Harrison and Ashton Hayes.

MINI OS MX RACE REPORT

Team Green Kawasaki has a star in Garrett Marchbanks. Marchbanks would take the win in (9-11) Limited class over Jalek Swoll and Jarrett Frye. Frye would give Marchbanks his only lost of the week in the (9-11) class. Marchbanks would end up winning the overall Olympiads for MX and the week in the class though. The 85 (12-13) class was a battle be-tween Chase Sexton, Jordan Baily and Brock Papi. Bailey would come up just short in each class, finishing 2nd overall in both classes. Sexton would win the (12-13) and Papi took the Limited class. Bailey would win the MX Olympiad though with his 2-2 tally. Bailey would take a overall win though in the 85 (12-15) Limited class over Cameron Cannon and Papi. (12-15) was won by Chase Sexton with Cannon 2nd and Enzo Lopes 3rd. Supermini 1 & 2 are always some of the best racing of the week. Watching the young talent and impressive bikes. This week it be-longed to Austin Forkner. Forkner was spot on again taking both overalls. Supermini 1 saw Joey Crown 2nd and Tanner Stack 3rd. Supermini 2 had Tanner Stack 2nd and Jayce Pennington rounded out the podium.

Former Toronto SX winner Shaun Skinner came out of retirement to come do some racing at this years Mini Os. Skinner took his Sharp Moto backed Suzuki to a 2-1 score in Plus 25 to capture a 2013 title. Matt Johnson would finish up 2nd and Ben Robinson 3rd. Matt Johnson also captured a title in the Vet 30+ class on his Sharp/Ruthless Kawasaki. Johnson beat out Gregory Pamart and Phllp Haas. Some other notables in the Plus classes included John Grewe who took the Plus 35 and 40 divisions. Trampas Parker won the Plus 45 and Kirk Lewis won the Plus 50. Hannah Hodges would win the Girls (12-16), Jordan Jarvis won the Girls (9-11) and Kaitlyn Morrow came out on top of the Womans class.

2013 WINTER OLYMPICSSUPERCROSS 11/25 - 11/27, 2013

SIX12 RACETECH RACE REPORT PICS BY: ROB KOY

The 2013 THOR Winter Olympics is a 6 day event held the week of Thanksgiving every year, this year Gator-back Cycle Park would hold this event for the 42nd year! The race is composed of Supercross and Motocross, with the riders seeking AMA National titles and overall combined awards. The race has a rich history, with countless of amateurs cutting their teeth at Gatorback on their way to the big show. Unlimited Sports are the people behind the show, who bring us great tracks, facility and racing that runs smoothly all week. This year their were many changes around the facility as the town of Newberry welcomed the track with open arms. After some permitting changes, the Kern family worked long and hard to get the track back to its glory for this race.

37 total titles were up for grabs in the SX portion of the week. SX would kick off on Monday with practice and heat races. Tuesday would see more heat races and consi races. Finally on Tuesday afternoon and Wednes-day they would run all the Main Events. This year some serious rain came in on Tuesday and washed out the motos for the day, but the crew with Unlimited Sports had the track primed and ready for Wednesday to finish up all the races!

Coming into SX the big news in the Pro Sport and A classes were 5-6 guys. Jordan Smith on the Amsoil Honda team, who was unstoppable here last year in the B class, was making his debut in the class. RJ Hampshire had just landed a ride with the Amsoil Honda team after his win at the Monster Energy SX race and was looking very good. Dakota Alix was going great on his Red Bull KTM, Luke Renzland was holding it down for Yamaha and on the Kawasakis it was Thomas Covington and Darian Sanayei. As the gate dropped on the first heat race of the week in the 250 A class it was RJ Hampshire pulling the holeshot in front of Sanayei, Alic and Renzland. Jordan Smith had a bad start and would actually fall and finish up a lap down. Their was no stopping Hamp-shire as he easily won the first heat race, and would give him a lot of confidence for the rest of the week. In the next heat race, 450 A, tragedy would strike Jordan Smith. Smith was a big favorite coming into this week, and after a rider lost a chain in front of him, leading up to the triple, he would clip the rider going off the face. This caused Smith to fly off his bike and land directly on his leg. The crash would break his femur, taking Smith out of contention in only the second race of the week.

Wednesday would see all the Main Events take to the track. RJ Hampshire would capture his first SX National Title in the 250 A class. After running in the top 3, he would make his way past Dakota Alix for the lead around halfway and easily take the win. Alix was second and Covington 3rd. Alix would get some redemption though in the 450 A class by taking the title over Hampshire and Luke Renzland. It was Renzlands turn next in the

250 Pro Sport class on his Triangle Yamaha. Renzland took the win over Hampshire and Darian Sanayei. In the 450 Pro Sport class it was all Hampshire once again. RJ pulled the holehsot and never looked back, taking a big win over Gaines and Renzland. RJ would win the overall Olympiads for SX with his 1-2 and 2-1 scores in all 4 classes.

The B classes have a slew of young, up and comers all hungry and look-ing to take that next step before they go pro. Keith Tucker has made a smooth transition to the big bike and is now aboard the Triangle Yama-has. Tucker would start off his week with the title in the 250 B class over Alex Frye and Ryan Surratt. Chase Bell looked like the guy to beat this week, as he started off the week in the 250 B Lim class flawless. Easily winning his heat and the Main Event over Hondas Nathan Haas and Mar-tin Castelo. Unfortunately the JGR Kawasaki rider of Bell would go down in another class, breaking his wrist and would be out for the week. Al-lowing the B class and Schoolboy division to be wide open. Keith Tucker would come back in the 450 B class by winning another title over KTM rider Bryson Taylor and Zachary Bishop-Burnett. The 450 B Limited class

MINI OS SX RACE REPORT

saw a new podium as Hondas Will Markolf took the win over Bradley Es-per and Cody Williams.

