Introduction

Flextern: the custom-made lectern

The FlexternTM was developed because something was missing in the collection

of lecterns. In 2007 we began selling lecterns and quickly concluded that we

wanted something other than what was available. For this reason we decided to

design, produce and sell our own lecterns under the name FlexternTM.

FlexternTM is a combination of ‘fl exible lectern.’

The descriptive name outlines exactly what you get: a customized lectern!

People are becoming progressively taller. A height of two meters (over 6 foot) is

not unusual anymore. However, there are still people who are 1,60 meters (over

somewhat over 5 foot) tall. FlexternTM offers lecterns that are suitable for both

groups and as well as wheelchair users.

Concept Flextern

The power of a lectern

A lectern gives the speaker a feeling of power. Therefore, the lectern must

stand solid and be at the perfect height so that the speaker can stand up with

his back straight. You have undoubtedly seen the award ceremonies on TV

where the actors all have to completely bend over just to be able to speak

into the microphone. This is obviously not an ideal situation. The actor should

be able to stand up straight, while knowing that the microphone is adjusted

strongly enough to pick everything up perfectly.

Dutch Design

Unique lecterns, hand built

The lecterns offered by FlexternTM are made in small quantities. We design the

3d designs ourselves, the construction takes place in our own workshop, and

we deliver the lecterns personally to the customer. This allows us to guarantee

the perfect dimensions and the excellence in workmanship that is so characte-

ristic of a FlexternTM lectern.

Base

Workmanship

The base is made of aluminum and is die-cast by a temperature of 800 degrees

via vacuum shaping. The aluminum used is Ansi 10MG and has excellent

qualities for casting the base of t he FlexternTM. The advantage of this production

method is that a smooth surface is created once the base is taken from the mold.

After the die-cast and cool down of the base, the fi nishing process takes place,

the remnants are cut off and the holes are milled. This is a very labour-intensive

process because the fi nal result has to be a perfectly shaped base. For this

reason, we produce only twelve bases per day.

Desk

Excellent quality

The desk consists of two parts. First of all the wooden desk of Egger 24mm

thick. The choice for these desks has been based upon its excellent qualities.

It is covered by two components polyurethane, done by a unique patented

system which has been developed to mould polyurethane under extreme high

pressurized air to our desks. This enables us to have a weldless transfer from

the wood of the desk and the PUR. Furthermore we can create the round shape

and any colour to the desk.

Furnishing

Danish quality

The idea to furnish the rear of the FlexternTM was to give a welcoming feeling

to the speaker. Yet, to fi nd a fabric that is durable with the elevating fl exible

lectern brought us to the Danish company KVADRAT, producer of the best

fabric that is used by major architects and furniture works.

Elevating

Optimum use

An electronic lifting mechanism is used to get the FlexternTM fast and safely at

its desired height. The lifting mechanism is driven by a control box to set the

speed of the height adjustable system, but also the maximum height and the

safety.

Flexible folding

The Burgerzaal of the Rotterdam city hall has a Flextern which is used for

conferences and presentations. John Scholte of the City of Rotterdam states:

“Roughly 120 to 200 people attend in this room with a beamer. The excellence

of the Flextern is that a notebook can be placed on the fl exible desk, enabling

to see the speaker what is projected on the screen without having to turn your

back towards the audience.

Daring to be different

The Flextern is quite different from the other lecterns used by the City of

Rotterdam, says John Scholte. “Many users need to get used to the Flextern.

It is sometimes seen as a somewhat bulky, but once its practical advantages

are discovered, they soon change their minds. Luckily we were able to try the

Flextern for some time to form a substantiated opinion on its performance.”

Suitable for any speaker

At energy supplier Electrabel in Belgium, the Flextern is used two or three

times a day by different people in an auditorium. All speakers have expressed

their satisfaction with the lectern as it can be adjusted to any height of a

speaker.

Full option

Its timeless design and multiple functions of the Flextern were the most impor-

tant reasons for opting for the Flextern by Electrabel, says Nico de Saedeleer.

“Furthermore, Flextern is the only lectern that is ‘full option’. Everything is built-

in with state of the art connections. All cables are hidden away in the body of

the lectern”.