The C class had a lot of very fast Novice riders who are ready to make the jump to B class. Kyle McElrath took the win in 250 C class, as he is following in his brothers footsteps. Webster, Floridas Bryce Mauldin was second on his KTM and Zach Lee was 3rd. 250 C Limited saw the Kawasaki rider of Preston Pennington take the win over Reg Magyar and Jake Fuerst. McElrath took his second title in the 450 C class over Mauldin once again and Keenan Mokma was 3rd. 450 C Limited was all Drew Abney on his Yamaha taking the win over McElrath and Barneys/SIX12 Robbey Ruffner.

The Mini riders are always out in full force at Mini O’s and this year was no exception. With Cobra and KTM riders doing battle in the 51cc classes, Daxton Bennick took the win in the (4-6) Limited over Owen Covell and Jon Jon Carver. Jett Reynolds dominated the (4-8) Lim class over Difran-cesco and Reed Cooper. Matthew Leblanc put a stop to Jett Reynolds in the (7-8) Limited class by taking the win. Difrancesco was 3rd on his Co-bra. In the 65cc classes James McElvain took the title in the 65 (10-11) class over Nathanael Thrasher and Jeremy Ryan. (10-11) Limited would see Branden Walthier with a big win over Jeremy Ryan and Jack Rogers. Jett Reynolds made a bid debut on his Team Green Kawasaki in the (7-9) class by winning the title after having to go to the consi. Crockett Myers was 2nd and Daniel Scott 3rd. Myers would beat out Reynolds in the (7-9) Limited class and Colby Gatlin was 3rd.

Chase Sexton took 2 titles aboard his Yamaha, which included the 85 (12-13) class and the Mini Sr. (12-15) class. Garrett Marchbanks was un-stoppable in his Kawasaki in the (9-11) classes, taking both titles. Brock Papi had a great showing on his KTM, winning the (12-13) Limited class and was on the podium in a couple other classes. Austin Forkner kept

his winning streak alive from Monster Cup, taking his Monster Energy Kawasaki to the top spot in both of the Supermini classes.

Other notables, Lorenzo Locurcio took both Schoolboy 1 class wins. Hannah Hodges was flying in the Girls class and also placing in the top 10 in some Mini classes. Barry Carsten showed his SX skills from being a old pro by taking 2 titles in the Plus 35 and 45 classes. Larry Partin took the win in the Plus 25 class after a big battle with Matthew Johnson.

BETWEEN MOTOS

We all know that injuries are a part of our sport and that if you ride chances are very good that you will have one. It may be minor or possibly major. We read almost daily about a rider that has been injured and needs help to cover medical costs. This got us wondering about what kind of coverages there are out there and what can happen if you don’t have any coverage or the wrong coverage. We called a racer who happens to also be an insurance agent for Florida Blue, Robbie Carstens.

FLMX: Hi Robbie, thanks for taking the time to talk to us about this issue. You race in the FTR series correct?ROBBIE: Yes, I do.

FLMX: How long have you been around the sport?ROBBIE: I raced MX in the 70’s. I quit after I crashed at Gatorback in 1977 and broke my femur. I’ve been very active in FTR for the past 8 or 9 years. I run the Hare Scramble and Enduro series.

FLMX: How long have you been in the insurance field?ROBBIE: I have been in the health care industry over 38 years. Yep, I’m old haha!! A little over two years as an agent.

FLMX: What is the minimum coverage someone who races or rides dirt bikes have?ROBBIE: That’s a hard question to answer. There are many options available so it’s tough to give an exact answer. Really you can’t have too much. If don’t think you can afford health insurance you should rethink this sport. The fact is you really can’t afford NOT to have insur-ance.

FLMX: I know people have lied to doctors about how they got they got their injuries so their insurance wouldn’t go up. Is that true?ROBBIE: The purpose of having quality insurance is you can’t be canceled. Especially now, with the new laws, everybody will be rated the same regardless of pre existing conditions or profession. A profes-sional MX racer will pay the same as someone that works in an office. No longer will anyone that participates in this sport we love have to keep it as secret from their agent or insurance company.

FLMX: What can happen to someone without insurance if they can’t pay the medical bills?ROBBIE: That will be a devastating blow to their financial well be-ing even possibly bankruptcy. A seemingly small injury can turn into a $50,000-$100,000 bill in the blink of an eye. Even with one of the less expensive policies with high deductible from Florida Blue you still have our contracted rates which are MUCH lower than out of pocket. For example I had a little spill in April this year. Shattered a bone in my thumb. It required outpatient surgery to put it back together with a plate and screws. The non contracted price for just the surgery center would have been approximately $12,000!! The FloridaBlue rate for the same surgery center was somewhere around $1,200. And I only paid a portion of that. That’s a HUGE difference on just a broken thumb!! Just think what would have happened if I had a major injury.

FLMX: Where can people call to find out more about how to get medical insurance?ROBBIE: Call me on my personal cell 352-494-1938 or email me [email protected]

FLMX: Thanks for your time Robbie.ROBBIE: Thank you Billy!! I appreciate the opportunity to share this valuable information so we can keep doing this sport we love so much!!!
